The Expropriation Act, recently enacted by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has spark retaliatory measures by the United States. Domestically, the Institute for Race Relations (IRR) warns of disruptions in the banking sector's practice of using property as collateral for home loans. Anlu Keeve told Biznews in an interview that the loss of stable property value as collateral could have a ripple effect throughout the economy. Higher credit risks for financial institutions may lead banks to tighten lending criteria, raise interest rates, and limit credit availability. Keeve also highlights the risks of increased investor nervousness and potential capital flight. Addressing criticisms that the IRR's warnings are alarmist or fear mongering, Keeve points to historical precedents, citing Zimbabwe and Venezuela as examples of the economic chaos that can follow expropriation measures. "In Zimbabwe," she adds, "houses in Harare weren't confiscated, but their value still collapsed."
“I remember during my training having professors tell me, ‘one day you might do something important and you'll tick off a vested interest, and they're going to come into a meeting with you, and they're going to bring a copy of your dissertation and slam it on the table and start challenging you.' And that is exactly what happened.” – Keeve Nachman This is the 2nd episode in a special four-part series about where we go deep into the food system with some of the brightest minds at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. This conversation is Dr. Keeve Nachman, a powerhouse in the fields of environmental health, risk assessment, and food systems research. Keeve is the Robert S. Lawrence Professor and Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. He's also a leading voice on issues like antibiotic resistance and industrial agriculture's impact on public health. I asked Keeve to come on the show to talk about how his work helped ban the use of arsenic in our food system—a fight that spanned 15 years and had a ripple effect around the globe. Keeve's story is a masterclass in persistence and the power of science-driven policy change. We also explore his ongoing efforts to address antibiotic misuse in industrial agriculture, a growing threat to global public health, and discuss what it will take to create lasting change in our food system. Sonja Keeve and I both hold executive MBA degrees from Jack Welch's Management Institute. We met during one of the JWMI's networking events and realized that our journeys from employee to entrepreneurship, despite being different, also have many similarities. We decided to talk about that and share those experiences in the form of a podcast episode. Three questions guide our conversation:1) How did you start your business? 2) As you transitioned from the corporate to the entrepreneurial world what was the hardest part to deal with, and what was the most fun? 3) Along with that, what type of mindset shifts do you have to make going from employee to business owner, and maybe what type of habits/ skills you developed in corporate helped you in your business? And we talk about so much more. This is an episode you don't want to miss. In this episode, we hear from former Truelove Seeds apprentice and current Truelove Seeds seed producer and collaborator Chris Keeve in an interview from last fall 2021 when they visited during our annual growers gathering at our farm outside of Philadelphia, PA. There is also a short clip from the summer of 2019 while a group of us harvested peas and Chris narrates, and a short update from this month so we can hear the awesome things Chris is up to this summer. Chris Keeve is a seedkeeper, chaotic gardener, and PhD student in Geography at the University of Kentucky. Their work focuses on the political ecologies and cooperative geographies of participatory seed work, especially through lenses of Black, queer, and liberatory ecologies. They've been known to write things here and there about seeds, politics, ecology, histories, futures, and materiality. Their apprenticeship with Truelove has led into their work with projects like the TradeRoots Culinary Collective in Wisconsin, as well as their current work in central Kentucky as a seed grower for Truelove, as well as for Ujamaa Seeds and Experimental Farm Network. This season they are most excited about the Paul Robeson tomato, with an upcoming growout of blue collards a close second. It's time for another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era! This book is the last of the adult novels for the first phase; it's The Fallen Star by Claudia Gray! This book is set after The Rising Storm in the third wave of the High Republic's first phase, set at the same time as Mission to Disaster & Midnight Horizon (which Mike will be tackling in the near future)! In more detail, Mike begins by confirming where TFS sits in the High Republic timeline, as well as providing some background information to the book and Claudia Gray before providing his spoiler-free thoughts on the book. Mike then reads the blurb & crawl of the book and gives his thoughts on the themes & characters which features some minor spoilers, including some tidbits of information. After providing these thoughts, Mike finishes his review by providing more-detailed thoughts on the book, it's ending and confirming the general plot. This is a perfect review for anyone interested in the final adult novel of the High Republic's first phase; whether you are soon to read it, or have already finished it! The Fallen Star was released January 4th 2022 and is by Claudia Gray. For The High Republic, she also wrote the young adult novel Into The Dark (Phase 1, Wave 1). She also wrote the non-High-Republic SW books Master & Apprentice, Lost Stars, Leia: Princess Of Alderaan and Bloodline. Mike interviewed Claudia Gray in December of 2020, you can listen on the feed of Comics In Motion, Genuine Chit-Chat or on GCC's YouTube channel – Mike also spoke with fellow High Republic architect Cavan Scott in April 2022 which can be found in the same places (YouTube has their conversation with video)! The Fallen Star is the adult novel of the third wave of the High Republic's first phase along with the young adult novel Midnight Horizon and the junior novel Mission To Disaster, all set in 230BBY. Phase 2 will start in October 2022 and is set 150 years before the first phase. Mike has reviewed all books from the first & second waves of phase 1, which are Light Of The Jedi (reviewed March 2021), A Test Of Courage (August ‘21) & Into The Dark (October ‘21) and The Rising Storm (November ‘21), Race To Crashpoint Tower (February ‘22) & Out Of The Shadows (March '22). In the previous release of SWCIC (ep 92), Mike embarks on the finale of the High Republic comics, which is the third volume, called The Jedi's End - it takes place just before The Fallen Star. In these comics Keeve faces the true face of fear in The Leveler while Sskeer loses his connection to the force, plus Avar Kriss is relentlessly pursuing Lourna Dee at any cost. Amidst this story, Mike also gives additional information on the Frozian, Ugor and Latero species! Oh my god, I have so many elderly meandering things to ask you and tell you… so many things I don't understand. A couple of items I found interesting in the past couple of weeks regarding some minor events we've experienced, mainly what I'm hearing is the first war in Europe since WWII. A couple of things: On the day Russia invaded Ukraine I heard a story on NPR, one of my main news sources along with the Associated Press, Reuters and The Wall Street Journal. In this NPR story, which I could not find later, the reporter in Ukraine was asked how citizens were handling it on the first day. She said “humor”. She said the usual tensions of day to day life seemed to dissipated and that there were more Ukranians helping each other. Particularly helping the elderly with their supplies… helping them carry groceries and assisting with finding bomb shelters and that there was a sense of quiet unity. I found that sort of hopeful and very cool. Another NPR story which I did find the link to and so will you at the bottom of this description, is regarding US Military intelligence for Ukraine that was being delayed and therefore was not nearly as valuable, because of attorneys. The interview is with Republican Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse who is on the Senate Intelligence Committee. Yes, it sounds like an oxymoron, but let's leave that alone for now. Also, while we're on Ukraine can we talk about how to pronounce it's capital, Kiev. I always thought it was Kiyev. In fact I thought it was a different city, but then I found out it wasn't so I thought it was like Niche. Remember when the word niche was pronounced niTCH? But then I wasn't fancy enough to have a nitch and I had to have a niche. So I left my niTCH in Key-yev. Actually there's more to it. Key-yev But this episode is about my guest… my college senior and the value of learning to write, to convey a thought and support an argument or position. Isn't there a thing called a position paper? My senior mentions writing in MLA.. MLA style refers the style recommended by the Modern Language Association (MLA) for preparing scholarly manuscripts and student research papers. It concerns itself with the mechanics of writing, such as punctuation, quotation, and, especially, documentation of sources. The “Modern” Language Association was Founded in 1883. How that makes it modern? I have no idea. Maybe the same thing that makes this moron modern. Do you remember doing research papers and having to have a bibliography… and citing sources? Remember ibid? I remember using that a lot so I had to re-look it up and ibid is when you're using the same source but a different section, so you just put ibid… I-B-I-D which is latin for in the same place —used to indicate that a reference is from the same source as a previous reference. Which you probably already knew… and proceeded to forget, like me. We talk about studying art and applying techniques vs. studying art history and studying techniques. Also how most artists that create art piece together their career and their income. Most artists at one time or another teach art. I've heard the expression, “those that can't do, teach”, which is utter horse manure. Most artists, in addition to creating art, teach or find commercial applications for their art. You've heard of actors who do one film “for the studios” and for the money, so they can take smaller roles or roles in smaller independent films for art's sake. In the art world not everyone can become a Takashi Murakami, Jenny Saville, David Hockney or Yayoi Kusama. And to those iconic names you're probably saying, who said what now? No, I've never heard of any of those artists either but apparently they are among 10 artists you should know about. There is a link to the article at the bottom of the description. We get back to our discussion about mental health and the growth that occurs between freshman and senior year of both high school and college. More wisdom from youth and my college senior on the Modern Moron… thanks for listening. CLOSE - What better way to conclude an episode about art than to talk about the Simpsons and Bob's Burgers. Like most shows I was way late to the party when it comes to Bob's Burgers. My daughter and I watch it and it does crack me up. And if you appreciate the aesthetics of different animation styles you really should watch episode 1 of the 8th season of Bob's Burgers. Some refer to it as a “fan-imation” episode where non professional animators were allowed to animate a scene of the show. I really enjoyed it and again it is the first episode of season 8 called “Brunchsquatch”. Thank you to my guest and an early congratulations on her graduation in just a couple months! Now… it is a rare occasion where I actually know who my next guest is and can promote it and I have a pretty great guest coming up next time. Are you familiar with the Netflix show “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window”? It was on Netflix's top 10 when it first came out, and has received some great reviews. It is a satire of the psychological thriller, keep that in mind when you watch. My GUEST is one of the creators of the show along with being one of the writers and producers. He has been on the show before when he was writing for the animated show Mike Tyson's Mysteries, an episode that included an interesting story about Mike Tyson and it's our most downloaded episode! Of course I'm talking about Larry Dorf. He's my guest next time, I'm very excited, so stay tuned… to the Modern Moron. Kyiv or Kiev? So, I thought, great, this could be something great. [18:18-18:26]Take some time to understand those pieces because honestly, once you know the “Why” the “How” becomes easy. [27:39-28:01]So being home by myself was not an ideal space for me. But what it did was it gave me some clarity around how I can serve other women even more, because I no longer had the limitations and what I thought was going to be the biggest setback in my life has truly been the biggest blessing.

I don't think it's necessary to tell all of you that the world is INSANE right now with Putin going to war with Ukraine. What a child! The Original Deadtime Stories stands with Ukraine. I've seen a lot of posts on social media about what you can do to help and one of the things that keeps recurring in these posts is using the correct pronunciation of the capital, Kyiv. When we first recorded this episode, Taylor Shurte (who plays Iana Kasian in this chapter) taught me that some members of her family were from Ukraine and pronounced the capital city as Keeve instead of Key-yev. Ever since then if I talked about the Ukrainian capital, I tried to pronounce it the Ukrainian way instead of what the world taught us, the Russian way. So I hope this episode, in some little way, helps us stand with the Ukraine through our pronunciation of the capital city, Kyiv.Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau and executive produced by Daniel Jones. Additional voices by Rainee Blake, Marissa Pistone, Daniel Jones, Jordan Katcher, Janette Zosche, Taylor Shurte, Tamara Perry, Ariel Dale, Matt MacNelly, Sophia Sassone, Allyn Anthony Moriyon, and Jeremy Staple. This week I reflect on the first arc of Cavan Scott's High Republic comic run. Building off its (ironic?) title, I explore the ways that Keeve, Sskeer and the Jedi Order as a whole are confronted with the fears emerging from new Dark Side threats: the threat of the Drengir to be sure, but especially the threats within themselves. For the Pull List segment in this comics-focused episode, I discuss the fact that Solo 2 probably isn't happening, at least for now. Ok I mainly go into War of the Bounty Hunters #1 and its incredible character reveal.
