The Monte Carlo feels like an obvious extension of the Old Fashioned: whiskey, bitters, and Benedictine for sweetness. Under-ordered but beloved by bartenders, it's a drink with depth, nuance, and history worth unpacking. Joining us to do just that is Alex Howard, Nashville-based co-founder and beverage director of Martha My Dear and The Ariston. Listen on (or read below) to discover Alex's Monte Carlo recipe — and don't forget to leave us a review wherever you get your podcasts! Alex Howard's Monte Carlo Recipe - 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters - ½ ounce Benedictine - 2 ounces Old Forester rye - Garnish: lemon twist Directions 1. Start with a big rock of ice in an Old Fashioned glass. 2. Add bitters, Benedictine, and rye. 3. Stir a few times to chill. 4. Garnish with lemon twist (optional discard).

The Rev. Canon George Maxwell leads this class. When we ask the question, “What is Anglican spirituality, and where does it begin?”, many instinctively look to the English Reformation. We think of Thomas Cranmer, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Elizabethan Settlement. These are indeed crucial moments, shaping the way Anglicans pray and order their life with God. But Rowan Williams often invites us to look further back, beneath the surface of the 16th century, into the deeper soil from which Anglican spirituality grows. He points out that Anglicanism is best described as a reformed Catholicism — a tradition that holds onto the catholic inheritance of the early church while reshaping it in the light of reform. If that is true, then Anglican spirituality cannot be confined to Cranmer and Hooker. It must be traced to the fathers and mothers of the early church, and in particular, to the great spiritual experiment of the desert tradition in Egypt, Syria, and Palestine in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Rowan Williams describes the desert tradition as a school of prayer and discipleship that continues to shape Christian life today. In his vision, the desert is the common wellspring of Christian spirituality — Benedictine, Catholic, Orthodox, and yes, Anglican. This Sunday we follow that line of thought: to see how the desert mothers and fathers, through monastic tradition, gave Anglicans their particular way of praying, believing, and living. We trace the journey from the desert of Antony and Syncletica, through Cassian and Benedict, to the cadences of Morning and Evening Prayer, to the lives of George Herbert and Evelyn Underhill, and finally, to Rowan Williams' own reframing for our age.

An unforgettable week filled with rare tastings, exclusive access, and unexpected adventures. Our journey began days before the official Kentucky Bourbon Festival, with an ambitious itinerary that included podcasting with Rebecca Neely in their speakeasy, hosting fans at Revival Vintage Spirits, and acquiring a truly historic bourbon – a 1946 Dowling Deluxe distilled in 1938. Each day brought new discoveries as we visited Town Branch, Jim Beam, Whiskey Thief, and numerous other distilleries, capturing professional-quality content while immersing ourselves in Kentucky's bourbon culture. The centerpiece of our pre-festival activities was our curated bus tour, taking whiskey enthusiasts to legendary Louisville destinations including the Evan Williams Experience, the historic Pendennis Club (birthplace of the Old Fashioned), Old Carter, and Old Louisville Whiskey Company. Walter Zausch's extraordinary hospitality at the Pendennis Club – featuring custom Old Fashioneds and a 25-year Derby bottle – exemplified the personal connections that make bourbon culture so special.Among the most memorable experiences was participating in a Maker's Mark Private Selection despite the distillery suffering a power outage from a lightning strike. Selecting staves by natural light in the lakehouse created an atmosphere connecting us to bourbon's pre-industrial roots, resulting in a selection that perfectly accentuates the whiskey's creme brulee and caramel notes. The festival itself revealed the growing intensity of bottle hunting, with some enthusiasts waiting hours without success. However, Jim Beam's generous allocation of special releases – including Knob Creek 21, Booker's Reserve 2025, and three Hardin's Creek expressions – ensured even general admission attendees could secure remarkable bottles.Beyond the planned events, we experienced an unexpected moment of heroism when CT rescued a young woman from an overturned vehicle – a powerful remi Add for SOFL If You Have GohstsSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

By Patreon request, thanks Chris. Today we get into a little review of the world of whiskey. From what it is, to How to get it on the shelf. Hope you enjoy.Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=MWZ4dGp2MzlucjVvdw==Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshamanA crash course on whiskeyWhat is whiskey?Whiskey is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grains like barley, corn, rye, and wheat, aged in wooden casks. The specific type of grain, how it's prepared, and the distillation and aging processes all influence the final taste and character of the whiskey. Main types of whiskeyScotch: Made in Scotland, primarily from malted barley, aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks, and often has a smoky flavor from peat.Bourbon: Made in the United States, predominantly from corn (at least 51%), and aged in new charred oak barrels, resulting in sweet caramel and vanilla notes.Irish Whiskey: Typically triple distilled for a smoother taste, using malted and unmalted barley, and matured for a minimum of three years.Rye Whiskey: Characterized by its spicy and fruity notes, made with at least 51% rye grain.Canadian Whisky: Aged for a minimum of three years, often lighter and smoother due to the use of column stills.Japanese Whisky: Generally smooth and refined, often double distilled, with less smoky or peaty flavor and subtle fruit, floral, and honey notes.Tennessee Whiskey: Similar to bourbon, but undergoes a charcoal mellowing process before aging, resulting in a sweet and mellow flavor. Key stages in whiskey productionMashing: Grains are mixed with hot water, converting starches into sugars.Fermentation: Yeast is added to the mash, converting sugars into alcohol.Distillation: The fermented liquid is heated in a still, and alcohol vaporizes, separating it from water and impurities.Aging: The spirit is matured in wooden barrels, absorbing flavors and colors from the wood.Bottling: The whiskey is filtered, diluted (if needed), and bottled for consumption. How to taste whiskeyObserve: Examine the color and viscosity ("legs") in the glass.Nose: Gently smell the whiskey, allowing aromas to unfold without overwhelming your senses.Sip: Take small sips, letting the whiskey coat your tongue and noting the flavors and mouthfeel.Finish: Pay attention to the lingering flavors after swallowing.Experiment: Try adding a few drops of water to open up flavors and aromas. Enjoying whiskeyWhiskey can be enjoyed in various ways:Neat: Served without any additions, allowing you to appreciate its pure flavor. On the Rocks: Served over ice, which chills and dilutes the whiskey. With a few drops of water: Can help open up the flavor profile and reduce the intensity. In cocktails: A versatile spirit used in classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, and Mint Julep. No matter how you choose to enjoy it, taking your time and savoring the experience is the most important part of exploring the world of whiskey.

Convenience and quality don't always go hand in hand, but Tip Top Cocktails is changing that perception, one perfectly crafted drink at a time. Founded in 2019, Tip Top is an Atlanta-based brand known for its spirit-forward, bar-quality offerings. Childhood friends Yoni Reisman and Neal Cohen launched the company with a simple mission: make great cocktails more accessible, no bartender required. Tip Top's lineup includes time-honored classics like the Old Fashioned, Negroni, and Margarita, as well as modern favorites such as the Paper Plane, Penicillin, and Naked & Famous. Each cocktail is precisely mixed and served in a sleek 100 mL lowball-style can. The products are available in over 25 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., and carried by national retailers such as Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Gelson's Markets, and Total Wine & More. Amid a rapidly expanding market for RTD cocktails, Tip Top has earned high praise from The New York Times, Food & Wine, and other publications. Perhaps surprisingly, the company hasn't taken any institutional funding to date. In this episode, Yoni and Neal share how an idea sparked on the music festival circuit evolved into a fast-growing brand with national reach. Their journey is a case study in bootstrapping, brand discipline, and building loyalty through an unwavering commitment to quality and customer experience. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: Neal Cohen & Yoni Reisman, Co-Founders, Tip Top Cocktails – The co-founders discuss how Tip Top's origins stem from Yoni's time in the music festival scene, recruiting award-winning bartender Miles Macquarrie to help develop the cocktails and how they emphasized authentic, balanced flavors and supported that with retro-inspired branding and educational elements like listing ingredients. Neal and Yoni also talk about Tip Top's collaborations with renowned bartenders such as Sam Ross and Joaquín Simó and how it reinforced the brand's credibility and dedication to cocktail culture. They also explain how Tip Top has relied on grassroots marketing, standout packaging, and word-of-mouth to build its brand, with its 100 mL can seen as both stylish and practical and how the company has earned respect within the hospitality industry and among professional bartenders. They explain why they continue to personally taste each batch of cocktails and have scrapped full runs when standards weren't met and how “building a brand people would truly miss” if it left the market is their North Star. Brands in this episode: Tip Top Cocktails, Straightaway Cocktails, Post Meridiem

Think about the last time you dealt with someone you were trying really hard to be professional with. Despite multiple miscommunications on their part — and what was clearly laziness, apathy, and them mailing it in — you kept trying to be the adult. You kept overcompensating for their lack of effort. You kept telling yourself, “Hold yourself to a higher standard.” But it's still getting you nowhere. You want to lose it. You want to let them have it. But you hesitate — because everything in leadership and communication says “keep your cool.” So the question becomes: At what point does that restraint stop helping and start hurting? At what point are you completely justified in going old-school — 1950s dad style — and giving someone a full-on ass-chewing? What You'll Learn: •How to recognize when it's time to stop playing nice and start holding the line •A real-world filter to help you decide when to confront someone directly •Why giving someone the business doesn't mean losing your professionalism •How to hit someone with hard truth — without losing your message or your control Why It Matters: If you lead, coach, manage, or parent — this will give you a concrete decision-making lens for high-friction moments. You'll stop second-guessing yourself when someone needs to be checked, and you'll know how to do it in a way that's firm, clear, and productive. Come see us in:
A bold, minimalist blend of bourbon, coffee liqueur, and orange bitters, The Revolver looks like a Manhattan, leans like an Old Fashioned, and tastes like neither. Created by Jon Santer in the early 2000's, it proved to be a slow burn at first but it's since gone on to become a heavyweight among modern classics, featured on menus around the world. Listen on to hear how it all unfolded from Jon Santer himself, including how a debate with jazz musicians would inspire the Revolver's name; how an act of resistance against the local cocktail movement of the time would influence its composition; and how a flaming orange coin tied everything together. Oh, and don't forget to like, subscribe, and leave us a review wherever you get your podcasts! Jon Santer's Revolver Recipe - 2 ounces Bulleit bourbon or rye - ½ ounce Tia Maria coffee liqueur - 4 dashes "Feegan's" orange bitters (2:1 blend of Regan's to Fee Brothers) - Garnish: Orange coin Directions 1. Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir until well chilled. 2. Strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass pulled straight from the freezer. 3. Flame an orange coin over the top using a match then discard.

President Donald Trump is expected to wrap up the first major international trip of his second term today when he returns from the Middle East. His four-day trip to the Gulf was less about good, old-fashioned diplomacy, and more about doing deals. Lots of them: a $600 billion investment agreement with Saudi Arabia, the details of which remain extremely vague; a nearly $150 billion defense deal with the Kingdom; a major artificial intelligence deal with the United Arab Emirates. And of course, there's that gifted plane from the Qatari Royal Family. Mohammed Sergie, Gulf editor for Semafor, talks about what Trump accomplished on his trip. Plus, author Casey Johnston joins us to talk about her new book, 'A Physical Education: How I Escaped Diet Culture and Gained the Power of Lifting.'And in headlines: The Supreme Court appeared torn over the enforcement of Trump's order to end birthright citizenship, Russian President Vladimir Putin was a no-show at planned peace talks with Ukraine in Turkey, and Walmart executives said the company will have to raise prices because of Trump's tariffs.Show Notes:Read Mohammed's reporting: https://www.semafor.com/author/mohammed-sergieRead Casey's newsletter: https://www.shesabeast.co/Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
