In today's episode of How Humans Heal I'm talking with Heather Aardema. She is the founder of the School of Living Lighter and is a Board Certified Decluttering Coach who helps people understand what's underneath the reason for clutter using a holistic approach. I'm so glad to have her here with us to help us understand what a different it can make and how to get started. Needing to declutter is quite common. I, myself have been going through a decluttering process the past couple of years while rebuilding my house, so I know firsthand how valuable it is. And I was talking to a patient the other day whose daughter recently went to college. She was experiencing "empty nest syndrome" and found herself looking around her home thinking "what is all this stuff doing here?" When we realize that our desk is piled with stuff and the drawers are overfilled, that's when we know we need to declutter. To some degree, it's part of the human experience because we're so busy keeping up with life. When we finally go through a change that allows us to take time to look around our space, that's when we realize that we have too much stuff and need to declutter. But what if all the clutter is having a negative impact on our health and out life? What if we become intentional about decluttering? What kinds of shifts could happen when we get to the bottom of the pile and create space? Heather shares that it can make a massive difference in our day-to-day life when we address our clutter. The clutter feels heavy, and it's not just a feeling. There's physiology to clutter. If we perceive it, our cortisol is going to go through the roof. Our stuff is more energy than matter, and it really can make an impact on how we show up, the decisions that we make, and the way we live our lives. We're here to help you! I am so thrilled to be welcoming Jason Vitug back to the podcast for this episode! As a reminder or in case you didn't hear that episode (if you didn't, I definitely recommend going back and giving it a listen), Jason is an author, entrepreneur, and former credit union executive, and our conversation today focuses on the financial struggles many people are facing due to the rising cost of living and other economic factors. Jason explains how people across the whole country, whether in big cities or small towns, are struggling to make ends meet, impacting their overall well-being and mood. He notes that frugality is making a comeback as people try to stretch their dollars further, but he advocates for a more holistic approach to financial wellness, focusing on maximizing the value of one's time rather than just cutting corners. Our discussion gets into the challenges of affordability, particularly in the housing market, with Jason citing some research that shows that there is actually a surplus of homes available, but many are priced out of reach for younger generations. He is critical of "solutions" like 50-year mortgages, arguing that they may provide short-term relief but don't address the root issues, and, as a business owner and leader, he shares how he has had to make tough decisions to stay true to his values and purpose, even when it meant walking away from some lucrative contracts. He also stresses the importance of leaders aligning their actions with their stated values, as this filters down to impact the entire team.I also share a similar experience of firing a client who was not a good fit, despite the short-term financial impact, and we talk about how removing "dead weight" can actually lead to greater long-term growth and joy by allowing you to focus on your best clients and employees. Our conversation overall highlights the need for both personal and organizational leaders to take a more holistic approach to financial decisions and growth, and Jason offers some great advice for listeners on how to start this journey even when facing significant financial challenges!Time Stamps:[01:52] - Jason introduces himself as an author focused on financial wellbeing as well as a former credit-union exec.[03:10] - Jason explains that people everywhere feel financial strain and are looking for ways to stretch limited income.[06:47] - Jason argues that housing is unaffordable because expensive luxury houses dominate the market despite a surplus of homes.[09:32] - I reflect on growth - our personal and leadership choices often deepen financial pitfalls.[12:17] - Jason stresses intentional growth, noting leaders must prune misaligned pursuits to protect foundations.[15:04] - Hear Jason describe having rejected lucrative clients because their profit-driven values clashed with his purpose.[17:55] - I describe choosing values over income.[21:07] - Aligning decisions with values attracts better clients and eases team stress.[24:55] - Financial freedom enables value-based choices and urges tiny progress toward stability.[27:35] - Jason explains that past mistakes don't define us and urges creating a vision-led financial plan.[29:58] - Jason stresses that owning past financial choices and drafting a plan is si important for change.[32:37] - Jason stresses the importance of building an emergency safety net so that crises don't derail stability.[33:38] - Jason reveals where he can be found online and encourages listeners to grab his books.Resources:The Accidental Leader - Websiteyournarketing.cobo@yourmarketingco.comBo McDonald on LinkedInThe Accidental Leader - “Finding balance in your leadership life with Special Guest: Jason Vitug”Jason Vitug on LinkedInJason Vitug on InstagramJason Vitug - Happy Money Happy Life: A Multidimensional Approach to Health, Wealth, and Financial FreedomJason Vitug - Make Your Money Smile: A Personal Finance How-To Guide to Manage, Earn, Grow, Borrow, and Protect Your WealthJason Vitug - You Only Live Once: The Roadmap to Financial Wellness and a Purposeful LifePhroogal - Website

The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In today's conversation, I'm sitting down with Tyler Moore—better known as Tidy Dad—and this one genuinely surprised me in the best way. We went way beyond "clean your room" tactics and dove into how clutter quietly taxes our patience, steals our mornings, and robs us of presence with the people we love. Tyler breaks down simple, doable systems that turn chaos into calm—especially for us dads navigating careers, marriage, and raising kids. We talk about the launch-pad front door setup that ends morning scrambles, the capsule wardrobe that eliminates decision fatigue, how to get your kids on board without battles or tears, and how to choose the right starting point so you build momentum instead of overwhelm. If you want more laughter, connection, and leadership at home—and fewer frantic searches for keys—this episode will hit you right where you need it. Timeline Summary [0:00] – Introduction [1:01] – Why "less mess = more presence" and how clutter taxes patience, marriage, and mornings. [3:10] – Tyler on why tidying starts with accepting that life will get messy—and how systems prevent spirals. [4:47] – The hidden cost of small daily stressors (like losing your keys) and why routines create mental clarity. [7:21] – The extremes of "perfectly tidy" vs. "messy house, happy family"… and where most dads actually fall. [17:05] – The front-door "launch pad": a simple system that ends the morning chaos for good. [18:24] – Tyler's game-changing capsule wardrobe that eliminates decision fatigue (and why kids notice). [26:30] – Why most big organizing projects fail—and how to start small by identifying the real pain point. [33:24] – How to get kids involved without tears by starting with low-stakes categories and giving them ownership. [47:09] – Lessons learned from the "bedroom switch meltdown" and communicating as a couple before changing systems. [51:52] – Why intentional living beats comparison, and how to define "just enough" for your family. Five Key Takeaways Clutter steals more than space — it steals presence. Small daily frustrations compound into bigger emotional and relational consequences. Systems beat motivation. Creating "launch pads," routines, and predictable spots for essentials protects your mornings and your mindset. Start tiny, not huge. The big whole-house overhauls usually fail; momentum comes from solving one specific pain point at a time. Kids thrive when they're part of the process. Beginning with low-stakes categories (like socks or pajamas) builds confidence, ownership, and calm. Define "just enough" for your family. You don't need the fanciest home or the most stuff—intentional choices create more freedom, clarity, and connection. In this episode, Asher and Dusty explore the complexities of organizing for people with ADHD. Asher shares insights from his background as a professional organizer and ADHD coach, emphasizing that traditional organization methods often don't fit the unique needs of ADHD brains. They discuss the difference between situational and chronic disorganization, highlighting that organizing is not a one-time fix but requires ongoing maintenance, especially for those with ADHD. Dusty introduces the concept of chores as cyclical care tasks, helping shift the mindset away from “done or not done” thinking, which can reduce overwhelm and perfectionism. The conversation also tackles common challenges such as inventory management, limiting beliefs around decluttering, and the importance of customizing organizing systems to individual needs rather than aspiring to unrealistic standards. Strategies such as breaking projects into smaller pieces, sorting belongings into friends, acquaintances, and strangers, and using “partway gone” boxes are shared to help manage belongings thoughtfully. The hosts underscore that organization looks different for everyone and encourage listeners to find practical solutions that work for their lifestyle while balancing priorities and self-compassion. In this solo episode, Darin reframes one of the most misunderstood forces in life — stress. Instead of seeing it as the enemy, he explores how stress is actually a messenger, guiding you back to alignment, safety, and awareness. Through science, spirituality, and lived experience, Darin breaks down how stress shows us where we're trying to control, where we're disconnected, and where our nervous system is calling for attention. He unpacks the layers of modern stress — from trauma and environment to community and purpose — and offers practical, embodied tools to restore calm, clarity, and resilience. If you've been craving more ease, intimacy, and prosperity, this one's a must-listen. I used to think I just needed better bins or a new system. But what I've learned is that we often do everything around the clutter: labeling, sorting, reorganizing, instead of facing the real decisions that bring peace and freedom. In this episode, I share why clutter is a lot like moving credit card debt around instead of paying it off, and how slowing down can help you find calm before the holidays. ✨ Join me for The Calm Before the Holidays Reset: a 2-day guided experience to clear space, calm your mind, and enjoy a peaceful holiday season. When is it? Day 1: Monday, November 17th at 11 am PST / 2 pm EST Day 2: Tuesday, November 18th at 11 am PST / 2 pm EST Click here to reserve your spot
Flat surfaces have a funny way of becoming clutter magnets — until the holidays hit, and suddenly we want them to look styled, intentional, and Instagram-worthy. The problem? It's easy to go from “simple and festive” to “every inch covered.” In this episode, I'll teach you my signature LDHTR method (Layers + Depth + Height + Texture + Repetition) — the simple formula that works on mantles, shelves, tables, even pianos. You'll learn how to: Define the purpose of your surface (function + beauty!) Start fresh with a blank slate Curate your items by category or story before styling Layer intentionally for balance and flow Take a photo to see what your eye might miss in real life By the end, you'll know exactly how to create surfaces that look polished, personal, and ready for the holidays. Have you ever stood in front of a bursting closet wondering what to wear? Or maybe you've spent 15 minutes searching for your child's missing shoe, only to find two mismatched and slightly-too-small sandals from last summer as you run out the door. We've all been there, and we can agree: clutter doesn't just take up space. It takes up time. Emily McDermott, a virtual and in-person decluttering coach, is here to share how you can radically simplify your life and get that time back to focus on what matters most.
