7 Insomnia Maintaining Habits

In this episode of Insomnia Insight, Coach Daniel explores 7 common habits that can unintentionally keep insomnia going — and how changing these patterns can make sleep feel easier and more natural again. From constantly researching sleep problems to tracking sleep data obsessively, these habits often come from a genuine desire to feel safe, reassured, and in control. But paradoxically, they can increase pressure, anxiety, and self-monitoring around sleep. Coach Daniel walks through each habit compassionately, emphasizing that these patterns are not personal failures, but understandable responses from a mind trying to help. Turning the Insomnia Anniversary Upside Down In this Mining the Comments episode, Daniel explores a surprisingly common experience in insomnia recovery: the “insomnia anniversary.” For some, the anniversary of when insomnia began can trigger fear that the struggle may return — even after months of sleeping well. For others, reaching the one-year mark while still struggling can create discouragement and thoughts like: “Will this ever end?” In this episode, we explore: Why insomnia anniversaries can feel emotionally charged What “return concern” really is Why insomnia is maintained by attempts to control sleep How “speed bumps” differ from setbacks or relapses Why a year of struggle does NOT mean something is wrong with you The role of self-kindness in healing How the insomnia anniversary can eventually become a symbol of growth rather than fear One of the central insights in this episode: Insomnia itself does not “come back” on an anniversary date — what can return is the urge to monitor, control, or prevent sleeplessness. Daniel also shares an encouraging reminder that insomnia recovery rarely has a clear ending date. Instead, it tends to fade gradually as fear and pressure dissolve.     If you're ready to leave insomnia for good, check out our coaching options. The Big "Aha" Moment

How does insomnia actually end? In this episode of Insomnia Insight, we explore a powerful and often overlooked truth: while many people can pinpoint the exact moment their insomnia started, almost no one can say exactly when it ended. So what does that tell us? Daniel (sleep physician turned sleep coach) shares three key insights from working with thousands of people who have overcome insomnia:  Why insomnia doesn't end with a single “aha” moment • How “aha chasing” can actually keep you stuck • The illusion behind success stories and recovery timelines Why there's no clear “graduation day” from insomnia The reality is simple—but freeing: insomnia doesn't suddenly disappear. It fades. It loses momentum. It quietly exits. If you've been waiting for a breakthrough moment to fix everything, this episode might change how you see your progress—and help you move forward with less pressure.   If you're ready to leave insomnia for good, check out our coaching options. Is sleep deprivation really the same as being drunk? You may have heard claims online saying that not getting enough sleep can impair you just like alcohol. But is this actually supported by science? In this episode of Heard Online, sleep physician turned Sleep Coach Daniel investigates the research behind these headlines. We take a closer look at several studies often used to support this claim and examine what they actually show. You'll learn why many headlines about sleep deprivation can be misleading, how laboratory reaction-time tests differ from real-world performance, and why the things that truly matter in daily life may not be as affected by poor sleep as commonly believed. If worries about sleep deprivation have been keeping you up at night, this episode offers an evidence-based perspective that may help put those fears into context. She opens up about the loneliness of insomnia, the pressure of work obligations, and why traditional CBT-I methods didn't provide the long-term relief she needed. Discover the turning point in Victoria's recovery—from taking a necessary leave from work to rebuild her confidence, to rediscovering joy and rhythm in her life. For years, Candace prided herself on her ability to sleep anywhere and catch up on rest with micro-naps, even while working night shifts and raising three children. However, a trip for her sister-in-law's wedding weekend acted as a "quick trigger" for her sleep struggles. Between a three-hour time difference, social anxiety, and being out of her routine, Candice experienced her first accidental all-nighter since her teenage years. The real struggle began when she realized she could no longer rely on the "good old nap" to save her. This realization pushed her into a cycle of "hundreds of fix-its" and constant "brain math," where she was perpetually calculating hours of wakefulness and searching for a solution. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend!   I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Pati: how do you lower and keep cholesterol low during early menopause and when you have Familial Hypercholesterolemia. I have 315 total /240 LDL/70HDL/50 Trig. I am 5.4 height, 120lb and gluten free and dairy free for 13yrs and eat very low carbs and sugar. Never taken statins because they make my joints hurt but had high cholesterol for years but 300 was my highest. What can I take that can help and what should i eat. Thank you Pati      Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral. Just wanted to confirm. Podcast 3576 reviewed a PubMed study that gave a minimum daily dosage of 10,800 FU to obtain desired results. The podcast gave me the impression that your supplement exceeded the 10,800 FU/day since only the 20,000 FU number was given. However, 3 plus does per day would be needed? Please can you clarify? Proteolytic Enzyme supplement. Natto Serving dosage on label is - (20,000 FU/g) 150mg My understanding is Natto amount is 3,000 FU 20,000 FU/g x .150g =3,000 Is this correct?      Ashley: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have a detox meal timing question for you. When I did my last set of the big 5 labs, my health coach told me that it would be OK for me to eat at 8 and 3 instead of 11:30 and 6:30 as I feel much better when I fuel my body in the morning. When I don't, I feel ravenous in the evening. However, the admin in the FB group disagreed and said I shouldn't do that. Can you please clarify and let me know how big of a difference it makes to eat later instead of earlier? I feel like if eating earlier in the day helps me actually stick to the foods I'm supposed to eat and I'm still fasting for the same lengths of time that  it would be OK. If it's a bigger deal than I realize, will you please explain the reasoning? Thanks so much!      Tommy: Hi Dr. C, I'm an IHP who's come a long way with healing, but I feel stuck for the remainder. I've attempted a detox only once in my life. After the 4th day I was so wiped out that I couldn't really even work. I've also got high heavy metals but the protocol causes me such histamine reactions (even at a lower dose) that I just can't see it through. I feel stuck, I play for a soccer team but even training is too hard on my nervous system and leaves me wired. Maybe I should just try gentler detox like sauna and castor oil packs but I'm not sure it will be enough, and the sauna may just deplete me further. I've suffered so much with health and I'm in a better place, but still much work left to do.      Lou: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am 15 and listen to your podcast every morning on the way to school with my mom. I was wondering, what would you say are your 5 favorite books? They dont have to be health books. thanks, Lou    Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right!   - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3670 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Her comment captures a major breakthrough in understanding what “leaving the struggle” truly means when it comes to insomnia, anxiety, and difficult nights. Rather than perfect sleep or never feeling anxious, leaving the struggle is about changing how we respond to choppy nights, tired days, and anxious thoughts. Linnea realized that when we stop trying to control sleep and stop reacting to every setback, the struggle itself begins to fade. You'll learn: Why leaving the struggle does not mean perfect sleep every night How acceptance interrupts the cycle of insomnia and anxiety What Daniel means by “immunity” to sleep struggles How over-efforting, monitoring, and safety behaviors keep sleep problems going Why peace of mind comes from letting go, not fixing This conversation is filled with hope, clarity, and encouragement for anyone navigating insomnia or sleep anxiety.

Why do sleep supplements, routines, trackers, and techniques so often fail to fix insomnia? In this episode, sleep physician-turned-sleep coach Daniel explains a powerful truth most people never hear. Sleep is a passive process. Insomnia is an active process. If you are trying to force sleep through products, habits, breathing, exercise, tracking, or mental control, you may be unintentionally keeping insomnia alive. This episode breaks down how insomnia is maintained by effort, control, and avoidance, why common sleep solutions backfire, and how letting go of sleep effort allows natural sleep to return. Insomnia insight with Daniel Erichsen

In this episode of Insomnia Insight, Coach Daniel explores one of the most powerful tools for ending the insomnia–anxiety loop: the pause button. If you've found yourself stuck in a cycle of poor sleep, stress, and constant worry about both, this episode will bring clarity. Coach Daniel explains how insomnia and anxiety aren't cycles by themselves—they become cycles when we respond to normal experiences (like a choppy night or a worried thought) with efforts to control, prevent, or suppress them. And paradoxically, it's that very effort that keeps the struggle going. Inspired by a conversation inside the Insomnia Immunity Program, Coach Daniel breaks down: Why a single night of poor sleep or a moment of anxiety isn't a cycle How our automatic attempts to fix or stop discomfort actually create the loop What the “pause button” really is and why it changes everything How simply observing your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors opens the door to a new option Why non-response (acceptance, floating, befriending) allows the cycle to fade on its own How peaceful sleep returns when effort and control fall away If you're new here and curious to learn more, our FREE video course, The Festival of Understanding, is the perfect place to start.
