Fr. George Calciu (+2006) was one of the great confessors of Christianity in the twentieth century. Having survived the diabolic prison experiments of Communist Romania, Fr. George went on to become an apostle to spiritual seekers in Romania and, eventually, throughout the world. He was able to speak authoritatively of God's love and forgiveness because of his own experience of God's mercy. As a priest in America, Fr. George maintained a strict ascetic life of fasting and prayer, while at the same time pastoring his flock as a joyful and loving father. This reading comes from “Father George Calciu: Interview, Homilies, and Talks” by St. Herman Press. We begin with the introduction written by Fr. Seraphim Rose followed by the first two homilies of seven that Fr. George gave in Romania in 1978 to students who had been raised and education in Communist Romania. Fr. George gave these homilies when many fellow clergy were silent about the persecution facing the Church and the restriction of freedom to teach and preach Christ to the people. 0:00 Title 0:16 Introduction by Fr. George teaches: The time has come, young man, for you to hear a voice which has been calling you. It is a voice you have never heard before, or perhaps, one you have heard but which you have never understood or obeyed. It is the voice of Jesus! Don't be shocked; don't be amazed, and don't smile incredulously, my young friend! The voice which calls you is not that of a dead man, but of One Who has risen from the dead. He does not shout after you from history, but from out of the depths of your own inner being. Come to the Church of Christ! Only here will you find consolation for your ravished soul. Only in the Church will you find certainty, because only in the Church will you hear the voice of Jesus saying meekly to you: “Son, all your sins are forgiven. You have suffered much. Behold, I have made you whole; go and sin no more.” You are in Christ's Church whenever you uplift someone bent down in sorrow, or when you give alms to the poor and visit the sick. You are in Christ's Church when you cry out: “Lord, help me”. You are in Christ's Church when you are good and patient, when you refuse to get angry at your brother, even if he has wounded your feelings. You are in Christ's Church when you pray: “Lord, forgive him”. When you work honestly at your job, returning home weary in the evenings but with a smile upon your lips, when you repay evil with love —you are in Christ's Church. Do you not see, therefore, young friend, how close the Church of Christ is? You are Peter and God is building His Church upon you. You are the rock of His Church against which nothing can prevail. You are a liberated rock, a soul that is fulfilled within His Church, and not one condemned to stagnation. Let us build churches with our faith. Churches which no human power can pull down. A church whose foundation is Christ. Let us build churches in our enlightened hearts where there shines the bright Sun of Righteousness, Who is Christ Himself, He Who has told us that by faith we are free from sin. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/orthodox-wisdom/message

Matthew 9:9 — What does it mean to be called by the Lord Jesus Christ? In this sermon on Matthew 9:9 titled “The Call of Christ,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones looks to the example of Matthew, a tax collector whom Jesus called one day. Matthew responds to this call by leaving his old sinful life behind and committing himself to Christ. This demonstrates that the call to be a Christian is a call to leave behind the old way of living and to seek Christ Jesus and His kingdom. It is an uncompromising commitment to love God and follow His commandments, not out of self-preservation, but out of a new love for God and neighbor. To be a Christian is to follow Jesus and to obey His commandments. This is done first and foremost by believing in His gospel and the fact that He is the Savior sent from God. How does this apply today? Being a Christian in modern times is fundamentally the same as it has always been because it is about following Christ and believing in His gospel. It is about trusting in Jesus in the midst of suffering and persecution, and pursuing God in all aspects of life. The call to be a Christian is one that all must accept because it is the only way to eternal life.
There is no call higher than the call of Christ on your life. Have you responded to His call?

David W. Shenk went home to be with his Lord and Savior this morning, Tuesday, January 31, 2023. We grieve the loss of David's presence here on earth but rejoice that he has been received by his heavenly Father. Next week, we'll spend more time on this program, highlighting the ministries for which God used David and his wife, Grace, for many decades through EMM. This week, we felt like it was appropriate to share some of his own words from his memoir called “A Gentle Boldness.” May you be inspired as you listen to these words from David.
The call of Christ is to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him.

What does Christian leadership look like? What does it mean for leaders to be known as workers for joy? Is it a mistake to view the qualifications as prerequisites for church leadership? Over the years, I have studied a great deal about the land of Israel and the biblical events that happened there. Yet I have never been to the land of Israel, and I know there is a massive difference between reading something in a book and experiencing it in person! In the same way, as we read and study the Old Testament, we are constantly being pointed to and given glimpses of Jesus. But when you arrive at the gospels, He is revealed to us in His glory. No more shadows or glimpses, but right there for us to see and to know and be amazed by. This is why I am so excited about our summer sermon series in the gospel of Jesus according to Luke. Luke will clearly show us Jesus, and my hope and expectation is that we will all come away more drawn to the Son of God than ever before! Welcome to the Summer in the Son series, and I encourage you to leave your (Son)block at home and instead bask in the light of Jesus, Who is the ‘radiance of the glory of God' Hebrews 1:3.

When 5,000 people need to be fed, the contrast between the disciples response and Jesus' response is clear. Jesus' challenge remains so true for us today.
Jesus continues to show us who we truly are and what our need is. He wants us to examine our hearts and be convicted by the Holy Spirit so we will go on to a deeper life in Him. Is our heart truly seeking God and His righteousness or are we still divided in our inward heart? Are we knocking, asking, seeking after Jesus to please God? Have we entered by the narrow gate and found the abundant life in Jesus? Are we building our lives on Jesus and His truth or the false philosophies of men? Do our lives withstand the storms of life or do we fall apart and chase after the things of the world to escape our misery? Are we experiencing the deeper life of sanctification in the Holy Spirit because of our love for Jesus?
“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” The religious persons of the day asked Jesus this question, and it's still a question to be asked today. As we explore Jesus' answer this Sunday during worship, may we identify with those Jesus calls upon, understand Jesus' calling and respond to the call for the Church as seen in our study of Luke 5.
