Adam Clark: Black Christology from Howard Thurman to James Cone

Homebrewed Christianity Podcast

Holy smokes, theology nerds – buckle up for a prophetic ride through Black Christology that'll completely recalibrate your understanding of Jesus and faith in times of empire. I am joined by Dr. Adam Clark as he traces the revolutionary lineage from Howard Thurman's mystical Jesus who refuses the "hounds of hell" (after being called a traitor to dark peoples for following Christianity), through Albert Cleage's literal Black Messiah who'd be riding in the colored section of Jim Crow buses, to James Cone's God who shows up at the lynching tree. At a moment when Christian nationalism weaponizes the gospel to enforce xenophobic authoritarianism, this prophetic tradition reminds us that authentic Christian witness is found in loving solidarity with the crucified of today. This isn't polite reflection, friends – it's resistance theology that exposes how God deliberately identifies with the oppressed, choosing foolishness to shame the wise and weakness to shame the strong. This episode might flip your theological world upside down, but that's precisely what good theology should do. To get Adam's lecture and four more, join the class,The Many Faces of Christ Today. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Dr. Adam Clark is Associate Professor of Theology at Xavier University. He currently serves as co-chair of Black Theology Group at the American Academy of Religion, actively publishes in the area of black theology and black religion and participates in social justice groups at Xavier and in the Cincinnati area. Grace Ji-Sun Kim: Feminist Christology

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Grace Ji-Sun Kim's to discuss Feminist Christology. We explore the importance of retrieving feminine imagery of God and Jesus through the biblical wisdom figure Sophia. She argues that despite Jesus's historical maleness, a feminist Christological approach is essential for contemporary Christianity because it challenges 2000 years of patriarchal interpretations and creates more inclusive understandings of the divine. The conversation traces Sophia's development across Hebrew Scripture, demonstrating how early Christians identified Jesus with this feminine divine figure, particularly in Paul's letters, Matthew, and John. Kim connects Sophia with Asian religious concepts like prajna, suggesting that this wisdom Christology offers liberating possibilities for Korean North American women navigating bicultural identities. She points out that feminist theologians are not inventing new concepts but reclaiming a significant biblical tradition that portrays God's presence in feminine imagery, which was largely eclipsed in later Christian history due to patriarchal influences. Paul Capetz: The Two Paths of Liberal Christology

Homebrewed Christianity Podcast

In this session, we are joined by historical theologian, Dr. Paul Capetz. Dr. Capetz, a minister in the United Methodist Church and former theology professor at various Protestant seminaries, discusses liberal Christology and its limitations. While identifying as a liberal theologian who seeks to reconcile Protestant heritage with Enlightenment thinking, Capetz argues that traditional liberal Christology is fundamentally flawed. He explains that liberal theologians like Friedrich Schleiermacher attempted to reconstruct the historical Jesus using modern historical analysis, but this approach faces insurmountable challenges. Following Rudolf Bultmann, whom Capetz considers the greatest New Testament scholar of the 20th century, he contends that a biography of Jesus cannot be written due to limited reliable historical sources. More importantly, Capetz argues that Christology shouldn't be based on speculations about Jesus's relationship with God, but rather on the apostles' witness to Jesus as the decisive revelation of God's love. Despite his fascination with the historical Jesus question, Capetz believes that the liberal approach of grounding Christology in historical reconstruction is both historically impossible and theologically misguided. Ruben Rosario Rodriguez: Barth, Moltmann, and Reformed Christology

In this session, Dr. Ruben Rosario Rodriguez provides an overview of Reformed Christology, focusing on the theological contributions of two key 20th century Reformed theologians: Karl Barth and Jürgen Moltmann. He begins by introducing the Reformed tradition's historical roots in 16th century Calvinism and its emphasis on social responsibility. It then examines Barth's Christocentric theology, which emphasizes God's transcendence and self-revelation in Christ as the only source of knowledge about God. Barth rejected liberal Protestantism's subjective approach and insisted on Christ as the center of all theology. He then transitions to Moltmann, whose theology developed in the shadow of the Holocaust. Moltmann rejected the doctrine of divine impassibility, arguing that God suffers with humanity, particularly through Christ on the cross. His Trinitarian theology emphasizes God as a community of equals and has political implications, including the church's responsibility to critique society and work toward justice. Both theologians maintain that Christ's suffering reveals God's solidarity with the oppressed and offers hope for transformation. Summary: People through out the ages have carried the mantle of the Word of God. We follow Jesus Christ as a pattern of what the Father wants from His sons. Today God has raised up a people who have the Spirit of Christ within them and have taken up this mantel of the Word of God as a key part of Christ coming again in a many membered body. Show Notes: The mantle of the Word of God has been carried by many people down through the ages. Through a spiritual genealogy, certain qualities of spirit have been imparted and passed down in God's family. Today a people are picking up the mantle of Christ and are walking it out. Many mantels exist it the world today; all are Christ. There are different expressions, anointing s and groups; all are Christ. Each person must decide to pick up this mantle out of their free will. Because God is raising up the Body of Christ, this mantel is beginning to rest on groups of people as they walk together. It's not about just one person or a couple. The anointing is resting on God's family. It is the responsibility of God's people to take up this mantle and walk it out. Quotes: We've chosen to live under the mantle of Christ, by virtue of our relationship to the Father. There were people all through the ages, that were examples of the mantle, of carrying the mantle, the mantle of the Word of God. God has raised up His family, who are the product of their ancestry. When you're born from above, you were born into a genealogy that included Ruth, David, Zachariah, Elizabeth, there was a genealogy. ...there's a spiritual genealogy of impartation, that's went down through the ages, and it's never stopped. Do we believe it? Do we believe that we have the mantle, do we believe we have the authority? Do we believe that we can walk in these things? ...most recently, He...

Summary: Does God in the sky meet us? Or is it in our brothers and sisters? It says, “Christ in you, the Hope of Glory”, do we believe this? Where is Christ? Is He not in His creation, all around us? It is our minds that limit how we perceive the Christ. We need to stop going around the mountain and climb it. Show notes: We thought that it was God in the sky that should come down and meet with us. But we are finding that it is Christ others that He chooses to meet us today. If we become to familiar with someone, then we know them after the flesh and probably will not hear Christ from them. It is “Christ in you, the hope of glory” that I must open up to, it so real and practical and not so much ethereal but through faith. He chooses imperfect human vessels to minister. Our minds are what limit how Christ can minister to each of us, if we are attuned to His word and are paying attention then we will hear Him speak to us. As we seek Him, He will be known by us. We need to stop “going around the mountain” and restore mankind's relationship with the Father. References: Hebrews 1:13 13. But to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at MY right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? Hebrews 10:13 13. waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. Romans 8:9-11 9. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of god dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 2 Corinthians 4:7 7. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; Numbers 11:23 23. The Lord said to Moses, “Is the Lord's power limited? Now you shall see whether My word will come true for you or not.” Job 11:7 7. “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? Numbers 22:28,30 28. And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” 30. The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I ever been accustomed to do so to you?” And he said, “No.” Jeremiah 29:13 13. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. 1 Samuel 14:6 6. Then Jonathan said to the young man who was carrying his armor, “Come and let us cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; perhaps the Lord will work for us, for the Lord is not restrained to save by many or by few.” Colossians 1:27 To whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory Ephesians 4:16, 29 16. from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. 29. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Exodus 15:17 17. “You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance, The place, O Lord, which you have made for Your dwelling, The sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. From the Journey of the Mind to God by St Bonaventure Mystical wisdom is revealed by the Holy Spirit Christ is both the way and the door. Christ is the staircase and the vehicle, like the throne of mercy over the Ark of the Covenant, and the mystery hidden from the ages. A man should turn his full attention to this throne of mercy, and should gaze at him hanging on the cross, full of faith, hope and charity, devoted, full of wonder and joy, marked by gratitude, and open to praise and jubilation. Then such a man will make with Christ a pasch, that is, a passing-over. Through the branches of the cross he will pass over the Red Sea, leaving Egypt and entering the desert. There he will taste the hidden manna, and rest with Christ in the sepulchre, as if he were dead to things outside. He will experience, as much as is possible for one who is still living, what was promised to the thief who hung beside Christ: Today you will be with me in paradise.
