Christ is again followed by a large hungry crowd, this time consisting of primarily gentiles. After showing compassion on the gentile Syrophoenician woman (7:24–30) and the healing of the gentile man (vv. 31–37), not Jesus shows that He is the compassionate shepherd who feeds (spiritually and physically) those who would come to Him from any nation (8:1–9). This faithful reception is not mirrored by the religious leaders in Israel who instead of receiving His teaching ask for signs to prove His identity (vv. 10–13). Jesus refuses to allow them to “put the Lord to the test” and refuses with emotive compassion. The question left to the reader is: Will I scrutinize and put the Lord to the test, or will I receive His word with humility?

This Sunday, we enter a new section of the gospel of Mark. Having seen four demonstrations of Christ's authority, culminating in His authority to forgive sins. The next four passages show us the religious leaders' opposition to Jesus, which leads to their resolution to destroy Christ (Mark 3:6). Last week, as Christ forgave and healed the paralytic, we saw the beginning of this opposition as scribes viewed Jesus' authority to forgive sins as blasphemy. In Mark 2:13-17, Jesus calls one of the most despised and immoral people in Hebrew culture - a Jewish tax collector. As Jesus continues to proclaim the Kingdom of God, calling people to repent and believe the gospel, He shows that this salvation is even open to the worst of sinners. Not only that, but Jesus fellowships at table with the worst of sinners. Christ's association with sinners brings the opposition of "scribes of the Pharisees," who saw this as an act of defilement. Jesus responds with a well-known proverb saying, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17). This is both a glorious welcome for sinners and a warning for those who see themselves as righteous by their works (as the Pharisees did). Jesus is a friend of sinners, but He is not a friend of sin. In Luke's account of this event, Jesus says, "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:32). A sure sign of the Kingdom of God breaking into the life of a sinner is repentance and faith. When Jesus calls Levi, who is probably well-known and hated for his extortion of the people of Capernaum, He calls him to leave everything behind and follow Jesus. Sunday, we will examine Levi's call, this fellowship meal of sinners, and Jesus' warning to the self-righteous. I. Jesus Calls The Worst Of Sinners (v. 13-14) II. Jesus Fellowships With The Worst Of Sinners (v. 15-16) III. Jesus Calls Sinners Not Self-Righteous (v. 17)

After showing the Pharisees the true meaning of sabbath resulting in their further hatred (2:23–3:6), Jesus withdraws to the Sea of Galilee where multitudes came to Him. The multitude pressed in on Him seeking healings so that Jesus appointed twelve delegates (apostles) to learn from Him, preach, and exercise His authority.
Have you ever had family members turn on you? Or maybe they relocted or passed away? We know that that loss hurts. But Jesus said we as Christians gain family in God! Whatever we have lost in this life, we can find in the body of Christ—the church. Let's not turn to substances or isolation when we get hurt. Instead, let's turn to Jesus and our spiritual family.
In this first lesson of 2025, Mark continues the Lesser Known Women of the Bible series by exploring the intriguing reference to the “elect lady” in 2 John. Who is the lady? - A majority of scholars interpret the “elect lady” as a metaphor for the local church - the unified body of Christ chosen by God, living in truth and love. Central Theme: truth in Christ - Mark traces the overarching biblical narrative of God dwelling with humanity: from Eden to the Tabernacle, the Temple, the Church as Christ's body, and within each believer as His image-bearer. Truth is God's authentic and revealed word, never hidden but always genuine. Love and truth both originate from God's divine nature. Modern Application or Take home points: The importance and power of community. Reflect on the lengths God goes to dwell with us. Are we walking with Him? Hold fast to truth and love in our daily lives. Discover how we are part of the “elect lady” and explore God's profound love and desire to dwell with us as we grow in His truth through His Word.
