Andrew Dorland has recently returned to Canada after working as a storyboard artist in Ireland and joined the RAID Studio in Toronto. His travels around the Island have inspired a large bulk of this story and he hopes you enjoy it. His comic credits include South of Yonder for Markosia, and his creator owned comic Scarabs. Sam Noir's credits include Captain Canuck covers for Chapterhouse Comics, Cerebus Low Society, Monstrosity for Alterna, and the popular web comic Fan Fiction. He's co-created kids comics such as Sunny and Owl Girl, Clanky, and Kung Fu Santa. Jordan and Ryan investigate Canadian superheroes, and find wartime heroism, propose Marvel’s next Netflix series, and find out what happens when you have a pile of money, a penchant for New Age thinking and absolutely no editorial oversight. Canada, Explain Yourself: Canada Gooses (https://youtu.be/MWQAJxQfayo) Most of the list was taken from “7 Most Canadian Superheroes Ever” by Mental Floss (https://tinyurl.com/yyyrr8j6). The “Guardians of the North” article from Library and Archives Canada (https://tinyurl.com/d4ha3b) provided a lot of details on various Canadian heroes, especially on the history of superheroes in Canadian comics. Here’s Ryan’s City of Heroes character, True North (TM do not steal) (https://tinyurl.com/y2umhfv4) The “Joe Shuster” article on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Shuster) has details on his time in Canada, but this CBC article (https://tinyurl.com/y3sndql7) and this Superman Homepage article (https://tinyurl.com/y2zkla2g) have more detail on the Canadian influences on the comic. Here’s a picture of Captain Canuck from his first comic (https://tinyurl.com/y6zwhfr6) and here he is in the new Chapterhouse Comics series (https://tinyurl.com/yxhe3epg). This story talks about how groundbreaking Alpha Flight was for its time.(https://tinyurl.com/y85tjsfj) And as for Geoff Stirling’s Captain Canada, you can read more about the Atlantis graphic novel from this Comic Book Daily article(https://tinyurl.com/y3uk6f3c), and… just read this. Trust me.(https://tinyurl.com/y6c39mod) Thanks to The Motorleague(https://www.themotorleague.ca/) for our theme song “North America”!

Ep 91 - In honour of Mothers' Day, RFK sits down with two writers/artists who take inspiration from their moms: Emmanuelle Chateauneuf and Danny Zabbal. Hear how their mothers influence their children's' storytelling and what they think of their kids' comics. Danny writes "Life Death and Sorcery" and Emmanuelle wrote "Queen Street" for Chapterhouse Comics. To their mothers' chagrin, neither is a mediocre sitcom star nor in a family band. RFK airs first on CJRU 1280 AM in Toronto. This episode was produced by Justin Chandler. PS: Jacob and Mitchell came in partway through the recording, which is why they aren't in the intro. Justin didn't forget them. PPS: Special thanks to RFK's Number 1 Fan: Justin's mom! The love and support are appreciated. Thanks for listening even though you don't really like comics.

Andrew is a comic book writer, podcast host and former Eisner award-winning comic industry journalist who came to Toronto by way of Hastings, England. He was the last editor-in-chief of Comics Alliance, shepherding it towards its 2015 Eisner win for “Best Comics Journalism.” As part of the LGBTQ community, Andrew has always championed representation for all minorities in all of his comics work, starting with Another Castle from Oni Press and continuing with his current work on Freelance from Chapterhouse Comics. Formerly co-written with Jim Zub, (Wayward, Avengers: No Surrender) Freelance re-imagines Canada's oldest superhero swashbuckler as a same-sex love triangle. In studio, Andrew talks about why attracting a diverse readership is integral to the health of the comic book industry as a whole, what creative considerations need to be made when writing a same-sex relationship, as opposed to a hetero one and later he breaks down some of his favourite 2017 Oscar nominees telling listeners what worked narratively-speaking, just like his podcast Story Beater, which he hosts with fellow comic scribe and past Speech Bubble guest Anthony Falcone. If you live in Toronto, you know him as the popular DJ on 102.1 The Edge. But his comic book geek cred is strongest as the writer behind the scifi epic, The Fourth Planet published quarterly by Chapterhouse Comics. He’ll tell us how the idea had its roots in his love of paleo-cultural anthropology (the origins of culture) and how Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet changed his life. Meanwhile, we discuss why the endless crossover events and relaunches are ruining comics, how Fred got his start in radio and why he entered the ring with his own podcast Issue Zero.
