Last week we watched the 1983 made for tv movie The Day After. This weeks, a new piece consisting of sound collage, field recording and sonic composition.
On this week's episode, I'm joined by Tom Nichols—staff writer at the Atlantic, professor emeritus at the U.S. Naval War College, and all-around nuclear arms expert—to discuss Kathryn Bigelow's new nuclear war film A House of Dynamite. On this episode, we discuss how his students reacted to previous nuclear panic films like The Day After and Threads, what the new film from Bigelow and writer Noah Oppenheim gets right about the current state of our nuclear preparedness, and what keeps Tom up at night about the current White House's nuclear posture. You can read Tom's pieces on A House of Dynamite here and here, and he has another up about what the Trump White House doesn't understand about nuclear weapons here. You can read my review of the film here. And if you have thoughts, please sound off in the comments or share this episode with a friend!
A House of Dynamite is a movie designed to generate dread, but do we need something else right now, a picture that points to solutions instead? This question is asked in today's episode as Gareth Higgins and Jett Loe discuss the current political situation in the U.S., A House of Dynamite as a lament and wonder what to do if a train is heading towards us at full speed. Spoilers for Contagion, The Day After, Fail Safe, Dr. Strangelove, Source Code and Conclave. Paul and Erin review two films that take place during the early days of World War III: Nicholas Meyer's blockbuster 1983 TV-movie THE DAY AFTER, and Steve de Jarnatt's quirky 1988 cult movie MIRACLE MILE.
A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE is built on an undeniably hooky premise — a nuclear missile originating from an unknown source is heading right for us — but is that premise enough to support a successful movie? We're joined once again by critic and author Jason Bailey to unpack that question, particularly as it applies to the film's triptych structure and nervy ending gambit. That ending comes back into play when we reintroduce 1964's FAIL SAFE for Connections, to see how Sidney Lumet's Cold War thriller compares to Kathryn Bigelow's modern-day nuclear scenario in their respective depictions of human connection — personal, professional, and adversarial —amid humanity-threatening catastrophe. Then we keep it in the nuclear family for Your Next Picture Show, with a recommendation for the 1983 TV movie THE DAY AFTER, as well as some of its pop-cultural fallout. Please share your thoughts about FAIL SAFE, A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. This week, screenwriter and author Nicholas Meyer discusses his latest mystery novel Sherlock Holmes and the Real Thing. In this latest book, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson delve into the world of art forgery. Meyer is interviewed by Allison Sansone, Director of Programs at the American Writers Museum. This conversation originally took place September 18, 2025 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. We hope you enjoy entering the Mind of a Writer. PODCAST NETWORK HUB More about Sherlock Holmes and the Real Thing: London, 189–: The great city is brought to a standstill by a series of blizzards and Sherlock Holmes is bored to distraction. It would take a miracle to bring a case to the detective's door... What arrives is not promising: a landlady who complains her artist tenant is behind on rent. Not exactly the miracle for which Holmes was hoping. But, next thing you know, there are several corpses and Sherlock Holmes and his biographer, John H. Watson, MD, find themselves drawn into one of the most bizarre cases of the great detective's career. And into the cutthroat big business of Art, where chicanery and mendacity (and cut throats) proliferate. What makes a work of art worth killing for? Is it the artist, his mistress, his dealer, or his blackmailer? The cast of characters is large. But are they perpetrators, accomplices, or victims? And just who is Juliet Packwood, with whom Watson has become infatuated? Oh, and there's one other problem: Is this a genuine Holmes case or a clever forgery? Is this the real thing? If you can't tell the difference, what is the difference? About Nicholas Meyer: NICHOLAS MEYER is the "editor" of several Watson manuscripts, including The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, which spent forty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. His screenplay of the film received an Oscar nomination. His film credits include writing and directing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He wrote and directed Time After Time, co-created Medici: Masters of Florence, and directed The Day After, about nuclear war that attracted the largest audience ever for a television movie. A native of New York City, he lives in Santa Monica, California.
Let's begin by looking backwards. On Sept. 16, Mara and I released an episode on three things you should be doing now to care for yourself. Mara took the lead on that one as we dove into designing your morning, clarifying your identity and mission, and building a sustainable habit of creating you time. As an aside, I'm still enamored with the idea of creating a “third space” in which you can be yourself, without trying to be something for everyone else, and a shoutout to listener and daily email reader Penny Connor for that concept.Last week I did an episode on transitioning from work to home in ways that will make it easier to leave school at school. The three key components were investing time in reflection before walking out of school, listening to personal things (like music or audio books) on your commute home, and having specific practices when you walk in the door to home that signal your body to shift into home mode.I acknowledged then that many of you do have duties that require you to work from home and that we would dive into that today, but before we go there…Sponsor Spot 1:I'd like to thank Kaleidoscope Adventures for sponsoring today's show. This can happen for three primary reasons:You have a duty that specifically requires you to work from homeThere is a real emergencyYour work is your life (the issues you work on are the issues you live with)You view yourself as a martyrLet's look at some general habits for when you MUST work from home and then address each of the other circumstances.Limit who can contact you at home. If you have a work phone, shut it down and allow your boss/important person to reach you via your home phone. Or program your phone to only allow certain people to reach you at certain times (Hint: iPhone's Short Cuts feature is super helpful). Create (and enforce) strict boundaries about what duties are and are not off-limits for being interrupted at home and communicate those to people. If you are in charge of getting subs, control how people reach you and when you will check email. You can also do something like add all your teachers to your favorites and set your email to put all messages from favorites into a special folder. This way, when you open your computer to check email, you only need to look at the favorites folder so you aren't getting sucked into other things. The technology has made it harder to be away from work, but we can also use it to flip the script. Designate a location you go to when you must do work at home, whether that is phone calls, email, or something else. Maintaining physical separation from your normal living areas when you are working is critical! Bonus: make your home workspace uncomfortable so you won't be tempted to spend extra time there. Closet anyone?
Welp. I find myself increasingly bummed by the outside world, and so I decided to cheer up by watching two made-for-television movies from the 1980s about nuclear war: The Day After (1983), directed by Nicholas Meyer and written by Edward Hume, and Threads (1984), directed by Mick Jackson and written by Barry Hines. Click here for the blog version of this episode.
Whether or not you're a Sherlockian, whether or not you believe that Arthur Conan Doyle was the literary agent for Holmes and Watson and not the author of fantastical tales, you might be curious to learn that there's a new mysterious Sherlock Holmes tale to untangle. Author, screenwriter, and director Nicholas Meyer would like to share that tale in his book, Sherlock Holmes and The Real Thing. Picture the setting: London, 189–. The great city is brought to a standstill by a series of blizzards, and Sherlock Holmes is bored to distraction. It would take a miracle to bring a case to the detective's door. . . But next thing you know, there are several corpses—and Holmes and his biographer, John H. Watson, MD, find themselves drawn into one of the most bizarre cases of the great detective's career: the cutthroat world of big Art, where trickery and deceit abound. Like any good Sherlock Holmes story, there seem to be more questions than answers. What makes a work of art worth killing for? Is it the artist, his mistress, his dealer, or his blackmailer? Who are the perpetrators? The accomplices? The victims? And just who is Juliet Packwood, with whom Watson has become infatuated? Oh, and there's one other problem: Is this a genuine Holmes case or a clever forgery? Is this the real thing? Nicholas Meyer spins a tale for new and seasoned Sherlockians alike. Nicholas Meyer is the “editor” of several Watson manuscripts, including The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, which spent forty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. George Meyer wrote for Late Night with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, and The Simpsons. An Eagle Scout, he practices yoga and meditation and supports frog and turtle conservation. SHOW-NOTESFrom Cold War Terror to Algorithm Anxiety In 1983, 100 million Americans watched "The Day After" and couldn't sleep for days. Today, a 13-year-old Russian boy thinks he's playing a video game but is actually designing drone components for Ukraine. We've traded the fear of instant nuclear annihilation for the reality of constant algorithmic surveillance and precision warfare. The Drone Revolution Changes Everything Ukrainian soldiers call it "a thousand snipers in the sky." Drones now cause 70% of battlefield casualties - more than all traditional weapons combined. Ukraine destroyed $7 billion in Russian aircraft using cheap AI-guided drones, and both countries plan to produce millions more in 2025.Silicon Valley Joins the War Machine Tech companies have completely reversed course on military contracts. Google dropped its weapons ban, Meta trains soldiers with VR, and four tech executives were sworn in as Army officers. Defense venture capital surged 33% to $31 billion as Silicon Valley discovers the profit in algorithmic warfare. The Environmental Cost of Combat Global militaries would rank as the world's 4th largest climate polluter. Modern wars create "ecological dead zones" - reducing elephant populations 90% in some areas and killing thousands of dolphins with sonar. As Yuval Harari warns, we're becoming "hackable animals." The question isn't whether we can build smarter weapons, but whether we're smart enough to build a better world.A CALL TO ACT: The World's Most Comprehensive Database of Eco-SolutionsTRUMPING TRUMP: A new survival guide for maintaining focus and sanity while avoiding outrage fatigue. This week we're shaking off the despair of a nuclear war one-two punch and staying in the made-for-tv mode for something incredibly dumb. Where Threads and The Day After are significant television events, this week's movie is anything but. It's a baffling riff on both popular haunted house movies of the era and classic gothic horror but that's about as coherent as the vision gets. Everything that follows is an exhausting exercise in early 80's made-for-tv drivel.Parker Stevenson, fresh off his run as Frank Hardy in the Hardy Boys Mysteries is joined by Lisa Eilbacher, Joan Bennet, and Slim Pickens for a stay at a far-too-modern for gothic horror house in southern California. Either the house itself, or the extremely sophisticated security system is in love with Eilbacher's character. We can't really figure it out. Ultimately it doesn't matter because the charm lies in precisely how artless and strange this movie is. This week we dive back into the breach for another run at nuclear Armageddon with a look at the BBC's 1984 answer to The Day After, Threads. Where The Day After was a bleak movie about the end of the world as a result of nuclear it was still very much a movie. Director Mick Jackson provided an aggressive, bludgeoning alternative that gives it to you with both barrels, an unflinching look at precisely how bad nuclear war will be, backed by data. In this movie you get the specifics.Threads tells the story of an escalating confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union in Iran that leads to World War 3 and the way that it affects the people of Sheffield, England through the eyes of young Ruth Beckett. In short, it'll be very, very bad. We will all die like dogs and it'll be painful and humiliating all the way to the end. Though not a conventional horror movie, Threads is very much appropriate for the genre.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

On November 20, 1983, over one hundred million Americans tuned into ABC to watch a television movie that had a crucial impact on how the country thought about the danger of nuclear weapons. "The Day After" starred Jason Robards, and was set in Lawrence, Kansas. The movie imagined what might happen if nuclear war was to break out, and it didn't hold back on showing realistic and gruesome details. Film Forum is now screening a documentary, "Television Event," about the making of the infamous film. Director Jeff Daniels discusses one of the most controversial movies ever made and listeners share their memories of seeing "The Day After" for the first time.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Geoffrey Aronson, a noted analyst Middle East affairs and formerly the director of the Foundation for Middle East Peace, returns to discuss his latest Responsible Statecraft piece entitled "Israel's plan for Gaza is clear: 'Conquest, expulsion, settlement'". One of the key aspects of Geoffrey's analysis in said article is that Israel is currently pursuing a policy of "politicide", or, as he puts it, "destroying for all time any Palestinian hope for sovereignty west of the Jordan River." We'll be delving into elements of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that long predate the events of October 7th and what has transpired since. For example, Geoffrey will takes us back to 2005 when then Israeli Prime Minister evacuated Israeli settlers from Gaza. We'll also discuss the resurgent right-wing in Israel and its aims in Gaza, how the so-called "Day After" in Gaza is today, a brief excursion into what is happening in Syria and the weakness of Arab states (and what that means), and much, much more.
