This week on Open Sources Guelph we order a side-helping of change and economic concern. The new prime minister and the new-old premier met this week to talk about their common enemy: the crazy person currently occupying the White House. For the other half of the show, we will look to more local concerns with one of the members of city council from the first (in numerical order) ward! This Thursday, March 13, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Carney in Charge. It wasn't exactly a horse race and in the end it seemed like a rocket ship, but Mark Carney is now set to be the next Prime Minister of Canada... but for how long? The once long odds for the Federal Liberals now look better with many polls showing a statistical tie between them and the Conservatives, and Carney already looks like a man of action even without yet being sworn into the role. Can Carney complete the greatest political comeback in Canadian history? Ford Tough? Two weeks after winning his snap election call, Doug Ford has thrown himself into the tariff fight with the Trump White House, which resulted in a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity exports to the United States that were then paused when Ford secured a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. What comes from that meeting is still to be determined, but Ford's role as Captain Canada seems minted even as we're asking: Does Ford know what he's doing? Caton Expectations. Last week at Committee of the Whole, Guelph city council looked at an update to the Code of Conduct that will govern social media use, and there was a lot of confusion about what it was supposed to do. Also, there were some questions about the Accessibility Advisory Committee's desire for more autonomy and self-governance. We have the perfect person in mind for further discussion on these matters, and it's natural techspert, accessibility advocate and Ward 1 City Councillor Erin Caton! Welcome to episode 300! Today we are joined by Ian Millar and Amy Millar of Team Millar Brooke to discuss the value of experience in the sport. Ian Millar, known by the nickname "Captain Canada" is an icon in international show jumping. The most decorated equestrian in Canadian history, Ian's record-breaking career has set the bar for its numerous achievements and unparalleled longevity. Ian has appeared in more Olympic games than any other athlete in any sport, with a total of ten Olympic appearances. Winning his first medal in 2008 at age 61, Ian set a record for the oldest show jumper to stand on the podium at the Olympics. In 1996, he was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame with his longtime partner Big Ben, only the second horse to ever receive the honor. Both Ian and Big Ben have since been inducted into the Jump Canada Hall of Fame. Ian has earned nine medals (including two individual Golds) in nine Pan American Games, more than any other show jumper in history. Ian's daughter Amy Millar made her Olympic debut August of 2016 in Rio and currently holds twenty-five Grand Prix career wins to date. Following her father's footsteps into the jumper divisions and finding her own niche, Amy Millar was born into the sport, but hard work and raw talent has propelled her to the top level. In 2017, Amy was crowned the Canadian Show Jumping Champion at the Royal Winter Fair and throughout 2018 and 2019 Amy has collected numerous Grand Prix podium finishes and has continued to represent Canada in Nations Cup competition.

Captain Canada joins Cam and Andy on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast. What a career Ryan Smyth had, an Edmonton Oilers All-Star who transitioned into a Canadian Icon after appearing in seven consecutive World Championships. This is in addition to representing his country in the World Junior Championships, the World Cup, and twice in the Olympics. He even played in the Spengler Cup. How much does Smyth love the game of Hockey? After playing over 1200 NHL games he played Senior hockey which led to a visit to the hospital after being taken down by an elbow to the head. What does he think of the guy who took him out? While that proved to not be a very good idea, it's hard to criticize the rest of his career. During his prime he was considered among the top power forwards in the game and the face of the Oilers franchise. Smyth is now living his best life in Nashville, Tennessee of all places. Living on eight acres, he and his wife have four kids and are loving retirement life. So much to get into with Ryan Smyth, from almost becoming a Detroit Red Wing, his relationship with Mike Babcock, to why he was so emotionally attached to the city of Edmonton.
