When it comes to biting satire and outrageous humour, Tropic Thunder remains a standout in the annals of Hollywood comedies. Released in 2008, this film, directed by Ben Stiller, is a unique blend of action, absurdity, and razor-sharp commentary on the entertainment industry itself. In this Tropic Thunder Movie Review, we dive deep into the film's multilayered humour, its over-the-top performances, and the controversies that have kept it relevant long after its initial release.Plot Breakdown and SetupTropic Thunder follows the chaotic production of a Vietnam War film that spirals out of control when its pampered, clueless actors are dropped into the jungle for some “method” filmmaking. What starts as a fictional movie quickly devolves into real-life danger, though the cast has no idea they are no longer pretending. The plot is as meta as it gets—a movie about making a movie, where the line between fiction and reality is hilariously blurred.Ben Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, a fading action star desperately seeking credibility by taking on a “serious” role in a war drama. His co-stars include Kirk Lazarus (played by Robert Downey Jr.), a multiple Oscar-winning actor who undergoes a controversial pigment alteration surgery to play a Black soldier, and Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), a drug-addicted comedian known for his gross-out humour. Alongside them are Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel), the earnest newbie, and Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), a rapper-turned-actor trying to maintain his street cred. As the film's director loses control, the actors must survive real threats in the jungle, thinking it's all part of the shoot.A Satirical Punch to Hollywood's EgoAt its core, Tropic Thunder is an unflinching satire of Hollywood excess, egotism, and the absurd lengths actors go to in search of acclaim. The film skewers method acting, self-important stars, and the exploitative nature of the movie business. Ben Stiller, who not only stars but directs, doesn't shy away from poking fun at the very industry that made him famous.Stiller's Tugg Speedman embodies the desperation of actors clinging to their fading stardom. His previous attempts to earn respect as a serious actor—most notably in the disastrous Simple Jack, where he plays a mentally disabled man—are a clear jab at how Hollywood sometimes exploits sensitive topics for awards. The film pulls no punches in exposing the cynical calculation behind some “prestige” performances.Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Kirk Lazarus, a method actor who famously “doesn't break character until the DVD commentary,” takes method acting to absurd extremes. The decision for Lazarus to undergo a skin pigmentation procedure to play a Black character is undeniably provocative, pushing the boundaries of satire in ways that sparked debate even upon the film's release. The character is a vehicle for Tropic Thunder to critique the pretentiousness of actors who go to unhealthy or inappropriate lengths to inhabit their roles—without excusing the controversial nature of Lazarus's arc.Meanwhile, Jack Black's Jeff Portnoy represents a different Hollywood trope: the comedic actor known for lowbrow, bodily-function-driven humour who secretly longs for artistic respect. Black leans into this portrayal with reckless abandon, turning Portnoy into a parody of a certain kind of comedian trapped by his own public persona. The Performances: A Career High for Downey Jr.Though the entire cast delivers hilarious performances, Robert Downey Jr. steals the show with his portrayal of Kirk Lazarus. His commitment to the role is complete, both playing up the absurdity of Lazarus's method acting and delivering an authentic, sharp commentary on Hollywood's more troubling habits. Downey Jr.'s performance walks a very fine line—one that could have easily veered into offensive territory. However, by using the character to critique the very behaviour he is embodying, the role becomes an effective, albeit a controversial, form of satire. His role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, cementing it as one of the most memorable comedic performances of the 2000s.Ben Stiller's turn as the washed-up action star is also noteworthy, mainly because his character serves as the audience's guide through the absurdity of the film's events. Stiller's deadpan delivery and earnest attempts at drama make Tugg Speedman's cluelessness all the more entertaining.Jack Black, as Jeff Portnoy, veers into more chaotic, physical comedy, adding a layer of absurd humour to the group's dynamic. His struggles with drug addiction while lost in the jungle add a layer of vulnerability to the otherwise outlandish character.Controversy and Cultural ImpactTropic Thunder courted its fair share of controversy upon release, particularly for its portrayal of Kirk Lazarus and its use of blackface as a satirical device. Robert Downey Jr. defended the role as an exploration of actors' ethical boundaries, and the film itself uses Lazarus's storyline to highlight the ridiculous lengths some performers will go for their craft. Still, the role continues to prompt discussions on what constitutes effective satire versus offensive content.Additionally, the film's subplot involving Tugg Speedman's role in Simple Jack—a blatant parody of Hollywood's handling of disability—also generated pushback from advocacy groups. These controversies, however, are key to understanding the film's legacy. Tropic Thunder was always intended to provoke, challenge, and make audiences uncomfortable as they laugh.Despite (or perhaps because of) these controversies, Tropic Thunder remains a touchstone in discussions about satire, comedy, and filmmakers' responsibilities when dealing with sensitive topics. Its willingness to push boundaries and make audiences question the ethics of the film industry itself is part of what keeps it relevant more than 15 years later.Cinematic Elements: More than Just ComedyOn the technical side, Tropic Thunder is surprisingly well-made for what is primarily a comedy. John Toll's cinematography brings an epic, blockbuster feel to the film, particularly in the action sequences that are staged with the same level of intensity as a serious war movie. Theodore Shapiro's score also works in tandem with the action, providing a dramatic undertone that heightens the film's satirical edge. The jungle setting, explosive battles, and grandiose direction all emphasise how over-the-top Hollywood productions can become, underscoring the film's satire. While Tropic Thunder could have quickly been shot with a straightforward, low-budget comedy aesthetic, the decision to treat it like an actual war film makes the story's absurdity all the more pronounced.Legacy: A Satirical Time CapsuleIn many ways, Tropic Thunder serves as a time capsule of mid-2000s Hollywood. It captured a specific moment in the film industry when method acting, prestige pictures, and action blockbusters dominated the cultural conversation. The film remains controversial, but it's also widely regarded as one of the best satirical comedies of its time. Whether it skewers egotistical actors, lampoons Hollywood's excesses, or simply delivers absurd, laugh-out-loud moments, Tropic Thunder stands as a film that invites laughter and introspection in equal measure. As we explore Tropic Thunder's genius and provocations in this podcast episode, we ask: Does it still hold up? Is it a biting satire of Hollywood or an offens...
On the Saturday September 28, 2024 episode of The Richard Crouse Show we get to know Mike Downie, director of “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal,” the definitive four-part documentary series about the band who, as the programmers of TIFF noted earlier this year, “went on to make music that defined Canada to the world and, more importantly, Canada to Canadians.” The four-hour Amazon Prime docuseries combines never-before-seen archival footage with new interviews with the band, family, friends, and famous fans including Will Arnett, Dan Aykroyd, Jay Baruchel and Geddy Lee, to create a joyful and moving look at The Tragically Hip, their music and the personal tragedies that defined the band. It's the story of a band of brothers, produced and directed by Mike Downie, brother of the band's frontperson Gord Downie. Then, we meet Maisy Stella and Megan Park, the star and director respectively of “My Old Ass,” a wonderful coming-of-age story about a free-spirited teen whose birthday mushroom trip brings her face-to-face with her 39-year-old self, played by Aubrey Plaza, who delivers some choice advice and words of warning that transform her relationships with her family and friends. Finally, Divesh Subaskaran stops by. He's the star of “Life of Pi” currently on stage at the CAA Ed Mirvish theatre in Toronto. Based on the best-selling novel, this story of adventure and discovery is an epic journey about a young man who survives a disaster at sea and forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger. We'll find out what it is like to do this demanding show night after night and why his acting teacher at RADA—the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts—told him he should behave like a rockstar.

It's normal to expect weird shit out of Nicholas Cage but this Friday Failure is beyond weird. The Sorcerer's Apprentice from 2010 is by far one of the worst movies we have ever watched. Has anyone actually seen this? Were you able to sit through the horrific acting that is Jay Baruchel (sorry Jay but you are REALLY bad). We dare you to revisit it with us this week. DISCLAIMER This episode was originally recorded under the old podcast show name and contains "quacks" of swear words. Be kind...we have learned a lot since then.
In this "Giant Mess" movie lover and TV addict Neal Lynch gives his initial knee-jerk reactions to seeing Dune Part Two (spoiler: it's on the of best movies of all-time) in the theater, the scarily accurate yet ironic prediction from sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke that kicked off the BlackBerry movie on Hulu starring Glenn Howerton and Jay Baruchel, the final release from the failed DC Extended Universe -- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on HBO Max, and Apple TV's Foundation Season 2 featuring the beefcakiest stud Lee Pace. ABOUT "GIANT MESS": "Giant Mess" is a sloppy sports and entertainment talk show about New York Giants football, Mets baseball, movies, TV shows, funny stories and life lessons. It's hosted by a giant mess, The Real Cinch Neal Lynch. ABOUT NEAL LYNCH: I'm an Irish-Italian-American who graduated from a Catholic high school (but isn't Catholic), and a college known for producing doctors and lacrosse players, then became neither. Instead, I'm a former college quarterback & pitcher with a film and media studies degree who currently overthinks everything. This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris revisit the 2014 remake of Robocop, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary.Starring Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, 2014's Robocop sees the Detroit cop almost killed by a car bomb after he gets too close to taking down the local crime boss, Vallon (Patrick Garrow). Luckily (or maybe unlucky) for Alex, he's selected to be the first cyborg police officer for Omnicorp. They have robotic drones in war zones around the globe but are legally prohibited from deploying them on US soil. Omnicorp CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) believes Robocop can help turn the tide of public opinion and help him deploy robots in every major US city.Zach and Chris talk about some of the things this new version does well, including the horrific view of what's left of Murphy's body, the action sequences, and the complicated arc of Gary Oldman's Dr. Norton along with some of the things that pale in comparison to the original, like its self-serious tone and lack of hilarious satire, the PG-13 rating and the uncharismatic. You can watch Robocop on Max if you want to get refreshed on the remake.Next week we're talking about Darkman, which is coming to 4K for the first time on Tuesday, 2/20.We want to hear your comments and feedback. Final Draft's Write On Podcast sits down with Blackberry writers Matt Johnson and Matthew Miller to talk about how they wrote this epic story of the rise and fall of the world's first portable email machine. Johnson and Miller loosely adapted the script from Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff's book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry. The film Blackberry is a bio-pic dramedy that follows the fictional story of the Blackberry creator Mike Lazaridis, played by Jay Baruchel and his main investor played by Glenn Howerton. “Because we had the book, it was the blueprint for the movie. It has so many of the facts and details that we extrapolated and then sort of placed in the script," says Miller. The production of the movie was a bit like the push to get Blackberry into the marketplace - there was a lot of hustle. “The structure of the movie as it stands came from needing to reuse the same locations over, and over again,” says Johnson. We sat down to hear about this wild ride from true story to script to budgetary concerns and on-screen production. Click to hear more and listen to the podcast.
Do you remember that movie that Disney did back in the 40s with a bunch of classical music, and no words, and it was kinda spooky and ended with a big freaking demon on a mountaintop? Member the first part with Mickey Mouse and his blue hat making a bunch of mops go absolutely berserk?! EVER WANTED TO SEE A WHOLE MOVIE ABOUT THAT?! Well, this is kind of it. This week on The CineMEH Podcast! Josh and Ryan are back for another CAGE MATCH where we take on a modern, urban fantasy film staring Nic Cage and based on a five minute short from Disney's Fantasia. Welcome to The Sorcerer's Apprentice. A film more concerned with explaining why sorcerers wear the shoes they wear, than pacing itself correctly. Join your hosts as they debate how a movie can be both too long and too short at the same time, why inconsistent magic rules make for a poor magical movie, and, once again, why bad movies start with medieval flashbacks. This one has it all in this season's penultimate episode that might be the most apt mediocre film yet! You'll laugh (at the incompetence)! You'll cry (at the clunkiness)! You'll be awed (at just how it was that Bruckheimer thought it was okay to expand a short into a three hour epic)! Pop the popcorn and fill up your soda, it's time for The CineMeh Podcast! The Sorcerer's Apprentice was released in 2010 and stars Nic Cage, Alfred Molina, and Jay Baruchel. The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? "BlackBerry" had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its sharp writing, direction, and performances from Jay Baruchel and especially Glenn Howerton. Nominated for a Gotham Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance, Howerton's work has garnered some of the best notices of his career as the sociopathic, results-driven Canadian businessman and former chair and co-chief executive officer for BlackBerry, Jim Balsillie. Howerton was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us on the podcast about his work on the film, how it's different than what he's done before, where he would like to take his career following the success of this film, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to rent and own from IFC Films and is up for your consideration in all eligible categories this awards season, including Best Supporting Actor for Howerton! Jay Baruchel never intended to be a comedian. But there was a brief moment there in the mid-2000s when he made what he now describes as the “stupid” decision to try and become a movie star. In this episode, the Canadian actor talks about taking on his most dramatic role yet in the new film ‘BlackBerry' about the rise and fall of the Canadian predecessor to the iPhone. Baruchel also traces the story of how Judd Apatow plucked him from obscurity to star in the short-lived Fox sitcom ‘Undeclared,' setting off a string of roles in comedy hits like ‘Knocked Up,' ‘Tropic Thunder' and ‘This Is the End,' a movie he was convinced would be a total disaster—not just because of his very real beef with co-star Jonah Hill, both on screen and off—and ended up wildly exceeding his expectations.
