Showy Ovaries with Penny Ashton. A Menopause Podcast.

Send a textHello 2026! Lovely to be in you AND lovely to welcome today's podcast star Dr Erin Harrington, Senior Lecturer Above Bar at Canterbury University. An academic at Penny's alma mater (which apparently means nourishing mother...) Erin is one of Showy Ovaries' cleverest interviewees yet, keeping Penny on her toes following her quicksilver brain. Her specialist topics are horror, gynaehorror (horror regarding women's bodies), children's stories (of course!) and cultural activism. She has published a book called Women, Monstrosity and Horror Film, is a trustee of The Word Festival in Christchurch, and is an incredibly prolific and respected reviewer through her own blog; Flat City Field Notes.Penny popped around to her central whare to chat all things fleshy, where they delved into what it is to live with bi-polar disorder and the treatment that saved her life, getting an endometriosis diagnosis and why her holding a microphone could look pornographic. Oh and blood, guts, intestines and chainsaw massacres. Natch. Support the show

Some previous grant research revealed the importance of accounting for dehumanization in interreligious conflict, and this was confirmed by the work of the late neuroscientist Emile Bruneau who encouraged those working in peacemaking to account for elements like this. My work in monster theory also played a part in my understanding, and therefore I was pleased to find David Livingstone Smith account for this in his book Making Monsters: The Uncanny Power of Dehumanization (Harvard University Press, 2021).  In this podcast, Smith and I dive down into a specific element of dehumanization which he has called "demonizing dehumanization." What if the only people who can save you look more like monsters than the threats you fear? We dive into Claymore's bleak, beautiful world to explore how a secret Organization forges half-human warriors, why townsfolk call them silver-eyed witches, and what it really costs to wield Yoki without losing yourself. Along the way, we pull apart the show's stark palette and austere tone, showing how the lack of color is a feature—not a flaw—that keeps you on edge in a society stalked by shapeshifting Yoma.We walk through Claire's origin and the choice that sets her apart: taking Teresa's flesh makes her one‑fourth Yoma, granting a wider margin of control and a terrifying upper limit she can touch without fully Awakening. That thread weaves into a larger conversation about identity, restraint, and revenge, with Raki's presence anchoring Claire's humanity. We also unpack the mechanics behind Yoki and Awakening, why early experiments with male warriors failed more often, and how the series uses fear to police both saviors and civilians. If you've ever compared Claymore to The Witcher, you're not wrong—shared DNA runs through body-altering rites, social exile, and the moral math of becoming monstrous to slay monsters. Then we get honest about adaptation. The anime's infamous, anime‑original ending undercuts the looming threat of the Abyssal Ones and chops out critical journeys that the manga handles with patience and purpose. We lay out why the print story sings—better pacing, deeper stakes, true consequences—and why a modern, faithful reboot could thrive with today's appetite for dark fantasy. Whether you loved the show's brutal fights or bounced off its bleakness, there's a richer narrative waiting on the page.Hit play to hear our verdicts, our best watch‑or‑read roadmap, and where Claymore sits among demon‑slaying classics. University of Georgia professor, Rafiki Jenkins, joins Doc and Mike to discuss the origins of human monstrosity (can a human be monstrous?) and how horror fictions presents and complicates history and American culture. We hope you have a fortunate Friday the 13th!   Jerry Rafiki Jenkins is Assistant Director of the Institute for African American Studies at the University of Georgia. Rafiki holds a doctorate in Literature from the University of California, San Diego, and his research focuses on Black speculative fiction and film, with an emphasis on horror, and future human studies. Rafiki is the author of Anti-Blackness and Human Monstrosity in Black American Horror Fiction (Ohio State UP, 2024) and The Paradox of Blackness in African American Vampire Fiction (Ohio State UP, 2019), and he co-edited, with Martin Japtok, Human Contradictions in Octavia E. Rafiki has also authored several book chapters, and his peer-reviewed articles appear in Pacific Coast Philology, Screening Noir, African American Review, Journal of Children's Literature, and Science Fiction Studies.     About this podcast: MONSTERS! They haunt our days and chill our dreaming nights, to paraphrase Emily Dickinson. There's not a population on earth that does not have its own unique monster stories to tell to frighten, but also to instruct on the nature of good and evil, right and wrong. But what happens when monsters get out of control, when the monstrous imagination starts to bleed over into the real world? What are the effects of monsters on real people's real lives? This podcast examines the histories and mysteries of some of our favorite monsters to unlock their secrets and expose their influence on our lives.   About the hosts: Michael Chemers (MFA, PhD) is a Professor of Dramatic Literature in the Department of Theater Arts at UC Santa Cruz. Trevor is best known for his work as the Xenomorph in "Alien: Romulus", The Monstrosity in "Smile 2", a Wookie in The Mandalorian, and most recently the Chip (in demon form) in the 2025 Slamdance hit, "Portal to Hell"! I've become more and more familiar with Trevor's work and was thrilled to have him on the live WonderCon show.  I talked with Trevor about growing up in Texas and his early ambitions of being a paleontologist, what dinosaur he would want to play in Jurassic Park, his fascination with being a voice actor, how he got into creature acting, our mutual love for Doug Jones, getting cast as the Xenomorph, the crazy costume for The Monstrosity, playing demon Richard Kind in Portal to Hell, your Q&A, and more! A huge Thank You to Trevor Newlin for taking the time to make the drive to Anaheim to join me at WonderCon! Also, a huge thank you to everybody who came out to the show and asked questions. All of you had such great questions and it really made it a lot of fun! Make sure to follow Trevor on all of the links at www.onthemicpodcast.com so you can find out what creature he is playing next! Sarah Stang, editor, joins Jana Byars to talk about Monstrosity in Games and Play (Amsterdam UP, 2024). Monsters fascinate us. From ancient folklore to contemporary digital games, they are at the core of the stories we tell. They reflect our fears, deepest desires, and the monstrosity hidden within ourselves. Monsters hold a mirror to our contemporary society and reveal who we truly are.  This edited collection examines monsters and monstrosity in games and play. Monsters are a key feature of most games: we fight, kill, and eat them--and sometimes, we become them. However, monsters in games and play are not only entertaining but also a reflection of the monstrosity of our world. In this book, twenty-two scholars explore how themes such as mental health, colonialism, individualism, disability, gender, sexuality, racism, and exclusion are reflected in the monsters we interact with in games, play, and our daily lives both online and offline. Monstrosity in Games and Play is recommended to readers interested in the monstrous in contemporary game cultures and their surrounding societies. Learn more about your ad choices. Whitney Dirks joins Jana Byars to talk about her new book, Monstrosity, Bodies, and Knowledge in Early Modern England: Curiosity to See and Behold (Amsterdam University Press, 2024). In 1680, the poor cottager Mary Herring gave birth to conjoined twins. At two weeks of age, they were kidnapped to be shown for money, and their deaths shortly thereafter gave rise to a four-year legal battle over ownership and income. The Herring twins' microhistory weaves throughout this book, as the chapter structure alternates between the family's ordeal and the broader cultural context of how so-called 'monstrous births' (a contemporary term for deformed humans and animals) were discussed in cheap print, exhibited in London's pubs and coffeehouses, examined by the Royal Society, portrayed in visual culture, and litigated in London's legal courts. This book ties together social and medical history, Disability Studies, and Monster Studies to argue that people discussed unusual bodies in early modern England because they provided newsworthy entertainment, revealed the will of God, and demonstrated the internal workings of Nature. Sara Burdorff joins Jana Byars to talk about her new book, Maternity, Monstrosity and Heroic (Im)mortality from Homer to Shakespeare (Amsterdam University Press, 2025). This work uses an adaptation of monster theory to rethink the foundations of epic-heroic immortality. Rather than focusing on a specific monster or monsters, the author identifies the "belly-monstrous" as a crucial point of intersection between mothers and warriors in traditional narratives of the Trojan War. Identifying the gestating/digesting belly as the center of the Iliadic world, this groundbreaking approach disrupts androcentric readings of the Iliadic warrior and his ethos, emphasizing the crucial role of female suffering in the generation and preservation of immortal legacy. The author reconsiders ancient Greek depictions of the Trojan War and its aftermath, including Homeric epic and the tragedies of Aeschylus and Euripides, and illuminates the cohesive patterning of Shakespeare's "mother-warrior" plays, which place inherited Iliadic-belly-monstrous motifs in conversation with cultural anxieties of late Elizabethan England. With meticulous scholarship and captivating analysis, Maternity, Monstrosity, and Heroic (Im)mortality from Homer to Shakespeare redefines the relationship between mothers and warriors in the Iliadic-heroic ideal, paving the way for new interpretations of war, grief, and immortal glory in a broad range of literary and cultural contexts. More recent performances include collaborations with Tuhran Terrell (keyboardist/Anita Baker), Jerome “Stixx” Davis (drummer/LaFace/Arista recording artist Tony Rich); singer Hunter Gerard (soap opera star/General Hospital); and, Louie Louie (WTG recording artist , chart topping hit “Lap of Luxury”). Rene was also involved with the modern musical Dreamscape; created and performed by Steve Reed, percussionist for fusion jazz legends – The Rippingtons As well recording with Grammy award winning writer Sleepy Brown writer of the hit by Outkast (I like the way U move) and multiple performance with Grammy award winning bassist for Latin pop star Mark Anthony Mel Brown and Christian Rapcore band Junkyard Prophet and a faction of The Fortunes(UK 70's group that had the hit (“Here comes that rainy day feelin' Again”) Taking time to record his first full-length release, Rene employed expertise from Troy Johnson, bass; and, the dynamic drumming of Todd Roberson; both backing up the likes of Michael Lee Firkins (Shrapnel records alumni), Stephen Pearcy (former frontman of Ratt); and their own instrumental powerhouse JRZ System. The result was a throttle-filled carpet ride sounding like a fusion between Stevie Wonder and Tony MacAlpine. His follow up project Rene called on more musical friends such as, Philip Bynoe (bassist/Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt, and Mark Boals), and Atma Anur (drummer/Greg Howe, Cacophony , Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker), Kelly Conlon (bassist Death, Monstrosity, Azure Emote) Funk legend guitarist Charlie Singleton(Cameo) and drummer/producer Paul Vowell(Radioactive Chickenheads, Green Jelly, Sleepy Brown of Outkast) along with appearances by long time comrades Troy Johnson(bassist JRZ System) among others. Also recorded with Belizian/Central American superstar Andy Palacio who passed away shortly after those sessions.
