In this episode of Bonfire Conversations, I sit down with composer and sound designer Mick Gordon for an in-depth conversation about his career, creative process, and approach to music.Mick Gordon is best known for his work on video games such as DOOM, DOOM Eternal, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, Prey, and Killer Instinct. His music for the DOOM franchise helped redefine how heavy music functions in interactive media and earned widespread industry recognition, including Best Music at The Game Awards 2016. His work has since influenced films, trailers, and games across the industry. In this conversation, Mick reflects on his childhood and early influences in Australia, the path that led him to composing, and key turning points in his career. He discusses his philosophy of “change the process, change the outcome,” perfectionism, working under pressure and deadlines, and how he approaches finding a distinct creative voice in an evolving industry. The discussion also touches on his recent work on Routine and the design decisions behind its soundscape. The episode concludes with Penny for Your Thoughts, a lighter segment exploring Mick's influences, favorites, and broader reflections on creativity.Bonfire Conversations is a podcast focused on the creative mind—how artists think, adapt, and evolve across disciplines.

Dickens' star is on the rise. Sketches by Boz is a success and he publishes The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist and more. Plus, he is a hit on both sides of the Atlantic with ‘Dickensmania' sweeping the United States. But there is tragedy at home.

"Particularly bright and joyous" [THOR] Forget about the silence you might think is suggested by the word "pantomime." British panto is a raucous, musical, holiday tradition that expects the audience to be as loud as possible, booing the villain and cheering the hero. It's usually a comic, theatrical retelling of a fairy tale — like Cinderella or Aladdin — with slapstick for the kids, cheeky innuendo for the adults, and a cast that includes a campy "Dame" (a man in an over-the-top dress). Now Holmes, Watson, and the world of 221B have been lovingly added to the panto tradition in Sherlock Holmes and the 12 Days of Christmas, playing through January 18, 2026, at England's Birmingham Rep. The show is also a genuine whodunnit: West End stars are being murdered in mid performance. Can Sherlock Holmes solve the case? It's all the work of our guests Humphrey Ker and David Reed, writers and stars whose love of the Victorian Age, history, and classic literature has infused almost twenty years of collaboration. You'll hear about their work creating radio plays for the BBC, stage shows for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and their adventures as two-thirds of the comedy troupe "The Penny Dreadfuls." You'll also learn how Sherlock Holmes and the 12 Days of Christmas came about, and how it came to inspire new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber — creators of some of the most enduring musicals in history. Then it's on to our review of Sherlockian society activities in the second half of January in "The Learned Societies" segment. The remarkable Madeline Quinones caps her series of Holmesian podcast reviews with her final report in "A Chance of Listening," with our thanks and admiration. And the Canonical Couplet quiz tests your Sherlock Holmes knowledge, with a prize from the IHOSE vaults for the winner. One of the early episodes that shaped Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev's worldview was the story of a serf huntsman named Andrey, who lived on the family estate of Spasskoye-Lutovinovo. Andrey was known for his exceptional hunting skills and deep knowledge of the surrounding forests. Turgenev often went hunting with him, engaged in conversation, and listened attentively to his stories about nature and rural life. One day, Turgenev's mother, Varvara Petrovna, learned that Andrey had taken the master's hunting rifle without permission. For this offense, she ordered him to be punished with corporal punishment, which was a common practice among landowners at the time. The young Turgenev was deeply troubled by such measures and insisted that humiliation and violence were unacceptable. He strongly opposed his mother's decision and declared that if the punishment were carried out, he would leave the estate. His protest had an effect. Varvara Petrovna canceled the punishment, and Andrey was soon granted his freedom. It is believed that episodes like this strengthened Turgenev's humanistic views, which would later be reflected in A Sportsman's Sketches, where the dignity and inner world of ordinary people became central themes.Telegram Channel - https://t.me/befluentinrussian

Ivan Turgenev was born in 1818 into a noble family on the estate of Spasskoye-Lutovinovo. His childhood passed among fields, forests, and a large country house. Turgenev's mother was a very strict woman and often treated the serfs harshly. Young Ivan saw this and felt upset. Because of this, he understood early that injustice and violence are wrong. Later, this became an important theme in his books.Turgenev received a good education. He studied at universities in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and then went to Berlin, where he studied philosophy and European culture. This made him a person with an open mind, interested in new ideas and the development of society.Turgenev first became well-known with his book A Sportsman's Sketches. This is a collection of stories about the life of peasants. In these stories he showed peasants as people with rich inner lives, thoughts, and feelings. Many readers saw serfs differently after this book. It is said that the book even influenced the decision to end serfdom in Russia.Later he wrote his major novels:Rudin — about a person who talks a lot but does little.Home of the Gentry (Nest of the Gentry) — about quiet and sad love.Fathers and Sons — about the conflict between the older and younger generations.Fathers and Sons caused many arguments. Some people said Turgenev was against the new generation; others said he supported it. But in reality, Turgenev simply wanted to understand both sides.Turgenev spent much of his life abroad, especially in France. The woman he loved, the singer Pauline Viardot, lived there. But even while living far away, he remained a Russian writer: he continued to write about Russia, its people, and its future.Ivan Turgenev died in France in 1883.Telegram Channel - https://t.me/befluentinrussian

Brian Thompson chats with Carl Richards — Certified Financial Planner™, creator of The New York Times “Sketch Guy” column, and bestselling author of “The Behavior Gap” and “The One-Page Financial Plan.” Carl's simple Sharpie sketches have transformed how millions of people think and talk about money. In his latest book, “Your Money: Reimagining Wealth in Simple Sketches”, he shares 101 drawings and essays designed to spark deeper conversations about money, values, and what matters most. In this conversation, Brian and Carl dive into the emotional side of money and debate whether money actually can buy happiness. Episode Highlights A good sketch can start a conversation. Carl said the impetus behind his new book is simple: we're not talking about money in the right way. Instead of focusing on financial “noise” like markets and TV pundits, he wanted to give people tools to have conversations that align money with their values. “Really good financial decisions happen when we make a little bit of meaning out of money,” Carl said. “We're getting clear about our purpose.” Money = feelings. Carl's first sketch in the book, and arguably the most powerful, is simply, “Money = Feelings.” He emphasized that money evokes an emotional response, whether that's anxiety, freedom, or joy. “We're not talking about spreadsheets and calculators,” Carl said. Order can be powerful. Bringing order to chaos can provide a sense of control when life feels overwhelming. Whether it's finally sorting through a pile of unopened mail or cleaning the garage, creating a sense of order can help ease anxiety and overwhelm. “There are so many global things going on that are out of our control,” Carl said. “If you feel nervous or scared, go clean the garage, do the dishes, do something that gives you a sense of control and order.” Money can buy happiness — if you spend it right. Can money buy happiness? Carl believes the answer is yes — if you know how to spend it. Money spent on meaningful experiences with loved ones or exerting more freedom over your time is money well spent. “Nobody wants more money,” he said. “They want what they think money will give them, and if you don't do the work to figure out the difference, then more money won't buy you happiness.” Resources + Links Carl's newest book: “Your Money: Reimagining Wealth in Simple Sketches” Bulk order “Your Money: Reimagining Wealth in Simple Sketches” and save an additional 5% by using the code YourMoney5 at checkout Carl's other books: The Behavior Gap and The One-Page Financial Plan Episode 40: Making Complex Ideas Simple with Carl Richards Carl's podcast: Behavior Gap Radio The Society of Advice online community of financial planners Carl's New York Times column Follow Carl Richards Online: Website, Instagram, X, LinkedIn Brian Thompson Financial: Website, Newsletter, Podcast Follow Brian Thompson Online: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Forbes About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and Certified Financial Planner® who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. It has been a hot minute since the last installment of a discography-series episode dropped, and I couldn't be happier than to share that I was able to convince Sammy Sanchez to join me for a breakdown of the King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard catalog.Sammy and I go all the way back to Two Thousand and Twenty-Two, when I met him for the first time after having his awesome father, Cesar, sit down with me to talk music and life.I've gotten to know Sammy via these (now five total) podcast conversations, and that lane of my life is richer for it.In our initial conversation, we talked LCD Soundsystem, Pink Floyd, and Tom Waits. Our second installment peeked into the Tom Waits discography. We did a Beck episode, and a Radiohead episode, and now...it's Kay Gee & the Elle Double-you, baby! How does one attempt to describe King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard? Well...they're an Australian rock band that has broken the mold of prolific studio recordings. In short, they formed in 2010, and have dropped 30 records in that span, and no, there are no typos in this sentence.Thirty records!Beyond that, you just have to see for yourself. They can get heavy. They sometimes journey. And -- from time to time -- they jam. Here's the collection (to the best of our knowledge):Willoughby's Beach (2011)12 Bar Bruise (2012)Eyes Like the Sky (2013)Float Along -- Fill Your Lungs (2013)Oddments (2014)I'm in Your Mind Fuzz (2014)Quarters! (2015)Papier Mache Dream Balloon (2015)Nonagon Infinity (2016)Flying Microtonal Banana (2017)Murder of the Universe (2017)Sketches of Brunswick East (2017)Polygondwanaland (2017)Gumboot Soup (2017)Fishing for Fishies (2019)Infest the Rats' Nest (2019)Chunky Shrapnel (2020)K.G. (2020)L.W. (2021)Butterfly 3000 (2021)Butterfly 3001 (2022)Ominium Gatherum (2022)Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, and Lava (2022)Made in Timeland (2022)Laminated Denim (2022)Changes (2022)Petro Dragonic Apocalypse (2023)The Silver Cord (2023)Flight b741 (2024)Phantom Island (2025)And there you have it. And in case you were curious, yes, that was exhausting to type and italicize. So, yes, I can imagine how you totally didn't read it at all.Regardless, Sammy and I motored through the thing and did so (in my estimation) with some sense of efficiency; we didn't dawdle and we certainly didn't speed.Needless, to say, I hope there's a way for some folks to find this conversation enjoyable, be they K.G. & the L.W. fans or not. It was certainly fun and rewarding to do it.Many thanks to Sammy for his knowledge and his energy, and thank you to all of you that support the show.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained in this episode (or any other, for that matter).
