Christian Aid Week starts today, and on the programme we're joined by Louise Whitelegg - the Island's Christian Aid go-to girl, and Nick Georgiadis, who is Director of fundraising and supporter engagement based at Christian Aid HQ. Together they'll explain what the generosity of the people of the Isle of Man has already achieved in the world's poorest country - Burundi - and tell us what more can be achieved to give dignity and security to a nation in the grip of extreme poverty. If you want to know more, or to get involved during Christian Aid Week, go to Facebook - search for Christian Aid Isle of Man - or ring or text Louise on 07624 474275 And a few words from Ukranian-born Katarina, now living with a host family and building a life in the UK, remind us that Eurovision is in Liverpool only because war in Ukraine still rages, still takes lives, and still separates families. There's music too - and another packed notice board. Items for the notice board can be emailed to me - judithley@manxradio.com

Janet Zirugo and Jessica Mwedzi struggle to put food on their families' tables in an area of Zimbabwe vulnerable to drought. ‘Women are at the mercy of climate change and hunger', Jessica says. Janet, Jessica, and the dry earth itself cannot be well if we are not well. And we are not well in this unequal world where the land, its creatures and its peoples are exploited and suffer for the gain of a few. But all shall be well and all will be well in this world when we live in it conscious it is our common home, shared together with God. CHRISTIAN AID WEEK starts on 15 May and this week Louise Whitelegg - our local representative for the charity on the Isle of Man - joins us, not just with information about the last campaign, or even with news about the new appeal (although all that information IS there!) but Louise uses her own thoughts, Bible readings and prayers to put this year's appeal into its proper context. If you would like to get involved in this year's Christian Aid Week campaign, search for Christian Aid IOM on Facebook, or ring or text Louise Whitelegg on 07624 474275 GREATER HEIGHTS is the vitally important appeal launched by The Leprosy Mission, to re-build their hospital and research laboratory in Nepal. The present building is unfit for purpose and will not pass the upcoming Nepali Government inspection. Without this laboratory, the chance to end leprosy in our lifetime will be lost forever. Paul Moores, the Leprosy Mission representative who supports the Leprosy Mission Isle of Man, joins us today to share the call for us all to reach greater heights. The Leprosy Mission Isle of Man are active on Facebook - search for their page and Elly Duchars, Christine Sugden and the team would love to hear from you! On VE Day 75 years ago the bells of churches and cathedrals across the country were rung in celebration. Anniversary events will be very different this year as many of them have been cancelled as people adhere to rules that prohibit mass gatherings. Using archive and contemporary recordings from some who were there in May 1945 we remember the moment when the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces ended World War II in Europe. The charity Christian Aid has announced that they are projecting an annual loss of £6 million due to a fall in income because of Covid-19. They plan to furlough 20% of their staff and reduce the pay of everyone else. The cuts come as they launch their major annual fundraiser, Christian Aid Week. The charity's CEO Amanda Khozi Mukwashi debates the funding crisis facing charities that focus on international projects with Christine Allen, Director of the Catholic charity CAFOD. The Archbishop of Canterbury led the first virtual assembly for the online school, Oak National Academy this week. Another project has embraced technology to help keep school choirs performing. The Catholic Diocese of Leeds has launched daily online singing sessions for thousands of children who would usually be singing in school. Co-ordinator Tom Leech explains why music is an important part of home schooling for children in some of the most deprived areas of West Yorkshire. Ramadan is an important part of the religious calendar for muslims both spiritually and socially. Remona Aly reports on how families, friends and scholars are ensuring they keep traditions and customs associated with the Holy month alive. Song link The song at the end of the sermon is 'The Song of Kingdom Come' for Christian Aid Week 2018. Bible readings Isaiah 11:1-9 (NIV) The Branch From Jesse 11 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord— 3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. 6 The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. 7 The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8 The infant will play near the cobra's den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper's nest. 9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Mark 4:30-34 (NIV) The Parable of the Mustard Seed 30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” 33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
An exhibition which combines art and history to examine the legacy of war has just opened in Lichfield Cathedral. Entitled Consequence of War, it features works by Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland as well as more modern installations by the cathedral's artist in residence. Bob Walker went to Lichfield to meet those behind the project. Historian Francis Young talks about his new book: "Edmund - In Search of England's Lost King" Caroline Farrow talks to Edward about the support she has been giving to the parents of Alfie Evans. Whilst Professor Dominic Wilkinson and Professor Raanan Gillon discuss the moral dilemma of families and doctors face. A Turkish court has ruled to keep an American Christian pastor in custody, after his trial opened in a case that has raised tensions between Turkey and the United States. Dorian Jones tells us about the case and political fallout it's causing between the two countries. Christian Aid Week, the charity's biggest fundraiser focuses on Haiti this year. Prospery Raymond, Christian Aid's Haiti country manager is meeting supporters and speaking at churches. It's the first time he's been in the UK since the Oxfam charity workers scandal. He speaks to Edward about how this has affected their work on the ground in Haiti. Ramadan starts in a few weeks (15th May) and already preparations are underway for the 30 days of fasting and feasting. A new report out this week says the period of Ramadan is not just an important spiritual time for British Muslims but businesses too. Edward speaks to Shelina Janmohamed about the commercialisation of Ramadan. Producers: Amanda Hancox Louise Clarke-Rowbotham.

‘We can now live together safely and this brings my children courage and hope. This is so important to us so that we can now begin to forget.’ In this podcast we hear the story of Anoon Aleu, who returned to South Sudan to build a better life for her family and to rebuild her country following independence in 2011. She feared for her children’s safety and wanted a life of freedom for them in their homeland. Anoon and her husband, Madut, have built a new home, with a cash grant received from Christian Aid partner HARD. Anoon sees this new house as a symbol of hope bringing together her family safely under one roof. Christian Aid's partners in South Sudan are working with families like Anoon's to provide long term development solutions, whilst also responding to the current escalation in violence and the crisis facing many of those displaced from their homes. #caweek #conflict #southsudan #development #emergency
In the 1980s the Ba’ath regime, led by the then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, launched a genocidal campaign against the country’s Kurdish people. Thousands of Iraqi Kurds were killed in chemical attacks and whole villages destroyed. Today, while many communities have rebuilt their homes and villages, poverty in rural northern Iraq is still prevalent. In this podcast, former communications officer, Antoinette Powell, shares her reflections on visiting a village in northern Iraq where Christian Aid partner REACH works to support a community whose lives were destroyed by conflict and ensuing poverty. #caweek #conflict #peace

Dr Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, became Chair of Christian Aid’s Board of Trustees on May 1 with a plea to Christians to become agents of social justice. Having stepped down from his former job as Archbishop in December, Dr Williams said he was pleased to still be working with and for people living in poverty around the world. ‘In the last few years as Archbishop of Canterbury I became more and more aware of the priority of development and aid issues worldwide,’ he said. ‘I wondered before I stepped down from office how best to carry on with the work that had really excited me and engaged me. So when the suggestion came to chair Christian Aid I was really delighted.' Dr Williams, who is also Master of Magdalene College Cambridge, begins as Chair less than two weeks before the start of Christian Aid Week which kicks off on May 12.
