As we begin a series on the Fruit of the Spirit, Stacy, Alisha, Annie, and Lauren share our thoughts on love, joy, and peace and how these fruits are being manifested in our own lives. Some resources discussed: CCC 1832 The fruits the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. She has been in the tea room business for the last 20 years, and her original tea room in San Francisco was the oldest in the city. Muna has a unique style of tea room that has been described as quirky and whimsical, blending the tradition of tea service with an eclectic and playful charm. She felt that Ashland was the perfect place to bring this concept of tea room to life, and she's been living here semi-permanently since early 2021. Muna also loves the vibrant food scene here, and some of her favorite places in Ashland include Websters, Vida bakery, and the Oregon Cabaret Theater. It only takes a few seconds on Hanaa Elmi's Twitter timeline for even the most oblivious observer like myself to know that what she is doing is magical. One post from February details several images of student contributions from reflections on Stone Soup and other related readings - child's handwriting draws your eye to the center of each poster - We take care of each other by…We take care of water by…We take care of the Earth by… - student drawings and reflections surrounding those prompts create the shared understanding - Hanaa also captures “Our Ideas” in the margins - have a spirit of ubuntu (I am because we are), she writes, Be like the Water Walkers, Love water!Another series of images shows her young students exploring questions like “What's the heart of the story? What do you think the author wants us to know in our minds & hearts as a reader?”, one student reply reads “Ms. I think the heart of the story is that anger is okay and normal. We just have to breathe.” Hanaa prompts students to explore the differences & similarities between justice & charity. She quotes from one of the dozens of books her students use, “What are words really? Are they just random letters arranged in different ways? Or do they have magical powers that can inspire and amaze?” A student uses a number string to double 40. Students with clipboards find and sort animals on a number line by their height. They write, draw, & reflect in dream journals. I could go on and on and on… In every post, it's so obvious that students are deeply engaged & invested in the world & with each other. Community, love, joy, and learning are self-evident in the work she does with kids.GuestsHanaa Elmi is an elementary teacher in Windsor-Essex County. She is a graduate of the University of Windsor who roots her work in community: creating thriving spaces that humanize students. Another Empire Podcast episode, another bumper selection of guests this week, as Chris Hewitt sits down (in person) with Ian McShane, star of John Wick Chapter 4, and they chat about hotels, Lovejoy, McShane's start in acting, and (of course) Columbo. (Note: this interview was conducted before the news broke of the death of McShane's John Wick co-star, Lance Reddick) Chris also has a fantastic chat with John Boyega, star of Breaking, which is released on PVOD on Monday (March 27th), in which they talk about the film's social conscience, how Boyega navigated his career post-Attack The Block and Star Wars, and how he celebrates his birthdays. And then there's a clash of the Alexes, as our Mr Godfrey chats with Infinity Pool star Alexander Skarsgard about his crazy and intense new movie. Be warned: there's talk galore of dog collars and giant penises. The usual. Then, in the podbooth, Helen O'Hara hosts and is joined by James Dyer and Sophie Butcher for a fun episode in which they discuss unusual movie murder weapons, John Williams, the week's movie news, and review the likes of John Wick Chapter 4, The Five Devils, A Good Person, and Infinity Pool. Enjoy!
Bestselling author Karen White is releasing “The House on Prytania Street,” the second novel in her Royal Street spin-off series, on May 9. The book follows a strong heroine in New Orleans as she tries to restart her life, with a plot involving a thriller ghost mystery and romance. White aims to create character-driven stories about Southern women with “grit” and explores themes of survival and family. White has planned the series to allow readers to pick up any book out of chronological order and dive into the plot blindly. White will hold a book signing event in Woodstock, Georgia, on May 9.Top of Form Edward "Jay" Lionel Ball, a Woodstock man, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for multiple drug charges including distributing methamphetamine and manufacturing heroin. Ball was found guilty by a Cherokee County jury and sentenced by Superior Court Judge David Cannon Jr. as a recidivist, meaning he will serve the entire prison portion of his sentence without parole eligibility. The charges stem from a Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad investigation initiated in response to a tip about a man named Reginald Jerome Foster selling methamphetamine in Cherokee County. During the investigation, agents observed Ball supplying Foster with methamphetamine and heroin. Law enforcement later executed a search warrant and discovered nearly a pound of heroin in Ball's rented house, along with methamphetamine, scales, and baggies used for distribution, and handguns and ammunition. Ball's co-defendants, Reginald Jerome Foster and Katie Marissa Zepeta, were also charged and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate have passed two bills that would dissolve the current Cherokee County board of elections, replacing it with a new board appointed under a new process. If signed into law, most elections board members would be appointed by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners. Currently, the local Republican and Democratic parties appoint two members each, and the chair is chosen by the other four members of the elections board. The passing of the bills comes after a lawsuit questioning the current system's “constitutionality." Lawmakers believe that the bill should not affect voters when going to the polls to cast a vote. One month after Creekview parted ways with longtime boys basketball coach Casey Gramling, the school found its new coach in Denmark's Tyler Whitlock. Whitlock has 16 years of coaching experience, most recently with Denmark in Alpharetta, and has five state playoff appearances since 2019. He added region championships in 2019 and 2020, with a 96-50 record over the last five seasons since starting the Danes' program. Whitlock led Denmark to the Class AAAAAAA playoffs this past season with a 16-12 overall record and a 7-3 mark in Region 6AAAAAAA. The Danes fell 54-50 to Osborne in the first round. Creekview and Denmark met once in 2022-23, with the Grizzlies winning 55-49. The Danes prided themselves on defense and physicality during Whitlock's time as coach, a mentality he plans to instill at Creekview. The Canton City Council has denied a request for a townhome neighborhood at Prominence Point Parkway The Georgia Department of Education has awarded $22,307 to eight Cherokee County Schools through its Opportunity Grants program, which seeks to expand learning options and opportunities for students. The grants, funded by federal stimulus funds under the American Rescue Plan, total $1,820,804 and will support fine arts, health and physical education, and world language programs, among others. Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods said that these grants ensure students have access to educational opportunities that prepare them for life and keep them engaged in school. Five Cherokee County basketball players earned all-metro honors from the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Friday. River Ridge's Mataya Gayle topped the list as the Girls Metro Player of the Year after leading the Knights to the Class AAAAAA state championship. Gayle averaged 17.3 points, 5.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. Gayle, who scored 25 points in River Ridge's 68-50 win over Lovejoy in the state title game, is committed to play in the Ivy League at Penn next season. Cherokee's Toni Warren, Sequoyah's Elle Blatchford and Woodstock's Karson Martin were honorable mentions. Warren had a great 2022-23 season, taking the leap to the Warriors' lead threat on offense and committing to Wofford. She scored 41 points in Cherokee's 90-67 first-round playoff win over West Forsyth, breaking the single-game team record for points scored. Blatchford led Sequoyah to another Class AAAAAA state playoff appearance, pacing the offense at 17.7 points per game, along with 4.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists. She scored 25 points against Douglas County in the first round of the playoffs and followed with 17 points in a second-round win over North Forsyth. On the boys side, Etowah's Brandon Rechsteiner and Cherokee's Tayden Owens earned honorable mention nods. Rechsteiner, a Virginia Tech commit, led Etowah to the Class AAAAAA semifinals after hitting a late free-throw to beat St. Pius X and second-team all-metro honoree Spencer Elliott. He finished that game with 21 points and scored 15 points in a 56-53 semifinal loss to Alexander. Owens was a vital part of Cherokee's playoff run, which included the Warriors making the state championship game for the first time since 1982. He finished with 10 points and a go-ahead 3-pointer in a quarterfinal win over Carrollton. And now, as we get closer to the start of the 2023 Masters, Times-Journal Incorporated sports editor John Bednarowski joins the show to take us on a tour of Augusta National presented by Ingles. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - - The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. The River Ridge girls basketball team got its revenge on the ultimate stage, winning the Class AAAAAA state championship 68-50 over Lovejoy on Friday night at the Macon Coliseum. It is the first team state championship for River Ridge in any sport, and the Knights are the first girls basketball champion from Cherokee County since Etowah in 2005. River Ridge played with a chip on its shoulders, going up against a Lovejoy team that knocked the Knights out in the quarterfinals last year. This was the matchup the Knights wanted, and they pulled away late for the history-making 18-point win. Mataya Gayle took over in her final opportunity at River Ridge, scoring a game-high 25 points, surpassing 2,000 points for her career, while picking up nine rebounds and five assists. Behind Gayle, two sophomores had major contributions. Kayla Cleaveland scored 15 points despite fouling out in the fourth quarter, while Sophia Pearl finished with 11 points and five steals. River Ridge limited Lovejoy's talented guard duo of Bryanna Preston and La'nya Foster to 29 combined points. Foster's 16 points led the way, while Preston was forced to the bench after picking up her fourth foul with 2:30 left in the first half. Cherokee's run came to an end Saturday night, with the Warriors falling 78-58 to Wheeler in the Class AAAAAAA state championship game in Macon. It was nothing like the last time these two teams met. Cherokee was within striking distance for much of the game and trailed by just nine points in the third quarter. Wheeler's size and athleticism ultimately helped it pull away late, but the Warriors were anything but an easy out. Saturday marked the Warriors' first trip to the state title game since 1982, behind the late Tony Ingle, the future coach at Kennesaw State and a Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame honoree. Wheeler's win gave the program its ninth state championship all-time and third in the last four seasons. It was the fourth time Cherokee had seen Wheeler during the 2022-23 season, and after falling 94-41 in the Region 5AAAAAAA championship, the Warriors played like they had something to prove. Saturday marked the end of just Coach Joe Veihman's second season at Cherokee since taking over for longtime coach Roger Kvam. He led the Warriors to a 41-17 record, and now, a Class AAAAAAA runner-up trophy. A former Holly Springs educator has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to child sexual abuse during his time as a teacher at a private school. Robert Vandel, 65, of Canton was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison followed by 12 years on probation after pleading guilty to child sexual abuse crimes while he was teaching science at Lyndon Academy in Holly Springs. This sentence will run concurrently with a 10-year prison sentence Vandel is serving in Fulton County. Vandel pled guilty to his Fulton County charges in May 2022, admitting to rape, aggravated child molestation, false imprisonment, and child molestation while he was a science teacher at Fulton Academy of Science and Technology Charter School in Roswell. He was sentenced to 10 years to serve in prison followed by life on probation with sex offender special conditions. In September 2021, Vandel was arrested at Lyndon Academy by Roswell Police on charges that he sexually assaulted one of his students at Fulton Academy of Science and Technology Charter School. He was charged in Roswell with rape, aggravated assault with intent to rape a child under 14, aggravated child molestation, sexual assault by persons in supervisory authority, enticing a child for indecent purposes, and false imprisonment of a child under 14. After his arrest, Vandel was terminated from his teaching position. Since he was teaching in Holly Springs, Holly Springs Police Department initiated a separate investigation. A forensic interview showed that Vandel had been showing the child favoritism and giving her answers to test questions, before engaging in criminal acts, prosecutors said. In a negotiated guilty plea, Vandel admitted to intentionally making physical contact with intimate parts of the child's body, including pressing the front of his body against the child and smacking her buttocks with a ruler, prosecutors reported. In an impact statement, the victim said she has had sleepless nights, and they have felt betrayed and afraid, waiting for justice, prosecutors said. Lyndon Academy Headmaster Linda Murdock declined to comment on the civil case Friday due to the case being open. Records on the Georgia Professional Standards Commission website show that Vandel's teaching certification was revoked in October 2020. The commission had suspended his license in 2006. Last year, Murdock told WSB-TV that when Lyndon Academy hired Vandel two years earlier, the alleged sexual assault in Roswell had not yet been reported to authorities, and he passed a background check that included the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, social media checks, references, and recommendations. A 37-year-old woman from Woodstock has been arrested after authorities say she had a sexual relationship with a minor starting when he was 15 years old. Brittany Stetson is charged with child molestation, aggravated child molestion, sexual assault by teacher, according to her arrest warrant filed by Holly Springs Police Department. In the warrant, police say that in February 2021 Stetson initiated a sexual relationship with a boy who was 15 at the time, which continued for over a year. The woman is a former substitute teacher at Cherokee County schools, including the high school the teen attended. A representative of the Cherokee County School District said that the alleged sexual misconduct was not connected to Stetson's work as a substitute teacher, and she is no longer employed by the district. Stetson was arrested March 7 and booked into the Cherokee County jail. As of March 10, she remained there without bond, according to the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. A team of students from Etowah High School recently won first place in a statewide career skills competition for their public service announcement on mental health awareness. Juniors Samantha Durst, Temilola Oloruntoba, Katie Shay and Hannah Stack won the state HOSA Future Health Professionals competition for their video, the Cherokee County School District announced. They are part of their school's HOSA chapter, advised by Career Pathway healthcare science teachers Megan King and Amber Thayer. The PSA is currently available on You Tube. The team will compete nationally this summer at the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas. The Cherokee County school board and superintendent will recognize the team at an upcoming school board meeting. The River Ridge girls will play for the Class AAAAAA state championship. The Knights beat Langston Hughes 60-46 in Saturday night's semifinal at the University of West Georgia, bolstered by a lockdown performance on the defensive end and a 21-point game from Sophia Pearl. The win set River Ridge (26-5) up a rematch with Lovejoy in Friday's state championship at the Macon Coliseum. The Wildcats are the reigning champions and knocked off both River Ridge and Sequoyah in the playoffs last season. The game will tip off Friday afternoon at 5:30 PM and will air statewide on Georgia Public Broadcasting. GPB will provide television coverage for all state championship basketball games. For the first time in more than 40 years, the Cherokee boys basketball team will be playing for a state championship. The Warriors earned their first trip to the state finals since 1982 with a 63-60 overtime victory over Norcross in a Class AAAAAAA semifinal Saturday at the Georgia State Convocation Center. Cherokee (25-6) will play Region 5AAAAAAA rival Wheeler next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Macon Coliseum. The Warriors lost all three meetings with the Wildcats this season, including the region title game. It will be only the second state championship appearance for Cherokee, which lost to Campbell 68-67 in the 1982 Class AAAA title game. That team was led by the late Tony Ingle, the future coach at Kennesaw State and a Cherokee County Sports Hall of Famer. The Warriors will also try to become only the second boys GHSA state champion from Cherokee County, joining two-time champ Canton (1942, 1951). A man was rescued by firefighters Saturday after he was buried in a collapsed trench, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services reported. Cherokee County firefighters responded to a person trapped in a trench at about 1:30 p.m. on Hilltop Lane, off Riverlake Drive near Woodstock Saturday, according to the fire department, where they found a man "buried up to his neck." Firefighters called a trench rescue team from Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services for aid, and stabilized the area and removed dirt from around the man. First responders provided medical care and monitored the man while he was trapped until he could be removed. He was completely removed from the trench at about 3:45 p.m., according to the fire department. The man was treated and transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in stable condition. According to the fire department, the man was working on waterproofing a residential basement at the time of the incident. Police released the identification Monday of a Woodstock woman who was shot and killed Saturday at a home in Rome. A Rome Police Department report states that police arrived at 3 Shadowbrook Drive Saturday evening at 10:52 p.m. and 21-year-old Ellis Geoffery Marrs exited the residence. He told police "he had just shot someone," the report stated and police detained him before calling for backup and entering the residence. Once in the back yard, the responding officer stated a woman was attempting to perform life saving procedures on 51-year-old Iris Dail Edwards on the patio of the home. EMTs arrived on the scene and began to save Edwards. The responding officer found the firearm sitting on top of a grill with the magazine ejected. The officer then cleared a round from the gun and placed it in the trunk of their patrol vehicle. Edwards was pronounced dead on the scene by the Floyd County coroner's office. Her body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab awaiting an autopsy. Marrs was booked into the Floyd County Jail early Sunday. Marrs is charged with murder and as of early Monday he remained in the Floyd County Jail. Additional charges are pending the results of the continuing investigation. It was the second fatal shooting in four weeks in Rome. On Feb. 4, an Aragon man was killed outside a Park Homes apartment on Reservoir Street off Turner McCall Boulevard. Thomas Fountain will return to his Cherokee County roots to perform at the Canton Theatre at 7 p.m. on March 11. Fountain's performance in the Canton Theatre is arranged as a songwriter listening room to provide a more intimate listening experience for the audience. Each song's history and origin will get a deep-dive explanation at its performance. He also plans on playing unreleased music that he's written in recent months. Fountain said that he enjoys smaller venues where he is able to personalize the audience experience more. His local sponsors will also have merchant booths set up at the theater during his concert. Since the start of his musical career, Fountain has toured 10 states with performers like Chris Stapleton and Charlie Daniels. His most recent single, “Window Pane,” was released on Sept. 24, 2021. His music video for “It Don't Matter,” which was self-produced by Fountain and recorded in Cherokee County, was posted on YouTube on June 10, 2021. The singer described his music as something that sounds and feels more like 90s country than the modern direction of the genre. Growing up on musical influences like Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks, Fountain said that this style has always found its way back into his own compositions. Reserved seating is sold out but general admission tickets are still available for purchase through eventbrite for $20, not including taxes and fees. A private pre-show meet and greet with Fountain can be added on for an additional $20. A gift bag raffle ticket can be purchased for $10 as well as a full-sized signed event poster for $15. The Etowah boys' state title dreams came to an end Saturday night they it fell 56-53 to Alexander in a Class AAAAAA semifinal heartbreaker at the University of West Georgia. It was a tight game throughout, with Etowah (22-10) leading 10-7 after the first quarter. Alexander's size advantage was clear from the start, with 6-foot-8 forward Braedan Lue controlling the board. Lue scored the Cougars' first five points and finished the night with 18 points. Brandon Rechsteiner led Etowah with 15 points in his final high school game before heading to Virginia Tech. Dimitri Angelakos scored 13 points, followed by Aiden Weaver, who added 10 points. Alexander (27-5) will play Lee County for the state championship Friday at the Macon Coliseum. Lue shined in crunch time. Down four points with under 2 minutes to go, he single-handedly took the lead for the Cougars, scoring through contact and converting the three-point to make the score 54-53 in their favor. The Eagles were forced to foul, and after a few attempts to get into the bonus, Marvin McGhee IV broke free for a dunk. Out of a timeout, Rechsteiner got a near half-court shot up, but it rimmed out, and Etowah's run was over. It was an emotional ending for Dasinger and the Eagles, with the core of Rechsteiner, Etter, Clemmons, Kyle Tipper and others all seniors. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - - The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. When a blizzard struck western New York just before this past Christmas, pastors Al & Vivian Robinson were expecting the usual winter storm they're used to living in Buffalo. But when their town of Lovejoy lost power and neighbors started getting stranded, Vivian felt God calling her to open their church, the Spirit of Truth Urban Ministry, to help shelter, feed, and tend to the masses. With rescue efforts underway, and small miracles piling on top of one another, Al & Vivian experienced the love of God operating in a way so powerful, so moving, that it still brings them to tears when they reflect back on the 6 days they spent ministering to those in need. Quotes “Lovejoy lost all electrical power, but our church did not lose power. And I distinctively looked at my wife and I said, ‘Vivian, why would the Lord let us have electricity while everybody around us has no electricity?' And then within about 10 hours, we found out exactly why.” - Al Robinson “That first group of people that came here, the wailing and crying and shrilling, it was terrible. And that's when you began to understand the gravity of what is going on. This isn't a traditional Buffalo snowstorm, it's far more sinister than that.” - Al Robinson “It was just incredible how how the the spirit of the Lord in my wife was vibrating with the people around them where they just fell in sync with what she was doing, what what she was telling them to do, how she was orchestrating things, how she was making things up a structured at this church. It was wonderful.” - Al Robinson “Neighbors started bringing food out of their freezers so that we could feed the masses. It was literally a two loaves and five fish moment.” - Al Robinson “This is nothing new to us when it comes to serving God's people. And when people are in need, we go over and above to make sure we're taking care of individuals and we make the sacrifices that God has given us to go out there to get the people that needs our help. And that's what we have been designed to do.” - Vivian Robinson “God gave us this building. He gave us our lives. He gave us our health. He gave us our money. So in our opinion, everything we have already belongs to God. And so if God asks us to do something with what's His, we have absolutely no problem doing it. My life isn't my own.” - Al Robinson “It is a privilege I hold in high esteem that the Lord would pick His humble servants here in Lovejoy to be a part of an operation that saved the lives of 154 people during the most catastrophic storm known in the history of Buffalo, New York.” - Al Robinson “I was just grateful and thankful that God had used His humble people just to say yes to the call and that we had the opportunity to love on these people and to see each and every last one of these lives that God allowed us to save.” - Vivian Robinson LinksSpirit of Truth Urban Ministry La Verdad Cafe ________________________ Connect with Jesus Calling Instagram Facebook Twitter Pinterest YouTube Jesus Calling Website *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

For Thursday's opening, private security and Woodstock Police Department officers were present at the restaurant. Officers at #Whataburger said that traffic along Highway 92 continued to move smoothly throughout the day. Cones were placed near the entrance of the restaurant to allow drivers easy access to both Whataburger and Truett's Chick-fil-A next door. The restaurant opened at 11 a.m. Thursday and will remain open 24/7. The Whataburger drive-thru features double lanes and digital menu boards. Dining room access, ordering via the #Whataburger App and Whataburger.com, curbside and delivery will be available within the next few weeks. The #Woodstock location marks the second metro Atlanta opening, after Whataburger opened a restaurant in Kennesaw in November. Nine additional restaurants are planned for the Atlanta area in 2023, according to Whataburger. Planned locations include Cumming, Buford, Athens, Dawsonville and Snellville. Winning students were presented with certificates and prizes by #CCSD Instructional Technology Specialist Merry Hofmeister. The challenge, organized by CCSD's Office of Technology and Information Services, builds upon the school district's nationally recognized use of "Minecraft: Education Edition," the school version of the popular video game, to further engage students in learning. The Cherokee girls picked up their seventh straight win Tuesday night as it beat Region 5 seven A foe Wheeler 77-49. The Warriors' best stretch of the season continued as they have beaten teams by an average of 33.9 points since Dec. 30. Cherokee, which remained undefeated in the region and leads Walton and North Cobb in the standings, will search for a regular-season region sweep of each over the next two games. Continuing her stellar junior season, Toni Warren led Cherokee with 24 points against Wheeler. Alex Whitecliffe finished with 16 points, followed by Riley Simmons' 13 points and Elle Kenney's nine. Beyond Warren, multiple contributors have stepped up for Cherokee. Whitecliffe, Simmons, Lyla Griffith and many more have rapidly improved for a lineup riddled with young talent. Cherokee's schedule played a role in getting its young lineup ready for region play. It matched up with River Ridge, Lumpkin County and Lovejoy in the first three weeks of the season, and those three teams have a 51-12 combined record. The Sequoyah Regional Library System held a groundbreaking ceremony January 25 for the Hickory Flat Public Library expansion and renovation. The project includes renovating the existing 10,000 square foot building, which opened in 1993, and expanding it by an additional 7,800 square feet. Construction on the project will begin this month, with an expected completion date of about 12 months. When it reopens, the library will have more space for books and technology; larger areas for programs, meetings, collaboration and creation, and additional seating for study and quiet reading. Hollandsworth Construction is handling the construction. The total construction contract for the project is $6.7 million and is funded through Cherokee County's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Additional funding includes $2 million from a Capital Outlay Grant, administered by the Georgia Public Library Service. The building is closed to the public for the entirety of the construction. Those who have a Hickory Flat Library card can use it at any Sequoyah Regional Library System locations. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - - The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County.
