What if suffering is not a detour from life, but one of the places where meaning begins? In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Bill Sherman speaks with Dr. Suzan Song, MD, PhD, about instability, agency, and the human search for groundedness when life breaks open. Her work spans clinical care, global systems, conflict zones, and executive leadership. Her core question is simple and urgent: how do people move through suffering without losing themselves? Dr. Song shares the deeply personal origin of her work. After losing her father to violence as a teenager, she pushed forward through achievement, education, and service. Years later, while working with former child soldiers in Burundi, she found herself in danger and saw the connection between her past and her work. That moment helped her understand the deeper spark behind her mission. Her book, Why We Suffer, grew out of that mission. It is not a promise that life can be made painless. It is a practical look at how people can navigate hardship through narrative, ritual, purpose, connection, and agency. Dr. Song challenges the idea that healing is only individual. Across cultures, she has seen that people heal in relationship. The conversation also explores how instability shows up in leadership. CEOs, executive directors, governments, and communities are all facing rapid change. Funding shifts. Policy changes. War. Burnout. Cognitive fatigue. Dr. Song argues that the antidote to despair is not happiness. It is agency. Bill and Dr. Song discuss how thought leadership can be rooted in service, not ego. For Dr. Song, the work is not about claiming a label. It is about making ideas useful. It is about helping people, organizations, and systems respond to suffering with clarity, humility, and care. This episode is a powerful conversation for leaders, authors, speakers, consultants, and anyone trying to turn hard-earned experience into work that helps others. It asks us to look honestly at suffering. Then it asks an even more important question: what can we do with it? Three Key Takeaways: • Agency is the antidote to despair. When people face instability, the goal is not to force happiness. It is to find small, meaningful actions that restore a sense of control. • Suffering is both personal and collective. Hardship affects individuals, organizations, and communities. Healing often happens through connection, belonging, and shared support. • Resilience is more than pushing through. Real resilience comes from narrative, ritual, purpose, and relationships that help people make meaning and stay grounded during uncertainty. If this episode helped you think differently about instability and agency, listen to Episode 107 with David Komlos. That conversation explores how leaders tackle truly complex problems. You'll learn how to bring the right people and perspectives together, make better decisions, and move forward when there are no simple answers. It's a strong companion episode for anyone leading through uncertainty.

The practice of healthcare is inherently powerful, and our patients are vulnerable to our power. Though power can be abused, the righteous use of power, for the benefit of the vulnerable, is profoundly Christlike. We will explore the lessons of power which help us understand our roles, including the fundamental nature of professionalism and key kingdom strategies of healthcare missions.
In this episode of The Long Form Podcast, Dr. Adonia Ayebare discusses the hidden diplomacy behind the Uganda–Rwanda fallout, regional security in eastern Congo, and the future of Africa in an increasingly unstable global order. As Uganda's Ambassador to the United Nations and a longtime advisor to Yoweri Museveni, Dr. Ayebare offers a rare behind-the-scenes perspective on how power actually works in East Africa and at the UN.The conversation explores the role of Muhoozi Kainerugaba in repairing Uganda–Rwanda relations, the operations of the Uganda People's Defence Force in eastern Congo, the unresolved conflicts in Burundi and the Great Lakes region, and whether multilateral institutions like the United Nations still serve African states fairly. This is a deep discussion on diplomacy, geopolitics, power, conflict, and Africa's future in a world increasingly shaped by force rather than rules.Sponsors:Threat Informat - https://threatinformant.io/ Akagera Medicines- https://www.akageramedicines.com Join our Patreon to enjoy ad-free viewing https://www.patreon.com/cw/TheLongFormPod or support us via our MTN Mobile Money Code 95462 or directly to our phone number: +250795462739Visit Sanny Ntayombya's Official Website: https://sannyntayombya.comProduced by LF Media

Six years ago, Katya Zamarin's mother was murdered by a stranger who also maimed her Aunt Julia. More recently, her father died of a heart attack. He visits Katya in a dream, and she believes he wants her to head to Paris for a conference organized by his environmentalist hero. Katya's youngest sister, Arielle, a recovering addict and aspiring actress, tags along. And Aunt Julia, once an infamous soap opera star, flies to Paris when Arielle suffers an unexplained sleeping sickness. In 2018, Andrew O'Brien nearly lost his leg — and with it, the belief that his body could ever carry him the way it once had. Today, he's running 26.2 miles in Cape Town on May 24th to raise money for Congolese refugees through UNHCR, fueled by a love for Africa that was born during his first visit to Cape Town in 2019, was deepened in the internally displaced camps of Goma in the DRC in 2024, and cemented in the refugee camps of Burundi in 2025. This is a comeback story, a mission, and a whole lot of heart — and we're so glad he's back on the show to share it.

John Lennox came to worldwide attention and renown through debating the likes of famous atheists Dawkins and Hitchens, but less well known is his work behind the Iron Curtain, which impacted millions in its own right. At 82-years-old now, he's still managed to come out with two books this year alone, including his autobiography. His is a high-profile life well-lived indeed, free from any whiff of scandal; humble, gracious, laser-focused, it's wonderful to listen to this wise old hero of the faith looking back and readying himself to meet his Maker.▶️ Watch this as a video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/pJuRm0w3Rl4Check out www.johnlennox.org to see his debates with Dawkins et al, or buy his books, including his recently-released autobiography ‘John C. Guest: Binta Diop, Former Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, African Union Host: Sumedha Tanwar, MPP Candidate, Harvard Kennedy School This episode of the CID Voices Road to GEM podcast examines the role of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding across Africa. The conversation traces how women from the Mano River region, Burundi, and the DRC pushed their way into peace processes and shaped outcomes, from influencing peace accords to entrenching gender parity in constitutions. It explores the root causes of conflict on the continent, including poor governance, inequality, and lack of accountability, and asks why women remain largely absent from formal negotiations despite evidence of their impact. The discussion also turns to economic empowerment, particularly in agriculture, and what it would mean to reimagine international development around human capital and sustainable growth.

Send us Fan MailDr. Jennifer Harling, pediatrician and neonatologist who spent six years practicing in Burundi, one of the poorest countries in the world, shares what it took to introduce breast milk fortification, bubble CPAP, and revised sepsis protocols in a setting with nurse-to-patient ratios as high as one to forty and near-zero access to medical supplies. She reflects on the extraordinary obstacles of implementing quality improvement in resource-limited environments — from procurement failures to language barriers to training nurses with limited formal education — and explains why sustainability ultimately came down to the same thing it does everywhere: culture. She also turns the lens around and offers what may be the most universally applicable lesson she brought back from Burundi: slow down, and ask the parent what their number one concern is today.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com.
We learn about a new injectable microgel to help reduce bleeding in infants who require surgical care. In a mice model, it reduced bleeding by at least 50%. Ashley Brown, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University and UNC Chapel Hill tells presenter Claudia Hammond more about this new material her team has designed.Joined by Professor of Global Health and Epidemiology at Boston University in the US, Dr Matthew Fox, Claudia hears about a mystery illness that is being investigated by health officials in Burundi, which has caused five deaths and sickened thirty-five people. So far lab analysis of the illness - which causes fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea - has been negative for Ebola and Marburg viruses, Rift Valley fever, and others. We hear about influential analysis from Cochrane which has concluded that "breakthrough" Alzheimer's drugs are unlikely to benefit patients. Researchers said the impact was "well below" what was needed to make a difference to dementia patients' lives. However, their report has also provoked a vicious backlash from equally esteemed scientists who label it as fundamentally flawed. We're joined by health journalist Katie Silver in Mexico, who brings us the news that the President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has announced the details of a plan to introduce universal healthcare – no mean feat in country of 130 million people. And we hear about an experiment that was done by academics to see if they could trick AI chatbots into believing in an entirely fake disease. Fruitful domestic and international medical missions overlap in multiple ways. Both require cross-cultural skills, a willingness to work with limited resources, courage in the face of potentially dangerous situations, and possible disapproval from friends and family. Each is excellent preparation for the other. Many international workers spend furlough time working in American Christian health centers--and vice-versa.
