On me trouvait bizarre. Mon désir de partir seule, ça a choqué ma famille, mes amis. On me demandait de rester, d'acheter une maison, une voiture, me marier, avoir des enfants. Non ! J'ai appris durant ce voyage que si quelque chose arrive, "it is what it is".

10% GDP boost to Global South from clean energy transition

A new University of Oxford report finds a rapid switch to renewables could double energy-sector productivity in low-to-middle income economies within 25 years. In many countries, this would result in a GDP boost by mid-century of around 10%. "Opting for clean energy could be an economic boon for solar-rich countries such as Burundi, DR Congo and Mozambique," says Professor Sam Fankhauser, Interim Director of Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. "For context, 10% of GDP is roughly the amount countries typically spend on public health. These productivity gains are unprecedented, and it could be the developing countries that benefit the most." The importance and benefits of a clean energy transition Renewable energy boosts productivity in two ways: more electricity is generated per dollar invested, with fewer losses (for example to heat) compared to fossil fuels, and renewable energy is cheaper - enabling households, businesses and industries to run for longer at lower cost. The report quantifies this gain over the next 25 years and finds that renewable energy productivity gains are much higher in the Global South, resulting in an important advantage in the growing net zero economy. Renewables could finally start to close the income gap between rich and poor countries, say the authors. The report, part of a three-year research programme funded by energy company SSE, also investigates how renewable energy investment has already boosted GDP in low and middle-income countries as compared to fossil fuels. Spending on renewables gets multiplied in the local economy much more than fossil fuels - along the supply chain and through local wages. The analysis shows that from 2017-2022 this has boosted the GDP of the 100 largest developing countries (excluding China) by a combined US$1.2 trillion - the equivalent of 2 to 5% of GDP for most nations. In COP30 host Brazil, renewable investments raised GDP by US$128 billion. However, the authors caution that the economic benefits of renewables do not automatically flow to host communities. Instead, deliberate benefit-sharing mechanisms such as community benefit funds and co-ownership are needed. The report concludes by emphasising the potential of distributed renewable energy for accessibility and inclusion. "The success of the renewable energy transition will depend not only on lower costs and higher productivity - both of which are now all but guaranteed - but on our collective ability to ensure that its benefits are fairly and widely shared, leaving no community behind," says Professor Fankhauser. Rhian Kelly, Chief Sustainability Officer at SSE, comments: "Meaningful consultation must sit at the heart of every approach to community engagement. The most successful models go well beyond minimum requirements, reflecting the priorities and context of local people. By sharing learnings, we can identify what works best - and ensure that dedicated community funds are transparent, flexible, truly responsive to local needs. In the UK and Ireland, these funds have already supported more than 12,000 projects. With clear policy frameworks - including minimum contribution thresholds and standardised benefit-sharing agreements - we can build on this success and deliver lasting benefits for communities." The report will be uploaded here: https://www.smithschool.ox.ac. uk/research/economics sustainability About the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at the University of Oxford equips enterprise to achieve net zero emissions and the sustainable development goals, through world-leading research, teaching and partnerships. https://www.smithschool.ox.ac. uk/ See more breaking stories here.

Welcome to this explosive, investigative, fact-finding edition of Light ‘Em Up!We are incredibly pleased you decided to join us for one of our most comprehensive episodes to date!Tonight, we shine the antiseptic light of the truth at the intersection of hate speech and the violence that stems from it.While a great many people on the right strongly disagree with the truth, and struggle to accept it, the fact that the radical right is far more violent than the left is unwavering. Far-right attacks continue to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism. As a kid do you remember expressing the children's rhyme that says, “Sticks and stones can break your bones, but names can never hurt you?” While this is a nice thought — it isn‘t true. Words matter; words can hurt — words can lead to murder. In the Holy Bible, the Book of Ephesians (4:29) advises: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, which may benefit those who listen.” We need only look to the country of Rwanda in 1994 and the genocide that took place there. Collectively and pejoratively, the Tutsis were referred to as “cockroaches”.  Who acts neighborly or welcomes a cockroach into their home? Some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in 100 days. (The Tutsi and Hutu are ethnic groups established primarily in Rwanda and Burundi.)Evidence shows that the use of radio impacted and effected mobilization for violence in the Rwandan genocide. For more than a decade we've been exposed to the hate filled vitriol of Donald Trump. The words he willingly and intentionally chooses are often filled with hate.It is evident from his outward behavior; Donald Trump is not happy.  Barack Obama haunts him in thought, word, and past deed.Trump regularly refers to anyone who isn't in his “in-group” as “the enemy of the people” … “animals” and “scum”, you name it.His targets have been the press as a whole and individual journalists, immigrants, Blacks, LGBTQ+ people, Democrats, and whomever he chooses in the moment. His third-grade vocabulary has no filter. His political party does nothing to hold him to account for his vile, hate-filled rhetoric, even opting to echo and use it often.Rarely does he open his mouth without denigrating, dehumanizing, blaming, or accusing another person of doing something with no evidence. In this explosive episode we will highlight:—    As a case study we'll examine how hate speech can and does facilitate violence. From the genocide that took place in 1994 in Rwanda we offer a special feature in hearing from Henriette Mutegwaraba, survivor of the genocide and founder of the Million Lives Genocide relief fund.—    Multiple examples of the vile, hateful, and demagogic language that Donald Trump spews with regularity and comparing and contrasting his words with that of the Rwandan genocide. And much, much more!“The enemy of the people” are words Adolph Hitler used to describe the Jews before his “final solution” was put into effect which killed some 6 million people. This is the language of insecure, fascist, racist, dictatorial demagogues, and it is extremely dangerous. In his book entitled Behemoth, first published in 1942, Franz Neumann wrote that violence served to establish totalitarian control over German society.Violence throughout the Third Reich was used as a rational instrument of political power.Donald Trump's administration does the same.Democracy is dying right in front of us.Don't move a muscle!Tune out the world and tune-in to Light ‘Em Up — Right here and right now!Tune in and follow our sponsors Newsly and We want to hear from you!

Join host Jed Doherty as he explores two remarkable children's books that prove storytelling is about much more than just words on a page. In this heartwarming episode, we meet two incredible authors who transform personal experiences into powerful narratives that educate, inspire, and connect families. First, meet Michelle Krumenacher, author of "Rocky's Courageous Rescue," a delightful picture book born from a family adventure in Kenya. While exploring Lake Nakuru, Michelle's son discovered rock hyraxes - adorable creatures most people have never heard of. What started as a bedtime story quickly became a published book that teaches children about courage, resilience, and embracing their unique qualities. Michelle's journey is more than just a publishing success story. Having lived in Burundi, one of the world's poorest countries, she and her family now work with refugees in Oklahoma, teaching English and spreading compassion. Her book reflects this spirit of understanding and connection. Next, Victoria Smith shares "Liliana's Match: Finding Bella," a touching story about a young girl with ADHD and her supportive canine companion. Inspired by her daughter's beloved beagle, Victoria crafted a narrative that helps children feel seen and understood. The book explores how animals can support kids with ADHD and anxiety, promoting empathy and awareness. Both authors demonstrate the incredible power of storytelling. They show how personal experiences, family support, and a commitment to understanding others can create meaningful children's literature. Their books aren't just entertainment - they're tools for learning, growing, and connecting. Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply someone who loves a good story, this episode offers inspiration and hope. It reminds us that every story matters, and sometimes the most powerful narratives come from the most unexpected places. Have western Christians become so comfortable that we no longer exercise faith? How can we renew a radical trust in God's provision and protection without abandoning our wisdom and responsibility? In this special episode, Aaron and Andy are joined by the well-known missionary and podcaster (and long-time Pod of the Gaps fan!) Simon Guillebaud, who spent many years working in the warzone of Burundi with his wife and young family.

Sarah Davis joined me on the podcast almost two years ago to share her plans to become the first woman to paddle the length of the Nile river.A journey of 6,853km / 4,200mi from the source of the Nile in Rwanda, all the way to Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast in Egypt, at the time we first spoke Sarah had anticipated the expedition would start in January 2018 and take 7 months. So Sarah returns to the podcast this week to share how it unfolded!Spoiler alert!Things didn't all go according to plan and two key decisions meant that Sarah wasn't able to achieve her original goal to paddle the length of the Nile. However, she has become the first woman to lead an expedition along the Nile.In this conversation, we discuss:- how she made the decision where to start her expedition; a harder decision with more options than you might think,- what she felt visiting the source of the Nile in Rwanda after 3+ years of planning,- the very angry hippo tried to flip and then bite a hole in their inflatable raft just 6 days into the expedition,- how she was arrested and detained for 3 days in Burundi,- the point at which she (and her team) decided to catch a ferry on Lake Victoria which meant she wouldn't achieve her original goal to paddle the entire length of the river (and how disconnecting from ego and exploring her ‘why' made the decision somewhat easier),- why she cried in a hotel restaurant the day after she finished her expedition, and- whether the expedition feels like unfinished business.

Send us a textIn this Tech Tuesday episode, Dr. Donna Brezinski, founder and CEO of Little Sparrows Technologies, joins the show to talk about the BiliHut — a portable, high-intensity phototherapy device designed to treat neonatal jaundice with both clinical effectiveness and practical usability in mind.A neonatologist by training, Dr. Brezinski explains how her clinical experiences led to the development of the BiliHut, which delivers uniform phototherapy across the baby's body while solving key issues like positioning errors, thermal regulation, and access for breastfeeding. Unlike traditional overhead lights or fiber-optic pads, the BiliHut is engineered for both hospital and home use, with versions adaptable to low-resource settings and unreliable power grids. The conversation covers the physics behind its design, recent clinical data on treatment time, and deployment strategies from rural U.S. areas to clinics in Mongolia and Burundi. Dr. Brezinski also outlines how clinicians and families in the U.S. can access the device through durable medical equipment providers, visiting nurse agencies, or hospital DME programs.More information about the BiliHut and its availability can be found at littlesparrowstech.com. Shane Claiborne's deepest conviction is that we are meant to live ‘as if Jesus meant the things he said'. So for him that has meant living in community in inner-city Philadelphia for a few decades now, having picked up some lessons from a stint working under Mother Teresa in Calcutta. His activism has involved confronting various systemic injustices and speaking up for and standing alongside those whose voices aren't being heard. It's a powerful and challenging podcast.Watch this episode on our YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/LinAnXuxyNoCheck out shaneclaiborne.com and redletterchristians.org ---

What If You're Limiting God?

Have you ever considered that the life God has prepared for you might be far greater than anything you've imagined? That His plan for you might stretch beyond the edges of your current understanding, experience, or even desire? Scripture says: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him." (1 Corinthians 2:9) Today, I share a story from Burundi, Africa—where we visited a remote mountain tribe called the Twa. They lived in grass huts with no electricity, no access to the outside world, no understanding of life beyond survival. We brought them goats and chickens—a gift that felt like a luxury SUV to them. When I tried to explain life in Manhattan—living in towers, riding elevators—they looked at me with confusion and even pity. The tribal chief said, "We'll pray for you. We wouldn't want to live like that." Why? Because it was beyond their frame of reference. They couldn't conceive of it—so they rejected it. And we do the same thing with God. When the Holy Spirit tries to speak to us about His calling, His promises, His purpose, we often respond with, "That's too far. That's not for me." We limit the Holy One of Israel. We live at the border of unbelief—not because God's plans aren't real, but because we can't picture ourselves stepping into them. Friend, ask the Holy Spirit today to enlarge your vision. Let Him take you farther than your skill set, your past, or your pain have ever allowed you to imagine. Let's stop saying, "Not me. Not here. Not now." And instead start praying: "God, expand my understanding. Take me farther. Do through me what only You can do."

John is a fearless follower of Jesus who gets bombarded daily with death threats from across the world for his outspoken witness for Christ. His back story was that he had misgivings with the faith of his birth when on pilgrimage from Yemen to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. As a disillusioned but spiritually searching agnostic, his convoluted travels led him to meeting a Syrian refugee in Greece with a tattooed cross on his wrist. That launched him on a journey to passionate faith in Christ, not as a prophet but as his Lord and Saviour. John's meteoric rise as an influencer on social media has led thousands of Muslims around the world to encounter and embrace a personal living relationship with Jesus. His straight-talking boldness and courage are a real challenge to Western Christians lacking in gospel confidence.Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/CS7UiKZOBlUCheck out and contact John through johnghanim.comInstagram: @johnghanim | Tiktok: @johnghanim0 | youtube.com/@johnghanim0 Visit here to support John's ministry.---

While visiting friends in Uruguay, British teacher Tom Michell saw a penguin covered in oil and tar on a beach. Tom cleaned the bird as best he could and then tried to release it. The penguin refused to return to the wild, it just followed Tom around. So he took it home, smuggling the animal across the border into Argentina where he lived and worked at a boarding school. The penguin became a part of his life, and the school's life - with a remarkable influence on everyone who came into contact with it.Later Tom entertained his children, friends and family with tales of the penguin. He put those stories into a bestselling book, The Penguin Lessons, now the subject of a film starring British comedian Steve Coogan.Lives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world.
