Is being a restaurant reviewer the best job in the world? Where's the best place to book a table right now? And how did a picky eater become an award-winning food critic? Answering all these questions is Jimi Famurewa! He tells us all about his brilliant new book, Picky. Jimi discusses his time working for Zoo and Maxim magazine in the noughties, and how he feels about his role in lad culture now. In this episode of The Good Enough Counsellors Podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Suzanne Wagg, an integrative therapist with a fascinating journey into private practice. From 12 years in the military to working in education and the NHS, Suzanne's story is one of resilience, growth, and learning to trust her instincts. After receiving life-changing therapy following a brain tumour diagnosis, Suzanne knew she wanted to help others. She later became a staff counsellor at the very hospital that saved her life before transitioning into private practice, where she now works flexibly from her beautiful garden office in Lichfield. We chat about:The life events that shaped her as a therapistThe challenges (and surprising advantages) of moving 26 times before settling downHow she found confidence in marketing herself (with some help from her cat, Greybear!)The power of flexibility and trusting your gut in private practiceWhy being real, human, and a little bit sweary makes all the difference in therapySuzanne also shares her philosophy on hope, self-trust, and not getting caught up in comparison traps. If you've ever struggled with self-doubt in your practice, this is an episode you won't want to miss!
Just in time for Women's History Month here in the US, Alicia has a story as old as time - an 8th century Queen of the central English kingdom of Mercia during the Anglo-Saxon period who maybe was the victim of a smear campaign centuries later. Obviously, contemporaneous records of the period are sparse, but what we do think we know is that Queen Cynethryth and her husband King Offa had a contentious relationship with the Archbishop of Canterbury in that period. Mercia confiscated some of the Archbishop's lands, and the Archbishop supported an uprising that saw Kent liberate itself from King Offa's rule. Things went far enough south between them that Offa eventually created an entirely new Archdiocese in Lichfield that would presumably be a bit more compliant with his wishes. And while Offa and Cynethryth would outlive that Archbishop of Canterbury, it seems that the Church would have the final say over Cynethryth's story. Coincidentally, that portrayal became extremely negative right around the time, centuries later, that Empress Matilda was attempting to exert her righteous claim to the English throne after the death of her father, King Henry I. He went on to become a soldier and joined the Royal Army Medical Corp and went to training in Lichfield. He inadvertently became top recruit due to a negligent discharge by a colleague. He was based in Aldershot and his experience was full on. His medical training set him up for life. He transferred from the RAMC to the Royal Military Police and was immediately posted to Northern Ireland with 176 Provost Comp. At the conclusion of his tour to Northern Ireland he was posted to Colchester to serve 156 Provost Company and the larger-than-life Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard. Having arrived in Colchester he served with Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard and remembers L/Cpl Paul Lon who was killed in action. At the conclusion of his service Mick joined Hertfordshire Police and served in Hitchin and the regime was very structured and standards were very important to him and the rest of the team. During a fit of peak Mick walked away from the job and went travelling !Having run out of money he returned to the UK and whilst driving through Hertfordshire he decided to call into the headquarters and ask for his old job back. Unbelievably they took him back into the fold. Mick thrived on proactive operations and formed a relationship with members of the British Transport Police whilst conducting operations at the local train stations. He transferred to the BTP and started at Kings Cross. As an officer Mick was one of many who dealt people who died by suicide. He recounts a tragic time in Cyprus when he was called to a head on RTC where the occupants of the vehicles were seriously injured and resulted in fatalities. He felt that he had failed at the scene( which he hadn't). and was advised that he was too emotionally attached to the incident. This advice assisted through his career until the emotional baggage became too overwhelming.Mick was having issues in the workplace that meant he went off sick. He found the senior management of BTP and Occupational Health as being underwhelming. He was accused of working outside of the job and the bullying tactics got the better of him. Mick has now retired and undertakes medical training including FREC 3 training and would welcome a meeting with the senior management from BTP Hosted on Acast. In this episode we talk with Emily Chandler and Taylor Washburn, EBB Childbirth Class graduates about their experiences in the childbirth class; their informed and empowered hospital birth; and how they navigated an extended hospital stay for newborn jaundice. Emily, is a marine scientist, and Taylor, is a teacher and rowing coach in the Boston area. Together, they love hiking, biking, rowing, and taking advantage of the great outdoors. And they're also very busy taking care of their baby. While pregnant, Emily dove headfirst into learning about pregnancy, birth, and the state of maternity care in the United States. Emily and Taylor took the Evidence Based Birth Childbirth Class with EBB instructor Chanté Perryman. Emily and Taylor share their experiences in the EBB Childbirth Class and how that informed many of the decisions they made regarding their birth plan, including Taylor being both inspired and empowered to “catch” their baby. They also share how they used the advocacy skills learned in class to better communicate with their providers and each other. After experiencing the birth they desired, complications arose when Emily experienced difficulty breastfeeding and inadequate lactation support. Difficulty was further exasperated when their newborn was diagnosed with jaundice leading to an extended hospital stay. In marriages and intimate relationships affected by sexual addiction, it is not uncommon for emotional abuse be present. Sometimes the abusive behaviors can increase with more intensity when the one struggling with the addiction becomes "sober" but is not fully committed to recovery. These behaviors are often maladaptive coping mechanisms fueled by shame and stemming from unhealed trauma. Many do not realize they are engaging in these unhealthy coping skills. Also, their intent is not to hurt, but the impact is often devastating. Defining forms of emotional abuse and the damaging effects it can have in marriages where problematic sexual behavior is or has been present is necessary to help bring light to this issue and also to find hope and healing for both partners. Our guest for this episode is the hilarious comedian Alasdair Beckett-King. He tells us why he decided to write a children's murder mystery book, even though he has no kids and has never killed anyone. We talk about how Alasdair went from doing shit gigs in terrible pubs with us to starring on Mock the Week. He explains how a failure at film school kicked off his comedy career, and why he believes a bad first gig is better than a good one. Helen excels herself with the running order for this episode, managing to spell our guest's name wrong, reveal a weird fixation with his age, and insult his appearance. Alasdair tells us what it's like to be a person of hair colour, and we unfairly test his knowledge of parenting with a stupid quiz. What makes social media so addictive? How do we get our kids off their phones? Why is multitasking a myth? And what's it like to be mates with Oprah and fat-shamed by the Dalai Lama? Answering all these questions is best-selling author Johann Hari! He tells us how a trip to Graceland with a phone-obsessed teenager kicked off his investigation into how our brains are being changed by technology. We discuss the rise in ADHD being diagnosed in kids, and the 12 factors affecting our ability to stay focused. Johann offers some practical tips for reclaiming our attention, and reveals the one thing he reckons we should all buy for our homes. So yes, some serious chat, but we also talk about online dating and dick pics. Johann reveals how an experience at KFC made him reevaluate his whole life, and Helen shares what he describes as "The most redundant piece of advice ever." Johann's brilliant book, Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention, is out now in paperback. For more about his work, and to read what Oprah thinks of him, visit johannhari.com. She explains why she started the Everyday Sexism project, and we discuss how the landscape has changed in the decade since. Laura tells us what she'd change tomorrow if she had a magic wand, and we ask her advice on how to raise our kids so they don't turn out to be terrible sexists. There's some real talk about pornography, and the effect it's having on men's behaviour during sex. As usual we round off with some ludicrous Scummy Mummy Confessions, this time involving a date fail, ladder theft, and ham. Laura's brilliant book, Fix the System Not the Women, is out now. She's a campaigner, an author, a podcaster, and an all-round legend - it's the awesome Mika Simmons! We talk about why she set up her brilliant foundation, Ladygarden, and what it was like to lose her mother to cancer. There are some very moving moments as Mika describes their last moments together, and what it's like to have to tell your mum she's going to die. Plus, she shares her number one piece of advice for coping with grief. Then it's back to the usual old filth. We hear about Mika's book, The Happy Vagina, and talk about all sorts of sordid nonsense from overcoming sexual shyness to fiddling with yourself. What is a blended orgasm? Do we all have a g-spot, and if not, can we get one? Why isn't calling someone a pussy such a sexist insult after all? Mika answers all our questions, and reveals a fact about conception that blows Ellie's mind. Join Mathew and his guest, Roger Lichfield as they dive into the topic of mental health on a high-performance level. Listen as they discuss overcoming the stigma of mental health issues, why it is important to have two different types of managers working for you, and their advice for leaders in both dealing with their own mental health and that of their team. About the Host:Matthew Cox spent his elementary and middle school years thinking there was something wrong with his brain. For him, schoolwork was a daunting, frustrating, and often embarrassing challenge. He was the kid who never seemed to catch up with his classmates, no matter how hard he tried. “Growing up with a disability was like having an elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about,” Matthew explained. Being diagnosed with a learning disability during high school helped he finally put a name to the problem, and to begin his journey to personal and academic success. “I've learned to befriend my elephant, I've named him George,” Matthew said. “George is not going away but I can choose how I feel about him.”Through his own experience, Matthew knows what it means to be a teenager in trouble as well as what it takes to run a business. Matthew brings inspiration, humor, and practical strategies during his speaking engagements, inspiring change to those he works with. Thanks to family members and caring adults in his life, Matthew was able to overcome the hardship of his disability and has dedicated his life to helping others find their purpose and help families succeed.Matthew offers a variety of training workshops and speaking engagements to fit your needs including:Effective CommunicationBusiness personality profile (True Colors) based on the Myer Briggs.Team Building.Couples RetreatsImproving the relationships in your lifeRediscovering Superman- Matthew Cox's personal story of growing up with a learning disability. The art of conflict resolution, forgiveness, and letting go.ParentingCustomized workshopsKeynote speechesLinks:Website: https://matthewlelandcox.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-cox-64228256Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/matthewlelandcox/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo2HtLSravDuM59jMO5JXywInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/matthewlelandcox/Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! Escuchar audio
