Voices In My Head (the Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 553: Kenny & Claire Pointing listeners to the Hope of Christ amidst life's troubles, critically acclaimed husband/wife folk duo Kenny & Claire are set to bow their full-length debut, Upon the Storm, July 19. Produced by GRAMMY Award-winner Mitch Dane (Brandon Heath, JJ Heller), the 12-track set showcases four freshly penned originals and eight modern renditions of enduring hymns. The album's title-cut, a stirring take on William Cowper's 18th century hymn “God Moves in a Mysterious Way,” features updated verses and a new arrangement by Kenny & Claireand Mitch Dane. "God Moves (Upon the Storm)" carries deep meaning for the couple following Kenny's struggle with a brain tumor as well as a life-altering chronic illness diagnosis. Hallmarked by thoughtful, organic arrangements firmly anchored in a folk/Americana soundscape, Upon the Storm also offers Kenny & Claire's signature take on such classic hymns as “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus” and “Come Thou Fount,” among others, along with a uniquely emotive rendition of the popular Keith Getty and Stuart Townend-penned hymn, “In Christ Alone.” New selections including “Surely His Goodness,” “Have Mercy on Us” and “We Believe”—all written by Kenny & Claire and Mitch Dane—bridge the past and present with thematic consistency. ABOUT KENNY & CLAIRE Beginning their musical journey together in 2005—writing songs, performing and leading worship throughout the Carolinas—Kenny & Claire Hilliard were married in 2008 but paused their creative pursuits while Kenny attended seminary and the couple started a family. In 2015, during Kenny's tenure as a senior pastor and worship leader in Asheville, North Carolina, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Shortly after successful surgery to remove the tumor, Kenny received a second diagnosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome—a degenerative genetic disease that left him temporarily impaired. The couple embraced a return to music during Kenny's recovery, founding a music teaching studio and further honing their songwriting craft by penning modern hymns for their home congregation. Known for their emotive acoustic/folk originals and organic revivals of theologically rich hymns of yesteryear, Kenny & Claire's critically acclaimed debut EP, Are You Weary, released in 2021. In addition to participating in Getty Music's prestigious International Hymn Writing Collective, the couple's music has been highlighted by Under The Radar (UTR) and in The Rabbit Room's New Music Roundup, and Claire was also named among “Ones to Watch” by the Nashville Songwriters Association (NSAI) in 2021. Kenny & Clairenow reside in the Nashville area with their three children, and they maintain an active touring ministry, leading worship and performing in numerous churches around the country each year. Sharing: Neville Garland, Neil Dawson and Carolyn Dawson. By Faith by Keith and Kristyn Getty and Stuart Townend is a heartwarming song that encourages us to live in a way that stands out. It reminds us that God invites us on this incredible journey of faith, where we trust in Him even when we can't see the whole picture. The song beautifully conveys that we're called to live by faith, looking beyond what's right in front of us and believing in God's promises for our future. What makes this song even more special is its emphasis on “we” instead of “I.” It reminds us that we're not alone; we're part of a community of believers who support each other. It's a collective journey where we walk together, empowered by the Holy Spirit who gives us strength and guidance. “By Faith” inspires us to embrace this journey, encouraging us to look beyond our current circumstances and trust in the amazing things God has planned for us. Later, Carolyn Dawson shares a song that's helped her through challenging times in her life: Cornerstone. Episode link: https://grace-community.church/lesson/by-faith
"Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers." English hymnwriter Stuart Townend penned that line almost thirty years ago in the modern classic How Deep the Father's Love For Us. It puts us in the shoes of mockers and scoffers as Jesus walks to his death. And it's a hymn of praise! It's not meant to crush us, but to lift us into joy - as we consider how God transforms both the humiliated and the mockers. Our society features heavy doses of both, but soul-stirring joy is rarely a part of it. If God can so transform Jesus' ultimate walk of shame, how might He do that in our lives now?
Keith Getty talks about composing hymns for worship in the church. Keith and wife Kristyn Getty are known as modern hymn-writers. Keith Getty and Stuart Townend co-wrote the song "In Christ Alone". It was actually the first song that they wrote together.

Concert Friday(Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows)MUSIC"In Christ Along"In Christ Alone (My Hope Is Found)Written & Composed by: Stuart Townend & Keith Getty In Christ alone my hope is found,He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace,When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All,Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone! – who took on flesh,Fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness,Scorned by the ones He came to save:Till on that cross as Jesus died,The wrath of God was satisfied –For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay,Light of the world by darkness slain:Then bursting forth in glorious dayUp from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victorySin's curse has lost its grip on me,For I am His and He is mine –Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death,This is the power of Christ in me;From life's first cry to final breath,Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man,Can ever pluck me from His hand:Till He returns or calls me home,Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.Copyright © 2001
Brenton Brown is a smart and capable person. Awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study politics and philosophy at Oxford University, he would have every reason to believe himself strong enough to conquer every obstacle in life. But in 2003, both he and his wife were diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A debilitating condition, this also led him to co-write the well known praise song: Everlasting God. Brenton has worked with just about every big name in Christian music, including the Gettys, Big Daddy Weave, Stuart Townend, Chris Tomlin, and more. He was a high achieving person who's future was stifled by illness. And yet, for a man struggling through chronic fatigue, Scriptures describing an everlasting God who will not become faint or grow weary were exactly what he needed to get through the day. It turns out, we all need this everlasting God. In this episode of the Great Stories Podcast (originally recorded in 2013), you'll hear more of the story behind this song, as well as a conversation concerning the worship wars within the church.
Opening Song: How Deep the Father's Love for Us (https://open.spotify.com/track/5yxV7E3ezJA6rF4ICYYSZV?si=096f286902614408) by Stuart Townend, sung here by Anna Golden Lyrics: How deep the Father's love for us How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory Behold the Man upon a cross My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished I will not boast in anything No gifts no pow'r no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom Passage: Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me[a] anything in my name, I will do it. Musical Reflection: “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us,” tune by William Bradbury Reflection Notes: The tune BRADBURY is named for its composer, a New Englander from the first half of the nineteenth century. The sweet melody for the verses repeats, then is followed by a strong refrain. Prayer: Breathe in me, Holy Spirit, that I may think what is holy. Move me, Holy Spirit, that I may do what is holy. Attract me, Holy Spirit, that I may love what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may guard what is holy. Guard me, Holy Spirit, that I may keep what is holy. -Augustine
We've said that our best episodes are ones in which we disagree. This is one of those. Today we're looking at the ancient hymn "Be Thou My Vision," which asks God to be many things to the Christian. We make sure to include the oft-dropped "battle shield" verse. Colin emphasizes the necessity to include explicit reference to soteriological themes in music while Tyler investigates the variety offered by grammatical mood. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one/ Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my soul's Shelter, Thou my high Tow'r: Raise Thou me heav'nward, O Pow'r of my pow'r. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. When during the year should we sing about the incarnation? Should we refer to Christ as the Church's "lover"? Colin and Tyler, along with guest host Daniel J. This week we continue our series on the Five Marks of Mission, as we think about the second mark, which can be summarised as "Teach". The reading is from Luke 5:1 - 11 and we are thinking about the importance of following Jesus, learning from him, as well as nurturing and encouraging the faith of those around us. The worship song is based on Psalm 23 - "The Lord's My Shepherd" by Stuart Townend. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stephen-ogston/message

Opening Song: How Deep the Father's Love for Us (https://open.spotify.com/track/5yxV7E3ezJA6rF4ICYYSZV?si=c70a7202ddfa460e) by Stuart Townend, sung here by Anna Golden Lyrics: How deep the Father's love for us How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory Behold the Man upon a cross My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished I will not boast in anything No gifts no pow'r no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom Passage: 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” (John 17:20–26 ESV) Musical Reflection: Jesus Loves Me by William B. Bradbury Reflection Notes: This sweet and familiar song was written in 1861 for the composer's church school and has become a favorite because of the warm reminders associated with its text: “Jesus loves me, this I know.” Prayer: O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Hymns seem old fashioned to many in the modern church. So how in the world did a “modern hymn” become one of the most popular songs sung in churches around the world? 20 years after Keith Getty and Stuart Townend wrote “In Christ Alone,” the song has not diminished in popularity. From Lauren Daigle to Shane & Shane, it's also been covered by many leading Christian musicians at work today. But how did it come about? And what does it mean to the two people who first brought it to a global audience? On today's episode, Charles Morris returns to a conversation he had with Keith and Kristyn Getty at the 10th anniversary of “In Christ Alone.” Sitting at a piano in an empty church, they discuss topics ranging from music and worship to parenting and what it takes to live the Christian life. They also discuss the release of their album “Hymns for the Christian Life,” which we still have available for your gift to Haven Ministries at haventoday.org.

Voices In My Head Podcast Episode 335: Simple Hymns - Songs of RedemptionOn August 30th, Venture3Media (V3M) launched its Simple Hymns series with the release of the album Simple Hymns: Songs of Redemption. The project features such well-known worship leaders as Pat Barrett (Housefires), Chris McClarney (Jesus Culture), Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer), Dan Koch, Anthony Skinner, Aaron Keyes and more. This 10-hymn album is available at iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play and more digital and streaming outlets globally. Here today to talk to us more about the Simple Hymns series is Steve Nicolle, President and CEO of Venture3 MediaThe first of several new recordings in the Simple Hymns series to release over the next year, Songs of Redemption combines classic Hymns with a fresh interpretation, some with additional lyrics, as well as new songs that have been written and recorded in a hymn-like style and focusing on the Majesty and Greatness of God. “Simple Hymns is a response to those that long for a return to a richer and more lyric focused worship expression, combined with a simplicity of musical instrumentation,” shares Venture3Media president and founder Steve Nicolle. “Worship music shifts in style from decade to decade, along with shifts in lyrical themes and focus. What makes the hymns so unique and special is their ability to stand the test of time. When times become more turbulent or uncertain, we tend to hold to things that have endured. Hymns give us that anchor, and remind us that God's love and His nature are unchanging." Some of the classic hymns in this first Simple Hymns installment include songs written by Fanny Crosby, Charles Wesley and John Newton, with Newton's “Amazing Grace” receiving additional lyrics written by Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio. This song, “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone),” was newly recorded by Barrett.Other featured tracks include “Like A Wideness Of The Sea” written and performed by Skinner, “Psalm 62” written by Keyes and Stuart Townend and performed by Keyes, “Blessed Redeemer” sung by Nash and written by Crosby with modern interpretation by McClarney, Chris Eaton and John Hartley, and “All To Jesus (I Surrender)” written by JW Van Deventer with a fresh interpretation by Paul Oakley and performed by Brady Toops and Michal Mitha. Along with the new music, compelling acoustic videos of all the songs being sung by the artists were recorded and are featured on a companion Simple Hymns: Songs of Redemption Digital Deluxe Apple/iTunes exclusive version of the album. “These hymns and videos are purposefully simple with acoustic instrumentation, nothing overproduced to allow them to be sung by worship leaders in the most unplugged setting, or added to the worship music song selections in any sized church,” says Nicolle. “These Simple Hymns are also well suited as a background for personal worship, reflection and devotions.” Future Simple Hymns releases that are already being developed will feature hymns set around communion, worship, praise, Christmas, Easter and more. Voices In My Head Podcast Episode 323: Keith Getty and Sing! 2019My guest this week on Voices In My Head is Keith Getty. Keith and his wife Kristyn Getty occupy a unique space in the world of music today as preeminent modern hymn writers. In re-inventing the traditional hymn form, they have created a catalogue of songs teaching Christian doctrine and crossing the genres of traditional, classical, folk and contemporary composition which are sung the world over.“In Christ Alone” (penned by Keith and long-time writing partner, Stuart Townend) holds the #1 position of most-frequently-sung hymn in UK churches for the past 9 consecutive years. It was voted the #2 best-loved hymn of all time in the UK according to a BBC Songs of Praise national survey and among the top 5 hymns of all time by the UK Hymns Society. According to CCLI, it is estimated that 40 to 50 million people sing “In Christ Alone” in church services each year. The Gettys' hymns are used both in contemporary and traditional circles, being included in most modern hymnbooks (with a number of these now listing “Getty” as the most-featured composers), while in the more contemporary church, more than 60 of their songs are featured on top 2,000 CCLI charts between the UK and USA.The Gettys also created Sing! Concerts, Events and Conferences which exist to inspire deep theology, timeless artistry and vibrant singing for the whole family of God in cities across the world. There is more a lot I could say about the art, artistry, and more importantly the ministry of Keith Getty, but I would rather let him speak for himself.
