As of this past week, several news items caught my attention along similar lines. For starters, Joel Abbott at Not the Bee reported on journalist Tom Elliott putting together inflammatory political rhetoric from leftists over the couple of weeks. Paul Sacca at The Blaze reported on an 84-year-old pro-life volunteer being shot in Michigan after she had a 'heated' exchange, and Dave Urbanski at The Blaze reported on a 74-year-old woman who says she was fired from Circle-K after her boss disbelieved a man she tried to stop from shoplifting cigarettes was armed. Meanwhile, over at The Daily Wire, Ryan Saavedra reported on the Fargo, North Dakota man accused of intentionally running over a ‘Republican' 18-year-old pleading that he doesn't want to lose his job, life, and house because of bond, and is therefore no flight risk. Simultaneously, Dr. Michael Brown offers up some analysis at The Daily Wire on whether Jesus really told his disciples to take up swords, concluding such is not at all what Luke 22:35-38 is getting at. The meaning of this passage could be an advocacy for self-defense in one interpretation, as Dr. Brown points out. But he says he disagrees with this take, preferring instead the notion that what was more the point was the fulfillment of the prophecy which Jews bearing swords under Roman occupation would achieve. My question is why there can't be a significance to Christ telling his disciples to buy swords which is both literal and figurative, practical and spiritual - all at the same time. Romans 13, for instance, makes clear enough to my mind that there is a time and place for deadly force wielded against wrongdoers. Otherwise, what sense can we make of "he does not bear the sword for nothing"? That is, God is not scandalized or self-contradictory when He sets up, according to the Apostle Paul's letter to the Romans, a mechanism by which wrongdoers have God's wrath carried out against them, or have terror on this Earth held for them from the civil magistrates. The Devil is, as usual, in the details. Do the governing authorities know right from wrong, for instance? Moreover, what are the law-abiding to make of increasing license given to outright criminals even as decent citizens are increasingly maligned as villainous merely for being conservative and principled? It really does get to feeling sometimes as of late as though up is down and everything is inside-out in the eyes of some who purport to not only comprise a part of our government in the United States, but to be the State in and of themselves and their political party. American Christians must surely grapple with these dynamics in a more robust way to be wise and maintain a good testimony, plus fidelity to God and His Word. That much is for sure. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Brad speaks with constitutional lawyer Andrew Seidel about the crusade to weaponize religious freedom for the minority - and against the majority. The Bible speaks of people beating swords into plowshares, but some conservative American Christians are proving that a false prophecy. They're beating plowshares into swords. A group of committed and well-funded activists—“Crusaders”—are attempting to redefine and weaponize religious liberty, to change a hallowed legal protection into a tool to impose religion on others. The Crusaders are deliberately working to pervert this hallowed constitutional protection. Their vision of religious liberty codifies privilege and status for conservative, white Christians, a dwindling demographic. It's a weapon to maintain their dominant, privileged caste status that can be used against nearly every law, rule, or regulation. https://andrewlseidel.com/american-crusade/ ANNOUNCING THE FIRST SWAJ LIVE EVENT! https://www.bradonishi.com/nationalism/ For access to the full Orange Wave series, click here: https://irreverent.supportingcast.fm/products/the-orange-wave-a-history-of-the-religious-right-since-1960 Pre-Order Brad's new book: https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163 To Donate: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BradleyOnishi Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/straightwhiteamericanjesus SWAJ Apparel is here! https://straight-white-american-jesus.creator-spring.com/listing/not-today-uncle-ron Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, while I generally stand by my take on the history of thought within the Genevan Academy, under the rectorship of Theodore Beza (John Calvin's right hand man), I explore ways in which I didn't see how much the form or style of theology he propagated has had negative, unintended consequences on Western culture, especially that of American Christian culture. As always, feel free to skip this if it doesn't interest you. We'll be back with more playful stuff in weeks to come.

Pastor Dennis Allan teaches through the story known as "The Rich Young Ruler," as recorded in the Gospel of Mark. Jesus and His disciples are on their way to Jerusalem and Jesus is continuing to teach them the ways of the Kingdom. Jesus makes it clear - wealth makes it very difficult for a person to inherit eternal life as it pulls people away from dependence on Jesus and entices them to live for themselves instead of their neighbors. It's a clear and stark teaching that Christians in America need to contend and wrestle with. American Christians tend to believe wealth is a sign of God's blessing and an outcome of their own righteous living. Jesus, though, recognizes wealth creates obstacles that make it very hard for people to follow Jesus.

Black Christianity in America has long been studied as a blend of indigenous African and Protestant elements. Jeroen Dewulf redirects the conversation by focusing on the enduring legacy of seventeenth-century Afro-Atlantic Catholics in the broader history of African American Christianity. With homelands in parts of Africa with historically strong Portuguese influence, such as the Cape Verde Islands, São Tomé, and Kongo, these Africans embraced variants of early modern Portuguese Catholicism that they would take with them to the Americas as part of the forced migration that was the transatlantic slave trade. Their impact upon the development of Black religious, social, and political activity in North America would be felt from the southern states as far north as what would become New York. Dewulf's analysis focuses on the historical documentation of Afro-Atlantic Catholic rituals, devotions, and social structures. Of particular importance are brotherhood practices, which were critical in the dissemination of Afro-Atlantic Catholic culture among Black communities, a culture that was pre-Tridentine in nature and wary of external influences. These fraternal Black mutual-aid and burial society structures were critically important to the development and resilience of Black Christianity in America through periods of changing social conditions. Afro-Atlantic Catholics: America's First Black Christians (U Notre Dame Press, 2022) shows how a sizable minority of enslaved Africans actively transformed the American Christian landscape and would lay a distinctly Afro-Catholic foundation for African American religious traditions today. This book will appeal to scholars in the history of Christianity, African American and African diaspora studies, and Iberian studies. Allison Isidore is a Religious Studies Ph.D. student at the University of Iowa and is the Assistant Director for the American Catholic Historical Association. Her research interest is focused on the twentieth-century American Civil Rights Movement and the Catholic Church's response to racism and the participation of Catholic clergy, nuns, and laypeople in marches, sit-ins, and kneel-ins during the 1950s and 1960s. Christians today need to be aware of the dangers of the prosperity gospel and false doctrines within the American church. The prosperity gospel has increased in popularity following the close of World War II and the rise of televangelism, preaching a pathway to health, wealth, and success. However, the Bible clearly contends that Christians will experience persecution in this life. American Gospel: Christ Alone is an impactful documentary that expertly uncovers the chilling roots and heresies found within the prosperity gospel movement. The deception of the Roman Catholic church and the Pope is also examined.   TAKEAWAYS Catholics and Christians cannot be yoked together because they are strongly divided on doctrinal issues like justification, grace, and Christ's sacrifice.  Seven vile songs are up for nomination at the MTV VMA's, and they are all inappropriate for tweens and teens.  Lil Nas X promotes New Age ideologies in his popular music video “Industry Baby”. Nowhere in Scripture does it say that Christians in America will be spared from persecution.

Brad and. Dan begin by discussing the week's GOP primary results, nothing that the GOP remains the Party of Trump. They juxtapose these results with the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, the Trump Org tax case in NY, and the other ongoing investigations. The takeaway: facts and morality don't matter in MAGA land. Just fealty to the leader. They then transition to two stories about American Christianity. First, the DOJ's investigation into the Southern Baptist Convention and what that means for the SBC's governance, theology, and future. The takeaway: we should stop giving American Christians the benefit of the doubt. Christian does not automatically mean good, civil, or trustworthy. https://www.npr.org/2022/08/13/1117362904/southern-baptists-doj-investigation-sexual-abuse Houston Chronicle's Robert Downen on SWAJ: https://www.irreverent.fm/show/straight-white-american-jesus-1/special-episode-the-southern-baptist-conventions-apocalypse-with-robert-downen/ The last segment is on the new article from the Atlantic on how Rad-Trad Catholics are using the rosary to as a militant symbol for spiritual and political warfare. This leads to analysis of how the Rad Trad movement represents a significant Christian nationalist faction within American Catholicism. Brad argues that there are correspondent elements of nostalgia, apocalypticism, and literalism with White Evangelical Christian nationalism. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/08/radical-traditionalist-catholic-christian-rosary-weapon/671122/?utm_source=apple_news For access to the full Orange Wave series, click here: https://irreverent.supportingcast.fm/products/the-orange-wave-a-history-of-the-religious-right-since-1960 Sign up for the SWAJ seminar: https://straightwhiteamericanjesus.com/swaj-seminars/ Pre-Order Brad's new book: https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163 To Donate: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BradleyOnishi Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/straightwhiteamericanjesus SWAJ Apparel is here! https://straight-white-american-jesus.creator-spring.com/listing/not-today-uncle-ron Learn more about your ad choices. In early March 2021, the U.S. Senate's Caucus on International Narcotics Control released a report on the increasing potency of marijuana products available on the market. At the time, America was just a year into the pandemic and related lockdowns, so marijuana policy was not front and center on everyone's mind. It should have been. In fact, the findings contained in the report can be described as shocking. A more creative, but just as accurate, title for this 58-page report would be “This Isn't Your Grandpa's Weed.”  Included in the findings, the THC levels in marijuana products are soaring. THC is the psychoactive chemical that gives pot users a high, and reportedly provides relief from pain and nausea. In recent years, high-potency products have become more common. In 1990, the average concentration of THC in a marijuana plant was 4%. By 2012, it had tripled to 12%. Today, some products on the market have THC levels as high as 90%.   These increasing levels come even though a 2020 NIH study found that pain relief benefits of marijuana require THC levels no higher than 5% and that marijuana with higher THC levels might even be less effective in fighting pain. Setting aside the consistent political reality that legalizing medical marijuana is always intended to lead to the legalizing of recreational marijuana—even if legitimate pain patients need medical marijuana, they do not need THC levels of 90%.  And yet, marijuana policies are clearly headed in a direction that does not align with what we now know. Most U.S. states allow marijuana use in some capacity. The only two states in the country with a cap on THC levels and high-potency products are Vermont and California, where the cap is 60%. Right now, Ohio's legislature is considering a bill to cap THC levels at 90%. At that level, what is the point?  While the political posturing continues, a dystopian reality born of the marijuana revolution is unfolding outside statehouses. Doctors and emergency rooms across the country have sounded the alarm on the spike in psychosis, suicidal ideation, actual suicide, schizophrenia, and addiction-like behavior they have seen among young people using high-potency marijuana.  In June, The New York Times reported the story of a teenage girl who could not stop fainting and throwing up after becoming functionally addicted to vaping high-potency pot. A doctor at the Adolescent Substance Use and Addiction Program at Boston Children's hospital has reported an explosion in the number of young cannabis users experiencing “hallucinations and trouble distinguishing between fantasy and reality.” And increased marijuana use also poses secondary dangers such as more deadly traffic accidents, more poisonings of young people who mistake edibles for candy, and a worsening opioid crisis, which many doctors believe is directly correlated with marijuana legalization.   Lawmakers in Colorado, the first state to legalize recreational marijuana 10 years ago, are now trying to apply brakes to this runaway train. Last year, the state legislature passed a bill mandating that coroners test THC levels when someone under 25 suffers a “non-natural death.” According to one state senator, “Since legalization in Colorado, the regulatory framework has failed to keep up with the evolution of the new products….  The industry has changed, and we need to catch up with those changes.” Unfortunately, “catching up with changes” is not generally a “strength” of government.  The Church, however, can play a redemptive role. American Christians have a responsibility to advocate for policies that benefit our neighbors' welfare and against policies that hurt them. Marijuana should be no different. The 30-billion dollar marijuana industry has been incredibly deft in crafting messaging that makes anyone opposed to legalizing weed seem “uncool” or “behind the times.”   So, it is essential to understand that today's weed is far ahead of the times. We are far removed from the Cheech and Chong days. This stuff is dangerous, particularly for young people. Christians should be highly motivated to not let this cat out of the bag wherever it has not yet been loosed and to minister to people where it has, including in addiction recovery centers and other healthcare settings.   Christians have a legacy of running into the plague when everyone else is running away. Marijuana legalization has reached plague status. It is time to head in.

For years, émigrés from the former Soviet bloc have been telling Rod Dreher they see telltale signs of "soft" totalitarianism cropping up in America--something more Brave New World than Nineteen Eighty-Four. Identity politics are beginning to encroach on every aspect of life. Civil liberties are increasingly seen as a threat to "safety". Progressives marginalize conservative, traditional Christians, and other dissenters. Technology and consumerism hasten the possibility of a corporate surveillance state. And the pandemic, having put millions out of work, leaves our country especially vulnerable to demagogic manipulation. In Live Not By Lies, Dreher amplifies the alarm sounded by the brave men and women who fought totalitarianism. He explains how the totalitarianism facing us today is based less on overt violence and more on psychological manipulation. He tells the stories of modern-day dissidents--clergy, laity, martyrs, and confessors from the Soviet Union and the captive nations of Europe--who offer practical advice for how to identify and resist totalitarianism in our time. Following the model offered by a prophetic World War II-era pastor who prepared believers in his Eastern European to endure the coming of communism, Live Not By Lies teaches American Christians a method for resistance:   •  SEE: Acknowledge the reality of the situation.   •  JUDGE: Assess reality in the light of what we as Christians know to be true.   •  ACT: Take action to protect truth. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not By Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance.
