Today on the Horses Mouth, I was joined by Dr Harley Mackenzie — a long-time Torquay local, leader in the energy sector, and a passionate advocate for reform. Dr Mackenzie has just announced he's running for the federal seat of Corangamite, representing the Legalise Cannabis Party. His campaign isn't just about changing laws — it's about health, personal freedom, and bringing some much-needed common sense to the national conversation on cannabis. As he puts it: “The war on drugs has failed. It's time for a smarter approach.” www.legalisecannabis.org.au I hope you enjoy our chat

It's been a patriotic weekend in the UK with High bunting to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. A jury has delivered Justice for Johnny Depp but darkness still pervades the state of Victoria. I dissect all this on my return from NSW on Tim's News Explosion. Dan Andrews has been using a secret big brother monitoring system called Insights Victoria to keep tabs on what Victorians are saying on social media and spending on their credit cards. It was set up in September 2020 during lockdown but is continuing to be used in other areas of Government policy. Expelled Liberal MLC Bernie Finn has gone back to the future by rejoining the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). Bernie was the DLP candidate for the seat of Corangamite in the 1980 federal election. The DLP was founded in the anti-Communist Labor split of 1955 with an overwhelmingly Catholic membership. It has elected two Victorian MLCs and one Victorian Senator in the 21st Century. The Queen's Platinum Jubilee has brought out the best in Britain after two years of horrific lockdowns. But Australian ex-pat Yassmin Abdel-Magied was triggered by all the Union Jacks many of which were displayed on buntings. Yassmin is back tweeting and giving interviews to promote a new book. Last week she told the Nine Newspapers she is considering revoking her Australian citizenship and if she hears an Australian accent anywhere she will leave. There was finally Justice for Johnny Depp with a jury ordering ex-wife Amber Heard to pay him $15 million in damages for defaming him in a Washington Post op-ed accusing him of domestic violence. Heard's acting career is over with all her scenes from Aquaman 2 cut. Former NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has been awarded by a Federal Court $715,000 in damages from Google for refusing to remove two YouTube videos by friendlyjordies (Jordan Shanks) that wrongfully suggested he was corrupt and also made racist remarks about his Italian heritage. Barilaro settled his suit against friendlyjordies late last year. Nick Patterson of the Australian Peacemakers has launched a Help Fight Corrupt Police fund as he will face trial in November accused of assaulting police when officers ran at anti-lockdown protestors during Melbourne's Lockdown number four last year. If found guilty Nick faces a minimum jail sentence of 6 months. The Australian federal election is nearly here, and I was lucky enough to sit down for a last-minute chat with Meg Watkins, a candidate for the Animal Justice Party for Corangamite electorate, on the Surf Coast in Victoria. Meg is a passionate animal and environmental advocate and is just 24 years old. On this episode, Meg shares how her overseas travels inspired her to go vegan and stand up for what she believes in. She also very graciously explains some of the Australian political system to me (this is not my forte guys, bear with me!) and why it's SO important to vote for the party that aligns best with your beliefs, even if it's they likely won't win.Connect with Meg:meg.watkins.ajp@gmail.comFacebookInstagramMentions on this episode:Animal Justice PartyAnonymous for the VoicelessFor podcast updates and recipes, you can follow me on Instagram, Tiktok or check out my blog https://vegan-diaries.com/.

Inside Story’s Tim Colebatch says three Victorian seats are seen as “pretty certain” wins for Labor - Dunkley, Corangamite and Chisholm. A number of others “are really open” - Casey, La Trobe, Deakin, Flinders and possibly even Higgins. “It does strike me that [the Liberals] they’ve done a lot to show the flag in Victoria. Morrison has been down there frequently”. Colebatch tells The Conversation climate change is a big factor in many of the blue ribbon Victorian electorates. “The failure of the government to tackle climate change is a real drawback for the Liberals when they try and confront an electorate like this, because it’s full of an educated and wealthy people who understand that we have to do something and don’t mind the cost of doing it.” On the Senate, Colebatch thinks it will have fewer crossbenchers because of the larger vote needed in a half-Senate election; he says it will be particularly hard for the minor parties of the right to get in.
We are joined by the Independent Candidate for Corangamite and one of the leaders of the fight against exploratory drilling in the Great Australian Bight Damien Cole. We are also joined by climate change expert Scott Ferraro to discuss the fight for the bight and why it represents a starting point for the journey to a zero emission economy. This isn't a platform to rant, this episode is designed to be a conversation about climate change and why the changes necessary to avoid the worst of climate change will require the greatest mobilisation of society in history.
