This is what EAs talk about at afterparties. Or rather, afterparties of afterparties. Tax deductibility is not the sexiest topic I could find an interviewee for, but if you want to take a stand for your favourite effective charities, why would you be a sucker and pay as much taxes as the one who did their due diligence? SK is one of those soft-spoken and impossibly practical people you may never get the chance to meet. I learn a lot. Most importantly, how to hack the buffet line when it's-all-you-can-eat. The key message I want people to come away with after listening to this episode is the importance of due diligence, and also that EA Global events are dope. Enjoyed it? We recorded 2 fresh episodes at EAG Boston and they'll be out this month. All mistakes in this are mine. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you'd like me to make any corrections. I loved hearing how James's experience in the aid sector has influenced his views on effectiveness and optimization. Having worked with refugees, aid organizations, and advocates for children, James brings valuable field experience into his advocacy work. After seeing how major aid organizations operate, now, for him, “Okay is not good enough.” This is the 2nd in a set of 3 episodes focused on effective giving, and the 1st of two recorded at the EA Canada Retreat at the Center for Social Innovation in Toronto. Next week, we'll hear from SK OwYong from RC Forward. This episode is meaningful to me personally because in recording it, I literally make the 10% pledge live. I'd had it in mind to make the pledge for years but it was something about the moment that got me to finally do it. I'm planning to make my charitable donations near the end of the year. On this show we welcome back Zane McNeill to discuss their new edited collection: Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontline of Labor and Animal Rights (published by Peter Lang, 2024). This incredible collection of contributions from activists and scholars about the structures of violence and oppression that are shared by human and non-human labourers working and dying in necropolitical facilities. The book also asks readers to consider the intersection between class and species, race, gender and other categories of oppression, and the ways that the contemporary Animal Activist Non-profit Sector (AANS) upholds hierarchies in its mission towards animal liberation. There are some powerful examples of successful social and political campaigns that we can draw from and that can help us to build strategic alliances and coalitions between social movements and political subjects. Zane McNeill is a scholar-activist, 15-year vegan, and National Lawyers Guild's Animal Liberation Committee chair. They have worked closely with the Institute of Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) and have published chapters in ICAS collections, including Vegans on Speciesism and Ableism: Ecoability Voices for Disability and Animal Justice and Expanding the Critical Animal Studies Imagination: Essays on Solidarity and Total Liberation. Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
Investigations into farms by animal advocacy groups is an essential tool to exposing serious, systemic abuses of animals, failures to follow basic policy, and have led to criminal charges. But the Ontario government wanted to stop that – and introduced Bill 156 in 2020. The Bill, Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act, was challenged in court by Animal Justice, with applicants Jessica Scott-Reid (a journalist) and Louise Jorgensen (an advocate with Toronto Cow Save). Intervenors who joined Animal Justice included Animal Alliance of Canada, the Centre for Free Expression at Toronto Metropolitan University, and The Regan Russell Foundation. After some serious legal work by the aforementioned team, Justice Markus Koehnen of the Superior Court ruled that elements of the law and its regulation violate the right to freedom of expression guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Camille Labchuk, Executive Director of Animal Justice, joins Defender Radio to share the background and impact of Bill 156, the significance of defeating elements of it in court, and how that will make a difference for advocates and animals in Ontario and across Canada. Connecting veganism to other justice causes is critical to our success and our guest today recognized this at a very young age. Zane McNeill is a scholar-activist, chair of the National Lawyers Guild's Animal Liberation Committee, and was the co-manager of the collective Right for Animal Rights Activists. They have also edited Queer and Trans Voices: Achieving Liberation Through Consistent Anti-Oppression, Vegan Entanglements: Dismantling Racial and Carceral Capitalism, and Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontlines of Labor and Animal Rights (forthcoming, Peter Lang Publishing).Zane will help us to unpack new terms like “consistent anti-oppression” and “total liberation” as well as “carceral veganism” where animal activists align with agencies to criminalize and deport people in marginalized communities of color when we should be targeting the system of oppression itself. They discuss the parallels of body autonomy issues for humans and non-humans. Zane addresses everything from micro aggressions experienced by animal activists within the movement to larger, structural issues of oppression. This week's Open Sources Guelph is a down affair. What else can you say when China is making trouble again for Canadian politicians, and when things are getting so bad that making Canadians pay extra for the "privilege" of watching Fox News just isn't enough anymore. And if these two topics aren't a big enough bummer, we're going to round out the show with some discussion about animal abuse for human amusement. Sadly, it's just another Thursday in this timeline. This Thursday, May 11, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: China Breach. Foreign interference in Canada was back on the front page this week, a Globe & Mail article detailed how Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong and his family were apparently targeted for retaliation after he led the charge to condemn the Uyghur genocide in China. Now a tit-for-tat game of expelling diplomats has begun, which is raising concerns about diplomatic relations with China, and also raising questions about who knows what when it comes to MP safety. So what's next? Fox on the Run. Egale Canada has launched a campaign to have Fox News wiped from Canadian airwaves for repeated anti-LGBTQ+ commentary. Now, unlike the U.S., you have to pay extra to get Fox in Canada, it doesn't come standard in your cable package, but a lot of people in Canada are still exposed to the madness through social media and other means. So can Canada really purge itself of Fox, and if it can, will it have any impact on the threats to safety for Canada's queer community? The Whale Moonlight. Reports emerged this week that a beluga whale and bottlenose dolphin both died on the premises of Marineland in Niagara Falls, and this comes after the March passing of Kiska, the last living orca in captivity in Canada. The culture has not been kind to Marineland over the last decade, but three animal deaths in the last two months is not a great look when your business is a family friend animal performance venue. This week, we're joined by Camille Labchuk, the executive director of Animal Justice, to talk about this and other animal welfare issues. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

Claudia talks to Camille Labchuk about the two recent legal cases at Smithfield and Excelsior which involved animal activism on pig farms in North America. They discuss how biosecurity is used as a means of creating ag-gag laws, the relative absence of biosecurity considerations in the cases, and the legal exceptionalism animal farms enjoy in Canada. Date Recorded: 27 October 2022 Camille Labchuk is an animal rights lawyer and executive director of Animal Justice—Canada's only animal law advocacy organization. Under her leadership, Animal Justice fights legal cases in courtrooms across the country, works to pass ground-breaking new laws, and ensures industries are held accountable for illegal animal cruelty. Camille has litigated to advance animals' legal interests at all levels of court, including before the Supreme Court of Canada. She regularly testifies before legislative committees, and was instrumental in passing Canada's precedent-setting national ban on whale and dolphin captivity. She has brought constitutional cases seeking to protect the interests of animals and animal advocates; filed false advertising complaints against companies making misleading humane claims; documented Canada's commercial seal slaughter; and exposed hidden suffering behind the closed doors of farms and zoos through undercover exposés. Camille was previously a founding board member of Mercy For Animals Canada, press secretary to the leader of a federal Canadian political party, and is a former two-time candidate for Parliament. Animal rights activism is at the heart of Esther's work and life. In this podcast, Esther shares her thinking on the entanglements between the way we treat animals and how we live in consumer capitalist cultures. Esther discusses the economic structures behind our mistreatment of animals and the ways in which they are commodified and treated as resources that mirror slavery. She then also offers ideas about what a future world could look like; where animals and human beings have a healthy relationship with one another Simon and Esther discuss what facing animal rights issues bring up in others, often disassociation and guilt. To live with the awareness of how we treat animals is to live with a burden. We all like to protect the idea of our ‘good-self'; therefore, to acknowledge the animal suffering we collude with is a direct challenge to our 'good-selves', hence our defensiveness. Esther and Simon discuss whether animals are 'individuals', and what rights they have in relation to individual humans. Esther discusses broader social movements, direct action and mass mobilisations in this fascinating podcast. Bio Esther delved into full-time Animal Justice work early in life. She dedicates her time towards understanding and building people-powered organisations capable of creating transformative change. Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
Two fur farms in Quebec are at the centre of a complaint filed by Animal Justice after they received images from We Animals Media. The photos, captured in August 2022, show deplorable conditions for mink and foxes. The Montreal SPCA has initiated a call for a ban on fur farming in Quebec and are setting up inherently inhumane fur farms as an election issue in the province. Camille Labchuk, executive director of animal law non-profit Animal Justice joined Defender Radio to discuss the situation in Quebec, what the images revealed, how various organizations are pushing for change, and what individuals can do to make a difference. Laws in Canada make sure that marine theme parks such as Marineland cannot acquire new cetaceans (Whales or Dolphins) and they were amended in 2019 to ensure that whales and dolphins do not perform in their entertainment shows, but evidence suggests that Marineland continues to conduct the whale and dolphin shows. Therefore, Canadian laws should work faster to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals. In this episode, I will discuss the video evidence that was published by Animal Justice in Canada and why I think that the laws should work faster to stop the shows from happening at all. That's Ocean and Fisheries Minister, Jonathan Wilkinson, speaking to reporters. Canada has become the first G20 country in the world to ban the import and export of shark fins in a move advocates hailed as a major win for preserving ocean populations. The ban passed in the Senate late Tuesday as part of Bill C-68, which overhauls the Fisheries Act. Canada has outlawed the practice of cutting fins off domestic sharks since 1994, but it did not have legislation to prohibit people from bringing fins into the country. Guest: Camille Labchuk Animal rights lawyer and executive director of Animal Justice
Alex Pierson is joined by Camille Labchuck, lawyer and Executive Director of Animal Justice, to discuss Bill S-203, also known as the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act.
