Jack Owen is a sheep farmer and the author of "You Are Not Your Farm" from Western Victoria. Growing up, he had a real passion for farming. Any chance he had to get out and work on the family farm, he was there. He spent some time off the farm, which was great for his personal growth, but nothing was going to stop him from coming back home and giving farming a red-hot crack. Since returning to the farm, he soon discovered there were several things farmers weren't talking about. In discovering this for himself and implementing it into his own life, he realized there was an opportunity to help other farmers discover these hidden gems. Hence, he published this book. Written by a farmer, he spoke to over 250 farmers and farm business owners to put this together for farmers. South Australia and Western Victoria remain the dry trouble spots of Australia. Meanwhile, rainfall has continued to blanket large swathes of Western Australia, with some farmers receiving last year's rainfall total in just one week.   Disclaimer: Important Information This podcast is approved and distributed by Global Economic & Markets Research (“GEMR”), a business division of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia ABN 48 123 123 124 AFSL 234945 (“the Bank”). This week on the Head Shepherd podcast we have our freshest recruit, James Lines. After only 9 days on the job, Mark got James onto the head shepherd podcast to talk about his upbringing and what lead to him applying for a job at a genetics consultancy firm.James grew up on a mixed farming enterprise, which also had the Gum Hills Merinos stud and south Devon cattle. After a 'gap year' working on the home farm and jackarooing, James studied Ag Science at Adelaide University. He's spent his last year really focusing on genomics during his honours project where he specialised in livestock production. James runs Mark through his project. "It was implementing a genomics program in a stud context, which was at home at Gum Hill." James explains. "It was interesting working with family and working with academics and researchers." James started off by sorting through a decade of data based mainly on wool quality. "Most of the sheep in the population had had yearling measurements for around the 10 months of age." With spreadsheets from 2012 available to him, James set about pulling together a huge database of historical records which he describes as "in a different format every time". Then he moved on to genomics. "I spent a couple of weeks with a lot of helpers and a lot of technology collecting DNA samples on all of the ewes that have scanned in lamb. Which will give us parentage for the first time."... "Combined that all, got through the statistics of it... meshed it all together and it spat out our enhanced genomic breeding values." "It certainly sets you up for your new role!" says Mark. "You couldn't ask for a better background" Mark and James also cover the T90 project. James is one of the T90 trainers helping people navigate materials and the changes they are implementing. James is currently based near Mount Gambier but will be covering Western Victoria, South Australia and also into WA once he's more centrally placed. As Mark describes, James is tailor made for the job. This week on the Head Shepherd podcast we have Charlie de Fegely chatting about things all things sub clover and beyond.Charlie farms in Western Victoria in the foothills of The Grampians. They average around 550mm of rainfall per year and are in a predominantly cropping area but they have chosen to be all stock because of their heavy clay soils.Charlie and his family will be mating 10,000 ewes this year. Last year he mated 8,300 and marked 12,000 lambs. Figures to be very happy with. Charlie chats about his time at the Grassland Society and the "Longterm Phosphate Trial" and Sub Clover research."It was a terrible time [in sheep farming], and we were looking at alternatives to retain viability and long term profitability. Dr Peter Schroder came to me when I was president of the Grasslands Society and he said "Charlie, we've got the help these farmers pick themselves back up after the wool prices have been shot." "The work they'd done at the long-term phosphate trial, it showed clearly that if you put fertiliser on for not much cost you can actually increase your productivity." Charlie says. "One of the ideas behind it was to not have to put a tractor and seeder through the paddock. And it did work. The sub clover seed was there, it just had to be grazed hard enough to let it come back, and fertilised. And people were ecstatic" "It was a great time to be part of extending information to farmers as it actually put a smile back onto farmers faces... It was amazing to be a part of it." He says. "That was one of the programs they (MLA) ever invested in and there's a lot of people that actually need it again to understand pasture quality and the impact on the animal."Charlie is still implementing those principles and is a huge fan of sub clover with some phenomenal looking pastures on his farm. "We've applied the principles... fertilising and grazing. Then all of a sudden the clover comes up" Charlieexplains his weaning pastures which are an impressive sight. "We use a combination of sub clover and perennial ryegrass. I will say at 12/14kg ha of clover some people might think that's a lot, but it ends up looking like a fodder crop of clover." "It carries another month of great quality. Terri has spent years watching the illogical, irrational and just plain crazy decisions of elected Governments, but the last two years have taken it to a new level. Just like many others, Terri suffered through the pandemic restrictions at both a business and personal level, which motivated her to run as a Federal candidate for the United Australia Party and now for a State candidate for One Nation. Terri discusses a broad range of issues faced by her local community in Victoria and recounts many of her own experiences that led her to being a candidate. He went from selling clothes out of a bullock dray to employing 3600 people in Warrnambool. At one stage he gave his employees 51 percent of his business. His employees loved him for his kindness, generosity and business acumen. His cooperative venture became the equity distribution base for Spiritual-Busyness. In this episode, I share my animal rights activism journey in the hopes it inspires you to get active for the animals. After going vegan I joined a facebook group called Vegans of Geelong.  It's a good resource for finding local vegan restaurants and foods, but more importantly upcoming events.  I first came across Victorian Lamb Rescue on this platform when they were selling vegan pies as a fundraiser. Not long after going to the sanctuary, I saw the middle east live export expose and was called to find a way to help. I contacted Victorian Lamb Rescue and asked if they needed any volunteers and lucky for me, they said yes! For four years now, I have been a regular volunteer at the sanctuary, as well as helping with animal transport and fundraising initiatives. I came across an Anonymous for the Voiceless Cube of Truth event advertised in the facebook group and decided to go along and see what it was about. I attended their next event, holding a screen showing slaughterhouse footage and felt a strong sense of pride and solidarity. I quickly took to outreach, loving interactions with the public and within six months became an Organiser of the Geelong Chapter. I then decided to join the Animal Justice Party (AJP) to financially support the amazing work Andy Meddick was doing after being elected. During COVID19, I had a little more time on my hands and decided to join an online meeting for my regional group. They had a number of positions vacant, so I put my hand up to help with social media. After doing social media for the region for just under a year, I was nominated to be the Regional Group Leader for Western Victoria which is quite an honour. In this episode, I call on vegans to get active for the animals as well as discuss the diversity of organisations and ways to get involved. I also answer commonly asked questions about Cube of Truth events and the importance of having elected representatives in Parliament to bring about change for animals.https://www.instagram.com/akyndlife/https://www.facebook.com/elisha.atchisonhttps://www.instagram.com/viclambrescue/https://www.instagram.com/anonymousforthevoiceless/https://www.instagram.com/animaljusticepartyvic/https://www.instagram.com/ajpvicwesternvictoria/

In this salon hang, there is a cross at the center and then there's three photographs around it of different landscapes. All of the landscapes are significant to the representation of the cross. When Australia was colonized by the British, they set up a series of missions all across Australia, and they were generally run by British or German Christians. Their sole objective was to remove Aboriginal people off the land, teach them English, and teach them Christian ways so that then they could become servants for white owners of the land. Basically, the missionaries played a very significant role in the shaping of colonial Australia and Aboriginal lives for the last 150 years. The church for us has been a very destructive force, and its been bittersweet sometimes in the case of Kaurna in Adelaide. We had a place called Pirltawardli where they recorded Kaurna language, almost 4,000 words, by the German missionaries. But at the same time they then started a thing called the Stolen Generation where they removed children away from their parents and they took them 700 kilometres away from Adelaide to a place called Port Lincoln on the other side of the gulf. The children were then just brought up in English language and Christianity. This has had a knock-on effect where we've had to spend the last 50 years since racial segregation ended picking up the pieces of the damage of colonization. So we've had to relearn language and learn our ways and reconnect with them. And some people managed to hold on to some things in missions, but it was really determined on how strict a mission was. Some missionaries allowed language to be taught. But in the case of Point Pearce where the majority of Kaurna people were taken there was a strict no language rule. Missions were quite destructive in our history. To me, the places around them are relevant to sites of missions. That you see to your right, is an area called Lake Condah, which was set up in Western Victoria at a place where the Gunditjmara were taken, and also other Koori, Victorian Aboriginal people, were taken to that site. There was a lot of displacement, moving people around so that they didn't have connections to their relatives. The missions were really really horrible places for the Aboriginal people.

Promoting cultural competency in the creative sector is a step towards creating safe spaces that foster and encourage equity. And one of the activities he uses in this training, which he also does as part of this talk is to ask the people to write where they are from on a piece of paper .. but I won't give this away. You'll have to listen to hear what happens when people return their piece of paper to him.
