We are joined by the Federal President of the Libertarian Party of Australia, Paul Barker and Lieutenant-Colonel and regular contributor, Kevin Loughrey. Both men join us to debate Libertarianism in Australia – whether it can appeal to the mass electorate and whether its messaging is suitable. Importantly, we discuss the limits of a free society, in which Libertarianism promotes, and whether there is any need for Government intervention. This includes debate specifically on property rights and abortion, but also immigration, foreign investment, privatising public services and more. This is certainly not an attack on Libertarianism, but a deep-dive into the ideology and strategy behind the party and whether that can translate to the regular voter. Wages are up, but inflation is… the same. What does it all mean for mortgage rates, the state pension, benefits and the economy generally?   One thing we know won't be affected by the latest figure is income tax bands. Just how much is the big freeze – AKA fiscal drag - going to cost us? That's on the agenda for Simon Lambert, Lee Boyce and Georgie Frost this week as the latest CPI reading stuck at 6.7 per cent.  At the start of the year, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak set the target to halve inflation by the end of 2023.   And it was looking promising. But this latest inflation figures might have thrown a bit of spanner into the works. What's going on at Royal Mail? Some households say they are only receiving their post once a week. Hospital appointment letters, birthday cards, parcels and important bills have all gone missing in delays caused by a staffing crisis. In Brighton, households say they're receiving mail as infrequently as just once a fortnight. Picking an estate agent to sell your home is so important. A good agent will make finding your buyer seem like a breeze. Choose the wrong one and it can cause untold stress, drag the whole process out and you could end up being forced to reduce your asking price and ultimately sell for less. So how do you pick a good ‘un? And just what is gazundering – and why is it back with a vengeance?  The new Tesla Model 3 arrives on our fair shores in January - but how much will it cost and is it any good? If it proves to be out of your budget range what about Citroen's new e-C3, set to start from around £17,000  And…range anxiety is real - so would you take an EV on a continental road trip? Paul Barker, motoring journalist of decades, gave it a go and diarised it for you...

What is the core promise of Jesus Christ and Christianity? Rather than settle for common caricatures, we invited Bishop Paul Barker to take us to the very centre of the faith where he explained the scandalous claims it makes. What is faith? Is it testable? Does it lean on any empiricism and science or is it purely a 'leap of faith'? What about social justice - is that the key message of Christianity? What does 'believing' mean? Is it merely mental assent or something more? Who is Jesus Christ? Does it really matter or is the rest of the Bible helpful without him? How 'good' do you have to be to get into heaven? What about really bad people? These are the questions that were in my mind approaching this interview, and I found it both surprising and refreshing to hear such a unique exposition of the Christian faith, instead of the strawman we hear in popular culture. The second half of the discussion centred around cultural relevance, whether the world is devolving its standards, and whether all faiths will remain true to their sacred beliefs and texts or become secularised due to cultural pressure. We explored the failings of the modern church, and the loss of the core message of grace. At Discernable we continue to explore different perspectives, beliefs, values and opinions by presenting them in their best light possible so you can make up your own mind. Listen to our special event: Dinner and Deuteronomy, as Bishop Paul Barker helps us make sense of those weird and whacky Old Testament laws for Christians in 2022. During his address, Paul draws a helpful diagram to help apply OT laws. We have reproduced this diagram in our Deuteronomy series booklet (pages 20-21). Pick up a physical copy at church or download a digital version here. To Be Blessed

Five Minute Family

TRANSCRIPT: Good morning, Five Minute Families. We at Clear View Retreat love to be able to share God's truth here with you. We thank you for joining us and we hope you will comment on our blog or our facebook page. “Be blessed, our friends.” What does that mean? The top definition given on an internet search is as an adjective meaning, “made holy; consecrated.” As American English speakers, when we say, “be blessed” we are typically wishing well for the hearer. We are hoping for good things for them. But, biblically speaking, what does ‘to be blessed' mean? The word for blessed used in the Old Testament passage in Deuteronomy 28 is “barak” which implies benefit, and we can see that play out in verses two through thirteen when the city, country, offspring, produce, basket, bowl, barns, and all that the hand touches abound in prosperity. However, the word for blessed in the New Testament passage in Matthew 5 known as the Beatitudes is “makarios,” which is more closely translated as happiness, but more fully means good spirit, which is not a feeling of happy but an attitude and spiritual state. In the Old Testament blessings were not personal rewards for keeping the law but they were national blessings of abundance for God's nation to be an example to the world. New testament blessings center on our relationship with Jesus Christ, no matter what is happening around us personally or nationally. To paraphrase Paul Barker of The Gospel Coalition, “So the [tangible] blessings of the Old Testament are still available, yet in a changed and [divinely theological] form.” He continues, “There is no biblical warrant to promise material wealth to believers today. The Bible is a corporate sufficiency gospel, not an individualistic prosperity gospel.” All blessings of the Bible – whether tangible or relational and whether Old or New Testament – are tied to our relationship with the Lord. Consider the Beatitudes in Jesus's Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5: 2-12: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons[a] of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Well, Five Minute Families, what does that mean for us? The Beatitudes are relational, and the Ten Commandments are relational, too. We need to remember that the first four Commandments are about our relationship with God and the last six are about our relationships with others. To be blessed means to keep God and others at the forefront of our minds. Here are five thoughts we need to keep in mind about biblical blessings: It is a missional term for the sake of the nations. The Great Commission tells us to go and make disciples. We are blessed by the Lord's forgiveness to be a light for others. If we are given earthly abundance and tangible blessings like the Old Testament examples, then we are to share that prosperity with those less fortunate than ourselves as stated in Hebrews 13: 16. We must remember that an earthly blessing other than our forgiveness and salvation through the blessing of the gift of Jesus Christ is temporary and pales in comparison to spending eternity in heaven with God. We need to be cautious on how we use the word blessed so that our children – and nonbelievers – do not get confused about why God would choose to give abundance to one person and...

One of our great Every Nation leaders and guest speaker, Pastor Paul Barker, dissects the life of Timothy in sharing the possible similarities we may have towards the God-given assignments that may be beyond ourselves. In spite of the challenges, as the Apostle Paul states in I Timothy 6:11-14, Pastor Paul Barker reminds us that we must continue to "fight the Good fight of Faith."

On 'Ability Sunday', Gordon Gill discusses the churches' attitudes to disability and specifically how congregations can make people with learning disabilities welcome. Reporter Sarah Major talks to disabled people about the difficulties they encounter when trying to attend church services. Kevin Bocquet reports on the £1million fund raised by ultra-orthodox Jews to fight custody cases (and prevent mothers from taking their children out of the faith when they divorce their husbands). Are Church of England bishops too 'safe'? Following the death of the former Bishop of Durham, David Jenkins, a number of obituaries have claimed that we will "never see his like again" (i.e. outspoken and willing to question scripture). The Rev Adrian Alker claims that bishops today are too concerned with "putting bums on seats". He is in discussion with the Bishop of Burnley - Philip North. Ahead of the College of Bishops meeting on Monday, the Rt Revd Gregory Cameron, Bishop of St Asaph talks about his decision to appoint a Chaplain for the LGBT community in North Wales. Following a series of 'mishaps', road builders in Iceland have had to dig out an elfin rock to placate the elves. Terry Gunnell, Professor of Folkloristics at the University of Iceland, talks about Iceland's elfin population and why over half of his countrymen believe in 'the hidden people'. Teresa May has announced that oversubscribed Catholic schools are to be allowed to choose 100% of their pupils on faith grounds. Edward Stourton discusses this decision with Paul Barker, director of the Catholic Education Service. Jonathan Romain explains why he does not agree. Many Latter-day Saints who are negotiating a faith transition, including developing a new relationship with God and the church in which they were nurtured, naturally hope to create a smoother road for their children than they have had themselves. For those who find themselves in this new faith terrain and who still have a strong desire to stay active and raise their children within the Mormon fold, key tasks emerge. How do we parent in such a way that our children will come to feel a rich connection with their faith tradition? How do we help them develop a true sense of belonging while still encouraging them to take responsibility for their own faith, to have a genuine sense of self? How do we convey and help them see and experience Mormonism’s many wonderful offerings while at the same time work to mitigate the effects of some of the misguided and dangerous messaging that strike us as unhealthy. In short, how do we pro-actively parent within a tradition and community in which there is both so much good and so many well-intentioned but potentially harmful messages and practices? In this episode, panelists Brent Beal, Paul Barker, and Aimee Heffernan, join Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon in a discussion of the Mormonism they all love, what it is that they worry most about their children encountering through their engagement with church and culture, and what messages above all they hope to convey to their children and what are the "best practices" they have tried or plan to try as they raise them within the Church.

Sickness benefit claimants and their fear of the 'brown envelope'. Laurie Taylor hears about a new study into the views and experiences of the long term sick and disabled in the context of ongoing welfare reforms. The researcher, Kayleigh Garthwaite, highlights their ambivalence - whilst some have a deep seated anxiety about losing rights and income; others hope it will distinguish between the genuinely ill, such as themselves, and those that are 'faking'. Also, the former social science magazine 'New Society' broke new and radical grounds in its creation of a space for thoughtful debate about everyday culture and social issues; showcasing the ideas of academics and intellectuals as diverse as Angela Carter and Richard Hoggart. A former editor, Paul Barker, analyses the heyday and legacy of 'New Society' 50 years after its launch. He's joined by the writer, Lynsey Hanley and the Professor of Cultural Studies, Fred Inglis.Producer: Jayne Egerton.

In the first of this microscopic video series, Dr Chris Forman shows us the eye of a beetle and the eye of a fruit fly and explains how they have inspired technology. Dr Forman: “Nature has found remarkable ways of using small amounts of energy to combine common elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen into fascinating and complex assemblies like these insects shown here. If we could do the same in our manufacturing processes then perhaps we could recycle our products more easily and we wouldn't use as much energy processing large lumps of aluminium, concrete and plastic. My research into biomaterials tries to learn from nature how to combine the same basic materials into a wide range of structures that perhaps, one day, may be used in all kinds of products from food to factories!” Size of these images: μm = micron (one thousandth of a millimetre) Beetle eye: each individual lens is 12 μm (the thickness of cling film), the entire eye is about 750 μm across (thickness of 5 sheets of paper) and the entire image is about 240 μm across (really thick bit of human hair). Fruit fly eye: Again each lens is about 10 μm (thickness of cling film), and the entire eye is about 200-300 μm (3 sheets of paper). The total distance across the image is about 115 μm across (thickness of a human hair).
