In Week 5 of our Church Unbranded series, Pastor Matt Piland dives into one of the most famous passages in the entire Sermon on the Mount: Matthew 5:13-16. Jesus doesn't tell His disciples to try to become salt and light; He makes definitive identity statements: "You ARE the salt of the earth” and You ARE the light of the world." In this challenging message, Pastor Matt confronts our natural impulse to build our own little territorial kingdoms where we try to remain king, inviting us instead to step out into a decaying and dark society to quietly preserve, heal, and reflect the glory of our Heavenly Father.

This segment explores the boundaries of salting and grinding on Shabbos. While adding salt for immediate consumption is permitted, salting foods (like meat, eggs, or fish) for preservation—even short-term—resembles tanning or pickling and is rabbinically prohibited. However, salting for the same meal is allowed, and in certain cases (e.g., preventing spoilage on a hot day), leniencies apply.Raw meat and fish may not be salted to preserve them, even to avoid financial loss, though washing meat is generally permitted if done for immediate use. When necessary to prevent loss (e.g., in commercial contexts), a non-Jew may assist. The episode also covers grinding: spices like peppercorns may only be crushed with a שינוי (unusual method), such as using a knife handle on a plate or table. Using standard grinding tools or typical methods is prohibited, even for small amounts.
Salting certain foods on Shabbos can resemble pickling, which Chazal prohibit because it is considered similar to cooking. The restriction primarily applies when salting multiple pieces (e.g., radishes, onions, garlic, cucumbers) together, as this appears like a preserving process. However, salting or dipping individual pieces and eating them immediately is permitted, provided they are not left long enough to release significant moisture. Practices that involve leaving salted vegetables to sit (even briefly in a way that mimics pickling or tanning) are prohibited. Adding oil or vinegar right away may mitigate concerns, depending on the method.Foods not typically preserved through salting (e.g., eggs) may be salted without concern. The accepted practice is to avoid salting in a way that resembles pickling and instead salt each piece individually and consume it promptly.

Is your family tree a bit... messy? If you feel like your life is full of sibling rivalry, deception, or "unanswered" prayers, you are in good company. From the tents of Isaac and Rebekah to the wrestling match at Peniel, the story of Jacob proves that God doesn't call perfect people—He transforms people who are willing to hold on until they receive a blessing. Summary: In this massive study of Genesis 24–36, we follow the Covenant through three generations of trials, travels, and transformations. We look past the "Sunday School" versions of these stories to see the grit and grace required to stay on the Covenant Path. Finding Rebekah: We analyze the decisiveness of Rebekah in Genesis 24—a woman who was willing to leave everything she knew for a promise she hadn't seen yet. The Birthright Conflict: We dive into the controversial "deception" of Isaac. Was it a trick, or was Rebekah ensuring God's will was done? We explore the heavy price of prioritizing the temporal over the eternal. Jacob's Ladder: We break down the symbolism of the "stairway to heaven" at Bethel and how Jacob turned a cold stone pillow into a temple-like encounter with the Divine. Leah and Rachel: We discuss the years of labor and the "comparative" heartbreak of Leah and Rachel, seeing how God remembers those who feel unloved. Wrestling with God: We finish with the most pivotal moment in Jacob's life—his night-long wrestle. We learn that "Israel" means "Let God Prevail" and discover how we can also prevail through our trials. Call-to-Action: Jacob had to return to "Bethel" to find his way again. Where is your "Bethel"? Where do you go when you need to remember your covenants? Let's discuss in the comments! Summary In this episode, Justin Townsend and Adam Berkelmans explore the ancient art of food preservation through salting and curing. They discuss the historical significance of salting, the science behind how it works, and practical applications for home cooks. The conversation delves into the unique considerations for salting fish, the impact of salt on texture and flavor, and the importance of precision in curing. They emphasize that while salting and curing can enhance food, they require careful attention and quality ingredients. The episode concludes with a focus on integrating these techniques into a modern wild pantry approach. - Leave a Review of the Podcast - Buy our Wild Fish and Game Spices The Art of Venison Sausage Making Links How To: DIY Cure Chamber Chapters 00:00 The Art of Food Preservation 05:19 Understanding the Science of Salting 13:23 Practical Applications of Salting at Home 21:09 Salting Fish: Unique Considerations 29:42 The Impact of Salting on Texture and Flavor 37:27 Curing and Salting: A Wild Pantry Approach Takeaways You can preserve food without electricity. Salting was historically about keeping food stable, not just flavor. Curing requires precision and measurement, not guesswork. Salt controls water activity, inhibiting microbial growth. Dry brining is an accessible method for home cooks. Fish responds to salt faster than red meat. Curing and salting require attention and intention. Quality of ingredients is crucial for successful curing. Salt can enhance flavor and texture in cooking. Freezing and salting are complementary preservation methods. In this interview, David Bombal sits down with Dr. Mike Pound (Computerphile) to clear up one of the biggest crypto misconceptions on the Internet: hashing is not encryption, and hash functions are not reversible. In this video you'll learn what a hash function actually does (a deterministic, fixed-length, “random-looking” summary of data) and why the whole point is that you cannot take a hash and reconstruct the original file. Dr Mike explains the key properties of secure hashing, including the avalanche effect (tiny input change, massive output change), and why older algorithms like MD5 and SHA-1 became unsafe due to collisions. We also cover what “collisions” really mean, why they must exist in theory (the pigeonhole principle) and why they can appear sooner than expected (the birthday paradox). Then we tackle the YouTube-comments classic: rainbow tables. If hashes are one-way, how do attackers “crack” passwords? The answer: they don't reverse hashes. They guess passwords, hash them forward, and match the results. Mike breaks down how rainbow tables speed this up with precomputed hashes, and why salting makes those precomputations far less effective by forcing attackers to redo work per user. Finally, we zoom out into modern cryptography: why SHA-2 is widely used today, why SHA-3 exists as a structurally different backup option, what length extension attacks are, and what quantum computing changes (and doesn't change) for hashing and encryption. We also touch on how hashes power digital signatures, file integrity checks (like verifying an ISO download), and why AES dominates symmetric encryption. // Mike's SOCIAL // X: / _mikepound // YouTube Video REFERENCE // SHA: Secure Hashing Algorithm: • SHA: Secure Hashing Algorithm - Computerphile Birthday Paradox: • Hash Collisions & The Birthday Paradox - C... 71 [12.25] Kitzur Shulchan Aruch Yomi: 35:8-36:10 [Forgot To Take Challah. Melicha Soaking Salting Type of Salt]
In this episode of the Everyday Judaism Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues his exploration of the laws of salting (kashering) meat and poultry to remove prohibited blood, covering Halachot 15–28 from Siman 36. He details specific preparations for various animal parts, including the head (cut and salted inside/outside), bones with marrow, legs (hooves trimmed), heart and lungs (cut open), liver (requires roasting over fire after cutting and rinsing, not just salting), spleen (membrane removed), intestines, stomach (milk drained), and eggs found inside birds (salted separately and considered meat). Additional rules address meat left unsalted for 72 hours and singeing birds post-feather removal. Rabbi Wolbe shares a personal story of witnessing a heart harvest during a medevac flight, reflecting on the miracle of the human body and daily gratitude to God. The episode concludes with a preview of immersing non-Jewish utensils in a mikvah and an invitation for listener questions. The episode concludes with a transition to the Ask Away #22._____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #70) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! This episode of the Everyday Judaism Podcast explores Siman 36 of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, detailing the laws of kashering meat and poultry to remove blood, a biblical prohibition (Leviticus 7:26–27). Rabbi Wolbe explains the historical necessity of home kashering versus modern kosher meat production, emphasizing the process's precision and the Torah's concern for animal welfare. A scandal illustrates the importance of trustworthy kashrut supervision. Key themes include:Kashering Process: Soak meat/poultry in warm water for 30 minutes, salt with medium-grain kosher salt for one hour (24 minutes if urgent), and rinse three times to remove blood, ensuring compliance with the Torah's blood prohibition (0:54–22:52).Modern Convenience: Kosher meat today is pre-kashered by certified agencies (e.g., Aaron's Rubashkin), with mashgichim overseeing slaughter, inspection, and kashering, unlike historical home practices (0:54–4:47, 13:03–14:02).Precautions: Use dedicated vessels, remove visible blood, thaw frozen meat, and ensure proper drainage during salting to avoid non-kosher outcomes (14:59–21:54).Supervision: A God-fearing woman or mashgiach ensures thorough rinsing, as shortcuts risk violating biblical law. Poultry heads and neck vessels require careful handling (22:52–25:17).Animal Welfare: Kosher slaughter and kashering minimize animal pain (tza'ar ba'alei chaim), reflecting Torah values in precise slaughter and ethical treatment (e.g., feeding pets first, avoiding teasing) (25:17–27:28).Kashrut Integrity: A Monsey scandal where non-kosher meat was sold as kosher led to community upheaval, excommunication of the vendor, and dissolution of the kashrut agency, underscoring the need for vigilance (29:44–33:51).The episode concludes with a transition to the Ask Away segment (Number 21) and a blessing for access to kosher food._____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #70) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! Three actors, one enigmatic play, and surprising insights into collaboration, craft, and curiosity What can three actors teach you about memory, silence, and creativity? In this episode of Your Creative Mind, I sit down with Jaqui Shiel, Mark Cosby, and Lori Kee, three accomplished performers who brought Harold Pinter's Old Times to life in a Zoom performance in Karen Kohlhaas' directing class that I took. Actively Unwoke: Fighting back against woke insanity in your life
Decode The Left with Karlyn Borysenko is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. For the last three weeks, I embedded myself inside the Democratic Socialists of America's SALT training. What I discovered is one of the most dangerous strategies the far left is running right now, and no one is talking about it.Salting is when socialists deliberately take jobs at places like Amazon, Starbucks, grocery stores, airlines, auto plants, and even schools, not because they care about the work, but because their entire purpose is to organize and build unions from the inside. I sat through their sessions. I watched as they laid out networks of jobs across the country, mentoring and training their people to infiltrate strategic industries. And it's all leading somewhere: May Day 2028. That's the date they're planning a massive general strike — a coordinated walkout across education, logistics, service industries, airlines, and auto manufacturing. The goal is simple: cripple society and prove they have the power to do it.This isn't a joke. Too many on the right still believe socialists don't work or are lazy. The truth is the opposite: they've captured the unions, they're expanding their reach, and they are building a revolutionary infrastructure years in advance.I'm sounding the alarm now, because if no one pays attention, we're going to wake up to a crisis that has been in plain sight all along. That's why I'm covering this at DecodeTheLeft.com and on my Substack — so you know what's coming before it hits. This is a public episode. Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
For Labor Day, Clearing the FOG speaks with labor organizer Jaz Brisack. Jaz was on the frontlines of organizing the first labor union in a Starbuck's shop and creating the Inside Organizer School in 2018. They are the author of Get on the Job and Organize published by Atria/One Signal Publishers in April of this year. Jaz speaks about their experiences growing up in the South, discovering the history of the labor movement in the United States and getting involved in labor campaigns during college. They also speak about the tactics used and challenges overcome in building Starbucks Workers United, as well as the youth contingent of the labor movement today and the importance of unifying the labor movement across types of work and around broader social demands. On episode 235, we welcome Jaz Brisack to discuss unionizing efforts for Starbucks workers and Project Germinal, how unions form and why workers may fear them, the popular ideas of unions and how they're misrepresented by corporate media, Jaz's experiences in the Starbucks union and “salting,” whether corporate managers act in good faith, anti-union tactics and why they should be considered psychological warfare, and how workers can sustain a sense of hope in the face of their significant and persistent professional struggles. Jaz Brisack is a union organizer and cofounder of the Inside Organizer School, which trains workers to unionize. After spending one year at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, they got a job as a barista at the Elmwood Starbucks in Buffalo, New York, becoming a founding member of Starbucks Workers United and helping organize the first unionized Starbucks in the United States. As the organizing director for Workers United Upstate New York & Vermont, they also worked with organizing committees at companies ranging from Ben & Jerry's to Tesla. Their new book, available on April 29, 2025, is called Get on the Job and Organize: Standing Up for a Better Workplace and a Better World. | Jaz Brisack | ► Website | https://www.insideorganizerschool.com ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/jazbrisack ► Twitter | https://x.com/jazbrisack ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/jaz.brisack ► Get on the Job and Organize Book | https://bit.ly/GetontheJobandOrganize Where you can find us: | Seize The Moment Podcast | ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/SeizeTheMoment ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/seize_podcast ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/seizethemoment

Episode 4075: Salting The Earth With The Remains Of The Deep State
You hear it all the time now: health influencers and health professionals are urging people to add salt to their glasses of water every day. The theory is that it helps keep sodium levels stable for many health purposes. This theory is not just unfounded, it's reckless and doesn't help individuals with their health as much as everyone is being told. There is a reason why society today is addicted to salt; there is a reason why people stranded at sea cannot survive on salt water; there is a reason why we cannot swallow a salt water gargle without potentially vomiting it up and there is a reason why the theory of adding a pinch of salt to your glass of water every day is a terrible biohack. In this episode, be ready to hear what you may not want to hear—it's all about salt and saving your health. Listen to this advertisement-free podcast on Apple & Spotify. In this episode… • Discover what happens when you drink salt on an empty stomach. • Learn the difference between consuming salt water and consuming salt that's on food. • Discover what salt shock is and how to avoid it. • Learn about the two worlds of thought on the use of sodium and which one, if any, are right. • Discover what could be a buffer for salt and how this could save your liver. • Why would it be okay to drink salt water but not drink seawater if you're stranded in the ocean? • Uncover what happens when you add lemon to your salt water. • Learn whether or not we need sodium. • Discover why sodium is okay when it's in coconut water or other naturally occurring substances. • Learn about gargling salt water and why it's different than drinking it. • Discover why salt originally became popular on the market. • Uncover what may secretly have salt in it that people drink every day. • Learn when it is okay to have salt and what are naturally derived forms of sodium. All this and more, tune in and don't miss out on this important episode. You can revisit this episode anytime you need it. For more information visit www.medicalmedium.com
