Join us for a live recording of Local Big Year Celebration 2024. This episode features the stories of birdwatchers who participated in Local Big Year 2024 and the delights that come from paying attention to neighbourhood birds.Hugh Possingham is currently the co-chief councillor of The Biodiversity Council, and Vice-President of BirdLife Australia. He has devoted his life to stopping habitat loss around the world. He completed a PhD in Mathematics and Ecology at Oxford University in the UK and this led to a career in universities in the USA and Australia. He has mainly worked as a university professor and is currently at the University of Queensland. He also served two years at Chief Scientist of Queensland and four years as Chief Scientist of the Nature Conservancy. Hugh has over 1000 peer-reviewed scientific publications and his list of achievements goes on and on. Amongst all of this, he still likes to go birding at Oxley Creek Common in Brisbane.Jo Bangles is a graphic designer, bird noticer, eco worrier (yes, worry-er), and occasional adventurer. She lives on the Surf Coast, very close to a small wetland she affectionately calls The Swamp. Her Local Big Year area started at the Swamp but quickly expanded to include the streets she walks down to get there. Her spark bird was a hummingbird she encountered on a deserted beach in Mexico over 20 years ago. It was a truly magical encounter!Sophie Walker is bird enthusiast, and self reported “very average birder”, who uses birding as an excuse to get outside in the fresh air and spend time in nature. She works as a registered nurse in an intensive care unit, and so self care and hobbies like birding are a great way for her to wind down and reset her body clock after shift work. You can catch Sophie distracted by birds almost anywhere she goes and regardless of how “common” the bird might be, she likes them all!Links:* Weekend Birder on YouTube - youtube.com/@WeekendBirder* How to do a Local Big Year guide - weekendbirder.com/how-to-guides/how-to-do-a-local-big-year* Hugh Possingham on Instagram - @hugepossum/* Jo Bangles on Instagram - @mojoxposed* Sophie Walker on Instagram - @sophiealice08* Bassian Thrush recording by Marc Anderson licenced from wildambience.comWeekend Birder online:* Website - weekendbirder.com* Instagram - @weekend.birder* Facebook - @weekend.birder Hosted on Acast. The benefits of slower, more mindful ways of practice like hand-drawing and physical modelmaking for refining clear design ideas, nurturing interest in and passion for practice, and injecting energy and momentum into the architect-client relationship. The ongoing debate over whether architects should put their personalities and design process out there for the world to see, or take a big step back and let the work speak for itself and allow the public to interpret the work in their own way. The idea of a less-but-better approach to marketing and communications, and why subtracting unnecessary elements and carefully considering what gets put out can give a practice a clearer and more potent brand identity. Growing Up Raising Us

In episode 3 of Definitely Baby's VBAC mini-series, three wonderful women share their journeys to VBAC. As the stories can attest, there is so much power in equipping yourself with evidence-based information and knowledge throughout your pregnancy, especially if you're planning a VBAC. There is so many great resources and podcasts you can gather this information, and I truly believe that the power of listening to other people's journeys to VBAC is one of the best and most empowering and encouraging forms of knowledge we can equip ourselves with. For anyone also on their VBAC journey, I hope these stories empower and encourage you. For anyone not on their VBAC journey, I hope you enjoy listening to the magic of these beautiful birth stories.  Story 1: Rachel Rachel is a mother of 2 who lives on Worimi Country, in the country town of Stroud, NSW. She lives with her husband Matt, 3 year old Connor and 12 week old baby, Eleanor. Rachel had her first birth whilst living in the Northern Beaches of Sydney in 2020, right in the middle of Covid. Through a classic cascade of interventions (induction, epidural, “failure to progress”) Connor was born via c-section at 41+5. Fast forward to 2023 and her daughter Eleanor was born via a beautifully empowering, drug free and largely pain free, VBAC. Birthing in a public hospital, with a fragmented model of care, she had to advocate hard for herself. By learning everything she could about VBACs and gathering an epic birth team, she was able to achieve a beautiful physiological birth with minimal interventions.  The full version of Rachel's birth stories will feature as one of the first episodes of the soon-to-be launched Australian VBAC Stories podcast. Check out the Australian VBAC Stories podcast's instagram page here. Story 2: Catherine Catherine lives with her partner Drew and boys Wilbur 4.5 yes and Percy 17 months, on the Surf Coast.  In her first Pregnancy, Catherine was part of the MGP program at the public hospital. Despite focusing on maternal positioning throughout the pregnancy, Wilbur was posterior and his head wasn't engaged. At 11 days over Catherine agreed to be induced, due to concerns around the his size. At 42 weeks Wilbur was born via caesarean, as his head never engaged. In between Wilbur and Percy's births Catherine had 2 early births, which, combined with the cesearean birth, impacted Catherine's confidence and trust in her body.  Catherine chose to birth with the Birth House midwives for Percy's pregnancy, and engage a supportive birth doula. During this time Catherine prepared herself mentally, physically and emotionally for a HBAC. Catherine went into labour at 11 days ‘overdue' and had an empowering, healing waterbirth at home.  The full version of Catherine's birth stories are included in an episode of the Australian Birth Stories podcast. You can listen to it here. Story 3: Georgia Georgia is a Birth & Postpartum Doula living in the Hawkesbury, north-west of Sydney with her husband and two daughters, Luna and Remi. For her first birth, she was induced at Christmastime in 2019 for post-dates, and unfortunately, experienced the typical cascade of interventions that led to an unplanned caesarean due to ‘failure to progress'. Georgia had a rough time with breastfeeding and held on to the grief of this difficult experience for a long time. Initially planning a repeat caesarean in her subsequent pregnancy, Georgia discovered the option of VBAC and homebirth at 24 weeks pregnant. She changed her plan, booked a private midwife and gave birth to her second daughter, Remi, at home in November 2021 after a marathon 36-hour labour that was beautiful, empowering and like nothing she could have ever imagined. The full version of Georgia's birth stories will feature as one of the first episodes of the soon-to-be launched Australian VBAC Stories podcast, that she is one of the hosts of.

On this episode of the Seeing Eye Dogs Show on Vision Australia Radio, Harriet is joined by two guests: Reeni Ekanayake campaigns advisor in Vision Australia's advocacy team tells us about Vision Australia's electric vehicles campaign, the risks and issues of electric vehicles for people who are blind or have low vision, and how you can assist and support the campaign. Vision Australia is looking for the public (your!) input on this important issue to propose the mandate of Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) in new electric vehicles to improve their safety. Head to the website here: https://www.visionaustralia.org/electriccars to find out more and get involved. Paige Coleman puppy development trainer in the Geelong region including Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula and surrounds, joins us talking about the benefits of volunteering and how you can join the community of carers in the region and enjoy meaningful connections while raising puppies. We then talk about managing multiple dogs or animals in a household, and how to encourage the interactions and behaviour you want in your home. If you'd like to find out more about Seeing Eye Dogs head to our website: https://sed.visionaustralia.org/ We are looking for puppy carers now so if you're keen to raise a puppy to hopefully become a Seeing Eye Dog we'd like to hear from you! It's an incredibly rewarding experience, with training provided. Carers need time, patience and love to give to a puppy, so if you want to commit to a year of puppy raising, we would love your help. If you live in the North Brisbane or Sunshine Coast regions of Queensland, Central Coast region of New South Wales or in Victoria in Geelong (and surrounds), Bendigo, Ballarat and Greater Melbourne (listed on our Website) get in touch to find out about volunteering with us or apply now via our website.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ingrid Daniell is an artist, an empath and all-round creative visionary who in 2019, following a chance discovery by her graphic designer husband Clifton, bought a rustic shack right by the water in the tiny seaside hamlet of Falmouth, Tasmania. After a modest renovation that aimed to be as sensitive to the 1980's design sensibilities of the property's original owner - and to the planet - as possible, Ingrid and Clifton, whose permanent home with their two teenage sons is on Victoria's Surf Coast, opened the property to guests in early 2020. Since then, this truly unique, enveloping property that seems to capture the imagination of everyone who sights it has received widespread media coverage, including features on The Design Files and in lauded American architecture publication Dwell. On a personal note, Ingrid is an artist whose work and career I have followed with great interest for many years. It was the most wonderful coincidence to recently realise she was the owner of Whale Song and no doubt an absolute pleasure to catch up with her a week or so ago. I hope you enjoy our chat.

Meg Watkins has lived in Geelong and the Surf Coast her entire life. Meg has a hospitality background, deep passion for travel and enjoys yoga, surfing and cooking. Meg wanted to go vegetarian as a child when she learnt that food contained animals, however her parents wouldn't allow her at such a young age. Meg managed to convince her parents to go vegetarian at age 14. In 2018, Meg went to see the screening of Dominion and has been vegan ever since. Meg explored the world in her late teens and early 20s, going on a solo trip after high school which became a journey of self discovery.  Meg became addicted to travel until COVID hit last year, which curbed her travel plans, so she decided to take on "van life". Meg recognised her passion for animal protection and rescue and incorporates it into all aspects of her life.  Meg was a Sanctuary Manager during her time at Pete's Mission in north Thailand, as well as a volunteer for her local wildlife rescue shelter. Hello beautiful people. You've probably noticed that this year has involved a big conversion from non-runner to running lover and I've had a lot of questions from fellow curious but reluctant runners about getting started and building up to finding the joy in running. So, I figured I'd turn to one of the experts to help out who also has a super interesting way to yay and is our first Kiwi on the show! I met the lovely Lydia O'Donnell through the Nike family just after she had WON the Surf Coast marathon. As well as being an elite marathon runner, she's also a running coach AND qualified geologist of all things! As you'll hear, one of the things I love about her is that while her elite level might seem very serious and intimidating (and she might have treated it that way at times), she ultimately came back to running purely for joy and for her mental health and she's even founded her own running community, One Step is All It Takes, to raise awareness of the benefits of running and movement for anxiety and depression. We had such a fun chat in the Joyride lab at Nike HQ in Melbourne and she also shared some of her practical coaching wisdom to help us all get out and pound that pavement – hope you enjoy! + Follow Lydia here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!
