Interview by Kris PetersDepressive black metal outfit GHOST BATH have emerged from beyond the veil with their new album, Rose Thorn Necklace, set to be released on May 9 via Nuclear Blast Records. The band, in their 12th year of existence, are not in the business of softening the edges. Rather, the frontman (Nameless aka Dennis Mikula) is leaning more toward his antisocial traits, serrated like a rusty knife yet beautifully honed over years of toil.HEAVY caught up with Nameless this week to get the rundown on what to expect, and start by asking how he is feeling with the release date approaching."You know, I don't really like releasing just singles," he measured. "I just want the whole album out for people to check out. But it's coming up, so I am excited to get it out there and start touring on it."He raises a good point with the release of singles, because although snippets of an album work for the most part, for band's like Ghost Bath who create a more immersive musical experience, the effects can be just the opposite."I mean, I get why it's done," he answered, "it builds hype and people will hear the single then say oh, I want to hear the whole album now, so it makes sense, but personally, I don't like to listen to just one song by a band."We ask Nameless what he was going for musically with Rose Thorn Necklace, to which he replied."Musically, I was going for my own take on depressive black metal, but more in a vein where it's like… I don't know… a little bit dancy in parts but still dark. I always try to do a contrast between beauty but with the heaviness, and that usually comes from the more melodic, pretty guitar parts contrasted with the vocals either being high-pitched shrieks or low growls. I like to play with contrast a lot, and that's kind of what I was going for."In the full interview, Nameless further discussed Rose Thorn Necklace, emphasizing its representation of his personal interpretation of depressive black metal through a blend of melodic and heavy elements. He expressed a preference for listeners to engage with the entire album rather than individual singles, as each track plays a vital role in the overall emotional experience. Nameless also shared insights into his evolving songwriting process, noting a transition from collaborative efforts with the band to independent creation for this album and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersWith their new album A Sonication, Germany-based metal band OBSCURA launch the second of their trilogy concept. The group's second (seventh overall) album for Nuclear Blast pivots on many fronts. Advanced, elegant yet refreshing, A Sonication sums up past endeavors effortlessly as it gazes with purpose and conviction into the future. OBSCURA are fan-renowned and critically acclaimed for challenging and then expanding upon norms. From Retribution (2004) through A Valediction (2021), the band flourished and made significant progress in a musical genre unprepared for a creative shot of German invention. A Sonication spearheads OBSCURA into a new era of extreme metal.Guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer founded Obscura in 2002. Early on, he set out to improve, redefine, and push forward. Under his self-label creation, the Bavarian released debut album Retribution (2004), followed by heavy touring throughout Europe. Word quickly spread that a brand-new band from the south of Germany was on the rise. Buzz lead to a deal with U.S.-based Relapse Records. The first record out was Cosmogenesis. In Europe, Metal Hammer Germany awarded the album 6/7 while in the U.S. Cosmogenesis hit the Billboard charts at #71. The cross-continental praise and fevered momentum landed OBSCURA on high-profile tours in Europe, North America, and Japan. When follow-up Omnivium arrived in 2011, they upped their chart success, received more accolades from publications like Terrorizer, Rock Hard, and Decibel and had another massive round-world tour cycle, while enhancing and making progress on their clever brutality. OBSCURA further developed their sound on Akróasis (2016). Moored by jaw-dropping tracks like Sermon of the Seven Suns, Ode to the Sun, and the title track, Akróasis elevated OBSCURA to the highest levels of international renown.OBSCURA's most significant accomplishment was, however, just around the corner. The final part of a tetralogy, Diluvium (2018), fiercely pursued OBSCURA's multi-album transformation into musical innovators and metal powerhouses. Music videos for the title track, Emergent Evolution and Mortification of the Vulgar Sun, in concert with a substantial interest in virtuosic, forward-thinking metal, posited OBSCURA in the good graces (yet again) of the worldwide press in addition to rocketing up, for the very first time, the official album charts in Germany. The Germans also topped out at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart with Diluvium.A turning point in the career of the Germans manifested with the first release for the biggest independent metal label on the planet, Nuclear Blast Records. A Valediction granted the band worldwide success, topping their previous albums in a heartbeat, and saw the band climbing higher chart positions worldwide. With epic opening track Forsaken, technical-through the roof Solaris and the catchy, melodic and yet accessible title track, A Valediction established the group as an outstanding and energetic live act, to be proved by their first tour to cover South- and Central America, aside from touring relentlessly throughout Europe, North America and Asia. With the February 7 release date of A Sonication looming, HEAVY sat down with Steffen Kummerer to find out more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Cavalera is a name with its fingerprints all over the history of heavy metal, an inspiring family legacy built upon decades of musical aggression, starting all the way back in 1984 in Brazil with Sepultura.Over the last couple of years, Max and Iggor Cavalera revisited their first three releases, Morbid Visions, Bestial Devastation, and Schizophrenia, re-recording them for Nuclear Blast Records with a new level of intensity that impossibly captures the raw, youthful and trademark sounds of these iconic and pioneering releases. This month will see them bring the songs that laid the groundwork for not just their own legacy, but that of both the death and thrash metal genres, to Australia for a series of live offerings that will add yet another chapter to their non-stop commitment to extreme metal.HEAVY caught up with Max Cavalera for a chat so good we have had to split it over two weeks. In today's second chapter, Max delves into his mindset when he went into the studio to revisit music from his past, how the new versions of all three albums are an improvement on the original, his thoughts on how the albums would have been received back then had they been recorded using the knowledge and experience he has today, the emotions that pass over him every time he steps on stage, the blending of experience and youthful exuberance in Cavalera that ensures the ball keeps rolling and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

"Let me break it down for you why I say nostalgic brutality. It's because it's the closest thing you can get to 1980s Brazil extreme metal scene. Morbid Visions, Bestial devastation, Schizophrenia… it's the brutality of those records, the way they're meant to sound, the way we meant them to sound. Just like the re-recordings, except it's live. It's all real, live shit. No gimmicks. No other crap. It's plug your amp and go."In the full interview, we discuss the set list in more detail, including potential cover songs and new tracks from re-recorded albums. Max shared his emotional experience of performing alongside family members, highlighting the unique chemistry between seasoned and younger musicians, and likening their bond to a "mafia" that ensures a lasting musical legacy. He also elaborated on the motivation behind re-recording classic albums, driven by a desire to enhance sound quality while maintaining the raw essence of the originals, identifying Schizophrenia as the standout performance and Morbid Visions as his favorite for its sonic qualities.Max introduced the other members of the band besides himself and Iggor, their plans on how to re-record those three classic albums to improve on the originals, what things they focused on and more.In part 2, coming next week, we talk about his mindset going into the studio, any difficulties he may have faced, what memories revisiting the albums brought back, having his son with him for the new recordings and plenty of other stuff.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Angela CroudaceNiclas Engelin, guitarist of Swedish melodic death metal band The Halo Effect, spoke to HEAVY about the band's journey and their new album March of the Unheard. Engelin shared insights into the album-making process, the band's evolution, and the importance of positive energy in their music.Regarding the new album, Engelin revealed that March of the Unheard consists entirely of fresh material. Niclas reflected on how the band initially overproduced some songs, but eventually honed the track list by focusing on the album's overall vision. "You need to stay focused and hold a torch," he explained, noting how the band ensured every song fit within the album's structure. The first single, Detonate, was chosen as the lead track because of its fast pace, intricate guitar work, and catchy melodies. "It represents the album quite a bit," said Engelin. "It's a little bit more of everything this time."The album's more confident and cohesive sound reflects the band's growth, partly thanks to the extensive live touring they did for their debut. Engelin believes their live experience allowed them to develop a stronger sense of identity as a band. "We sound more confident… doing 96 shows for the first album, that's a lot," he said.As for the band's creative process, Engelin highlighted the importance of collaboration and fun. The songwriting is formulated on positive energy and mutual respect. "We do a lot of hanging out, talking about old albums, enjoying each other's company," he explained. While Engelin may bring a "skeleton" of a song to the table, the process is always collaborative, with every band member contributing their unique ideas to shape the final product. It's all about creating music in an environment of joy, as he emphasised: "If it's not fun, we just drop it."When discussing the band's dynamics, Engelin revealed that despite their busy schedules, they maintain a close relationship. They keep in touch regularly through texts, emails, or phone calls. Though family, other projects, and tight touring schedules keep them occupied, a strong sense of camaraderie fuels their music.Looking ahead, The Halo Effect is eager to return to Australia on their next tour. Fans can expect a mix of new tracks and fan favourites from their previous albums. "Some songs need to grow on you," Engelin noted, reflecting on the band's evolving live experience. In closing, Engelin explained that the band's name, The Halo Effect, represents positivity and good4 energy. "It stands for something positive," he said, a sentiment heard in every note they play.March of the Unheard is set for release on January 10 through Nuclear Blast Records.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Deathcore will never die. We welcome back a seasoned frontman from one of the genre's finest, Scott Lewis of Carnifex. We also dive back into Scott's talents away from the stage, and that entails his work as a published author, including his love for horror films. Plenty of themes and major afterlife concepts come into play with the majesty that is “Necromanteum,” and with Halloween around the corner, this is the perfect soundtrack to get you prepped. There's no doubt as to whether or not Enslaved are household names at this point in their career, and have been for quite some time. With the release of Heimdal (Nuclear Blast) our back office halls went nuts so it was the obvious choice for the March Album of the Month pick. Well... maybe not obvious as in landslide but close. The rest of that story will surface during this discussion as Buke once again captions the episode alongside several of our usual suspects as they cover this album, catch-up discussions since last time, an enormous section on everything else that tripped their triggers across March, and the usual banter back and forth on literally anything and everything. Pro tip: pack a lunch and a case of beer, this one's lengthy. In other words, just another Album of the Month episode of the Nine Circles Audio Thing.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
