Season 8 continues with our conversations about the new strategic direction at the David Eccles School of Business with a particular focus on the second pillar of the strategic plan: societal impact. Zach England is  Chief Operating Officer at CR England, an alum of the David Eccles School of Business, and a member of the Eccles Advisory Board, continuing his family's generational and generous support of the Eccles School and students. In this episode, Frances and Zach explore the indispensable role of community and corporate partnerships in achieving ambitious goals, focusing on various collaborative efforts that support student success such as internships and the 'In a Pinch' Basic Needs Initiative. Zach also shares personal stories about the longstanding relationship between his family and the school, highlighting the mutual benefits and societal impact of their initiatives. Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University.fm.Eccles Business Buzz is proud to be selected by FeedSpot as one of the Top 70 Business School podcasts on the web. And I was looking up for the In A Pinch Pantry, the statistics. So, it says on there, two out of five students struggle to put food on the table. So, 40% of the kids in the university world are food insecure to a degree. And it's just amazing. 17%, it says, were homeless in the previous year. Like, these are basics, that it's hard to really focus on your academic career if you don't have the basic needs that have been met. So, it's just, unfortunately, we're not an exception at the U. And so, I have two kids in college now. And they eat a lot of food, especially the boy. So, there's a big need, a big requirement for all that, but also just as they've... you know, I've been, kind of, reminded of the whole experience of being in school. It's been a minute since I've been in there. And just the stress, you know, all those things that they have on their plate, food shouldn't be one of those issues. And so, anything we can do to help out with that. And I love what the In A Pinch Pantry is doing to hopefully resolve that need for a lot of these kids. How students are bringing fresh perspectives and making an impact at CR england[18:21]: At a broader level, the Eccles School has just been a great partner. As I was mentioning before, we just appreciate the relationship so much, but you all have allowed us to use some facilities for leadership meetings and made professors available to speak at some of these leadership meetings in their areas of expertise, and they've all been amazing. And so, it's just—there's a lot of different levels where we've benefited as a company from this involvement. But specific to the students and kind of the intern program that I was talking about before, we've been really impressed with them so far. And we had done a couple of finance projects, I think, two years ago, and same thing—just the quality of the kids was just very, very impressive. Of course, none of them come to us with any knowledge or understanding of the trucking industry—understandably so. Not many people have that. On building a culture of family and fresh perspectives[21:49]: One of our core values is we are family. So it's a little catchy and memorable, but it's become just a huge part of our culture that we treat each other like we're family. And so, I feel like we're doing some really good things there, but the infusion of new ideas, like I mentioned—fresh perspectives before—will only help that. And so, we're excited to see as this kind of develops further, the impact that they'll have. Why supporting the whole student creates a greater impact[23:52]:The more the students are well-rounded when they graduate, the better off they're gonna be, and the better impact that they're gonna have. And so, all these things that we're talking about definitely contribute to that. I've been thinking about just the social element of a university experience as well.I mean, it's where you can find lifelong friends and mentors and things that just benefit you in your life—no doubt.Shaping future leaders with skills, ambition, and hard work[29:16]: Frances:  What do you hope these students have when they leave and start the next chapter of their lives? Zach England: I think it's kind of a combination of the things that we've been talking about, with definitely the practical skills—you have to have that foundation. But the things that we've been talking about, all the social side of it, to where you can fit into the team—that's been, by the way, what we've heard about this MBA student is that he was just a natural fit right into the team. And so, being able to interact that way and communicate effectively is so important. And so, I think, you know, what we're talking about with internships and experience—getting experience—all builds to that and helps put someone in position to be that well-rounded leader. And you combine that with someone with ambition and hard work—that's the kind of person we're looking for. And I think we found one, like I mentioned, with this MBA student and maybe some of the others as well. And, as an employer, that's what we're looking for—kids with that kind of background.Show Links:Zach England | LinkedInZach England | Eccles Advisory BoardIn A Pinch | Eccles Basic Needs InitiativeExplorers Program | Goff Strategic Leadership InstituteDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) | InstagramUndergraduate Scholars ProgramsRising Business LeadersEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) | Instagram Eccles Experience Magazine

Mike Stewart is literally in a big league of his own. The 34 year old entrepreneur has built an impressive fleet of 9 Trucks and 15 trailers, specializing in hauling hazardous materials (HAZMAT) that consist of everything from Fuel to Wine and Orange Juice. And it took him about 3 years. The California native attributes his rapid growth in this niche to a few key things. One, he and his team's attention to performance, Two, prioritizing his driver's and having extremely low turnover. and Three, the fact that Hauling Hazardous materials is not over saturated like some of the other trucking niches. In fact, the demand is so high that Mike implores other to get in now. The opportunities are great endless. Mike started his driving career at 23 following in his fathers footsteps, who also is a tenured driver. He began working for CR England as a company driver, but quickly became a owner operator seeing the high earning potential. Things with CR England , would not last long. Although Mike built up to 2 trucks, he got frustrated with the industry and sold them both. Reset. After some “time off” Mike decided to haul fuel because he knew it was the highest paying local CDL job in his area and he had previous HAZMAT experience. He took on the most difficult fuel hauling position and developed a passion for it. He would even grow to have supervisory role in his company, but his dreams for the company were bigger than their own. “The company did not see their own potential!” Mike wanted bigger! Mike took what he learned and all his HAZMAT experience, purchased a truck and a old tanker trailer and started Reliant Tanker Division. Fast forward Today, Mike has grown the company to not only hauling Fuel, but to specializing in all things HAZMAT with a mix of tankers, reefers, flatbeds and more. He has mange to carve out his own lane and has audacious plans for the future. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/trucknhustle/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/trucknhustle/support

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. C.R. England has one of the most reliable trucking fleets in the country. And during the coronavirus, it's playing an heroic role in keeping the American supply chain moving. Its Chief Legal Officer, T.J. England is here to share details. TJ ENGLAND At C.R. England, we're fortunate to be a part of the transportation supply chain. We have the opportunity and challenge to be on the front lines of keeping our country moving and supplied during this crisis. We are one of the largest movers of temperature-controlled freight in America, with customers like Walmart, Target, and Riteaid. These products are especially critical now. Road congestion is down and fuel prices are depressed, which certainly helps us safely and efficiently deliver products nationwide. Our primary focus remains the safety of our employees, customers, and the motoring public. We're pleased that our early and aggressive efforts regarding working from home, social distancing, and other safety measures have been successful in limiting transmission and infection among our 7000+ North American employees. And we will continue to work with our customers, the consumer, and other stakeholders to see America through this pandemic. DEREK MILLER C.R. England is a great example of an essential business in Utah working to provide for the country during the COVID-19 crisis. More details are available at crengland.com. In a recent meeting of the ATA technology council, it was noted by many speakers that drivers don't really need more pay, what they really need is a nicer truck.  Things like a cell phone holder make the list.  This is how ATA member companies will cure the driver shortage that is fake news but they keep talking about.  Is this something that you want from your next company?  Do driver quit because of the lack of cell phone holders?  The ATA and its member companies have no idea what drivers want.  What about CR England?  All they put in their trucks is extra bunks so more and more drivers can be fit in the truck.  Now up to 3 per truck there.  The ATA in no way represents drivers or has any idea what it is talking about.   Have you watched my YouTube channel? https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBLTOE0xkbIyGFFryPsE0Lg I write a blog.  Read it! https://www.truckinganswersnation.com/blog Ready to get into trucking?  Now is the time.  Sign up for the next webinar! https://www.truckinganswersnation.com/courses.html Contact me Mark@TruckingAnswersNation.com

Thats right, honor the ink you signed on the page. After all its your word you have given agreeing to work for a carrier in exchange for a Class A CDL. A Class A CDL is a about equal to a collage degree but only better. You see when you have your CDL you have chance to make in most cases more than the average collage graduate. Driving a Semi Truck for a living also gives you the freedom of the open road if that is what you are wanting. A real trucker dreams of the day he obtains his license to drive the the big rigs. http://cdltrainingspot.com/13-reasons-why-truck-drivers-quit-for-good/ Trucking is a career not a job Newbies Trucking Can Be GreatNewbies Trucking Can Be Great if it is considered a career and not a job. Many people have heard that trucking is a great chance to make lots of money. This was a big mistake once they pursued this so called "job" they thought they were after. Once on the road they found out it was not for them. What we are trying to say is trucking is something more successful men have wanted and dreamed about most of their lives. Its a well thought out lifestyle and they have studied all about it most of their young lives. Most people that succeed already have a general idea of how life on the road will feel. All thats left is honing their skills and living the dream. http://www.facebook.com/talkcdlhttp://www.TalkCDL.com Stop Screwing Up Your Contracts Many drivers start out with one of the big companies like Swift, Werner, CR England and many more. Newbies Trucking Can Be Great if you would just finish what you started. Before going into this career you should count the cost that will be upon you. You will need to look ahead and consider what your life will be like. You have to know that your life will not be the same as it was before you leave home. Once you leave for the first time you will feel all kind of emotions. Those that are married with children will feel an emptiness when you wake up the next day in the cab of a strange truck. You will feel fatigue from adjusting to life on the road. Your eating habits will change and perhaps your health will statistically grow worse. Thats right a big percent of truckers have high blood pressure, high, blood sugar and many more health issues from life on the road. So consider everything before you waist a huge period of your life throwing money out the door along with putting unneeded stress in your life. https://www.smart-trucking.com/blog/new-truck-driver.html/

On January 31st 2017 Utah U.S. District Court judge, Judge Robert J. Shelby, granted certification to a nationwide class of truck drivers who allege fraud and other statutory claims against C.R. England. The court issued this favorable ruling for truck drivers, certifying a class action in the C.R. England Student Driver- Truck Lease lawsuit. Truck drivers allege claims of fraud, false advertising, and company unjust enrichment against C.R. England For many professional drivers this was a step towards a huge victory against a practice which has been considered at best unethical and at worst a deceitful contract designed for driver failure and company profit.
