You can always count on a cartoonist to see things just a little bit differently, and David Fitzsimmons' interpretation of Odyssey's "Mission" theme in February 2017 was no exception. It's hard to put this particular story into words, but if it makes you laugh and cry at the same time, then as Fitzsimmons himself puts it, "Mission accomplished." From David's Odyssey bio: David Wayne Fitzsimmons, known to many as “Fitz”, is the Editorial Cartoonist, and Humor Columnist, for The Arizona Daily Star, where he has worked since 1986, the year Geronimo began working as a paperboy. Fitz is syndicated to over 800 news publications and he also tweets, blogs, posts, pins, whirs and makes other assorted odd noises. When he is not at his drawing board slinging ink or editorials, David is entertaining his audiences, sketching quick sketch cartoons and caricatures. Known as the “Fastest draw west of the Potomac” Fitz has performed his incoherent easel talks in every conference meeting room, theatre, school, and clubhouse west of the San Pedro. Described as a “Flaming moderate at the fringe of America's center”, Fitz is a snappy dresser who loves reading hate mail from readers and making his kids laugh. This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room in Tucson, AZ, on February 2nd, 2017, and was curated by Molly McCloy. Jon Patch welcomes David FitzSimmons to chat about his new book, Curious Critters. Photographer David FitzSimmons turns his camera on a variety of animals common throughout North America. Curious Critters presents stunning images of everyday animals, including a red flat bark beetle, an Eastern spiny softshell turtle, a spotted salamander, and many other intriguing creatures. Each Curious Critter is photographed against a white backdrop, showcasing the animal's colors, textures, and shapes with precision and clarity. Along with each photo is an entertaining and educational vignette, told from the critter's perspective: a bush katydid explains her bubblegum-pink color, a poetic opossum opines upon her often-shortened name, and a far-from-modest black swallowtail butterfly lets readers in on her secret for avoiding predators. Young boys and girls will delight in these colorful critters and their tales More details on this episode MP3 Podcast - Curious Critters with Jon Patch
