Jamie Decker, who founded Experience Anatomy in 2016, visited Discovery Place Science in Charlotte to see Body Worlds created by Dr. Gunther von Hagens. Jamie had an interest in anatomy ahead of the trip, but having the opportunity to experience an extensive exhibition showcasing plastinated human cadavers and specimens stirred something within her she didn't know was there: passion. In college, Jamie studied Funeral Service and Mortuary Science. At a plastination conference in Toledo, she received a personal invitation from von Hagens to study under his direction at Gubener Plastinate GmbH. She spent the following three years commuting between Germany and the US to complete an intensive internship that developed and refined her self-efficacy as an anatomist and educator, and significantly extended her knowledge of plastination. To this day, Jamie has the distinction of being the only American who has extensively trained under von Hagens' at his plastination company. In 2015 Jamie reengaged with Discovery Place Science to serve as a scientist-in-residence during the six-month run of Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life. Within five months of the exhibition closing, in October 2016 Jamie established Experience Anatomy. Today, Experience Anatomy encompasses a fully-equipped training venue and mobile wet lab, deploys anatomy resources of unrivaled quality worldwide, and engages a team of expert Anatomists and Program Specialists. Serving numerous industries with courses of exceptional standard, Experience Anatomy has the power to revolutionize health and life science education. This week I have the pleasure of talking with Faith Haug (she/her) Program Chair of the Mortuary Science program at Arapaho Community College. This conversation covers unique aspects of the Arapaho Mortuary Science program and more general mortuary program requirements. We also discuss the fact that Colorado doesn't require funeral directors to be licensed individually. This conversation happened at the end of 2023, just a few weeks after a funeral care disaster was discovered at Return to Nature Funeral Home in Colorado Springs. Since then, colorado lawmakers have presented a bill to require individual funeral director licensing, like every other US state. However, my conversation with Faith will reveal, that licensing might not be the only answer to preventing tragedies like the one at Return to Nature. Funeral homes have had a profound impact on communities for decades. Learn from Dr. Camelia Clarke, president and CEO of Paradise Memorial Funeral and Cremation Services and the Leon L. Williamson Funeral Home, as she shares her journey in the death care industry, the legacy of Black funeral homes and her commitment to serving families during their most vulnerable times.Through the legacy initiative of “How will you be remembered?”, Clarke discusses how she and her family-owned funeral homes support people as they process grief while also celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. Tune in to gain insights about the vital role funeral homes play in communities and the power of remembrance. Episode Highlights:08:14 - In fact, when Martin Luther King, Jr. passed away, when he was killed, the last person to witness him being alive was the limousine driver from the funeral home. He was being transported via the limo of a local funeral home. And so, how we are still carrying that legacy through here in Milwaukee, we acquired last year, the eldest African -American funeral home in Milwaukee, which is almost 75 years old. That's Leon L. Williamson Chapel that we have. That funeral home has been the site of so many meetings, so many strategic meetings with churches with community leaders, and it's right there in the heart of the community and it is such a gem.12:09 - How will you be remembered? That legacy stands on so many levels, whether it's living or whether it's in sickness, or whether it's in death. What you say to people, how you make them feel, they'll never forget it. What you do and how you contribute, people will never forget that. 14:34 - I want to be a helper of people and being able to help poor people for me has evolved from sitting in that arrangement with that husband who's lost his wife or the mother who's tragically lost her son or daughter, and making a difficult time a little bit easier by helping them to create a service that celebrates the life that their loved-one lived. The answer is simple…..She chose to serve this City. She has worked various assignments, including IAD, ICAC, Child Exploitation and now her current assignment is Dallas Homicide. Wherever she goes the lasting Impression she leaves on her coworkers is that they love her and would run into battle with her. There are so many layers to Jessica's “Why” in life and I encourage the listener to sit back and soak in the story of a truly fierce and incredibly unique individual that just happens to wear a Dallas Police badge. The theater lights are dimmed...the curtain is slowly rising and the stage lights are shining bright……….Jessica Criddle is center stage.
