Mark and I worked with Cal for many, many fun and eventful years at the Standard-Examiner, and remember those decades fondly. Mike Luckovich joined a special episode of the Georgia Politics Podcast on Jan. 22 to discuss his methodology and career as an editorial cartoonist. Since 1989, Mike has worked for the Atlanta Journal Constitution and earned two Pulitzer Prize in 1995 and 2006. At age 13, Luckovich drew his first political themed cartoon. Since high school Luckovich thought he would be a cartoonist. Studying political science in college directed that path to an editorial route. Earlier in the day of the episode, Atlanta Braves legend Hank Aaron passed away at age 86. Hammerin' Hank played 23 seasons in the major leagues and came to national fame after surpassing Babe Ruth's 714 home run record. Aaron hit his 755th home run in 1976, a record that was held until Barry Bonds broke it in 2007. In honor of Aaron's legacy on and off the field, Luckovich shared a cartoon he drew of Hank touching home plate in front of heaven's gates. This program is for you if: • You work in the field of editorial cartooning and illustration, • You typically consider the “impact factor” in your editorial decisions (the actual effect of the piece, beyond the artistic expression) • You want to make sure your work is perceived as relevant, beyond the smile effect • You are looking for ways to differentiate yourself and be more strategic, • You are curious about what a new culture of change communications might look like, • You would benefit from an overview of the most relevant change communication tools in 2020/2021, • You want to streamline your work with more structure and a better sense of direction, without compromising on your intuitive and artistic approach, • You seek new sources of inspiration for your work, • You want to connect with other progressive cartoonists with similar interests. About Camille Duran: Camille Duran specializes in the fields of Change Psychology, Media, Culture & the Arts. He works internationally as a Campaign & Media Strategist, Investigative Researcher, Producer and Writer. He set up the Cosmic Foundation to facilitate collaboration between the impact sector, the Arts and influencers of culture, as well as to implement the latest research available in the field of change communications. Key themes that will be addressed during the program: • Beyond style: Cartoonist/Illustrator differentiation in a difficult media landscape, • Strategies & tactics that have had limited results or do not work anymore (and have they ever, beyond the symbolic?), • Learning lessons from neurobiology and neuroscience, compiled for the Editorial Cartoonist, • Dealing with the guilt factor in storytelling, • Mastering the subtle: where talents are most needed, and where the Artist excels! • A method to frame stories on root causes (vs. on symptoms) of the issue at hand, • Unifying vs. Polarising audiences, • Framings: Reactive vs. proactive, problem vs. solutions, local vs. global, • The "air time dilemma", • Dealing with “Media Drama Fatigue” while staying on point, • A method for adapting global “too big” stories to local & relevant framings that create engagement, • How this working group can trigger new experiments that will shape culture and transport other content producers into a new era.

You can always count on a cartoonist to see things just a little bit differently, and David Fitzsimmons' interpretation of Odyssey's "Mission" theme in February 2017 was no exception. It's hard to put this particular story into words, but if it makes you laugh and cry at the same time, then as Fitzsimmons himself puts it, "Mission accomplished." From David's Odyssey bio: David Wayne Fitzsimmons, known to many as “Fitz”, is the Editorial Cartoonist, and Humor Columnist, for The Arizona Daily Star, where he has worked since 1986, the year Geronimo began working as a paperboy. Fitz is syndicated to over 800 news publications and he also tweets, blogs, posts, pins, whirs and makes other assorted odd noises. When he is not at his drawing board slinging ink or editorials, David is entertaining his audiences, sketching quick sketch cartoons and caricatures.  Known as the “Fastest draw west of the Potomac” Fitz has performed his incoherent easel talks in every conference meeting room, theatre, school, and clubhouse west of the San Pedro. Described as a “Flaming moderate at the fringe of America's center”, Fitz is a snappy dresser who loves reading hate mail from readers and making his kids laugh. This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room in Tucson, AZ, on February 2nd, 2017, and was curated by Molly McCloy. Editorial cartoonists, in the heyday of newspapers, were plentiful. Now the group is down to only 50 nationwide and that number is being threatened by slow extinction. One of the survivors, however, is prize winning cartoonist, columnist, editor and author Jack Ohman of the “Sacramento Bee. “ Currently, his cartoons are syndicated by The Washington Post Writers Group. Previously, his work appeared in 200 newspapers through Tribune Content Agency, and he was, at age 19, the youngest editorial cartoonist ever nationally syndicated. Ohman also worked for “The Columbus Dispatch,” the “Detroit Free Press” and “The Oregonian.” He won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning and was a Pulitzer finalist in 2012 for the “Oregonian” in Portland. Jack talks about the creative process of being a political cartoonist, some of the restrictions and some of the dangers of his profession. Over his long professional career, he has complete about 13,000 finished cartoons – not counting the thousands of sketches and ideas in progress. He gives us a view of how he goes about formulating a cartoon from the germ of the idea that starts the process to the finished product. The subject is central to the success of a cartoon, along with the pithy way of satirizing the situation. The art is secondary to a cartoons success, according to Ohman. He also notes that there are self-restrictions and self-editing placed on cartoonists based upon each artist’s sense of ethics and good taste. Some topics or people are “off-limits” to Ohman but he self-edits those ideas. He does not expect his paper to censor his opinions. Recently, however, “Pittsburgh Post-Gazette” editorial cartoonist Rob Rogers reportedly was fired for being too critical of President Trump and his administration. Ohman also finds it is not difficult to lampoon Washington even from as far away as Sacramento. “Washington is just television now,” Ohman says. He thinks you can cover it well from anywhere. Ohman also talks about his creative foray into creating 3-D cartoons for Virtual Reality for the McClatchy Company, owner of some 29 daily newspapers in 14 states. In addition to the Pulitzer, Ohman has won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award, the SDX Mark of Excellence Award, the National Headliner Award, the Overseas Press Club Award, the Scripps Howard Foundation Award and two first place Best of the West Awards. Ohman also is the winner of “The Minnesota Daily Harrison E. Salisbury Distinguished Alumni Award.”
