Are you tired of posting job ads only to hear crickets… or worse, getting flooded with unqualified applicants who disappear after two shifts? Why does it seem like every other business is poaching the best employees while you're stuck with a revolving door of unreliable hires? And most importantly—what can you do to fix it? What does the future of pet sitting and dog walking look like in a rapidly evolving industry? Collin sits down with four industry leaders—Morgan Weber, Doug Keeling, Michelle Kline, and Daniel Reitman—to talk about the changing landscape of pet care. They explore the challenges of economic uncertainty, competition with tech-driven platforms, and the impact of private equity entering the industry. The conversation highlights the importance of balancing automation with personal relationships, professionalizing businesses, and maintaining strong core values. Ultimately, they all agree that the next 30 years of the industry will be shaped by how pet sitters and dog walkers step up today. Main Topics: Economic uncertainty and industry growth Technology and automation integration Raising professionalism standards Burnout prevention and healthy boundaries Private equity, mergers, and acquisitions Main Takeaways: Michelle Kline “The quickest way to undercut your value is to try to be everything to everyone.” It's tempting to say yes to every client request and to try and be the perfect fit for every pet owner out there. But the truth is, trying to be everything to everyone will drain your time, energy, and resources — and ultimately dilute what makes your business special. The most successful pet care businesses are the ones that know who they are, who they serve best, and what value they bring to that specific group. When you know your ideal client, your marketing gets easier, your systems become clearer, and your value skyrockets. Don't chase everyone. Focus on your people — and serve them exceptionally well. Morgan Weber “Success as a business owner is not tied to your level of burnout or sacrifice.” Let's get one thing clear — burnout is not a badge of honor. In the pet care industry, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the longer you work, the more you sacrifice your personal time, the more successful you are. But real success comes when you build a sustainable business that supports your life — not one that consumes it. You can care deeply for your clients and their pets without sacrificing your health, your family time, or your joy. Boundaries are professional, rest is productive, and saying no is sometimes the best thing you can do for your business. Doug Keeling “We can use technology and automation to enhance relationships — not replace them.” Technology is changing the pet care industry — fast. But the goal isn't to replace human connection with automation. Instead, smart pet sitters are using technology to enhance the client experience. Whether it's using AI to brainstorm gift ideas for clients, automating appointment confirmations, or streamlining admin work so you have more time for personal touches — technology should make your relationships stronger, not weaker. The future of pet care is a mix of high-tech and high-touch, and the businesses that figure out how to balance both will thrive. Daniel Reitman “We're not in the pet care business, we're in the peace of mind business.” At the end of the day, pet parents don't hire you just to feed their pets or take them for a walk. They hire you for the peace of mind that comes with knowing their pets are safe, loved, and cared for — even when they can't be there. When you focus on delivering peace of mind, you stop competing on price and start building unshakable trust. Peace of mind is the product, and exceptional care is how you deliver it. Every visit, every report, every communication is a chance to show your clients they can breathe easy knowing you're there. About our guests: Morgan Weber Morgan Weber is the owner of Lucky Pup Adventures and the host of the Lucky Pup Podcast. Why are some Singapore companies willing to bear the expense to implement pet-care leave as a form of benefit? Synopsis: Every month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at Singapore's social issues of the day with guests. While fewer people are keen on having children, more are becoming pet owners, based on statistics from the Animal and Veterinary Service and an Euromonitor International report. But what happens if you have a full-time job and your pet is sick? Instead of requiring their employees to take urgent leave, some firms in Singapore have begun rolling out pet care leave, for "pawrents" who need to take their furkids to the vet. Only a small number of firms have started implementing it, but the response from employees has so far been overwhelmingly positive. In this episode, ST assistant podcast editor Lynda Hong and her co-host - journalist Aqil Hamzah - ask their two guests whether having a separate leave category the caring of pets is ultimately a good thing, and whether it’d affect the morale of those without pets. The two guests are: Emilyn Ang, founder of public relations and marketing agency Brave Communications, which provides three days of “pawrental” leave a year; and Diane Lee, a senior HR business partner for South-east Asia at recruitment firm Robert Walters. Highlights (click/tap above): 01:34 Considerations behind implementing pet care leave 06:45 Advantages of having pet care leave 09:12 Why employees with no pets shouldn’t feel resentment 14:30 Leave days as an expense, and how firms can balance out the cost 17:30 Are more Singapore firms ready to roll out pet care leave Read ST's Opinion section: https://str.sg/w7sH Read Aqil Hamzah’s articles: https://str.sg/Cc85 Hosts: Lynda Hong (lyndahong@sph.com.sg) and Aqil Hamzah Produced and edited by: Hadyu Rahim Executive producer: Ernest Luis Follow In Your Opinion Podcast here and get notified for new episode drops: Channel: https://str.sg/w7Qt Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/wukb Spotify: https://str.sg/w7sV Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg --- Follow more ST podcast channels: All-in-one ST Podcasts channel: https://str.sg/wvz7 ST Podcast website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts ST Podcasts YouTube: https://str.sg/4Vwsa --- Get The Straits Times' app, which has a dedicated podcast player section: The App Store: https://str.sg/icyB Google Play: https://str.sg/icyX --- #inyouropinionSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Most founders are loath to compare their businesses to other companies. Not the veterinary care startup Modern Animal. "We were definitely inspired by One Medical early on," said Steven Eidelman, founder and CEO of Modern Animal. "I think Tom Lee, the founder, was really a trailblazer for: How do we bring technology into health care?" The idea behind both companies was to add a technological element to health care to make the customer experience more seamless. Eidelman described the core problem with veterinary clinics thus: "As a pet owner, you and I both know the experience we have going into a veterinary clinic. And it's a little bit underwhelming -- to put it nicely, the experience is not really customer-forward." Eidelman joined this week's Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about his company's recent growth and future plans. Modern Animal, which first launched in 2020, tries to make the experience better by building its own clinics, hiring its own veterinary and technical staff, and using technology to make the entire process smoother. For an annual fee, members can get unlimited access to exam visits as well as Modern Animal's telehealth platform. It's currently available in major California and Texas cities, and will be opening new locations in both Colorado and Arizona later this year. "We offer primary preventative care," Eidelman said. "We offer urgent care, and we offer our care digitally. We do dentistry, we do surgery. What we don't do is we don't do after hours," Eidelman said. While the business is health care, Eidelman believes the key to success is thinking about it from a retail perspective. At the end of the day, the core underlying business model that we are building has not really ever been built in the veterinary industry," he said. "And that is: we are building a retail footprint, a sort of box-driven business."
