In this special episode, recorded ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election, WVBR's News Department sits down with former CNBC Senior Producer Peter Schacknow to discuss how the economy might have an effect on the election. Peter Schacknow served as Senior Producer at CNBC's Breaking News Desk beginning in March 2006, producing breaking news stories for the daytime shows as well as serving as writer and copy editor for CNBC's flagship morning show “Squawk Box.” He also wrote and voiced weekend features for CNBC Radio. In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, Josh, Tom, and Ryan explore new gender/dating norms. We focus on a recently published editorial in the New York Times that argues the advances women have made in education, income, and independence have resulted in men feeling confused about how they are supposed to interact with women and how to be a "man." Women in the US increasingly have more education than men. They are also more likely to be homeowners and some are making more money than men. Dating norms have grown rather complicated, with highly successful men being in a position to pick and choose among partners while less successful men are being marginalized and forced out of the dating market entirely. The result is a growing number of men who are frustrated, lonely, and angry. Josh and, to some degree, Tom attribute this to progressive approaches that have argued that men and women are the same and should be treated the same. Josh and Tom agree that men and women should be equal and have equal opportunities, but they also argue that men and women are different and have different motivations, wants, and needs. Ryan agrees that there are some meaningful differences between men and women but tries to soften the magnitude of the differences and make it more of a distribution rather than a dichotomy. We ultimately conclude that current dating norms are challenging and causing problems, though we don't really have a solution.

This week's episode of then & now is the second in a series exploring the historical backdrop to and consequences of the 2024 election. Joining us are Raphael Sonenshein, a nationally recognized expert on racial and ethnic politics in California and Los Angeles, and Zev Yaroslavsky, one of Los Angeles's best-known public officials. This episode begins by continuing the discussion of historical trendlines on the national level and then moves into an analysis of key developments at the California state, county, and city levels. To understand these developments, Raphe Sonenshein cautions against becoming victims of presentism and instead puts these developments into a global context. Citing factors including race, culture, and gender, he addresses the phenomenon of incumbent parties continuing to suffer defeats in elections worldwide. Zev continues by commenting on voter turnout, the shift in California politics, and examines what democracy will look like four years from now in the wake of efforts to suppress voter turnout. While noting the impossibility of knowing exactly what will happen over the next four years on a national level, they discuss the importance of local government solving city-level problems, much of which relies upon a fiscal partnership with the federal government. Raphael Sonenshein is the Executive Director of the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation. Previously, he served as the Executive Director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State LA. His book Politics in Black and White: Race and Power in Los Angeles (Princeton, 1993) won the American Political Science Association's 1994 Ralph J. Bunche Award. Zev Yaroslavsky is the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Initiative at the Luskin School of Public Affairs. He served as LA City Council Member from 1975 to 1994, and as LA County Supervisor from 1994 to 2014. In his recently released memoir, Zev's Los Angeles: From Boyle Heights to the Halls of Power, Zev reflects on his long career in politics.

Patrice speaks passionately this week about maintaining a vision that bridges political divides following the 2024 U.S. election. Listeners can expect an inspiring discussion on utilizing the six pillars of wealth to uphold and nurture visions through challenging times. Drawing lessons from historical figures like Nehemiah, Patrice highlights the persistence and resilience necessary for purpose-driven work. She also shares insights into the importance of mental and emotional health as a foundation for achieving personal and societal ambitions and encourages a collective approach to overcoming challenges, stressing the power of community and support systems. As visions take shape, Patrice invites everyone to question and understand their beliefs, ultimately aiming to foster a robust, faith-anchored approach to life's purpose! Questions to Ask Yourself: How does your vision align with your current values and beliefs, and how can you refine it to transcend political and social divides? Are you using the six pillars of wealth to genuinely protect and nurture your vision, especially during times of uncertainty? In what ways are you allowing mental or emotional fatigue to hinder your resilience and commitment to your vision? How can you take collective action with like-hearted individuals to strengthen and manifest your vision more effectively? Does your current digital and physical spaces reflect and support the clarity and organization needed for your vision, or do they require decluttering? How deeply have you examined your beliefs and faith, and are you prepared to redefine them if they no longer align with your true vision and purpose?   Resources Mentioned: The Institute for Redefining Wealth Mastery + Momentum How to Redefine Wealth for Yourself

How Democrats Lost The 2024 Presidential Election By Alienating Men Driving Them To Trump https://amzn.to/46cj7NT About the Guest(s): Mark W. Sutton is a recognized expert in political analysis and voter behavior with a particular focus on male voters. He has dedicated over 35 years to advocating for male wellbeing and has been a registered Democrat, contributing content to prominent platforms like NPR, Air America Radio, and the Mother Jones Radio Show. Sutton is an advocate for male issues and has hosted the podcast "Liberal Arts with Mark Sutton." He has appeared on major media outlets such as MSNBC and CBS Radio, further cementing his status as a thought leader in gender-focused political strategy. He is the author of "How Democrats Can Win Back Men: Why Understanding Voters and Their Issues is Vital for Democrat Victory." Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of The Chris Voss Show, Chris Voss talks with Mark W. Sutton, the insightful author of "How Democrats Can Win Back Men," as they examine the aftermath of a significant electoral defeat for the Democratic Party. The conversation delves into the critical gender voting gap that has emerged over the decades and focuses on how men have increasingly shifted their political support towards the Republican Party. With provocative insights and a wealth of historical data, Sutton sheds light on the unaddressed needs of male voters and how the Democrats' failure to recognize these issues led to their recent electoral losses. Throughout the episode, Sutton and Voss explore the complex dynamics of voter behavior, examining how messaging and policy approaches have disconnected many men from the Democratic Party. As Sutton presents his compelling analysis, he emphasizes the necessity for the party to understand and address male concerns to regain their support. The conversation also touches upon cultural phenomena such as the masculinity movement and societal narratives that have further polarized gender roles and party allegiance. Sutton leaves the audience with a critical message on the importance of inclusivity and the dangers that lie in ignoring half the electorate. Key Takeaways: The Democratic Party's failure to acknowledge and address male voter issues has led to a significant gender gap in voting patterns. Historical data shows that whenever Democrats fare worse than an 8% deficit among male voters, they lose elections. Sutton criticizes the Democratic Party for its messaging failures and lack of focus on male issues in platforms and policies. The conversation highlights the cultural divide exacerbating political differences between genders, driven by societal shifts and misinformation. Acknowledging and incorporating male-focused policies can be essential for democratic victories in future elections. Notable Quotes: "Every time they have been worse than minus 8% among men, they have lost." – Mark W. Sutton "Men and women's fates are always tied together, biologically and socially." – Mark W. Sutton "The imaging part and the messaging part are where the Democrats fell short this election." – Mark W. Sutton "We're tied together as men and women, and our success depends on unity, not division." – Chris Voss "If men are like, wow, there's not enough jobs for me, they feel like they're being discriminated against." – Mark W.
