When a child is diagnosed with an oral restriction, such as a tongue tie, there is often a lot of pressure to get a frenectomy done as soon as possible.Parents are told that if they don't do a frenectomy, their child will have issues down the road with breastfeeding, solids, sleep apnea, etc. But many parents aren't given the time or resources to explore other options of care.So the question is: what can be done holistically to help address oral restrictions and breastfeeding problems - whether it's instead of doing a frenectomy, or in addition to doing one? This episode explores the answer to that question as Jordan speaks with Midline Revolution - a group that combines chiropractic care, myofascial cranial therapy, and lactation consultation to help mothers and babies navigate issues like oral restrictions and breastfeeding in the first year of life.Together, they explore how to holistically treat tongue and lip ties.Tune in to learn:What an oral restriction isWhy a lot of medical advice is heavily focused on immediately doing a frenectomy and why might this not be the best first solutionHolistic approaches to dealing with oral restrictionsWhy many people aren't getting the outcomes they want from a frenectomyHow information overload is impacting motherhood and the decisions we makeWhat can be done to holistically support someone who has already gotten a frenectomyWant to dig deeper into this episode? Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.22.537940v1?rss=1 Authors: Du, Y. K., Liang, M., McAvan, A. S., Wilson, R. C., Ekstrom, A. D. Abstract: Previous research has demonstrated that humans combine multiple sources of spatial information, such as allothetic and idiothetic cues, while navigating through an environment. However, it is unclear whether this involves comparing multiple representations from multiple sources during encoding (parallel hypothesis) or primarily accumulating idiothetic information until the end of the navigation to integrate with allothetic information (serial hypothesis). We tested these two hypotheses in an active navigation task using mobile scalp EEG recordings. Participants walked through an immersive virtual hallway with or without conflicts between allothetic and idiothetic cues and pointed toward the starting position of the hallway. By analyzing the scalp oscillatory activities during the navigation phase, we found that path segments including memory anchors -- such as path intersections -- were more strongly associated with the pointing error, regardless of when they appeared during encoding. This indicates that the integration of spatial information of a walked path likely begins in the early stages of navigation rather in late stages alone, supporting the parallel hypothesis. Furthermore, theta oscillations in frontal-midline regions during active navigation were related to memory of the path rather than only movement through the path, supporting a mnemonic role of theta oscillations. In this episode, Lyn interviews Etienne Peirsman who shares his story of being in almost complete kidney failure after a staph infection. He talks about his near death experience and how stillness and listening to his intution allowed his body to heal itself. We also dove into what craniosacral is (I highly recommend it!), why it is an important modality to support healing, and the importance of touch in our health and healing.   About Etienne: Highly inspirational and respected teacher in the field of CranioSacral, Etienne Peirsman came to Cranio in a non-traditional fashion. After a a staph infection left him with nearly 20% kidney function, he found that preparing to die brought him the clarity of total silence. In a remarkable turn of events, he was able to heal his own body, which led him to travel to the Osho International Meditation Center, where he was first introduced to Cranio, during an immersive meditation and bodywork training. Etienne describes Cranio as the the closest thing to that wonderful silence he found during his near death experience, and from that time, 31 years ago, it became his life's passion. His journey led him first to apprentice at the Upledger Institute in Florida, then teach at Bastyr University in Washington and the New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts. He is the founder of Peirsman Cranio as well as the CranioSacraal Therapie Academy in Holland, where he originated the CranioSacral Professional Organization and is an honorary member of The Dutch CranioSacral Practitioner Society. Author of the pioneering book, "Craniosacral Therapy for Babies and Small Children" published by Penguin Random House, Etienne is about to publish his second book "Tantric Aspects of CranioSacral". It is truly a unique experience to learn Cranio from such a passionate, talented teacher who infuses his classes with good humor and a deep dive into stillness. He strives to use simple language that engages our spontaneity. His methods are the middle ground between biomechanics Upledger style and biodynamic Sutherland style. In his classes, students learn to start from a no-mind space, a place where the mind can take a vacation, allowing their practice to unfold in non-duality, or what he calls the Midline. He emphasizes the power of touch to stimulate the secretion of oxytocin, a hormone that brings a feeling of oneness and values clarity as the result of being in touch with that Midline that connects us with our life-force, our true and infinite potential. Etienne travels the world with his life partner Toshiko, teaching where he is invited to share this opportunity of radical self transformation. He is also launching his first ever online class, that will have fascinating lectures and detailed instruction on all the hand placements, as a resource for students to learn and enjoy Cranio.   To connect with Etienne and his work: PEIRSMANCRANIOSACRAL https://www.peirsmancraniosacral.com/ FIRST CRANIO BASICS ONLINE MASTERCLASS https://www.peirsmancranio.com/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/peirsmancranio INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/peirsmancranio/ YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-C3go34Mi09AKH95A_z_eg LINKEDIN https://www.linkedin.com/in/etienne-peirsman-b7713a257/ PINTEREST https://www.pinterest.com/Peirsmancranio/ TWITTER https://twitter.com/Peirsmancranio TIKTOK https://www.tiktok.com/@peirsmancranio?lang=en

#250 Etienne Peirsman shared his journey studying cranial sacral therapy and his spiritual awakening, a near-death experience. He had a staph infection in his late 30's, which served as a wake-up call for him to make drastic changes in his life. He expressed gratitude for the bacteria for helping him realize this and has since invited it into his body to help him grow. Etienne was asked what he was doing before the staph infection and what it is. Staph infection is a bacterial infection that can be caused by skin contact, cuts, or wounds. It can cause symptoms such as rashes, swelling, and pus-filled blisters. Etienne discussed his journey with a staph infection which was self-inflicted through dirty water. He was a junkie and was using drugs as an escape from his upbringing in a strict school environment. The staph infection was a gradual decline in health, with the person noticing a sudden lack of energy and then the infection invading the heart, kidneys, and other parts of the body. The bacteria were simply looking for food and the person eventually had to be hospitalized due to the severity of the infection. He reflected on his journey towards a healthier lifestyle and the importance of taking care of one's health. Etienne described his experience with kidney failure due to drug use. He was in a state of panic, not recognizing his own body or face. He was taken to a rehab center and asked what they could do. In a moment of desperation, he requested a room to meditate. After 30 minutes, he experienced a click, a clarity that he had lived the life he wanted to and that it was okay. This clarity lasted for over a year, and the mind slowly started to come back. About Etienne: Etienne Peirsman came to Cranio in a non-traditional fashion. After a staph infection left him with nearly 20% kidney function, he found that preparing to die brought him the clarity of total silence. Etienne Peirsman shares his story of how he got into Cranial Sacral Therapy, which included his own experience of self-healing and a miraculous healing of a friend. He also discussed the importance of intuitive healing and the power of Cranial Sacral Therapy to diagnose and heal. Etienne Peirsman discussed how stem cells are connected to the universal intelligence and don't think, but know what to do. He shares a story of a student and friend who were both paralyzed and were able to walk and talk again after a few craniosacral sessions. He also shares a story of a seven year old dyslexic boy who was able to read again after a few minutes of connecting to the life force. Etienne Peirsman teaches people with no knowledge of the body how to access their intuition and use conscious touch to bring instant mindfulness. He also teaches an intensive program where students go through nine courses to learn cranial therapy and deal with their own issues. He guides them through the process and helps them access the life force and release emotions. He also has online courses available, which I definitely want to attend! Check out his courses here: www.peirsmancranio.com/course/basics Etienne's Bio: Highly inspirational and respected teacher in the field of CranioSacral, Etienne Peirsman came to Cranio in a non-traditional fashion.

W., Banks, A. S., Ye, L. Abstract: Maintaining body temperature is calorically expensive for endothermic animals. Mammals eat more in the cold to compensate for energy expenditure, but the neural mechanism underlying this coupling is not well understood. Through behavioral and metabolic analyses, we found that mice dynamically switch between energy conservation and food-seeking states in the cold, the latter of which is primarily driven by energy expenditure rather than the sensation of cold. To identify the neural mechanisms underlying cold-induced food seeking, we use whole-brain cFos mapping and found that the xiphoid (Xi), a small nucleus in the midline thalamus, was selectively activated by prolonged cold associated with elevated energy expenditure but not with acute cold exposure. In vivo calcium imaging showed that Xi activity correlates with food-seeking episodes in cold conditions. Using activity-dependent viral strategies, we found that optogenetic and chemogenetic stimulation of cold-activated Xi neurons recapitulated cold-induced feeding, whereas their inhibition suppressed it. Mechanistically, Xi encodes a context-dependent valence switch promoting food-seeking behaviors in cold but not warm conditions. Furthermore, these behaviors are mediated by a Xi to nucleus accumbens projection. Our results establish Xi as a key region for controlling cold-induced feeding, an important mechanism for maintaining energy homeostasis in endothermic animals. R., Keough, M. B., Xu, H., Su, M., Quezada, M. A., Woo, P. J., Fisher, P. G., Campen, C. J., Partap, S., Koschmann, C., Monje, M. Abstract: Pediatric high-grade gliomas are the leading cause of brain cancer-related death in children. High-grade gliomas include clinically and molecularly distinct subtypes that stratify by anatomical location into diffuse midline gliomas (DMG) such as diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) and hemispheric high-grade gliomas. Neuronal activity drives high-grade glioma progression both through paracrine signaling(1,2) and direct neuron-to-glioma synapses(3-5). Glutamatergic, AMPA receptor-dependent synapses between neurons and malignant glioma cells have been demonstrated in both pediatric(3) and adult high-grade gliomas(4), but neuron-to-glioma synapses mediated by other neurotransmitters remain largely unexplored. Using whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology, in vivo optogenetics and patient-derived glioma xenograft models, we have now identified functional, tumor-promoting GABAergic neuron-to-glioma synapses mediated by GABAA receptors in DMGs. GABAergic input has a depolarizing effect on DMG cells due to NKCC1 expression and consequently elevated intracellular chloride concentration in DMG tumor cells. As membrane depolarization increases glioma proliferation(3), we find that the activity of GABAergic interneurons promotes DMG proliferation in vivo. Increasing GABA signaling with the benzodiazepine lorazepam, a positive allosteric modulator of GABAA receptors commonly administered to children with DMG for nausea or anxiety, increases GABAA receptor conductance and increases glioma proliferation in orthotopic xenograft models of DMG. Conversely, levetiracetam, an anti-epileptic drug that attenuates GABAergic neuron-to-glioma synaptic currents, reduces glioma proliferation in patient-derived DMG xenografts and extends survival of mice bearing DMG xenografts. Concordant with gene expression patterns of GABAA receptor subunit genes across subtypes of glioma, depolarizing GABAergic currents were not found in hemispheric high-grade gliomas. Accordingly, neither lorazepam nor levetiracetam influenced the growth rate of hemispheric high-grade glioma patient-derived xenograft models. Retrospective real-world clinical data are consistent with these conclusions and should be replicated in future prospective clinical studies. Taken together, these findings uncover GABAergic synaptic communication between GABAergic interneurons and diffuse midline glioma cells, underscoring a tumor subtype-specific mechanism of brain cancer neurophysiology with important potential implications for commonly used drugs in this disease context.
