LAFC took on English powerhouse Chelsea in the 2025 Club World Cup. That's the headline. A match so important that Filly & Scarf brought on two special guests, Laff and lifelong Chelsea AND all-time Black and Gold supporter Slippy on the pod to talk about it. LAFC would fall, 2-0, but the effort, the heart, and the support were absolutely there for all 90'. Not the result we wanted, but the boys did us proud. It's Episode 365, which means you can listen to a new episode every day for a year!

Decoder Ring is marking its 100th episode this year. To celebrate, we're revisiting our very first episode from 2018, which asks: What happened to the laugh track? For nearly five decades, the laugh track was ubiquitous, but beginning in the early 2000s, it fell out of sitcom fashion. What happened? How did we get from The Beverly Hillbillies to 30 Rock? In this episode we meet the man who created the laugh track, which originated as a homemade piece of technology, and trace that technology's fall and the rise of a more modern idea about humor. With the help of historians, laugh track obsessives, the showrunners of One Day at a Time and the director of Sports Night, this episode asks if the laugh track was about something bigger than laughter. LAFC gets its most convincing win of the season against their rivals from the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Sounders. With Scarf still in Georgia, Filly and Laff give you the breakdown while also taking some liberties and having some fun.
LAFC gets set for a bit of a respite, with just 5 matches in their next 30 days, beginning with a home match against the Earthquakes. Scarf and Laff break down the Players to Watch, explore their Keys to the Match, and look into their crystal balls (giggity) for their Score Predictions!
It's Episode 354, and it's a collapse of epic proportions, as LAFC goes to Miami, takes a 2-0 aggregate lead WITH the tiebreaker, only to squander it all away, losing 3-1 to Messi and Inter Miami and crashing out of the 2025 CCC. Ugh.Things looked great for the Black and Gold early, as captain Aaron Long reported for duty, scoring a chaotic 9' goal to give the boys an early lead, and the tiebreaker. That's about where the good news ends. Miami scores three unanswered, including two from Lionel Messi. Denis Bouanga missed or squandered a series of great chances, including one in second-half stoppage, and that proved to be the undoing for LAFC in the CCC. SEVEN, yes, seven big chances missed for LAFC. Miami wins the match, 3-1, and wins the aggregate, 3-2, to advance to the semis. Also on this match, Scarf is back from Costa Rica, Filly suffers no fools lightly when it comes to Dolo out, and Laff harkens back to his LAFC debut as part of This Date In LAFC History. Enjoy 354!
LAFC traveled to Children's Mercy Park and showed no mercy to Sporting, taking out the home side, 2-0. Goals from David Martinez and Aaron Long, excellent defending, and two big saves by Hugo Lloris punctuated the win. Also on Episode 350, Odin Holm and Adrian Wibowo make their LAFC debuts, LAFF needs to be reminded it's an LA podcast, and apparently, Scarf was a member of the Open Cup broadcast team for LAFC2's win over FC Arizona. Enjoy 350, and here's to 350 more!
It's Episode 348, and it's a roller coaster! LAFC gets dominated for the better part of 90', only to have our new DP, Cengiz Ünder, come off the bench on his debut, streak through the middle of the pitch to intercept an errant Crew pass, and find Denis Bouanga at the death to put the nail in the Crew's CCC coffin. Sure, LAFC lost, 2-1, but there is momentum to be had! Also on this episode, Laff tells a story (it may still be going on), Scarf thinks he's clever, and Filly... ugh... Filly was right. About what, you ask? Tune in to 348 to find out!
Higher education institutions continue to struggle with student retention, career readiness, and underemployment among graduates. Traditional college advising models focus heavily on selecting a major, yet many students graduate with empty degrees that fail to translate into meaningful careers. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Scott Carlson and Dr. Ned Scott Laff, authors of Hacking College: Why the Major Really Doesn't Matter and What Really Does, about how institutions can rethink academic advising, faculty engagement, and student success strategies to better serve today's learners. Carlson, a senior writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Laff, who has over 35 years of experience in college and university settings helping students design successful undergraduate experiences, discuss how universities can shift away from a rigid, major-centric model to a personalized student success framework. They explain how students who lack career clarity often end up in underemployment, taking jobs unrelated to their degrees. Their research shows that institutions must evolve their advising structures to help students identify vocational purpose, leverage experiential learning, and navigate the hidden job market. The Problem with Traditional Academic Advising The outdated focus on major selection leads students into rigid career paths, often misaligned with their strengths and interests. A one-size-fits-all advising model leaves first-generation and low-income students struggling to navigate the complexities of higher education. Limited faculty-student engagement prevents students from leveraging university resources and professional networks. Lack of career-aligned experiential learning results in students graduating without the necessary skills and industry connections. Revolutionizing College-to-Career Transition Carlson and Laff propose a new model where higher education leaders integrate career-focused advising and faculty mentorship into the student experience. This involves: Helping students explore hidden intellectualism—their deeper interests and skills that could shape their career trajectories. Connecting students with faculty and industry professionals to uncover career pathways beyond traditional job titles. Expanding experiential learning opportunities through internships, mentorships, and project-based learning. Teaching students to research the hidden job market to discover roles they might never encounter through a standard career fair. Institutional Strategies for Student Success For university presidents, boards, and executive leaders, improving student outcomes requires a fundamental shift in how advising and faculty engagement are structured. Institutions should: Encourage faculty to act as mentors, guiding students beyond coursework to explore real-world career applications. Train advisors to support students in creating flexible, goal-oriented academic plans that integrate experiential learning. Strengthen career services by building industry partnerships and embedding career readiness into academic programming. Utilize existing institutional resources—including government affairs, research opportunities, and alumni networks—to connect students with career pathways. The Hidden Job Market and Career Readiness Career exploration should begin early in a student's academic journey. Institutions must help students develop the ability to recognize opportunities beyond traditional job titles by: Encouraging proactive networking with faculty, professionals, and industry leaders. Teaching students to research and navigate the hidden job market, where many opportunities exist outside of standard recruitment channels. Expanding experiential learning options, such as internships and project-based coursework, to provide practical experience that aligns with evolving workforce demands. With AI-driven automation threatening traditional advising roles, institutions must act now to redefine how they support student career pathways. Colleges that fail to adapt will continue to see declining retention, underemployment, and dissatisfaction among graduates. Five Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Be Open to Change – Institutions must actively remove barriers that prevent student success. The current advising model is failing many students, and colleges need to adopt a more flexible, student-centered approach that helps learners navigate their academic and career paths effectively. Preserve Academic Variety – Colleges are eliminating liberal arts programs due to financial pressures, but this limits students' ability to create multidisciplinary educational experiences. Institutions should strive to maintain a diverse academic landscape that allows students to explore various career pathways. Engage Directly with Students – University leaders should make an effort to understand student concerns firsthand. By informally engaging with students—whether in common areas or casual settings—presidents and board members can gain valuable insights into what students need to thrive. Empower Students to Take Ownership of Their Education – Instead of following rigid degree structures, students should be encouraged to design their own academic experiences by integrating coursework, experiential learning, and industry engagement in ways that align with their career goals. Advisors and faculty should support this by shifting from a prescriptive model to one that helps students think critically about their education. Rethink Institutional Priorities – Colleges can maintain their research and tenure agendas while also fostering a culture that encourages student success. Leaders should create systems that help students perceive higher education as an interconnected network of opportunities rather than a series of disconnected courses. Higher education institutions that fail to evolve will continue to see declining retention and job placement rates. Listen in as Dr. Drumm McNaughton, Scott Carlson, and Dr. Ned Laff explore how colleges can implement meaningful advising reforms to improve student success, institutional sustainability, and long-term career outcomes. Institutions looking for solutions to align their academic programs with evolving student needs should explore Academic Realignment and Redesign strategies. Bold and bawdy, for a time in the 1970's LaWanda Page was the Queen of Comedy -- at least the type featured on numerous x-rated "party records". From early days as a "Fire Dancer", LaWanda worked the "chitlin' circuit" of clubs in the south, developing her standup act and developing friendships with other comics including Redd Foxx. After issuing a number of naughty albums on the Laff label, LaWanda got a call from Redd asking her to join the cast of his new sitcom Sanford and Son". She said yes, and the producer blew a gasket because her acting skills were at best limited. Redd famously said "if she goes, I go" and the rest is sitcom history. So take yourself back to the days when you would put on certain records "after the kids go to bed" and have a laugh with LaWanda, The Queen of Comedy. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more LaWanda? Most of LaWanda's albums are very NSFW -- though if you want a quick primer in urban slang of the 70s they are a great source. This track is taken from the one mainstream comedy record she did and while the language was toned down, the point was still sharp. https://youtu.be/Evsd1jpiMuQ?si=MzW09WALAqYyVhBn LaWanda's Aunt Esther was a cornerstone of Sanford and Son -- and LaWanda played it to the hilt (as did Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford). Em 1976, um programa de TV visita uma atração chamada Laff in the Dark no parque de diversões Pike Amusement Park, em Long Beach, na Califórnia. Nessa visita eles descobrem que um dos manequins é na verdade um cadáver humano, mas quem foi esse homem?
Laff Parade-1934-xx-xx 0029 1st - Solitude (Martha Raye)
This week it's two terrifying tales about more than meets the eye! First up, Lauren takes you on a ride through the uncanny valley with the “Laff in the Dark” mannequin at the The Pike amusement park. In the early ‘70s, children visiting the boardwalk in Long Beach, California noticed one of the mannequins in the funhouse attraction looked a little…off. But it wasn't until some years later, when a production crew from a popular TV series were shooting in the funhouse in 1976, something more was discovered beneath the surface. How did this grotesque mannequin end up as a set piece in the amusement park ride and where did it come from?! And what was the glow-in-the-dark paint it was covered in actually hiding?! Next, Felicia profiles William H. Mumler - a spirit photographer from the 1800s. People took notice of Mumler's photography when he developed a self-portrait that appeared to feature the ghost of who he claimed was his cousin that had been dead for 12 years! This portrait is believed by many in the paranormal world to be the first spirit photograph ever. But William had both famous clients and famous critics, including infamous flim flam man P.T. Barnum. Listen to hear more about his fascinating work!PS: If you have requests for future episodes or just want to hang out, follow us on Instagram @sinistersisterspodcast

This week on Select 204, we have a special set from Lazuli, an Egyptian party series amplifying the sounds of local rising DJs through its dynamic showcases, from intimate rooftop sessions to different party concepts like Dafunk, Subliminal, Alive and Plan B. Skillfully curated and mixed by Lazuli's residents Ram, Adam, Fady, Xtrakarim and K-Laff, the set will take you on a two-and-a-half-hour wild sonic journey, akin to Lazuli's distinctive parties, all from the comfort of your abode. The set unfurls with a brewing thirty minutes of minimal house beats from Ram featuring tunes like Heimyl's ‘Back's groove' and Madvilla's ‘Orbit'. As we enter the second half of the first hour Fady lures us in with some deep basslines from his ambient soundscapes, before giving way to a high-octane B2B session from Xtrakarim and Adam featuring hard syncopated basslines and some thumbing tunes lke Mole Music's ‘Check Ourself' and Furz's ‘Take Out'. Ending on a high note, the set culminates with K-Laff's sweltering synths and pulsing hit-hats that will take you back to studio 54 (all hip-sways and shoulder-twists included).
It hasn't been a perfect start for #GoKingsGo, but it's been pretty darn good. We break down the first 6 games for the #LAKings and take a moment to have a chuckle about how some OTHER teams have started the season.

Ole Miss hosts recruiting visitors for every home football weekend, regardless of opponent.Lane Kiffin and Co. also share the wealth. The size of the list fluctuates with the schedule, but prospects can always been found on the sidelines prior to kickoff and in a section of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium exclusively reserved for them. Typically mixed in with the four and five-stars and their families are targets for other sports, too, and the defending national champion Rebel baseball team is almost always well-represented. But they won't be there Saturday, when Ole Miss (3-0) hosts Tulsa (2-1) at 3 p.m. CT. Mike Bianco's right-hand men and lead recruiters Mike Clement (hitting coach) and Carl Lafferty (pitching coach) are on the road recruiting in Phoenix, Arizona, and Fort Myers, Florida, respectively. However, a potential Top 12 showdown with Kentucky next week? Count them in.“Tulsa's not as good as Kentucky, so we kind of have to find this balance,” Clement said, in today's edition of Talk of Champions, an Ole Miss-exclusive podcast in association with the Ole Miss Spirit.“Laff and I will both be on the road this weekend. We'll go watch games (of high-school prospects and potential Ole Miss targets). Obviously next weekend is a big weekend (and) kids want to come to campus. It's a balancing act. I've been here eight years now through some really, really good football seasons. Some not-so-good football seasons. “When football is good, man, it's good for everybody. It's good for us, it's good for basketball, the whole deal. The cool thing about Ole Miss is no matter what the football record is, it's a pretty good time to come to campus. “Obviously coach Kiffin has got it rolling. They're really good.”Clement also discussed Baseball America ranking the Rebels' recruiting class No. 2 in the country, the fall intrasquad season opening next week, the plan for two-sport Rebel Tywone Malone and much more.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
