Also ned ausschlieslich des, wassder vo mir erwardd dud. Also meggern. Eichndlich will ich euch verzähl, dass dess für mich alles immer mehr a fremde Weld wird. Also werbål, awer ehm ned blos. Desweechn fang ich edz amål mid denne Neolochismen a. Also als erschdes Beischbiel. Mei fränggischs Owerschdüble is desweeng in derre ledzdn Zeid ganz schö neis schwitzn komm. Awer eds, wos rum iss, kann ich mei neu erlerndes Wissn mid euch deil. Jede Menge neue Wörder habb ich glerrnd. Also echd, ich hald mich ja eichndlich für relladief elogwend. Mid an zimmlich grousn Wordschadz. Drodzdem hädd ich bald a Wörderbuch brauchd. Des wird dann ah gern a weng "ssbeissie", also seggsuell aufglådn. "Häit du Laff" kann a innerer "Forsd Broggsimmidie" vorkomm. Also wenn Leud unner Zwang beinanner sin. Früher hammer des geechn n Willn verheierd gnannd und dass dess scho alles gud werrn wirrd war des dumme Gschmarri vo derre Mudder, der wos früher genauso ganggn is, wo des also eichndlich hädd besser wiss müss. Gsåchd haddse dess aus sonerer Ård fadalisdischer Schigglichkeidshörichkeid. War a schönner Scheiß, wo mir in meiner Generazion eichndlich froh drüwer wårn, dassmer die Zeidn üwerwunne hamm. Heud isses irchndwie seggsie und anscheinend so was wie a verloggende Fandasie. Na ja, wie auch immer. Ich habs verschdanne. "Ennemies to Laffers" is üwrichns im Brinnzibb des gleiche. Also glebb ich. Awer es is nedd immer so bös. Ab und an isses a "kosie" also liebenswerd und innerer Wohlfühlwelld. Oder des ganze is enne "Romm Komm", also a rommandische Kommödie. "Grammbie x grammbie" oder "grammbie sannschein" is nacherd Gschmaggsach. Gibbds a als "Hie foll harrder", also nedd bloos zuerschd, sondern a noch heffdich, beziehungsweise heffdicher. Des nennd mer nacherd "obsessd", also sozmsåch besessen oder zumindessd bruddål fogussierd. Neben den grimminellen Oarschlöchern und feindlichen Desboodn gibbds awer a Hoggeischbieler, Feuerwehrleud, Subberstaars, oder a Leud ausm Hochådl, also "Roiels". "Bewechende Übsilon A Sdorrie", also für junge Erwaxene. Wobei ich mich an derre Schdelle a fraach, wie jung die sein dürffn mid denne bornografischn Inhåldn und gleichzeidich, wie lang mer a junger Erwaxener iss? Dabei fallen denne Werbedexdern Deemen wie "Mendll Hells", "Embauermennd" als Werbeslougen ein. Also ich du mir da in dem Zusammenhang schwer. Was mir auf jedn Fall gloar is, is dass der fast schon putzig anmudende Versuch, einiger konserfadieferer Verlåche, dess ganze serjös zum verbagg, denne hibbn Formulierungen nedd schdaddhald kå. "Ssbeissie Enimies tu Laffers" is eefach vielsåchnder, wie "Zeitgenössische Liebesromane" und ich glebb, dass dess in a boar Jährli a kenner mehr verschdeh wird. Damidd lass ich dess mid denne Neologismen für heud a gud sei. Kommmer amål zur zugegebenermåsn obulendn Obdig. Awer dummerweise hald immer der selbe Schdiel. Nacherd is dess edz obdisch middlerweile ehrlich gsaachd a a Einheidsbrei. Braggdisch is des für mich a enns vo denne Broblemmli. Also bei Dobb Diddln. Dasses hald keinerlei Differnzierung geb dud, is des Brobleem. Heyne had zum Beischbiel a boar echd schönne Glassiger, wo edz a in derre Form rauskomm dun. Weils nacherd besser gling dud? A wenns deudsche Audorinnen sinn? Wennse kä Kadz hamm, nacherd wird weniggsdns a endschbrechnder Bseudonüm gewähld. "Kazi". A noch a schönnes Schdichword. Bseudonüm gibbds nämmlich a a boar drolliche. Meisdenz a english. Und immer schbrechend. Sozumsåch gehm die scho enn Vorgeschmagg off dess, was kommd. HC Dolores. Mei romanische Gundbildung is nämmlich a ned schlechd. Dolor, doloris: der Schmerz. Die lebbd üwrichns miderre eeaachichn Kadz unnem Kordschi zamm, also demm Lieblingshund vo derre Gwien. Ach ja, was mer nedd vergess dürf. Alle mideinand sinn immer und ausschließlich Besdseller Audorinnen. Schbiegel, Niu Jork Daims und was wäss ich. Also zusädslich dazu, dasse Diggdogg Sensäischäischens sin. A wemmer in genau dem Fall vielleichd doch üwern weng glangvolleren Bseudonüm nachdengg solld... Gehd ja. Zum Beischbiel Frau Scharlodde Robinson. Da is eichndlich scho gloar, was die schreim wird. Kim Stänli Robinson könnds Vorbild sei. Also Mars. Robinsonade. Also Ändi Wier. Marsianer. Vielleichd a kindische Drodzaggzion, wo mir eichndlich zum dengg geb solld. Gloar isses mir bewussd, dass des a dumme Drodzreagzion is. Und dass ich damid kä Signal send du. Als Märdürer. An solchn Bunggdn bin ich ned besser, wie die Aluhüd Leud. Dass des in der Endfase vo der Fussball We Emm zwanzichzehn wår. Nach dem Schbiel geechn Archendinien, wo mir die vier zu null weggebiddschd hamm un dass da dann jeder, wo a weng gern innerer Feierlaune is müd und verkaderd dähämm gebliem is. Wird ja ned so weid komm. Doch! Weil alle Schbassbremsn zur Urne gangn sinn. Herr Eibach Graddulazion Herr Frankenberger vo derre ÖDeBe! Herr Eibach! Alles Eiferer! Herr Eibach!!! Sie machen sich lächerlich und verspielen jeglichen Rest an Glaubwürdigkeit und Reputation! Na gud. Eichndlich wolld ich ja blos verglär, dass des bei mir so a Ård Reflex is. Ich wäss scho, dass des ned gechn mich gehd. Dass des Marggdschdraddegien wechn heudichm Kaufverhaldn sin.

This Halloween, jump into the eerie tale of Elmer McCurdy—a true crime deep dive into urban legends and America's carnival underbelly. In 1976, a seemingly innocuous Halloween haunt took a terrifying turn when a “mannequin” on a Long Beach dark ride wasn't a prop—it was a real human corpse. In 1976, a TV crew at The Pike's Laff in the Dark discovered human bone after a stunt arm snapped. Forensics exposed arsenic embalming, a copper bullet jacket, and a 1924 penny with old carnival tickets—breadcrumbs that led to Elmer McCurdy, a bungling Oklahoma train robber killed in 1911. For more than six decades, his body was bought, sold, and exhibited in sideshows and roadside museums, then misfiled as a prop and hung on a ride—until investigators finally confirmed the truth and laid him to rest under concrete in Guthrie (1977).This is a true-crime deep dive into America's carnival underbelly, the commodification of death, and how an outlaw became the Funhouse Mummy.Inside this episode:The 1976 discovery at The Pike: the moment the “dummy” bled clues—arsenic, bullet jacket, 1924 penny, tickets.McCurdy's final heist (1911): the botched robbery, the posse's shot, and an undertaker who wouldn't release the body. The carnival con: how promoters “claimed” the corpse and rebranded it coast-to-coast for decades.Forensic ID & burial (1977): the paper trail that ended with concrete sealing a grave in Guthrie, Oklahoma.Ethics & aftermath: why outlaw mummies vanished—and what the case says about spectacle vs. dignity. If you're searching funhouse mummy, Elmer McCurdy, Long Beach funhouse corpse, The Pike Laff in the Dark, outlaw mummy Oklahoma, arsenic embalming, sideshow history, or a true crime podcast about real “haunted” carnivals, this episode is your map. In 1877, the first college "major" was coined at Johns Hopkins. The catalog for that year is a dense read, though short; courses toward the baccalaureate only required two years of study and then—presumably—a job. That catalog has hardened into something else today: a system that prizes credentials over curiosity, standardization over discovery, and completion over connection. In this episode, we sit down with Ned Laff and Scott Carlson, co-authors of Hacking College, and our own higher education strategist Howard Teibel, to ask a simple but urgent question: what are we really preparing students for? Drawing on decades of experience in academic affairs, journalism, and institutional change, our guests lay out an alternative framework—the “Field of Study”—that puts students back at the center of their education. We talk about advising as design instead of compliance, about pilot programs that quietly rewire entire universities, and about the faculty and leadership required to shift the system without burning it down. And we hear stories—personal, institutional, and philosophical—of what happens when students reclaim the blank spaces of their education and begin to connect the dots on their own terms. This is a conversation about possibility. And about how, even in the face of inertia, the path forward is already being built—one desire path at a time.We explore... Why the traditional college major no longer matches real-world workThe Field of Study framework: structure, stories, and student agencyHow advising can shift from checklist to compassInstitutional inertia and the myth of undecided studentsWhy reform doesn't have to mean top-down revolutionThe hidden job market and student-designed experiencesWhat happens when we reintroduce joy, risk, and meaning into higher edLinks & ResourcesHacking College by Ned Laff & Scott CarlsonScott Carlson at The Chronicle of Higher EducationNed Laff at The Chronicle of Higher Education

Decoder Ring is marking its 100th episode this year. To celebrate, we're revisiting our very first episode from 2018, which asks: What happened to the laugh track? For nearly five decades, the laugh track was ubiquitous, but beginning in the early 2000s, it fell out of sitcom fashion. What happened? How did we get from The Beverly Hillbillies to 30 Rock? In this episode we meet the man who created the laugh track, which originated as a homemade piece of technology, and trace that technology's fall and the rise of a more modern idea about humor. With the help of historians, laugh track obsessives, the showrunners of One Day at a Time and the director of Sports Night, this episode asks if the laugh track was about something bigger than laughter. You can read more in Willa's article “The Man Who Perfected the Laugh Track” in Slate.Links and further reading on some of the things we discussed on the show: Interview with Ben Glenn II on the history of the laugh track in McSweeney's See a Charlie Douglas Laff Box on Antiques Roadshow More of Paul Iverson's work restoring laugh tracks and inserting them into new shows The sitcom One Day at a Time Friends without a Laugh Track by Sboss “The Okeh Laughing Record” Tommy Schlamme and Aaron Sorkin's Sports NightThis episode was written by Willa Paskin. You can read more in Willa's article “The Man Who Perfected the Laugh Track” in Slate. Links and further reading on some of the things we discussed on the show: Interview with Ben Glenn II on the history of the laugh track in McSweeney's See a Charlie Douglas Laff Box on Antiques Roadshow More of Paul Iverson's work restoring laugh tracks and inserting them into new shows The sitcom One Day at a Time Friends without a Laugh Track by Sboss “The Okeh Laughing Record” Tommy Schlamme and Aaron Sorkin's Sports Night This episode was written by Willa Paskin. It was produced and edited by Benjamin Frisch, who also created the episode art. Decoder Ring is produced by Katie Shepherd, Max Freedman, and our supervising producer Evan Chung. It's Episode 354, and it's a collapse of epic proportions, as LAFC goes to Miami, takes a 2-0 aggregate lead WITH the tiebreaker, only to squander it all away, losing 3-1 to Messi and Inter Miami and crashing out of the 2025 CCC. Ugh.Things looked great for the Black and Gold early, as captain Aaron Long reported for duty, scoring a chaotic 9' goal to give the boys an early lead, and the tiebreaker. That's about where the good news ends. Miami scores three unanswered, including two from Lionel Messi. Denis Bouanga missed or squandered a series of great chances, including one in second-half stoppage, and that proved to be the undoing for LAFC in the CCC. SEVEN, yes, seven big chances missed for LAFC. Miami wins the match, 3-1, and wins the aggregate, 3-2, to advance to the semis. Also on this match, Scarf is back from Costa Rica, Filly suffers no fools lightly when it comes to Dolo out, and Laff harkens back to his LAFC debut as part of This Date In LAFC History. Changing Higher Ed
Transforming College Advising: A New Approach to Student Success

Changing Higher Ed

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 42:22

Higher education institutions continue to struggle with student retention, career readiness, and underemployment among graduates. Traditional college advising models focus heavily on selecting a major, yet many students graduate with empty degrees that fail to translate into meaningful careers. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Scott Carlson and Dr. Ned Scott Laff, authors of Hacking College: Why the Major Really Doesn't Matter and What Really Does, about how institutions can rethink academic advising, faculty engagement, and student success strategies to better serve today's learners. Carlson, a senior writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Laff, who has over 35 years of experience in college and university settings helping students design successful undergraduate experiences, discuss how universities can shift away from a rigid, major-centric model to a personalized student success framework. They explain how students who lack career clarity often end up in underemployment, taking jobs unrelated to their degrees. Their research shows that institutions must evolve their advising structures to help students identify vocational purpose, leverage experiential learning, and navigate the hidden job market. The Problem with Traditional Academic Advising The outdated focus on major selection leads students into rigid career paths, often misaligned with their strengths and interests. A one-size-fits-all advising model leaves first-generation and low-income students struggling to navigate the complexities of higher education. Limited faculty-student engagement prevents students from leveraging university resources and professional networks. Lack of career-aligned experiential learning results in students graduating without the necessary skills and industry connections. Revolutionizing College-to-Career Transition Carlson and Laff propose a new model where higher education leaders integrate career-focused advising and faculty mentorship into the student experience. This involves: Helping students explore hidden intellectualism—their deeper interests and skills that could shape their career trajectories. Connecting students with faculty and industry professionals to uncover career pathways beyond traditional job titles. Expanding experiential learning opportunities through internships, mentorships, and project-based learning. Teaching students to research the hidden job market to discover roles they might never encounter through a standard career fair. Institutional Strategies for Student Success For university presidents, boards, and executive leaders, improving student outcomes requires a fundamental shift in how advising and faculty engagement are structured. Institutions should: Encourage faculty to act as mentors, guiding students beyond coursework to explore real-world career applications. Train advisors to support students in creating flexible, goal-oriented academic plans that integrate experiential learning. Strengthen career services by building industry partnerships and embedding career readiness into academic programming. Utilize existing institutional resources—including government affairs, research opportunities, and alumni networks—to connect students with career pathways. The Hidden Job Market and Career Readiness Career exploration should begin early in a student's academic journey. Institutions must help students develop the ability to recognize opportunities beyond traditional job titles by: Encouraging proactive networking with faculty, professionals, and industry leaders. Teaching students to research and navigate the hidden job market, where many opportunities exist outside of standard recruitment channels. Expanding experiential learning options, such as internships and project-based coursework, to provide practical experience that aligns with evolving workforce demands. With AI-driven automation threatening traditional advising roles, institutions must act now to redefine how they support student career pathways. Colleges that fail to adapt will continue to see declining retention, underemployment, and dissatisfaction among graduates. Five Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Be Open to Change – Institutions must actively remove barriers that prevent student success. The current advising model is failing many students, and colleges need to adopt a more flexible, student-centered approach that helps learners navigate their academic and career paths effectively. Preserve Academic Variety – Colleges are eliminating liberal arts programs due to financial pressures, but this limits students' ability to create multidisciplinary educational experiences. Institutions should strive to maintain a diverse academic landscape that allows students to explore various career pathways. Engage Directly with Students – University leaders should make an effort to understand student concerns firsthand. By informally engaging with students—whether in common areas or casual settings—presidents and board members can gain valuable insights into what students need to thrive. Empower Students to Take Ownership of Their Education – Instead of following rigid degree structures, students should be encouraged to design their own academic experiences by integrating coursework, experiential learning, and industry engagement in ways that align with their career goals. Advisors and faculty should support this by shifting from a prescriptive model to one that helps students think critically about their education. Rethink Institutional Priorities – Colleges can maintain their research and tenure agendas while also fostering a culture that encourages student success. Leaders should create systems that help students perceive higher education as an interconnected network of opportunities rather than a series of disconnected courses. Higher education institutions that fail to evolve will continue to see declining retention and job placement rates. Listen in as Dr. Drumm McNaughton, Scott Carlson, and Dr. Ned Laff explore how colleges can implement meaningful advising reforms to improve student success, institutional sustainability, and long-term career outcomes. Institutions looking for solutions to align their academic programs with evolving student needs should explore Academic Realignment and Redesign strategies. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Bold and bawdy, for a time in the 1970's LaWanda Page was the Queen of Comedy -- at least the type featured on numerous x-rated "party records". From early days as a "Fire Dancer", LaWanda worked the "chitlin' circuit" of clubs in the south, developing her standup act and developing friendships with other comics including Redd Foxx. After issuing a number of naughty albums on the Laff label, LaWanda got a call from Redd asking her to join the cast of his new sitcom Sanford and Son". She said yes, and the producer blew a gasket because her acting skills were at best limited. Redd famously said "if she goes, I go" and the rest is sitcom history. So take yourself back to the days when you would put on certain records "after the kids go to bed" and have a laugh with LaWanda, The Queen of Comedy. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more LaWanda? Most of LaWanda's albums are very NSFW -- though if you want a quick primer in urban slang of the 70s they are a great source. This track is taken from the one mainstream comedy record she did and while the language was toned down, the point was still sharp. https://youtu.be/Evsd1jpiMuQ?si=MzW09WALAqYyVhBn LaWanda's Aunt Esther was a cornerstone of Sanford and Son -- and LaWanda played it to the hilt (as did Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford). Here's some of Aunt Esther's best.https://youtu.be/0ppXVtCoA_E?si=-o_JFFQSPEYLI5fK Here's a time capsule -- it the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast of Angie Dickinson -- featuring LaWanda as one of the roasters -- only she turned most of her fire on Dino. And dig the 1970s color scheme -- you can feel the shag carpet!https://youtu.be/WjzbQXVywk8?si=PUUwKjxqYzTHXgTV

This week it's two terrifying tales about more than meets the eye! First up, Lauren takes you on a ride through the uncanny valley with the “Laff in the Dark” mannequin at the The Pike amusement park. In the early ‘70s, children visiting the boardwalk in Long Beach, California noticed one of the mannequins in the funhouse attraction looked a little…off. But it wasn't until some years later, when a production crew from a popular TV series were shooting in the funhouse in 1976, something more was discovered beneath the surface. How did this grotesque mannequin end up as a set piece in the amusement park ride and where did it come from?! And what was the glow-in-the-dark paint it was covered in actually hiding?! Next, Felicia profiles William H. Mumler - a spirit photographer from the 1800s. People took notice of Mumler's photography when he developed a self-portrait that appeared to feature the ghost of who he claimed was his cousin that had been dead for 12 years! This portrait is believed by many in the paranormal world to be the first spirit photograph ever. But William had both famous clients and famous critics, including infamous flim flam man P.T. Barnum. Listen to hear more about his fascinating work!PS: If you have requests for future episodes or just want to hang out, follow us on Instagram @sinistersisterspodcast
