Desiree Moore grew up with addicted parents. She wanted desperately to live a different life and when she met someone at 18 who seemed like he came from a white-picket-fence family she couldn't believe her luck. The two got married and began having kids right away. Her husband moved from job to job, trying to advance his career but eventually ran out of luck and was forced to return from the first job he'd left. Things changed drastically with him. His attitude and outlook turned dark. He began using pornography obsessively and that's when the violence began.Desiree did everything she could to stand up for herself and her kids. She kicked him out. She tried to battle against the violence she experienced, but finally the violence turned to her children. In 2008 her then husband murdered her daughter.Desiree could not function. The guilt and sadness were crushing. She felt as if she could never be whole again. Her other daughter was put into foster care. She worked 3 jobs to try to survive but was homeless. The years passed without any hope on the horizon. Then on the encouragement of a friend, she moved to a new town and her life changed completely. Things she never thought possible became true. While her daughter's death would never leave her, but for the first time in a long time, life felt like it might be ok.Today Desiree has a master's degree and has been able to escape the generational poverty that seemed insurmountable. Her grief is cyclical, but she uses her story to help others have hope even in the darkest moments.Episode ResourcesWebsite | desireemoorebooks.comConnect with DesireeTikTok | @meet_desireeConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

Abuse is not okay. As I listened to my guest, Desiree Moore, share her story, saying, "I'm sorry" didn't feel like enough. Adopted at the age of three, she suffered at the hands of those who were supposed to be her protector. She wanted to escape but didn't dare speak up. Foster care entered into her story at the age of seventeen as a welcomed relief. Throughout her journey, though, she longed to meet her biological mother. Years spent fantasizing about her and what that relationship would be like left her feeling confused and disappointed when the time finally did come for them to meet. I was so proud of Desiree for sharing, and I know that what she learned in meeting her mom will help us too.

The U.S. International Trade Commission is charged with remedying unfair acts in the importation of products into the United States. While alleged unfair acts at issue before the Commission tend to take the form of intellectual property infringement, the Commission’s mandate is broader, and can be construed to include unfair acts in the form of the importation of articles manufactured using child and forced labor in contravention of customary international law. A complainant successfully proving such unfair acts is statutorily entitled to an order excluding such articles from further importation, engendering significant business and other benefits for such complainant.
