Hi, welcome back! Today I want to share three communication tips that can truly unlock your child’s potential and shape who they become — not just as successful students, but as human beings. These are the insights I’ve gathered over 30 years, watching children grow from toddlers into young adults across both Japanese and Western education systems. Those three tips are: #1 — Build their confidence only through their actions. #2 — Embrace the power of consequence. #3 — Separate their identity from their outcomes. Let’s dive in. Hi everyone!
What keeps us from being more social? Nick Epley calls it a “mind-reading mistake.”We all think about what others think, particularly what they think about us. The problem, says Nick Epley, is that we're almost always wrong.Epley is a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and author of A Little More Social: How Small Choices Create Unexpected Happiness, Health, and Connection. What keeps people from engaging authentically, connecting deeply, and enjoying a meaningful social life? It comes down to an error of social cognition, “A mind-reading mistake,” Epley says. “If I don't think you want to talk to me, I won't try. And I'll never find out that I'm wrong about that.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Epley and host Matt Abrahams explore why we hold ourselves back from meaningful conversation, and what happens when we don't. From taking an interest in others to sharing more freely about ourselves, Epley shares strategies for being a little more social — and making your life considerably better as a result. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Nick EpleyNick's Book: A Little More SocialEp.133 From Good to Super: How Supercommunicators Unlock the Language of Connection Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (01:31) - Problems with Body Language (04:15) - Perspective Getting (07:14) - Asking Better Questions (08:41) - Moving Beyond Small Talk (10:13) - Why We Hold Back (11:33) - Advice For Introverts (15:17) - A Little More Social (18:34) - The Final Three Questions (24:45) - Conclusion

In dentistry, many problems aren't caused by the procedure itself—they come from what wasn't discussed before treatment started. In this episode, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Dennis Hartlieb, a general dentist and educator, to share four communication tips that help you set expectations, reduce misunderstandings, and protect the practice before you ever pick up a handpiece. You'll learn how to give patients clearer choices, document risk the right way, talk through outcomes without creating fear, and spot red flags before they become bigger problems—listen to Episode 1019 of The Best Practices Show!Main Takeaways:Give patients two options to simplify decisions and prevent overwhelm.Explain material choices in simple terms (composite as “plastic,” porcelain as “glass”) and connect each to tradeoffs.Set yourself up for success by having the key conversations before you start treatment, especially on higher-risk cases.Sell the benefits of the recommended treatment before you explain what can go wrong.Use photos and brief chart notes (like “reviewed photograph of crack with patient”) to document the condition and the conversation.Watch for red flags like patients who fight you on treatment, arrive with multiple splints, or evaluate dentistry with magnification.Manage expectations for single-tooth esthetics by defining “social distance” success and planning for follow-up adjustments.Snippets:00:00 Why communication before treatment matters.01:00 Meet Dr. Dennis Hartlieb and what he teaches.02:10 Dennis explains his practice focus and Dental Online Training.04:10 Dennis shares his connection to Buddy Mopper and composite dentistry.06:10 The two-option framework for a chipped anterior tooth.07:20 “Plastic vs. glass”: how to explain composite vs. porcelain in patient language.09:35 What Dennis says when patients ask, “What would you do, doc?”12:45 Managing cracked teeth: using pre-op photos to document unpredictability.16:25 Sell the benefits first, then discuss the risks.18:05 Missing tooth conversations: step-by-step options without overwhelming patients.20:35 Why Dennis limits choices to two options at a time.25:10 Red flags: patients who resist treatment or “know dentistry too well.”28:05 Splints, magnifying mirrors, and when to step back from treatment.31:20 Setting expectations for single-tooth matching in the esthetic zone.34:45 Fee levels based on esthetic difficulty and patient expectations.36:20 Why Dennis prefers composite veneers for control and predictable revisions.39:00 Final lesson: ask questions, truly listen, and pull on the thread.41:15 Where to find Dennis: Dental Online Training and YouTube.Guest Bio/Guest Resources:Dr. Dennis Hartlieb is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Today, Dr. Alexandra and fellow psychologist, author, and podcast host Dr. Tracy Dalgleish are digging into a dynamic that is notoriously difficult to navigate - if, of course, all the stereotypes and jokes and rhetoric are to be totally believed. Except in this conversation, they're handling it with the compassion, nuance, and understanding that all relationships deserve. They are dissecting the dynamic between a woman, her husband and her mother-in-law, and the complexities often found in that triangle. Brian Bercht speaks directly to men working to rebuild trust after betrayal. Drawing from over 20 years of helping couples recover from infidelity, he reveals why trust often starts below zero, the mistakes men commonly make, and what it really takes to restore safety in a marriage. If you've been doing the work but still feel stuck, this episode offers the clarity and direction you need.Yes, you can move beyond the pain and get the life you want.www.beyondaffairs.com 360.306.3367
In this episode, Brian Bercht introduces a foundational recovery principle: separating the position the affair partner played from their character as a person. When character and behavior get confused, healing conversations turn defensive, emotional, and unproductive. Brian explains why spouses who acted unfaithfully often defend the affair partner, why betrayed spouses feel compelled to vilify them, and how both reactions can quietly sabotage recovery. You'll learn how to talk about the other person with clarity, accuracy, and purpose. Without minimizing the harm, escalating conflict, or protecting the wrong things.Yes, you can move beyond the pain and get the life you want.www.beyondaffairs.com 360.306.3367
In this fourth installment of Anger From a Man's Perspective, Brian Bercht addresses a powerful and common question from a wife navigating betrayal recovery: “If he's trying to clean up his act, why does he still walk around with an angry, sour attitude, and why does it make me feel unsafe?”This episode unpacks what's really happening beneath a man's anger after an affair, especially when he appears to be doing many of the “right” things on the surface but still shows up with frustration, defensiveness, or a persistent edge.Brian explains why a man's anger is often not about his wife, but about perceived injustice, fear, loss of control, and unresolved internal struggles. He outlines how anger can mask deeper emotions like fear, shame, insecurity, and feelings of being overlooked, misunderstood, or insignificant; many of which predate the marriage itself.Yes, you can move beyond the pain and get the life you want.www.beyondaffairs.com 360.306.3367
Do men truly realize the impact their anger has on their wives? And if they don't, what do they actually believe about their anger and its effects? In this episode, Brian dives straight into a listener question that explores the often-misunderstood dynamics of male anger in marriage. He breaks down why compound questions can create confusion in communication, especially between husbands and wives, and how that confusion can unintentionally lead to hurt, frustration, and conflict. If you've ever felt misunderstood, or wondered why your spouse “doesn't get it," this episode will shed light on what's really happening beneath the surface.Yes, you can move beyond the pain and get the life you want.www.beyondaffairs.com 360.306.3367
In this second installment on anger from a man's perspective, Brian continues the conversation by discussing the beliefs, behaviors, and biological differences that often shape how men experience and express anger. This episode dives into the visceral differences between men and women, exploring why women are often more sensitive to signs of anger or danger, and how this sensitivity is not a flaw, but a God-designed, instinctive response rooted in protection and survival. If you're navigating conflict, emotional disconnect, or healing after betrayal, this episode offers clarity, wisdom, and a healthier framework for understanding anger...without shame or blame.Yes, you can move beyond the pain and get the life you want.www.beyondaffairs.com 360.306.3367
Brian gets real, raw, and honest about anger and how it can show up in a man's life. "My anger was responsible for some horrible actions resulting in damage to either individuals or property. The impact of these behaviors often but not always, remained longer with me than it did with any of the ones I may have hurt."Listen in as we start this mini series Anger - From a Man's Perspective. Yes, you can move beyond the pain and get the life you want.www.beyondaffairs.com 360.306.3367

Message us here!Holiday gatherings promise connection, but so many of us walk in bracing for old patterns: the comment that lands like a dart, the sibling rivalry that never grew up, the invisible work of keeping the peace. In this episode, I delve into why this season can feel so raw and how to survive it when your family reunions don't resemble a Hallmark card.I also talk about this year's surge in anxiety and grief, the rise in estrangement, and the isolation that lingers after the holiday lights come down in January. This time might be stressful under normal circumstances, but it's a whole other thing when you have dysfunctional or even "toxic" family. If you're stuck in old unhealthy patterns with your family, you might not realize how much holding onto a "healing fantasy" is keeping you trapped. I unpack the concept of a “healing fantasy,” that deep, often hidden wish that a parent will finally see you, a sibling will get help, or conflict will stop for good. Then I suggest some practical tools from DBT that will get you focused on what really matters to you this holiday season.Support the showIf you're navigating someone's mental health or emotional issues, join KulaMind, our community and support platform. The NICU can range from having just a couple of extra staff in the delivery room to having 15 people if a baby needs help, making the birth experience much more intense and involved. Planning ahead with your partner about who will go with the baby in case of separation can help make a stressful situation a little easier. About 10% of babies need some help breathing at birth, but most recover quickly; only a small percentage require NICU care beyond the basic interventions. NICUs are graded by levels (I-IV), and knowing what level your hospital offers can help families prepare—higher-level NICUs can treat more complex issues but aren't always necessary for uncomplicated births. If your hospital isn't a level III or IV, babies needing higher-level care may need to be transferred, which could mean temporary separation from parents; hospitals always work to reunite families as quickly as possible. NICU nurses are passionate, skilled, and deeply care about the babies and their families, creating a loving and safe environment even during stressful times. Parents can support their recovery and milk production by getting rest and using NICU technologies (like webcams) to stay connected—it's okay to take breaks and trust the NICU staff. Emerging technologies like Labry's Life Bubble are making NICU stays safer and more comfortable, allowing parents to hold their babies even when special catheters are in place. Skin-to-skin contact in the NICU is highly beneficial for both babies and parents, helping with bonding, milk production, and even neurodevelopment; parents are encouraged to ask staff about timing and any concerns about wires or tubes.
