Bus drivers are beginning to pick up speed in their campaign for better pay. After multiple strikes and calls for more pay, the Government has announced it will inject $61 million dollars into urban bus driver wages over the next four years. But questions remain over whether this will sort out staff shortages, with 800 drivers needed to fill gaps. First Union assistance general secretary Louisa Jones says this boost is significant for many drivers. LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Leah Shaver tracks driver pay trends at the National Transportation Institute. She discusses why an increasing number of drivers want more than just pay per mile and the growing use of alternative pay programs. Shaver also talks about why these different pay packages are becoming more common and why carriers should think about evolving beyond a pay-per-mile model.

Sign-on bonuses are unnecessary because fleets aren’t doing a lot of recruiting. Two years ago, many drivers jumped from carrier to carrier to collect the cash.  Stop the Full blown Attack on Driver Wages in FAA bill  Saturday 5-5-18 6PM eastern Call in 347-826-9170 What does the ATA lobbied Denham Amendment have in common with truck driver wages?   EVERYTHING!  BY passing the Denham provision in the 2018 FAA ReAuthorization bill, it would be the most direct and egregious attack on driver wages ever. The Denham provision would allow the Federal government to Preempt all state labor laws which protect employees, ultimately creating new law regulatting wages of those involved in interstate commerce. The Denham Amendment has been slipped in the FAA ReAuthorization bill and most drivers don't even know what the devastating long term effects could be on their wages. Here is the simplified version of the effects of the Denham Amendment. Legally, drivers will only have to be paid for the miles they drive, no matter how many hours they work.  Here's how!  "STOP anti-trucker wage DENHAM AMENDMENT in FAA Reauthorization Bill"  Denham Amendment is broken down and explained;  Denham, For the 6th Time??? A lot of discussion concerning ELD’s has opened Pandora's box of trucker issues.  Strong to ELD opposition has led to many other discussions affecting drivers.  Among them are the Hours of Service and the 14hour clock, Trucker Wages, Federal Preemption of States Rights. ATA is at it again. Federal Preemption against Driver Wages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiTWNjG4_kU Preemption failed to pass in the Omnibus bill, it was ATA's most recent of 5 Attempts since 2015. They are now attempting to include language in FAAAA Re-authorization bill Preemption update against Trucker Wages -The fight to be paid for all time U.S. Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX-36), attempted to relieve truckers from the negative effects of the ELD mandate which went into enforcement mode on April 1st. Babin Introduces Legislation to Improve Hours-of-Service Regulations  The Responsible and Effective Standards for Truckers (REST) Act, legislation that would modernize hours of service regulations for truck drivers. The REST Act would allow drivers to take one rest break per shift, for up to three consecutive hours. The single off-duty period would not be counted toward the driver’s 14-hour, on-duty allowance and would not extent the total, allowable drive limits. This leads us to the question, "Does Rest bill modify HOS to relieve drivers or allow them to now work a 17 hour day?" To be a part of the show call 347-826-9170

Open Forum: Discussing Root causes of Low Truck Driver Wages? Thursday 5-12-16 6PM ET 347-826-9170   As truckers continue to perform more work "for free, their wages decline, especially when taken into account that drivers are working more hours for either equal or less than their wages earned just a few years ago. But what is REALLY contributing to the decline in wages? You would think if there was a legitimate Driver Shortage, wages would be rising? Jerry Fritts recently posted interesting article "Driver Productivity Increases as Wages Plummet" Pat Hockaday from Truckers United has also been vocal on Radio and Social Media for many months now regarding “fair and living wages for truck drivers.”, and has been organizing a call for truckers to unite.... but where? Saturday 4-2-16   Trucking Open Forum: Feature Topic “Does increase trucker productivity LOWER Wages?” Ongoing Truck Driver Issues continue as well as the discussions and ideas for solutions.  As Drivers wait for the FMCSA ELD Final Rule to kick in 12-2017, many are concerned that their wages will be reduced. Theoretically, if you legally log your paper logs anyway, they should not, but why do some feel they will? Recently OOIDA has filed their argument challenging the FMCSA’s ELD mandate stating that requiring electronic monitoring devices on commercial vehicles does not advance safety, is arbitrary and capricious and violates Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. But is there a way that ELD’s could be used to increase wages? What about hours of service (HOS)?  How are you logging your hours?  How many hours to you log off duty?  Are you really off duty? Veteran truckers Jerry Fritts and Pat Hockaday of Truckers United join us to share their twist on these topics.  These are a few of the topics, but as part of the open forum format, callers are welcome to call in as discussions are open to “anything trucking” TO be a part of the show call 347-826-9170 and then click “1” on your keypad.

Will the CSA lead to a real driver shortage and ultimately increase truck driver pay? Are you experiencing the roadside inspections and other reported consequences from the CSA implementation? Could the trucking industry actually see a shortage of drivers or has the problem always been a driver pay shortage? Allen is joined by special guest, Todd Dills, Senior Editor for Truckers News Magazine, to discuss the January, 2011 edition which examines the CSA, the truck driver shortage and the potential for a wage increase for truck drivers. What do you think, drivers? Is the potential of a driver pay increase proving to be real or is it trucking as usual? Open lines to take your calls.
