Start with a promise and test it hard: can a premium three-row actually balance comfort, capability, and value without resorting to gimmicks? We put the 2025 Infiniti QX60 through its paces, calling out the crisp front-end design, tight third row, and the surprising 6,000-pound tow rating that turns a modest 2.0L turbo into a legit weekend hauler. We share the wins you feel every day—quiet ride, simple infotainment, smart headrest speakers—and the misses that matter, like noticeable turbo lag and a transmission that sometimes feels a step behind. From there, we pivot to ownership smarts with a sharp shortlist of cars that make DIY maintenance less painful and more affordable. If you're building confidence with a torque wrench, models like the Toyota Corolla and Camry, Kia Rio, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Silverado ('03–'07), and Mazda MX-5 Miata deliver easy access, plentiful parts, and proven reliability. We explain why access matters more than horsepower when you're replacing plugs, belts, and brakes in the driveway, and how parts ecosystems can save you time and money. We close by championing a modern minivan that earns its keep: the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica. Seven seats, Stow 'n Go flat-fold magic, rear-seat entertainment, Family Cam peace of mind, and a calm, quiet ride powered by Chrysler's stalwart 3.6L V6 with AWD. Real-world mpg, towing capability, and pricing context against Toyota Sienna, Kia Carnival, and Honda Odyssey make the choice clearer: if daily life means people and gear, a thoughtful minivan still solves problems most SUVs can't. Big recalls, bigger questions, and a lineup of can't-miss car events—this week's show brings the garage, the newsroom, and the car meet together. We start with a clear-eyed look at current safety recalls touching seat belt integrity, instrument panel failures, fuel leaks, and high-voltage battery risks. Then we unpack a stunning manufacturing misstep that may have mixed spare and production wheels, raising the stakes on quality control and why plant processes matter to everyday drivers. From the driveway, we share a painfully relatable DIY saga: changing a “simple” headlight that required removing the bumper and grille, only to discover hybrid LED-halogen setups and per-side fuses. It's a snapshot of modern car complexity and a reminder to verify parts, wiring, and fuse maps before diving in. If you've wrestled with CAN-bus quirks, you'll feel seen.Performance fans get fresh ammo for the eternal engine debate. Dodge's Charger Scat Pack is moving to the Hurricane inline-six, promising big power, strong torque, and a case for efficiency without sacrificing thrills. We break down why the inline-six architecture is back in style, how it stacks up against Hemi expectations, and what it means for enthusiasts who want speed, smoothness, and reliability. We also check on brand trajectories: Scout Motors is marching toward pre-production with its Traveler SUV and Terra pickup, while Bollinger's legal and financial troubles underline how hard it is to build an EV company at scale.Rounding it out, we spotlight community: BOGO tickets and VIP night for the Houston auto show, Camp Jeep's perennial draw, and a slate of cruise-ins and Toys for Tots drives that make December a perfect month to get the car out, give back, and meet fellow enthusiasts. Bring a toy, bring a friend, and come say hello when we broadcast live at the Gulf Coast Auto Shield Car Social. If you enjoy honest car talk, practical advice, and the latest on recalls, new engines, and local events, follow the show, share it with a gearhead friend, and leave a quick review. What truly changed at Le Mans when the 2000s began—and why did teams abandon open cockpits just as speeds stayed sky high? We invited author and photographer John Brooks to walk us through the decade he chronicles in Le Mans: The Official History 2000–2009, and his trackside vantage point delivers a rare blend of technical clarity and human detail. From Audi's R8 and R10 TDI era to Peugeot's blistering 908, we explore how diesel power, aero efficiency, and rule changes made reliability the ultimate performance edge.John pulls back the curtain on the engineering trade-offs that redefined endurance racing: the gains in safety that came with closed cockpits, the pit stop calculations that win 24-hour fights, and the unsung collaboration between European operations and American squads like Champion Racing. He also shares how he inherited the official history project from the legendary Quentin Spurring, why the 2000–2009 window stands on its own, and how writing the story with his own photographs turns a coffee-table book into a time machine. We keep the wrenches turning beyond the track. Jeff breaks down the easiest cars to work on—Toyota Corolla and Camry, Kia Rio, Chevrolet Silverado, Honda Accord, and Mazda MX-5—spotlighting accessible engine bays, abundant parts, and weekend-friendly maintenance. Then we climb into the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica, a thoughtful family hauler with stow-and-go versatility, a smooth 3.6L V6, available AWD, and cabin tech that keeps everyone calm mile after mile.If you're searching for Le Mans history, Audi vs Peugeot, prototype safety, and real-world car advice in one place, you're home. A dealership website script shouldn't be the key to your car. Yet that's exactly what one security researcher demonstrated on a DEF CON stage, turning a forgotten corner of a portal into national-level access that could unlock vehicles, view customer data, and send remote commands. We dig into what that means for drivers, dealers, and automakers now that the family SUV doubles as a rolling endpoint connected to clouds, APIs, and third-party tools. We walk through the chain of weak links—subdomains, misconfigured permissions, app integrations—and explain why dealer networks can become the soft underbelly of an automaker's security. Then we turn to the flipside of software-defined cars: when an over-the-air update breaks a feature people rely on. A new Tahoe's built-in garage door opener stopped working post-update, and the finger-pointing that followed shows how support and testing must evolve. Convenience only works when reliability does too.Safety headlines round out the reality check. From a Kia K5 fuel-system fault that can over-pressurize tanks, to airbag inflator issues and wiring harness problems affecting pickups and SUVs, we outline the most pressing recalls and what owners should do next. Along the way, we keep the enthusiast spark alive with a Sold Cars Roundup—proof you can still get into the hobby with a '73 Charger under twenty grand or a clean Barracuda around thirty—plus highlights from a standout student technician competition that signals where the industry is headed. If you care about connected cars, cybersecurity, recalls, and the classic market, this conversation maps the risks and the opportunities with clear takeaways you can act on today. What happens when a family heirloom gets a NASCAR heart and a date with a mountain? We brought Richard Tomlin of Apex Auto Works on to share the full story of transforming a 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner into a Pike's Peak contender by setting the classic body over a stretched NASCAR truck chassis and dropping in a Mopar R5 P7 that sings to 9,500 RPM. The road to SEMA almost ended on the shoulder after a tow rig failure, but with help from racers and friends the car made a prime debut and drew a crowd that wanted every detail—how it was built, why it matters, and where it's headed next.We dig into the engineering: cutting and adding four inches to match the B-body wheelbase, aligning the shell, using NASCAR-style ride height adjusters, and balancing street presence with a proper cage, race seats, and belts. Then we climb into the thin-air problem. Pike's Peak starts near 8,000 feet and finishes above 14,000, so we talk mid-altitude tuning targets, power loss on NA engines, and a throwback solution—variable jetting on a carb, with insight from Brad Pink, son of legendary engine builder Ed Pink. The motor has already proved itself on the mountain in a C10, and we break down the expectations for power at altitude versus near sea level.Richard also opens the shop doors: a turbo LS7 Volvo, a refreshed '69 Roadrunner, a twin-turbo LS G-body in paint, and a batch of Miatas, including a Lemons car that a 17-year-old is repairing while learning to wrench. We talk craft, patience, and why “toys” deserve thoughtful timelines. Along the way, we swap stories about Charlotte's NASCAR spectacle—how great facilities make new fans—and preview a spring motorsports festival in Victoria's Riverside Park: a tight, time-attack course through the trees designed for stunning visuals and driver challenge. If you love bold builds, real-world engineering, and the culture that keeps car life vibrant, this one's for you. Some faces you can't forget. We kick off with a sharp, entertaining tour of automotive front ends that sparked love, hate, and head-scratching in equal measure—from the Jeep Cherokee KL's split lighting and the Lincoln MKT's controversial split wing to the Dodge Nitro's gym-bro stance and the Chevy SSR's retro grin. The thread through all of them is clear: when the nose leads the story, it can amplify a car's character or drown out everything it does well. Then we pivot to a grounded, detail-rich review of the 2025 Jeep Wagoneer in its two-row electric 4xe configuration. We break down the sleek seven-slot grill, the long-wheelbase proportions, and a cabin that feels more expensive than the price tag suggests. Think full-length dash, integrated displays, ambient lighting, and upscale seating that deliver daily comfort without forcing a third row. On the road, direct-drive electric power brings up to 600 horsepower potential, stout torque, and an up-to-300-mile range target, with the quiet, planted ride you'd expect from a 5,600-plus-pound SUV. Towing up to 3,500 pounds adds weekend flexibility, and for gas loyalists, the Hurricane inline-six in the L variant keeps the door open.We compare pricing and positioning against the Cadillac Lyriq, Lexus RZ 450e, and Genesis GV70 Electric, and we talk honestly about the complexity of trims and badges across Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The takeaway: design should match purpose, and the Wagoneer's balance of refined styling, practical space, and real-world range makes a strong case in a crowded field. If you're into car design hot takes and want straight talk on whether the new Wagoneer belongs in your driveway, you'll feel right at home here. Missed calls, rotary phones, and a trooper who can't quite get a signal set the tone for a lively ride through today's car world. We open with a burst of nostalgia—remember the “finger stop” on a dial phone?—then shift gears into the realities drivers face right now: inspection changes, mid-year law updates, and why some rules never match the rhythm of real life. From there, we pull back the curtain on dealership dynamics in smaller markets and the incentives that shape where families plant their flags and expand their rooftops. The big industry turn lands with Amazon Autos: Ford dealers can now sell certified pre-owned vehicles on Amazon, complete with financing, warranties, and return windows. It's a customer journey built for 2025—transparent pricing, nearby inventory, and a checkout that feels as familiar as buying a blender. We also get candid about DIY repair in the age of sealed modules. One headlight swap becomes a full bumper removal and a surprise hybrid of halogen and LED, exposing the gap between what manuals say and what cars actually do.Our featured review zeroes in on the 2025 Jeep Wagoneer in EV spec—a two-row SUV with elegant lines, a properly luxurious cabin, and a calm, capable drive. With up to about 300 miles of range, full-time AWD, and roughly 3,500 pounds of towing, it squares up against Cadillac Lyriq and Genesis GV70 Electric while carving its own lane with smart packaging and serious cargo space. We break down trims, pricing, and the confusing Wagoneer versus Grand Wagoneer mix, then compare the EV with Jeep's Hurricane six in the L variant for drivers who still want cylinders. Along the way, we unpack holiday car marketing that actually resonates: experiences, community, and the magic of a well-placed bow that makes a driveway feel like a movie scene.Come for the laughs, stay for the insights, and leave with a sharper sense of how car culture, online retail, and electric SUVs are converging. What happens when a championship chase runs straight into a mechanical gut punch—and the family still finds a way to win big? We sit down with Jerry Emmons to unpack a season that had everything: a Division IV Stock Eliminator title, finals against his own nephews, and a Sunday triumph in Dallas that marked his 20th national event win. The story isn't just about trophies; it's about how a lost-boost hauler turned a cross-country push into a hard reset, and how a family team absorbs both the thrill of the stripe and the sting of a photo finish. Then we flip the visor down on the used-car market and call it like we see it. Jerry breaks down a rough first half—parts shortages, lost vendor discounts, slower recon, rate pressure—and why the fourth quarter tells a different story. If you're buying or selling, this is the cheat sheet: sub-$25k inventory moves fastest, $15k–$18k is lightning, and well-specced Broncos are nipping at Wrangler's heels. Trucks still print demand in Texas regardless of trim, because capability and towing never go out of style. We talk margins, sourcing, reconditioning timelines, and how steady rates could reset volume next year.To round things out, we road-test the 2026 Chevy Tahoe Premier 4WD. With the 6.2L V8 and Magnetic Ride Control, it tows with confidence and rides quieter than its size suggests. The wide-format infotainment makes sense at a glance, the cabin feels airy with generous glass, and while the rear media screens look tacked on, families will appreciate the function. Cross-shopping Expedition, Armada, Sequoia, or Yukon? We lay out how the Tahoe balances power, comfort, and real-world utility without the fluff. If you love racing heritage, straight-talk market insight, and honest reviews that focus on how vehicles actually live day to day, you're in the right place. What does it take to turn a local bracket meet into a 140-car institution that tracks want to host and racers plan their year around? We sit down with Scott Stregel to unpack the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge, from how the series shares revenue with drag strips to the schedule and class design that keep cars in the lanes and teams coming back.Scott explains why a fourteen-date calendar beats endless makeup races, and how shifting out-of-town events to Saturday afternoons through midnight helps racers dodge brutal Monday commutes after long tows. We break down the club divisions—5A for large rosters, 4A for mid-size, 3A for smaller teams—why everyone still races everyone in brackets, and how the points chase remains fair across club sizes. You'll also hear why most race cars run eighth mile in this region, when quarter mile makes sense for street-tire classes, and how that balance keeps competition safe and close.Beyond the staging lanes, we get into the media engine behind the growth: consistent social content, cross-promotion with host tracks, and the push to document more live racing with photos and video. That spotlight doesn't just hype results; it builds a community identity that travels from Ferris to Houston and beyond. Scott previews the targeted mid-March season start, the spring and fall segments, and the venues on the wish list, plus the addition of a TV vehicle class aimed at new participants. A flat tire, a British accent, and a time machine into racing's most underrated proving ground—this one starts with a grin and lands with substance. We sit down with journalist and author James Newbold to unpack Formula 3000, the 1985–2004 series that quietly shaped today's open-wheel landscape. From its wild early years with multiple chassis and engines to the spec-era shift that prioritized driver skill and team preparation, F3000 became the launchpad for names you know and stories you probably don't.James shares why he wrote Formula 3000: Where Legends Earn Their Stripes and how he unearthed 350 rarely seen photos from archives now stewarded by Getty. We connect the dots from F3000 to GP2 to modern Formula Two, demystify how the ladder works, and spotlight alumni who made waves across motorsport—F1 contenders, IndyCar champions, and team leaders who still shape race weekends. Expect clear explanations, race-weekend context, and a few surprising career pivots along the way. Then we shift gears to car culture at street level: the origins of car clubs, the rough edges of early turf wars, and the transformation into today's community-focused cruise-ins and charity events. Think a three-cylinder can't pull its weight? We put the 2026 Chevy Trax through nearly 500 miles and found punchy torque, smart gearing, and honest 30-mpg efficiency that make city runs and highway stretches feel easy. Then we climb into the 2025 Kia Telluride SX Prestige AWD, where the vibe flips from thrifty to luxurious: a serene ride, a clean and modern cabin with a huge infotainment screen, and a 291-hp V6 that tows up to 5,500 pounds without breaking a sweat. We start with the Trax's sharp design, intuitive controls, and surprising cargo room, weighing the real trade-off of two-wheel drive against its attractive price. From trims to tech, it's a small SUV that nails the basics and sprinkles in style, competing credibly with Mazda CX-30 and VW Taos on affordability and ease of use. Then we step into the Telluride's larger world—three rows of comfort, refined road manners, and the kind of daily livability that wins families fast. The knobs are back where they matter, the ride is limo-like, and the value story holds even as the options stack up.Between these road tests, we detour into car history with Chevy's VertiPak experiment—shipping Vegas nose-down to cut rail costs. It's a wild look at how engineering, logistics, and real-world execution collide, and it frames a timeless buying lesson: value isn't just about price; it's about how well a vehicle fits your life. Whether you're chasing efficiency and a low entry point or space, power, and long-distance comfort, these two SUVs show how clear priorities create better choices. If you enjoy smart car talk with real-world numbers and honest impressions, follow the show, share this episode with a friend, and leave a quick review so more drivers can find us. A tiny, overlooked component is bringing giant assembly lines to a halt. We dig into the Nexperia saga—European control, Chinese export blocks, and a packaging choke point—and explain why the “boring” diodes and transistors tucked into door locks, HVAC, and wiper motors matter as much as any cutting-edge processor. When each vehicle hides 300 to 600 of these legacy chips, one missing part can park an entire line, and that's exactly what Honda, Volkswagen, and Nissan are starting to face.We connect the supply chain dots to real-world outcomes: reduced shifts, delayed models, and dealer backlogs. Then we pivot to a sharp recalls roundup, where Ford's record-setting year meets moonroof deflectors, defrost issues, and camera failures, while tires and lighting glitches hit other brands from Cadillac to Fiat and Ferrari. It's a tour of what happens when quality, parts availability, and service capacity collide—and what owners can do now to stay safe and informed. For a breather, we fire up Name The Sold Car Price, comparing a 1952 Studebaker Commander, a 1965 MGB, an '85 F-250, a 2002 Thunderbird, and a stunning 1936 Packard 120. You'll hear what moved, what stalled, and what these numbers say about condition, provenance, and taste. We also map the calendar for Veterans Day cruise-ins, toy drives, and big regional shows—community checkpoints where car culture thrives, knowledge spreads, and enthusiasts help each other keep their machines on the road.If you care about how cars are built, why they break, and where the culture is headed, this conversation brings clarity and a few laughs. We sit down with newly appointed Houston Auto Show president Rochelle Salinas to unpack what it takes to steer a legacy event through inventory shortages, EV uncertainty, and shifting manufacturer strategies while still delivering experiences people can feel.Rochelle shares concrete updates: Camp Jeep is confirmed, a curated luxury showcase with Modern Luxury is on deck, and outdoor ride-and-drives with Toyota, Subaru, and Stellantis remain a highlight. We're adding expert-led tours that group vehicles by real buyer needs—SUVs, trucks, family cars—so you can compare fast, ask smart questions, and leave informed. Inspired by trips to LA, New York, and Chicago, we're bringing an overlanding zone to Houston, complete with camping setups and Scout partnerships to make it hands-on and family friendly.Community impact gets real with Houston Give Back Day, created with the partner Boat Show to spotlight roughly 20 nonprofits and on-site blood donation. We also celebrate the rapid growth of the student technician competition at Texas State Technical College in Rosenberg—23 teams, scholarships, cash, and tools—building the talent pipeline our industry needs. And for a dose of car culture history, Jeff revisits the Vertipak era, when Chevy shipped Vegas nose-down to pack more cars per railcar, a bold logistics gamble that changed how vehicles move across the country. We close with a detailed review of the 2026 Chevy Trax. It's a small SUV with a big value story: clean design, an excellent infotainment screen, surprisingly lively 1.2-liter turbo performance, and near-30 mpg combined, all at a compelling price point. Two family haulers, two very different promises. We put the 2025 Mazda CX-90 and the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica through their paces to find out whether driving joy or everyday ease should lead your next purchase. If you've ever stood in a dealer lot torn between a sleek three-row SUV and a minivan that just works, this head-to-head is your shortcut to clarity. We start with the CX-90's immediate curb appeal: balanced lines, tasteful chrome, and those painted arch moldings that make it feel premium without shouting. On the road, Mazda's 3.3-liter turbo lights up with 340 hp and 369 lb-ft, backed by an eight-speed that helps it feel quick and composed. Our long loop returned an impressive 26.7 mpg. Still, there are caveats. A fussy start-stop system and a first-to-second shift that nags in traffic chip away at an otherwise athletic package. And the infotainment? It's still behind the best, which matters when carpool chaos hits and you just need things to work. Then we slide into the Chrysler Pacifica, a minivan with real presence. The laid-back windshield and blacked-out pillars deliver clean lines, while sliding doors and a generous liftgate make every errand easier. Inside, practical storage and durable, comfortable seating keep the cabin tidy. Top trims add surprising luxury, and dual sunroofs brighten both rows. The V6 and nine-speed won't win stoplight sprints, but they deliver the right blend of power, quiet, and stability. The ace up its sleeve is Stow 'n Go: seats that vanish to create a flat, low cargo floor, then reappear when duty calls. Add competitive pricing and AWD, and you get a family machine that solves problems before they start.Looking for a driver's SUV with real power and premium vibes? The CX-90 makes every commute feel special. Need maximum flexibility, painless loading, and trip-ready storage on demand? The Pacifica proves why the minivan still reigns for real life. If this helped narrow your shortlist, share the episode with a friend, hit follow, and drop a review with the one feature you can't live without.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. A vinyl roof once meant instant glamour. We open with the style story that turned sedans into showroom stars, tracing how factory-installed tops promised convertible vibes without the compromise. From luxury badges to muscle icons, the trend peaked with opera windows and bold textures, then collided with reality—moisture trapped under fabric, hidden rust, and a slow retreat from the option sheets by the 1990s.Then the conversation downshifts into the shadows: the machines that were too rare, too radical, or too rule-breaking to live a normal life. We unpack the near-mythic 1969 Corvette ZL1 with its all-aluminum 427, Ford's aero-slick Torino King Cobra stopped by a NASCAR rule change, and Pontiac's full-size Catalina 2+2 eclipsed by the GTO spotlight. Alongside them sit the AMC Matador Machine that marketing wouldn't bless and a ghostly Ford Fairlane prototype that left almost no trace beyond rumors and a few photos. We close under the hood with Pontiac's experimental Super Duty 455 aluminum blocks—lighter, hotter, and nearly impossible to cool with the era's hardware. It's a tour of ambition meeting constraints: fashion versus longevity in vinyl roofs, engineering prowess versus budgets and rulebooks in outlaw muscle. As we head to the end of the year, with new 2026 models out or on the way, many buyers are looking for end of year deals.  We are doing a review of some of our reviews of popular models, just in case....A trail tamer or a family hauler—what truly fits your life right now? We put two 2025 standouts under the microscope: Chevrolet's Colorado ZR2, a factory-built off-road machine with real armor and beadlock-capable wheels, and Kia's Sorento SX Prestige with the X Pro package, a smart three-row SUV tuned for comfort, tech, and daily ease. Along the way, we unpack the details that matter beyond the brochure: how the ZR2's underbody camera and rocker protection change your confidence on rocky terrain, why the lifted suspension improves clearance but complicates step-in height, and how the TurboMax four-cylinder's 430 pound-feet moves the truck even when it sounds busy.Shift to the Sorento and the vibe changes. Dual 12.3-inch panoramic displays streamline navigation and driver info, while a digital rearview mirror widens your view in traffic. Heated and ventilated seats in both the front and second-row captain's chairs elevate comfort, and rear door sunshades beat tint when you don't want darkness at night. On the road, 17-inch wheels with taller sidewalls calm bumps and cut harshness in a way low-profile tires rarely can. With up to 4,500 pounds of towing in the 2.5-liter turbo AWD setup, the Sorento handles small trailers and weekend projects without drama, and city maneuverability stays stress-free.We also get practical about numbers. The Colorado's ZR2 pricing reflects serious hardware and a 7,700-pound tow rating when equipped, all in a package that still fits a standard garage. The Sorento's value story spans from accessible base models to a feature-rich SX Prestige around the high $40Ks as tested, competing in a crowded segment with a flexible third row that doesn't feel oversized. By the end, you'll know whether your miles call for rock gardens and skid plates or a calm commute with room for kids and cargo. If you enjoyed this breakdown, follow the show, share it with a friend who's shopping, and leave a quick review to help others find us. With the weather changing toward Winter, it is a good time to check our batteries, so we decided to revisit an earlier discussion to start ... the discussion.Ever wonder why your car starts strong some mornings and struggles on others? We take you under the hood of battery choices that actually affect daily reliability, from budget-friendly picks at big-box stores to premium designs built for harsh conditions, high-current audio builds, and weekend toys that sit for weeks at a time. Our goal is simple: help you pick a battery that fits your vehicle, your climate, and your lifestyle without wasting money on features you don't need.We move brand by brand through a no-nonsense ranking: EverStart and Interstate for accessible value, Motorcraft and AC Delco for OEM confidence, Bosch for dependable mid-tier coverage, and Antigravity for lithium lightness where every pound counts. For enthusiasts and workhorses, we break down why XS Power and Odyssey excel under heavy loads and frequent deep cycles, and how their warranties and construction translate into fewer headaches over years of use. Then we spotlight DieHard's enduring reputation and Optima's spiral-wound advantage, explaining RedTop vs YellowTop vs BlueTop so you match cranking power, deep-cycle resilience, and marine readiness to the job at hand.Along the way, we unpack AGM versus traditional flooded lead-acid, when lithium makes sense, and how to read warranty terms that actually protect you. We also cover practical buying tips: verifying group size and reserve capacity, understanding OEM recommendations, and deciding when paying more now saves you from a tow later. We sit down with the Bastrop Car Cruisers to map the two‑day plan: a laid‑back Friday cruise‑in and a sold‑out Saturday showcase capped at 400 cars. They walk us through the choreography you never see—numbered curbs, early‑morning parking crews, tight coordination with police and fire, and a judging system that keeps 33 classes fair by sending the same judges to the same cars. The result is a show people trust, and it fills fast.Bastrop's character powers the experience. Main Street is dense with restaurants and boutiques, the museum opens its doors to veterans, and the courthouse memorial anchors a veterans march led by bagpipers and ROTC. Proceeds fund veteran services, local food pantries, and automotive scholarships, backed by sponsors like Craig's Jewelry and Covert Chevrolet and a long list of donors fueling a silent auction. It's a reminder that great car shows don't just entertain—they invest back into the people who make them possible. We also take a detour into the “good old days” of buying a car with real window stickers from a Mach 1 Mustang, a C3 Corvette, and more—when destination charges were $74, $5 bought antifreeze, and $188 got you a four‑speed. Then we hand you five fall routes tailor‑made for sports cars and copilots: Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Skyway into Nantahala, Talimena Scenic Byway, Arkansas's Pig Trail, and Scenic Highway 7. If you run an RV, marine, or powersports dealership, this is a tactical map for smarter inventory, sharper marketing, and better show results.Shannon explains how their team blends DMV records with first-party search and click data to show what's actually selling and what shoppers are hunting for right now. We walk through concrete use cases: choosing which units to haul to a combined auto and boat show, balancing new versus pre-owned mix by neighborhood, and targeting local demographics with creative that speaks to real buyers. We also talk access and privacy—why Statistical Surveys serves businesses, how private info stays protected, and how a Carfax-like history layer is rolling out for marine listings to help reduce risk for buyers and sellers.Beyond the interview, we round out the episode with racing highlights, a tour through pivotal auto history moments—from early EV experiments and Ford's moving assembly line to OPEC's shock and Tesla's supercharger buildout—and timely industry news, including supply chain impacts to aluminum-bodied trucks and a major lending investigation. The throughline is simple: when you align registrations (what sold) with marketplace intent (what's about to sell), you make better calls, faster. Ever felt your stomach drop at the top of a blind hill? We handed the wheel to Olivia, a 21-year-old nursing student and brand-new Bronco owner, and watched a long day in the Texas Hill Country turn nerves into mastery. With guidance from veteran auto journalist Sue Mead, Olivia moves from classroom theory to real trail work—learning why GOAT Modes matter, how hill descent control actually feels, and where a forward-facing camera turns guessing into precision. The payoff arrives on a feature aptly nicknamed “roller coaster,” when faith in the process replaces fear of the unknown. We dig into what the Bronco Off-Roadeo delivers for drivers at every level: structured coaching, expert spotters, and a terrain course designed to show how lockers, low range, and smart calibration create grip when the world tilts. New Bronco owners get a complimentary pass within a year, but anyone can book a half-day program and bring guests along. Beyond the dust, the skills transfer directly to night drives on unlit back roads and winter commutes—scan wider, place tires deliberately, and keep momentum measured. Olivia's biggest takeaway is simple and powerful: the vehicle doesn't want you to crash, but it's your steady hands and clear head that make the difference. Then we pivot from trail to tarmac nostalgia with a frank look at muscle cars that wore the jacket but didn't have the jab—emissions-era legends that taught us the cost of letting marketing outrun engineering. To close, we map five Oktoberfests worth your miles—from La Crosse's riverside tradition and Denver's keg bowling to Fredericksburg's Hill Country polka, Helen's Bavarian lean-in, and Cincinnati's colossal Zinzinnati celebration. Come for the Bronco insights, stay for the car culture stories, and leave with a plan to drive smarter on every surface. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves the Bronco or good car stories, and drop us a review with the one off-road feature you can't live without.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Navigating the murky waters of auto body repairs just got easier thanks to an innovative approach that puts transparency and consumer choice at the forefront. Ilan Mandil, founder of OttoFixIt, joins us to unveil how AI technology is revolutionizing the way drivers approach collision repair estimates. By simply snapping photos of vehicle damage, consumers can now receive preliminary cost projections before setting foot in a body shop – finally addressing the anxiety-inducing question: "How much is this going to cost me?"The conversation dives deep into the stratified world of auto body shops, from manufacturer-certified facilities using exclusively OEM parts to independent shops with varying quality standards. Mandil expertly breaks down how OttoFixIt vets repair facilities (requiring 4.5+ star ratings across hundreds of reviews) and why having multiple quotes empowers consumers to make informed decisions based on their specific circumstances and vehicle value. Jeff shares a cautionary tale about his Cadillac SRX repair gone wrong, highlighting exactly why finding reputable repair shops matters. Our journey through automotive culture continues with Jeff's fascinating exploration of badge engineering – the practice of selling identical vehicles under different brand names. From the embarrassing Cadillac Cimarron (a glorified Chevrolet Cavalier) to Volkswagen's triple-identity vehicles and GM's global rebadging strategies, we uncover how manufacturers have sometimes confused consumers with their marketing sleight of hand. The episode rounds out with Marrs' entertaining guide to the Texas State Fair, featuring everything from the iconic Big Tex statue to butter sculptures, thrilling rides, and of course, the comprehensive auto show. The century-long story of how we value cars has dramatically shifted from dog-eared pages to digital databases. Before the internet, car dealers, buyers, and even divorce courts relied on physical booklets like Kelly Blue Book and NADA guides to determine fair market prices. These guides weren't just reference materials—they were essential tools that brought transparency to a notoriously opaque market.NADA began tracking vehicle values in 1922, creating a standardized system that expanded far beyond dealership lots. During World War II, as manufacturing materials were diverted to the war effort, these guides became crucial in preventing price gouging when used car demand skyrocketed. Even government assistance programs consulted these books when determining eligibility, considering vehicle value as part of an applicant's assets. The digital revolution changed everything. What started with experimental floppy disks and CD-ROMs in the 1990s evolved into sophisticated online platforms delivering real-time valuations based on multiple factors. By 2017, the last physical guides rolled off the presses, marking the end of an era but the beginning of a more efficient system for everyone involved in buying and selling vehicles. This week's episode also covers significant recalls, including a serious Ford steering column defect affecting over 115,000 vehicles. We play our popular "Guess the Sold Price" game with classics like a 1967 Mustang convertible and a stunning 1932 Ford Roadster with flames. Plus, we honor Tsutumo Tom Matano, the visionary designer of the Mazda MX-5 Miata who recently passed away at 78.Whether you're a car enthusiast, industry professional, or simply curious about automotive history, this episode offers fascinating insights into how technology continues to transform the way we value, buy, and sell vehicles. Randy Borchiding's colorful journey from model car enthusiast to custom paint specialist unfolds with charm and practical wisdom. What started with Testors spray cans and a childhood model contest victory evolved into a full-fledged career creating custom colors for show-stopping vehicles. Randy pulls back the curtain on his early days, revealing how he built his first professional paint booth using nothing more than PVC pipes, plastic sheeting, and box fans with air conditioning filters. "Don't feel like you can't accomplish something just literally in your garage because you don't have a $50,000 box," he encourages, sharing how cars painted in this humble setup went on to compete at prestigious shows like the Grand National Roaster Show. The science behind the art proves fascinating as Randy explains the critical role of temperature in modern urethane painting. Working in environments below 50 degrees can leave paint jobs permanently sticky or mushy – a costly lesson he learned firsthand. His process for creating custom colors evolved organically from customer requests to modify OEM shades, resulting in approximately 50 signature colors that he can reproduce consistently.Currently preparing a hot pink 1968 Roadrunner (aptly named "Ransberry") for the upcoming SEMA show, Randy shares the pressure and timeline of readying show cars for major events. His other project, a 1968 Oldsmobile convertible, demonstrates his versatility – maintaining period-correct aesthetics while incorporating modern performance with an LS3 engine disguised to look like an original Oldsmobile powerplant. The episode also features Jeff's Motor Minute discussing NASCAR's potential horsepower increase to 750 for the 2026 season, followed by Don's enthusiastic review of the 2025 Mazda MX5 Miata Anniversary Edition. Despite having just 181 horsepower, the Miata's exceptional power-to-weight ratio delivers thrilling performance with remarkable efficiency.Subscribe to the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show for more automotive insights, expert interviews, and honest reviews every Saturday from 10-noon Central Time on inwheeltime.com, YouTube, and Facebook.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Mercedes and Andy Lilienthal take us on an exhilarating journey through North America's longest road rally - the Alcan 5000. Covering a staggering 5,500 miles from Seattle to Alaska, this husband-wife team pushed their 2026 Honda Passport Trail Sport to its limits across punishing terrain and secured an impressive second-place overall finish. The conversation reveals the fascinating format of this epic adventure: daily time-speed-distance rally segments connected by long-distance travel through some of the continent's most remote regions. While competitors in the "unlimited" class relied on sophisticated rally computers, the Lilienthals triumphed in their "seat of pants" class using nothing more than a $6 calculator, a kitchen timer, and raw mathematical calculations.Their Honda Passport proved the perfect companion, conquering approximately 900 miles of dirt and gravel without a single flat tire. The couple details how they tackled optional "extreme control" routes that earned them the "Go Farther Award," including an expedition to the Arctic Circle through mud-drenched paths and treacherous conditions that left their vehicle "caked full of mud."Beyond the mechanical challenges, the couple shares insights into the human element of rally competition - how they navigate the pressure-cooker environment as partners, their strategies for effective communication under stress, and the camaraderie formed with competitors from around the world. With good humor, Andy admits that Mercedes "sits on the right of the car because she's always right."Having competed in both summer and winter Alcan rallies, the Lilienthals offer perspective on the additional challenges winter brings, from survival concerns in temperatures reaching -50°F to blizzard conditions and closed highways. Their experiences highlight the remarkable resilience required when facing nature's most extreme conditions.Whether you're a rally enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply curious about extraordinary automotive challenges, this conversation captures the spirit of pushing boundaries and finding joy in the journey. Buckle up for a deep dive into the automotive industry's latest battle with tariffs that could reshape how we buy and maintain our vehicles. Automakers and suppliers have formally urged the Trump administration to reconsider unpredictable tariff expansions, warning that these policies make investing in America increasingly difficult. The financial impact? A potential $4,600 price increase per vehicle within three years, according to the Center for Automotive Research—a sobering prospect when average new car prices already hover around $50,000.The conversation takes a personal turn as we explore the emotional versus practical considerations of keeping older vehicles. One host shares the dilemma of his daughter's beloved 2007 Ford Focus with 185,000 miles—is the sentimental value worth the maintenance costs and logistics of storing it for occasional use? This sparks a broader discussion about how consumers might adapt to rising costs, including a potential revival of salvaging parts from junkyards as repair expenses climb due to tariff-affected components. Our Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid review showcases why this three-row SUV deserves attention despite its $52,610 starting price. With actual adults fitting comfortably in the third row (thanks to its six-inch length increase over the standard Highlander), impressive fuel economy averaging 29.7 mpg over 475 miles, and what we call "the best-looking front fascia" in Toyota's lineup, it delivers substantial value for families needing space without sacrificing efficiency. The battle between dirt and asphalt tracks, the delicate ecosystem of regional racing, and the high-stakes fall racing season take center stage in this revealing conversation with motorsports commentator Rodney Rodriguez. As Texas transitions into fall, circle track racing enters its most exciting phase with championship battles heating up and big money events drawing competitors from across state lines. Rodriguez highlights the SuperTex 600 at Rocket Raceway Park—a minimal-rules competition offering a potential $25,000 prize—as an example of grassroots racing at its finest, where "you can damn near run anything you have" from bombers to modifieds.Behind this excitement lurks a troubling industry trend: historic venues like Devil's Bowl Speedway closing permanently, forcing racers to travel greater distances while remaining tracks fail to coordinate effectively. The podcast reveals how personal rivalries and business pressures prevent track operators from collaborating on schedules, ultimately hurting car counts and fan attendance. As Rodriguez explains, "Tracks intentionally scheduled on top of each other...that cuts your car count down, that cuts your fan count, it divides the racers."The conversation expands to critique both NASCAR's Next Gen car for being "too smart" and diminishing competition, and IndyCar's abbreviated season that causes the series to "fall off the map" despite having exceptional racing. These industry-wide challenges reflect a motorsport landscape at a crossroads—balancing tradition with innovation while fighting for audience attention.Whether you're a dedicated race fan or simply curious about the culture of American motorsports, this episode offers invaluable insights into the passion, economics, and challenges shaping racing's future. Episode 99: “A deep dive on Driving and Owning EVs with Dr. Karl Bloss from Consumers Energy ”In this episode, producer Phil Tower plus hosts Al Schwinkendorf and John Puhek welcome Dr. Karl Bloss, Consumers Energy's Electric Vehicle Education and Outreach Coordinator. As just about anyone who drives knows by now, electric vehicles have gone from being a rarity to almost commonplace road sight. In fact, Cox Automotive reports that in the second quarter of 2022, electric vehicle sales topped 5.6% of all new car sales. EVs are becoming mainstream. Still, these vehicles are far from standard, the innovation in this world has led to exciting technology jumps across the auto industry. Karl Bloss doesn't just talk about EVs but drives them. He has owned and used EVs for years. Karl told us he made the decision to go EV after spending time in Germany feeling the full cost impact of diesel vehicles. Even in those early days of EV technology (with the lower mileage capabilities), an EV made sense for him and his wallet. And that is even more true today. By the way, the percentage of electric vehicles on Michigan roads is in the single digits. But the percentage is expected to rise to between 15% and 25% by the decade's end.MI AUTOTALK FUN FACT: According to U.S. Department of Energy data from 2021 — the most recent numbers available — Michigan had 17,500 EVs, out of roughly 8.7 million vehicles registered. That means EVs accounted for about 0.2% of all vehicles in Michigan. Tony is an 18-year-veteran Car and Driver editor, writer, car reviewer, and the 19th editor-in-chief for the magazine since its founding in 1955. In this episode, Tony gives us an insider's look at Car and Driver's 16th running of Lightning Lap, an annual test of performance cars held at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 recorded the quickest time this year, lapping the 4.1-mile track in just 2 minutes and 38.6 seconds. The full package is available now on the Car and Driver website and in the February/March issue, which is available now everywhere magazines are sold. Tony told us that VIR is chosen for its length and variety of challenges and that VIR is widely considered to be America's toughest and most-demanding racetrack. This year's 16 Lightning Lap entrants were grouped by base price (which includes performance-enhancing options and has been adjusted for inflation), and their best times determined the finishing order. The goal is to boil down each vehicle's performance to a single number: the lap time.More Online:Lightning Lap 2023: The Hottest Cars on America's Toughest Track https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a42387169/lightning-lap-2023/Like us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/MichigansAutoTalkPodcastMichigan's AutoTalk podcast is available on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Audio, Spreaker.com, Deezer, and Podcatcher.Thank you for listening. Episode 96: “The Station Wagon Show: Country Squires, Roadmasters, Vista Cruisers, and whatever Clark Griswold drove”In this episode, producer Phil Tower plus hosts Al Schwinkendorf and John Puhek talk about the much-maligned but now making a comeback station wagon. We spend the first part of the episode talking about a very rare 1996 Buick Roadmaster that is up for auction on the Hagerty marketplace website. The 1996 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon was basically a Cadillac with a Buick nameplate. It was decked out with a plush cabin, and a massive V8 and it amazingly offered seating for eight thanks to a collapsible rear-facing third seat. And speaking of what's under the hood, this wagon has a 5.7-liter ‘LT1' V8 which was also found in the C4 Corvette. Buick stopped making this beastly wagon in 1996, marking the last full-size, body-on-frame, rear-wheel drive station wagon produced by an American automakerIt's interesting to note that station wagons reached their sales peak in 1976 when U.S. sales stood at 972,212 and accounted for 10% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. That same year, there were 62 station wagon models available to American car buyers. You read that correctly… 62 different station wagon models! We also talk about the amazing Ford Country Squire wagon... Another huge, best seller. And believe it or not, there seems to be a resurgence in wagons so to speak, including the diehards to attend the Radwood Festivals around the country. And this wouldn't be a show about station wagons if we didn't talk about the iconic and lovably ridiculous Griswold Family Truckster wagon. Oh, yes, we went there. And then Al decided to reminisce about the amazing HearseFest. Episode 95: “Tricked out Ford Broncos and the women who love and drive them” In this episode, producer Phil Tower welcomes back one of our favorite guests, automotive writer and reporter, Phoebe Wall-Howard from the Detroit Free Press. (Freep.com )Phoebe recently wrote a very cool story in the Detroit Free Press about how women love their new Ford Broncos so much that they're “pouring thousands of dollars into their brand-new SUV to make it even better.” Phoebe told Michigan's AutoTalk that some women trick out the vehicles themselves while others have actually created or grown companies. Much of the “tricking out” of these new Broncos often includes a new paint job, replacing doors, replacing fenders, replacing tires, replacing guard plates under the belly of the vehicle, adding lights, and changing engine guts under the hood. In her story, Phoebe profiled several women owners of the new Ford Bronco in the common theme throughout the article was how much these women loved this vehicle. As Phoebe writes, ‘Jeep owners who spend their days crawling rocks and snaking through dirt roads or gliding across sandy beaches have been doing this kind of thing forever. But, now, the new Bronco crowd is all in, too.' More online:Read the story in the Detroit Free Press. Episode 92: “An insider's look at the contenders for Road and Track magazine's 2023 Performance Car of the Year awards.”In this episode, producer Phil Tower welcomes Mike Guy editor-in-chief of Road & Track . He was the founder and former editor-in-chief of The Drive. Prior to starting The Drive, Guy was the digital director of Maxim and an articles editor at Details. Mike also served as an editor and feature writer for Rolling Stone.Mike joined Phil in this episode to talk about the process that Road and Track go through every year to select their annual Performance Car of the Year winner. And trust us, there will be no surprises about their pick given the car's sheer power and prowess. The 2023 Performance Car of the Year is the 10th annual testing and ranking of Road and Track's favorite new sports cars on the road. Mike reminded us that the typical life cycle of some performance cars is roughly 10 years. As an example, one of this year's performance car of the year contenders, the Lamborghini Huracán, is slated to close out its stellar 10-year run in 2024, For this year's selection of nominees they chose one of the last Huracán variants—the $300,000-plus Tecnica model. Mike said the entire R&T staff flew in from around the country to gather at Monticello Motor Club in upstate New York. His team spent a couple of days putting the car through the paces on the race track and then turned their attention to road performance. Mike noted that, unlike Michigan, the roads in upstate New York are pristinely maintained and are great for road testing vehicles that road and track magazine writers write about on a regular basis.Mike said that ultimately, in choosing performance car of the year, it's not only numbers he and his team of writers are after but a “feeling” as well. And the winner for R&T's 2023 Performance Car of the Year… was the Ferrari from Bowling Green, Kentucky. You got that right… the Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
