Originally released in January 2023, CW: SA, violenceOn June 23 1993, after enduring years of physical and emotional abuse, Lorena Bobbitt infamously cut off the p*nis of her sleeping husband, John Wayne Bobbit. The case instantly becomes content for the 24 news cycle and a joke for late night comedians but the backstory is much more sinister. In this episode, we will discuss how Lorena was a victim of domestic abuse during a time when there were no laws and few systems in place to protect or help women stuck in dangerous relationships. We will also examine the trials of John and Lorena, gender bias in the media and the court room, domestic violence and the difficulty of leaving abusive situations. Lastly, we'll go over why this story is still important to talk about thirty years later and ask whether there are more options now than there were then. Sources: Bell, Rachael. It wouldn't be a Thursday afternoon without a fresh episode of Real Life to massage your earholes and help you get through the rest of the work week. The boys covered a wide range of topics on the second episode of the week, so if you're looking for 200 topics crammed into a single hour, this is the episode for you. The guys started the second episode of Real Life of the week with a conversation about Chalmers rolling into the studio with a bottle of water, a sizeable departure from his usual rye and coke. That led the guys to talk about Chalmers' sleeping habits and how he often turns to Candy Crush to help lull him to sleep. Talking about sleep led the fellas to discuss their night routine, including another discussion about duvets and pillow selection. From there, the podcast really fell off the rails. Not only were the guys unable to stick to one topic for more than a few seconds, but they also fell into more than a few rabbit holes all over the map. From Halloween costumes to studio upgrades to bodily functions, the middle section of the podcast was a complete disaster in the best possible way. If you love randomness on the podcast, you're in for a treat.Turning the podcast back to sports, the guys worked through a list of topics in the Keep It or Cut It segment. From new power play lines to Canada's jerseys to Bronny James' NBA debut to the Clippers' new stadium in Los Angeles, the sports talk was the first time the boys could stay on track. As you'll hear, the boys had plenty to talk about when it came to basically any sport you could imagine.

It wouldn't be a Thursday afternoon without a fresh episode of Real Life to massage your earholes and help you get through the rest of the work week. The guys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life with some playoff baseball talk, including which teams are acceptable to cheer for with the Jays failing to make the postseason. Considering some of the storylines happening in the baseball postseason, Tyler offered his takes on who we should be rooting for and who we should be cheering against.Changing gears, the guys kicked off some hockey talk with a discussion about the Jeremy Swayman situation in Boston and how that contract negotiation is turning toxic in a real hurry. Seeing as Swayman and Stuart Skinner are the same age and in nearly the same situation, Oilers fans should be watching this situation very carefully since this could become a direct comparable at contract time.Midway through the goalie contract conversation, Jay walked into the podcast studio with a jar of pickles and completely derailed the conversation. After a quick pickle food review, the guys pivoted into a conversation about what flavour and type of chips reign supreme. As far as pointless chats go, the chip debate was as pointless as it gets. The podcast then got real when Chalmers told a story about his wife's secret sibling that no one knew about. As you'll hear, the story of having a lost sibling connect after all these years of not knowing each other is almost unbelievable but truly exciting. The funny part about the revelation was that Chalmers wasn't sure if the boys would want to hear the story even though it's probably the realest Real Life story ever. Finally, the fellas wrapped up the Thursday episode with another round of Keep It or Cut It. Tyler pitched a few different scenarios for the boys to keep or cut, including some MLB playoff talk, the Amazon Prime NHL docuseries, and whether or not Noah Philp has done enough in the pre-season to earn a spot with the Edmonton Oilers.

So what are we to do with all the waste? Tossing empty iced coffee cups, peanut butter jars and blueberry containers into a recycling bin might seem like the obvious solution. But while the plastics industry has been working hard to promote recycling as a fix since the ’70s, it turns out our recycling systems are not equipped to handle the various plastics we use. “Think of your own home. On top of your washing machine, you probably have a bright orange, hard plastic detergent bottle. And then in your refrigerator, you might have a squeezable clear ketchup bottle. Those two plastic containers cannot be recycled together,” said Judith Enck, founder of Beyond Plastics and former regional administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. On the show today: the fundamental problems with plastic recycling and the ubiquitous chasing-arrow symbol, and what we should do about it. Then, we’ll discuss Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s visit to China, and why it may be time for Chinese officials to make a visit of their own. And is Yahoo is making a comeback? Later, we'll hear some listeners' thoughts on robotaxis. And this week's answer to the Make Me Smart question comes from one of the economists behind our favorite nerdy econ game, Tradle. Here’s everything we talked about today: “Plastic Recycling Doesn’t Work and Will Never Work” from The Atlantic “Toward a circular economy: Tackling the plastics recycling problem” from The Conversation “The recycling myth: A plastic waste solution littered with failure” from Reuters “Decades of public messages about recycling in the US have crowded out more sustainable ways to manage waste” from The Conversation “The Plastics Industry’s Long Fight to Blame Pollution on You” from Tahe Intercept “What a reporter learned after cataloging her plastic use for a week” from Marketplace “UN Agency Provides Path to 80 Percent Reduction in Plastic Waste. Recycling Alone Won't Cut It” from Inside Climate News “U.S. Does Not Want to ‘Decouple' From China, Raimondo Says” from The New York Times “How Yahoo is coming back from the dead” from Axios We want to hear your answer to the Make Me Smart question. Dr. Bruce Damer is a biologist, computer scientist, and director of the BIOTA Institute at UC Santa Cruz with a compelling theory for the origin of life on Earth. Damer and his colleagues have proposed that life didn't begin at the bottom of the ocean, or at a hydrothermal vent, or in the irradiated clouds of the early Earth. They propose the formation of the earliest cells out in the open, at the margins of vernal pools filled with amino acids, minerals, and proto-nucleotides rained down on Earth in the form of micrometeorites. We talk about the hardest questions on Earth, why hydrothermal vents are a dead end, why origin of life researchers don't throw hot coffee at each other any more, and how figuring out where we came from might let us keep going for long enough to reach the stars. When 10% Won't Cut It, You Need InfiniteGood morning my friend! Today's dose of hope is three things you SHOULD NOT do after you experience trauma, tragedy, or other massive things (TMT's). * Do not think that the goal is to get back to “how I used to feel.” It's not possible. You're changed by TMT, but you CAN learn to be happy again. It will be different, but it can also be beautiful.* Do not turn your pain into an idol that defines the rest of your life. * Do not put on a fake smile and pretend you're okay. You need to heal. A good place to start the healing is to learn the treatment plan I teach you in my new book, Hope Is the First Dose.Today's podcast is a great look at these three “don't do's” after TMT. Here's a computer-generated transcript for those of you who don't like to listen. Here's a few fun things for you!You can now order tee shirts and other gear from the podcast and my books! Check out the store here:And we have a new YouVersion/Bible App 5-Day Bible Study available now! Finally, my new book is coming out on Tuesday, July 18! Two more days! You can pre-order Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things! Coming July 18 everywhere books are sold. There are major bonuses you can get by pre-ordering, including a great playlist of hopeful songs, three chapters of the book, lock screens for your phone, and more! It's a fact, friend: life's going to bring you trauma and tragedy and other massive things, but it's also going to offer you hope, healing, and happiness. You can have both. And I'm going to teach you how. It's not about equipoise, it's about hope. The good news is, you can start today!Remember, friend: you can't change your life until you change your mind. I'm here to remind you that there is a treatment plan. Netflix's new reality show Jewish Matchmaking, a follow-up to its hit series Indian Matchmaking, follows Orthodox matchmaker Aleeza Ben Shalom as she helps Jewish singles find their beshert, or soulmate. While Indian Matchmaking documents contemporary approaches to an ancient custom, Jewish Matchmaking finds Aleeza applying the principles of an age-old tradition to modern courtship with a cohort of mostly non-Orthodox Jews. The show includes a wide variety of Jewish traditions and practices: Sephardic, Ashkenazi, and Mizrahi; secular, “flexidox,” and observant. But there are also notable limits to the diversity—particularly on the question of Zionism—and the show's picture of Jewish life is strikingly insubstantial. On this week's episode of On the Nose, editor-in-chief Arielle Angel, managing editor Nathan Goldman, associate editor Mari Cohen, and news editor Aparna Gopalan discuss the questions Jewish Matchmaking raises about contemporary Jewishness, dating, and the relationship between endogamy and ethnonationalism. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).” Articles and Podcast Episodes Mentioned:“Two Paths for the Jewish Bachelor Contestant,” On the Nose“Is He Jewish?,” Mari Cohen, Jewish Currents“What We Talk About When We Talk About ‘Intermarriage,'” Jewish Currents“Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match,” Hannah Jackson, The Cut“It was the million-selling novel that shaped a generation of Jews — does anyone still read it?,” Jenny Singer, The Forward“Couples Therapy,” On the Nose

On June 23 1993, after enduring years of physical and emotional abuse, Lorena Bobbitt infamously cut off the p*nis of her sleeping husband, John Wayne Bobbit.
