What if the United States could peacefully resolve its deep political rifts through secession? Dr. Jason Sorens, a leading expert on secessionism and author of the book Secessionism, joins the pod to discuss the legal, historical, and cultural dimensions of secession in America. The contentious idea has gained renewed interest following Donald Trump's re-election in 2024, and we examine the complexity of secessionist movements from California to Texas to Cascadia and more. Recognizing the confines of the Supreme Court's defining 1869 Texas v. White ruling about the legality of secession, we question whether a breakup might actually bridge the political chasm dividing progressives and conservatives across the nation. We also discuss the dynamics shaping current secession discourse, from the redrawing of state boundaries to the culture clashes within states that complicate these efforts. Drawing comparisons with international movements, such as Greenland's path to greater independence and the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Dr. Sorens provides a nuanced perspective on the potential paths states might consider. We examine the challenges of forming new nations and the delicate balance between self-determination and the cohesion required to sustain a united country. Finally, we dig into the relationship between partisanship and polarization in America, contemplating whether secessionist rhetoric is merely a symptom of deeper societal divides. With examples like Vermont's quest for greater policy autonomy, we consider innovative solutions that focus on self-governance as an alternative to outright separation. Ultimately, our conversation seeks to answer this question: can unity be achieved through separation?-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

Today, you'll learn about 17 things to see and do in Wexford, Ireland. Just in time for my Celtic Invasion of Wexford that happens in June. I share one of the best ways to make effective climate change happen along with an easy personal change. And you'll hear music from Kinnfolk, Tarren, and Erin Ruth. This is Folk Songs & Stories #294 0:22 - Tarren “Sunk” from Outside Time 4:54 - WELCOME TO FOLK SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. I'm a Celtic and Folk musician and also host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, an hour-long radio show of some of the best indie Celtic music online. That was… If you're new to this show, please subscribe. You can do that PubSong.com or Just send an email to follow@celtfather. I had hip replacement surgery on the 13th of January. It's incredible that two weeks later I'm up and walking around. Yeah. I got a gruesome scar, but the medical professions are just amazing. The big challenge, of course, is that I haven't had time to work on podcasts or music or much of anything else. I'm largely exercising and taking care of my family. All while trying to ignore the pain. Sleeping is one of the worst parts of it all. But I'm hoping to get some new medicine that might make me at least a little bit more comfortable. So that said, I realized the Brobdingnagian Bards' Kickstarter is now delayed a couple months. Andrew and I planned to get together in person to record in February. I don't think it's gonna happen. Tho there's still a small possibility. In the meantime, we are planning to get together in April to record when I head to Texas for Sherwood Forest Faire. But that also didn't stop me from launching Another Kickstarter. This one is for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It funds a CD and Album Pin and other merch to promote the podcast with a really cool design that reads “Celtic Forever”. I'll tell you more about that in a little bit. But if you want to support the Kickstarter, I would greatly appreciate it. Follow the link in the shownotes. But before we goton with the show, I have a really important way for you to fight climate change. It all begins with your local government. The current administration is dismantling all the good climate progress we had these past few years. But that just reminds me that since the beginning of our country, there's been a big discussion about States Rights vs Federal Rights. States Rights was a big issue when our nation started. I'm learning more about that as I help my daughter with American History. While I think some issues like Climate Change progress should be national, that's not the way America will work for the next four years. We need to take it local. I heard about a recent analysis, state and local programs, such as improved building efficiency standards and ambitious renewable energy adoption targets. They have the potential to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by up to 62%. You can join a local group. Or you can talk to your city legislators or county or state legislators. If enough of us reach out locally, we can make change happen in our physical communities. Which will blossom up to our State and hopefully eventually our National. Start small. Start local. That idea was inspired while reading One5C, a website that shares climate news and actions. Bring your water bottle (or reusable mug) everywhere One of the biggest challenges in terms of both climate change and overconsumption is the world's dependence on single-use plastic. It's a dilemma in terms of fossil fuel use, pollution, ecosystem destruction, human health, and more. According to the U.N., 1 million plastic bottles are purchased every single minute across the world, and half of all plastic produced is used just once and then thrown away. The easiest thing we can do right this moment is make sure to grab your water bottle or coffee cup whenever you leave the house. You never know when thirst will strike, and bringing your own container no matter the destination takes away the need to buy something you'll just toss when it's empty—a win for both your wallet and the planet. 11:21 - Marc Gunn “Kilty Pleasure” from Selcouth Listen to the full story of “Kilty Pleasure” on show #251. You can hear the complete list of songs and tunes on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcasts Celtic Top 20 of 2024 #691. And if you check out show #695 Celtic Forever, you'll hear other tracks from these amazing Celtic artists. So why Celtic Forever. It goes back to the last song I featured earlier, “Kilty Pleasure”. Then I'm off to the pub or the fair or the fest A wee swing goes into each step ‘Cause I'm American born and Celtic forever And both are truly blessed I was trying to use that phrase to promote Selcouth with an album pin for the past couple of years. But the ideas just weren't working. Then Christopher Toler made the Cat in front of a Celtic Moon design that inspired the compilation artwork. I love the Album Pin design. So when you support the Album Pin on Kickstarter, you will get both the 14 track compilation, plus you'll get my album, Selcouth, as a bonus gift. 19:54 - THANK YOU GUNN RUNNERS Your generous support on Patreon is how I make a living with music. This week on The Learning Curve, co-hosts Alisha Searcy of DEFR and retired MN Justice Barry Anderson interview Dr. David Heidler. He discusses the transformative period of Jacksonian Democracy, from 1829 to 1837. Dr. Heidler explores the political changes, sectionalism, and reforms that characterized the era, alongside the controversial figure of Andrew Jackson, whose volatile nature and strategic political management propelled his rise and image. Heidler delves into Jackson's presidential campaigns, his party's appeal to diverse coalitions, and the significant role of slavery, particularly in the wake of events like Nat Turner's 1831 slave rebellion. He also examines Jackson's relationships with prominent statesmen like Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun; his influence on Indian removal policies leading to the Trail of Tears; as well as the divergent constitutional views of figures like the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and the states' rights advocate, Calhoun. Dr. Heidler underscores how history, classic literature, and slave memoirs can enhance understanding of Antebellum America. He discusses the importance of examining the economic impact of immigration and transportation innovations, and highlights the influence of civic associations, religious movements, and communication advancements on the period's social reforms and democratic spirit. In closing, Dr. Heidler reads a passage from his coauthored book, The Rise of Andrew Jackson: Myth, Manipulation, and the Making of Modern Politics.

Today, the words “federalism” and “originalism” are bandied about in the news almost daily, but to get at the underpinnings of these modern interpretations of constitutional law, it is essential to look at how the Constitution was being interpreted and applied during the crucial period of 1815-1861, between the end of the War of 1812 and the beginning of the Civil War.Early nineteenth-century Americans found themselves consumed by arguments about concurrent power—the areas in which the Constitution had left the line between federal and state authority unclear. The scope of specific concurrent powers became increasingly important, and controversial, in the early nineteenth century. In 1815, the most pressing political and legal issues increasingly concerned situations in which multiple layers of governmental power overlapped—and the Constitution provided no clear delineation. Moreover, the choice of which level of government regulated each subject had dramatic consequences for the policy that resulted. To explore this topic is today's guest, Alison LaCroix, author of “The Interbellum Constitution: Union, Commerce, and Slavery in the Age of Federalisms.” We see just how deeply these constitutional questions dominated the discourse of the time.

Episode 223 is the second of a series of episodes where we begin to explore the radical right groups of the 1960's that clearly had great motive to murder president Kennedy. Emerging, alongside civil rights leaders, as a prime target for ire of white racists,  anti-communists, and and a wide variety of other conservative groups, President Kennedy was a a target among them all. This aspect of the assassination and the connection of the radical right is little explored.  We started  many episodes back, with the story of Joseph Milteer but its rather easy to pull on that string and find much more underneath the covers.  Part 2 of this new wander addressed the National States Rights Party and continues the review of the five  key organizations, amongst a plethora of radical right organizations, that are relevant to the JFK story. They are the KKK, The John Birch Society, the White Citizens Councils, The National States Rights Party and the Minutemen. These handful of groups were intertwined with men who weaved their way in and out of the shadowy existence of this intense resistance to societal change. The story is not faceless, and we will introduce many of the key characters in this series of episodes that were key to understanding how the radical right may have participated in the JFK Assassination. But first lets explore a bit about these organizations as we go deeper and deeper and connect the players.Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over  the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it,  were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This  real-life story is more fascinating than fiction.  No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as  we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

The GOP are narrowing in on this year's presidential candidate, and former President Donald Trump has been the loudest frontrunner from the beginning. As popular as Trump has been, his official nomination has yet to be finalized – and no one is sure if Trump can legitimately run. After initially denying to hear a case regarding insurrection as grounds to invalidate Trump from running, SCOTUS is now being pushed to rule on the matter after Trump urged them to repeal Colorado's decision for violating the 14th Amendment. Do states have the power to disqualify candidates from national ballots? Today host Jack Russo asks Professor Robert Acker if the Supreme Court can unify under a unanimous 9-0 decision regarding state's rights in a presidential election.   Jack Russo Managing Partner Jrusso@computerlaw.com www.computerlaw.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackrusso "Every Entrepreneur  Imagines a Better World!"®

Constitutional Chats hosted by Janine Turner and Cathy Gillespie

We are wrapping up our series on the Bill of Rights with this special episode on the 10th Amendment.  In just 28 words, it grants tremendous powers not to the federal government but to the states.  How so?  Regular viewers of our chats know Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution grants 17 specific powers to Congress.  That's it.  The 10th Amendment says any powers not granted by the Constitution to the federal government are under the purview of the states or the people.  The Founders did this because they were wary of a strong central government, having just fought a war against a strong central government in King George III.  To help us unpack the ramifications and importance of the 10th Amendment, along with our all-star student panel we are delighted to welcome the 71st Governor of Virginia, The Honorable Robert F. “Bob” McDonnell as our special guest to discuss this special amendment.

For the last two years I have written showing you how much our current government in Washington, D.C. is acting exactly as King George III was back in the 18th century. While King George's actions led the colonies to declare independence, the states have not shown themselves as willing to defend their rights and those of their citizens. Why is that? I think the answer can be found in the Declaration of INdependence: accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. Could it be that all of the evils coming out of the federal government are still sufferable? Are the people will to suffer he ruling of judges, the monarchal actions of the President, Congress acting more like a House of Lords than the representative body it was created to be? Apparently they are. How long will this train of abuses have to grow before we throw off those in this tyrannical government and restore not only independence, but justice and liberty? What will it take for us to learn the truth of what Abraham Lincoln said: We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.

The fine economist and civil war era historian Tom DiLorenzo joined The Two Mikes today to discuss issues touching on both areas. Dr. DiLorenzo has just published a book named The Politically Incorrect Guide to Economics, which has received fifty-five 5-star reviews at Amazon. In talking about his book and the American economy generally, Dr. DiLorenzo said that it now should be obvious to all Americans that the "schemes and plans" of almost all post-Woodrow-Wilson U.S. Governments have been aimed at bringing Americans more and more under its control, just as its foreign policy -- it seems-- is still out to control the world. Quite simply the national government is "unsafe and dangerous ... its main purpose is to take bribes." On the pertinence of Civil War history to today's problems, Dr. DiLorenzo noted that Lincoln's administration entered the conflict in a situation where all three branches of the national government all participated in constitutional interpretation. By the end of the war, the Supreme Court had emerged with the sole responsibility for constitutional interpretation, leading to the current situation where we are ruled by that court, and nine people who have never been elected for anything. Dr. DiLorenzo also noted that the Lincoln administration put the 10th Amendment on the road to meaninglessness, which has led to fewer and fewer powers being lodged in the states and in the people. Today, a person raising the issue of states rights -- meant to guarantee against the tyranny of the national government earns the speaker charges of holding racist and pro-slavery views. Thomas Jefferson,Dr. DiLorenzo said, wanted all Americans -- the governors and the governed -- to be bound by the chains of the Constitution, and especially by the strong protections for liberty found in the 10th Amendment. This episode is a bit long, but we are betting that our audience always finds talks with Dr. Di Lorenzo to be easy and informative experiences.Dr. DiLorenzo's recent book on economics -- cited above -- is available at Amazon, Barnes Noble, and many other outlets. Among his provocative and highly common sense books on Lincoln and the Civil War era are: The Problem with Lincoln, The Real Lincoln, and Lincoln UnMasked, all which are available at Amazon, Barnes Noble, AbeBooks, Powell Books, and many other outlets. On today's Breitbart News Daily podcast, we begin with a guest, the brilliant Ken Klukowski, a legal contributor to Breitbart News and Trump administration alumnus. He breaks down all the crucial details of the unprecedented leak of the (apparent) draft of a Supreme Court opinion which perhaps would overturn abortion law as we know it. This could turn into one of the biggest stories of the decade. We also touch on what might happen next in the law and the culture as some on the Left passionately insist that the right to terminate life in the womb is sacred. Gruesome, gross, somewhat bizarre, yet sadly mainstream in the year 2022. Then, we speak to Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) about being the lone pro-life woman on the Senate Judiciary Committee. We get her reaction to the big breaking Supreme Court news, and then we get into the latest on Joe Biden's Ministry of Truth, shocking illegal alien border crossing numbers, and much more.
