18WT 063: So many people see trucking as a great opportunity. So they go and get trained either paying themselves for a trucking school, or going through a company and having them pay. Then they get their money back through a 2 year contract typically. Then a few months after training and into their very first otr job, they find out just how difficult truck driving is. Mentally, physically, and emotionally especially if they have family at home. Let's be honest, kids just don't understand the parent being gone for weeks on end. And that is how you make the money. Then there is the point of view of the trucking company. These big companies are willing to train the new people to drive, but people wonder why they pay so low to being with. The reason seems to be that so many new drivers' leave after 6 months of being on their own behind the wheel and being gone from home and learning more about driving and breakdowns, hours of service, split sleeper, and find out that driving is a hard job. They go find jobs driving locally for smaller companies and places like Amazon and UPS. Then that typically leaves the big company out in the cold with a driver they paid to train, that left the company. And yes they no doubt send a bill for the schooling. I bet that is difficult to collect. On the other side you have a few really great companies that pay extremely well and have great benefits. However, you do not walk into those jobs straight out of school. You have to do your “time” as they say and pay your dues until you have enough experience to get into those companies. So, after speaking to drivers we have found that not much has changed with truck driving in one aspect, but really if you think about it, so much really has changed. Since trucks started hauling goods.Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e63 Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour. Steve Viscelli is a political sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania where he studies freight transportation and autonomous trucks. He's also the author of the book "The Big Rig: Trucking and the Decline of the American Dream" in which he explains how long-haul trucking went from being one of the best blue-collar jobs in the US to one of the toughest. His current book project "Driverless? Autonomous Trucks and the Future of the American Trucker" explores self-driving trucks and their potential impacts on labor and the environment. Steve has appeared on CBS News 60 Minutes and most recently on an episode of the Lex Fridman podcast. In this episode of The Logistics Tribe, Steve talks to our host Jonah McIntire about the following topics: - Steve's views on the common narrative that the truck transportation industry in the US is about 80.000 drivers short and that the shortage is only getting worse because many drivers are nearing retirement age - The problem of getting people into the profession vs. keeping people inside the profession - What the reasons are that a lot of drivers are leaving the trucking profession and what they are leaving the profession for - What Steve thinks about various initiatives from the current US administration, for example the "under 21 program" - What the wage and working conditions are really like in different segments of the truck driving business - How real is the infamous 80.000 driver shortage number? - How driver training programs work and how they need to be improved - Potential solutions to the various structural problems in the industry - What role existing and new technology can play - Why drivers are still paid by the mile and what problems arise from that approach - Why the driver shortage is a very "convenient narrative" - What influence can transportation procurement professionals play in improving driver conditions - and more Helpful Links: Steve Viscelli's website: https://www.steveviscelli.com/ Steve Viscelli's podcast episode with Lex Fridman: https://youtu.be/a3Wpy6gE4So Jonah McIntire (Hoste) on LinkedIn: https://nl.linkedin.com/in/jonahmcintire Boris Felgendreher (Founder of The Logistics Tribe) on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/borisfelgendreher/ Our great supporters GreyOrange: https://www.greyorange.com/ BVL Webinar “How flexible automation helped Jysk cope with the unexpected peaks during the pandemic and support their ecommerce growth” on Feb 24, 2022: https://bvl-digital.de/webinare/sendeplan/how-flexible-automation-helped-jysk-cope-with-the-unexpected-peaks-during-the-pandemic-and-support-their-ecommerce-growth/

Between Brexit and the pandemic, the UK is faced with a grim winter. For the immediate future, the government plans to issue 10,000 more visas to combat the shortage. But it waits to be seen, how the government will sort this shortage out in the longer term.NASA's LANDSAT 9 was recently launched into orbit. LLN (5/5/21) – The U.S. could be headed for fuel shortages this summer, but not because of a drop in supply. Groups say it’s due to a lack of qualified drivers. We’ll have a roundtable discussion on whether there is a fuel hauler shortfall, and if so, its possible short- and long-term effects and what can be done to reverse the trend. Also, freight and rates are a mixed bag for van and reefer, but flatbed is booming. And several of the largest carriers have pushed for years to increase the allowable size and weight of trucks on our highways, or to allow longer twin trailers. And for years, OOIDA has opposed the move. We’ll examine the issue – and a pilot program to test vehicle miles traveled taxes. 0:00 – Newscast. 10:15 – Tanker truck driver shortage? 25:05 – Flatbed is booming. 39:56 – Truck size and weight.

In this week’s episode, Chris is joined by a colleague at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics and fellow Research Scientist, Dr. David Correll. At MIT, Dave leads the FreightLab’s driver initiative which is focused on North American over-the-road truck drivers, and finding ways to increase utilization and profitability while also improving the driver experience. Chris and Dave discuss several research findings related to the alleged “driver shortage,” including Hours of Service (HOS) utilization, day of the week effects, and driver retention tactics. Dave goes on to explain why he believes there is a utilization crisis versus a driver shortage, and how it could be solved by each driver adding just 12 minutes a day. Stay tuned to the end, as Inam Iyoob joins Chris for the latest market update and rate forecast for the North American truckload market.
