featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 3108: Slug (song) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 7 November 2025, is Slug (song)."Slug" is a song by Passengers, a side project of musician Brian Eno and rock band U2. It is the second track on Passengers' sole release, the 1995 experimental album Original Soundtracks 1. The track was originally titled "Seibu" and was almost left off the album before it was rediscovered later during the recording sessions. Though Eno made most of the creative decisions during the sessions, "Slug" was one of the few tracks that the members from U2 tried to craft themselves.Lyrically, it portrays the thoughts of a desolate soul with the confusion of romance and faith. As Eno and U2 were writing songs for fictional soundtracks, they tried to create a visual suggestion from the music that was more important than the story within the lyrics. In "Slug", the instrumentation is intended as visual music representing the lights turning on in a city at night. The group primarily drew inspiration for the song from U2's experiences in Tokyo at the conclusion of their Zoo TV Tour in 1993. "Slug" was praised as one of the best songs on the album by critics from various publications, both at the time of its release and in retrospective reviews. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:31 UTC on Friday, 7 November 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Slug (song) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

A few things to look for in October: Passionvine Hoppers do a bit of damage from late October/Early November till March-April These are the problematic insects that are common in the north (and for the past few years, also around Christchurch – they're spreading South! Adult passionvine hoppers plus one nearly-mature fluffybum Most of the damage is cased when the bugs are growing bigger and older (later in spring); by then these insects can jump away from insecticides applied; they clever enough to avoid being immersed. CONTROL and PREVENTION: Keep an eye on the new fluffy bums hatching in your garden right now!!! Those tiny nymphs often congregate in large flocks at the ends of new growth; they are still very feeble in their movement and won't be able to escape a cloud of fly-spray aimed at them on a wind-still morning Spray these young Passionvine Hoppers in October with a good dose of fly-spray; your only chance to hit them before they become troublesome. Slugs and Snails are a real pest in the garden at this time of the year; moisture and new plant growth encourages them Control measures that work: Weed control will expose them to predators (thrushes) Using Bait pellets in a pottle, dug into soil: take-away container with lid on and bait inside; holes cut in the side of the container let slugs and snails in; but not dogs and cats Alternative version is to use some off-cuts (15-30 cm long) of plastic waste-pipe, diameter 50 to 75 mm, which allows access to slugs and snails, but not to birds. Put some bait in the pipes and anchor them down with a heavy brick Encourage Carabid beetles (Ground beetles): they often feed on slugs and snail juveniles and eggs Slug and Snail bait station And then there are Mites, especially Two-Spotted SPIDER MITES Tiny, eight-legged ACARI that love to suck the fluids out of the leaves of your plants in spring, summer and autumn. Tetranychus urticae is a cosmopolitan species of mite that causes heaps of damage. Control is not very difficult: there are some good miticides (note: miticides, not insecticides) on the market that will deal to most outbreaks. However, mites are known for becoming quite tolerant of chemical compounds. Mineral oils and the so-called fatty acids are also effective on spidermites, as is a couple of repeat sprays of Neem oil. Spook Retorts: UK not OK is back, along with Filip! And more importantly, SLUGS (sorry, Filip). That's right! Sam has decided to grace us with the 1985 sequel novel to Shaun Hutson's pulp fiction classic Slugs, the aptly named Breeding Ground. Also about slugs…but slugs who breed. They also have mind control. And sometimes they eat…you know what, let's start over. Picking up where the last book left off, probably, a slug is eaten off some cabbage by an unfortunate man who pretty immediately dies, luckily by a toilet, unleashing the slugs that have somehow grown in him, into the sewer system. The slugs, true to their book title, breed prolifically, and at speeds previously unknown to man, infecting the suburbs of London. But watch out, now that they're back, they're determined to be better than ever, using their mind control (?) powers to make their human incubators…murder each other? We are also perplexed on why you'd destroy the thing you use as a host, but we're not slugs. Also, sometimes they eat them sans breeding, just for funsies. Like a three-in-one deal. Join Sam as he chronicles a series of slug murders, Mind Ducks Books podcast host and slugspert, Filip, for Slug Fact Corner (doo doo doo doo doo doo doo) and Danielle, who's just around to question, once again, the abhorrent lack of salt. Will the slugs win out in the end? Will Shaun Hutson consider the best sequel name we've ever come up with as a contender for future Slug novels? Will they use a dozen unknowing human sacrifices to lure the slugs to their grave? Get your bacon sandwich and find out why the UK is definitely not OK. Special thanks to friend of the pod and honorary co-host Filip from Mind Duck Books for joining us!

From Puddle Jumper to Love Bug, or the proudly self-deprecating Rolling Turd, millions of Americans are naming their cars with a little personality. A new survey of 2,000 Americans found one in three has a nickname for their car, with Buttercup's Folly, The Slug and Old Flame some of the monikers dished out to vehicles. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, The NYPD is trying to force dozens of officers and recruits who failed to meet the department's standards to resign — but the effort faced a roadblock after a state judge blocked the move. Two men who went to prison as teenagers for a 1994 killing were exonerated Thursday, after prosecutors said new DNA testing and a fresh look at other evidence made it impossible to stand by the convictions. And in Washington, President Trump said in a letter that he will raise taxes on imported goods from Canada to 35%, deepening a rift between two North American countries that have suffered a debilitating blow to their decades-old alliance.

We've got a really big show for you this week. We have had the pleasure of interviewing Slug (and Ant, but never both together) of Atmosphere a few times. Atmosphere never quite got bigger than The Beatles (or breast implants) but there is no denying that over the last 30 years they have proven themselves to be one of the most consistent and prolific independent hip-hop groups of all time. Both gentlemen display a deep musical knowledge in their work, and on today's program we chat with Slug about his "easter egg" references, his connection with the storied concert venue Red Rocks, wellness on tour, and of course Atmosphere's next album, Jestures. Though the album will not drop for a few weeks, we preview its unique development process. Ant and Slug "gamified" their production on this record, making one song for each letter of the alphabet, one at a time, A-Z. Inspired by this approach, DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc recorded their longest intro segment ever, riffing on 26 rappers and their careers, also in alphabet (aerobics) order. I think it's pretty safe to say that you have never heard a podcast episode quite like this. Huge thanks to Slug for joining us, it was a real pleasure to speak with someone so thoughtful and self-deprecating while also being pretty darn successful in this niche of hip-hop that we we care about. Please catch Atmosphere on the Dank Days of Summer Tour with Cypress Hill, Lupe Fiasco and the Pharcyde, coming soon to a town near you. Dad Bod Rap Pod is bought to you by Stony Island Audio, the podcast network that values being "underground" for so long that the term loses all meaning.

Seed Saving, Slug Battles & A Summer Squash Supper – Episode 619

This week's episode of The Veg Grower Podcast is packed with jobs on the allotment, progress in the kitchen garden, and a listener's question about slugs. With summer harvests in full swing, it's been a busy and productive week – plus I share a recipe of the week while Chef Scott is away. Allotment Update The main focus on the allotment has been seed saving. I've been busy collecting seeds from peas and beans – always reliable and easy to do – as well as saving poppy seeds that appeared on the plot without me ever sowing them. I also talk through why saving squash seeds can be tricky due to cross-pollination, and why crops like carrots and parsnips need two years to produce viable seed. I share a past experiment with potatoes too – growing out “seed plants” to store tubers for replanting the following year, which worked surprisingly well. Of course, alongside seed saving, it's been the usual jobs of mowing, strimming, weeding, and watering in the warm weather. Kitchen Garden Update Back at home, I'm delighted to say the driveway project is finally finished after weeks of disruption. With resin-bonded paths and drive now complete, I've been able to put the garden back together. Waterbutts, sinks, and pots are gradually returning to their proper places, although a few plants are struggling after the hot, dry spells. Harvests have been plentiful – especially tomatoes – so a lot of batch cooking and freezing has been going on. I've also been busy potting up strawberry runners, moving baby plants into pots for next year's crops while their mother plants get ready for another season outside. Listener Question This week we had a voicemail from Melissa, who asked about slugs attacking her beans. I share a range of approaches, including: Growing young plants in trays protected with copper tape Encouraging wildlife such as frogs, birds, and hedgehogs Collecting slugs on evening patrols and feeding them to chickens Using beer traps or upturned pots as shelters Nematodes as a last resort Avoiding chemical slug pellets where possible Recipe of the Week With Chef Scott on holiday, I'm stepping in with a simple seasonal dish: Garlic & Herb Roasted Patty Pan Squash. These quirky little summer squashes are delicious roasted with olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs – perfect as a side dish or even the star of a light summer supper. Final Thoughts It's been a productive, rewarding week – saving seeds for the future, harvesting the best of summer, and finally reclaiming the garden after the driveway works. Tune in to hear more about the seed-saving process, how I'm dealing with slugs, and why patty pan squash deserves a place in every veg garden.

He says they're especially concerned about changes to inheritance tax reform.Scientists are working with farmers to find a high-tech way of tackling one of the most voracious pests farmers face - slugs. Traditionally, producers have used ferric phosphate pellets to kill them, or taken a more expensive but eco-friendly route, using nematodes to eat the pests. Now the British On-Farm Innovation Network or BOFIN for short, is using artificial intelligence as part of a "Slimers" project to work out where slugs are hiding.
