Today on the show we cover Dustin Ackley, former 2nd overall pick and UNC legend. Join us as we discuss his interesting draft class as well as an overview of his time in the MLB!
I recap this excellent road trip at the Tigers and Guardians, and I warn you, there is some Dustin Ackley talk, as well as some Shohei Ohtani discussions.P.S. Are the Yankees bad?
As Jarred Kelenic and other theoretical future Mariners All-Stars come off a great weekend, the calls of "Call them up!" get even louder, but there are perfectly reasonable justifications for keeping these guys down for a little longer. We've seen players like Dustin Ackley and Mike Zunino get rushed the Seattle, only to have trouble. Maybe it's not so bad to give guys who didn't have a real minor league season this year, who have never played at AAA, a chance to prove they can excel there. Look at it like a heat check in basketball. Make sure it's for real before putting all the pressure on them at T-Moblie Park. Watching the TBirds' Keltie Jeri-Leon play his last game for the WHL team, and seeing his reaction afterward reinforces just how powerful sports can be for many of us. Bob Baffert has a pretty odd excuse for his horse failing a banned substance test. Texts react to the show at 49451. Softy drops by before the afternoon show.
Co-hosts Max Schwabe, Chris Sobba and the Producer Evan Baron interview two guests for episode of 3 of the Monday Mojo Podcast. Jesse Smith is the Senior Director of Baseball Analytics for the Mariners. Jesse talks with us about the M's philosophy, and how analytics play a huge part in the MLB today. Joe Doyle is a Staff Writer at Lookout Landing and the Director of MLB Draft Content for Prospects Live. Joe chats with us about the future of the Mariners, the MLB Draft process, why the Mariners failed Dustin Ackley, and more.
Spike Friedman joins the podcast! It was great! Follow Spike on Twitter for a look into his brain, or on Instagram to see his dog Edgar Martinez Friedman. 0:00-11:45: Obviously, we start with some Kendall Graveman and Wally Joyner goss. As always, then we get into Spike’s entry point to Mariner fandom and reminisce about our favorite guys who weren’t actually very good. Then, somehow for the first time in this podcast series, we mourn the Ben Broussard trade. 11:50-25:15: A love letter to Bret Boone, one of the few people who was probably stoked to become a Mariner. Jerry Dipoto may not be as accomplished as John Schneider, but at least he’s not a movie quote frat bro. Spike shares the story of moving away from the Northwest in 1995, a year in which things happened. How the Mariners' rise mirrored that of grunge music. 25:20-34:40: The requisite Edgar Martinez appreciation chat. Spike’s highest volume of Mariner consumption did not coincide with wins. The same can sadly be said about or deposed king of pitching. We liken the final Félix game to the series finale of a beloved television show. 34:45-48:55: Going all in on…Bill Bavasi and falling victim to the quasi-gaslighting of the mid-2000s. If you’re playing a weird drinking game where you do a shot every time Jarrod Washburn is mentioned, pour up! Stupidly, we then talk about all of the Mariners’ draft failures. “This team ruined my life in many deep and profound ways […] horrible, darkness, tragedy.” 49:00-1:11:54: Carlos Triunfel, where you at? Matthew plugs his own Sporcle quiz, and Spike flexes his deep-rooted knowledge of Mariner shortcomings. To wrap things up, we talk about a Grantland article Spike wrote about Dustin Ackley in 2013, and put our hand longingly on the Cliff Lee window. It's a new Mariners season, and Ichiro is on the roster once again. Okay, it's not completely unreasonable for him to be there when the team plays in Japan later this month, especially with the three extra spots, but once they come back to the States? If the team wants to invest so heavily in young talent, let them play. Don't waste a roster spot on someone who won't be here in the future. More than anything though, it's about perception. This, plus the Dustin Ackley signing just give the optics of "the same old Mariners". Frank Clark got the franchise tag today, but will the Seahawks get a permanent deal done with him before the 2019 season starts? Former agent Joel Corry answers this, plus discussion of Russell Wilson's future, KJ Wright, and more. Textimonials flood in at 49451 with a chance to ask Mike Gastineau anything.

Then, Shannon also caught up with Ryon Healy to talk about his adjustments that he made in the offseason and what this Mariners team can accomplish this season. Rick Rizzs sits down with Dustin Ackley to get his thoughts on being back with the team that drafted him. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Garry Bettman is in town talking with the NHL Seattle folks today. He spent some time talking with the media about what's next for the development of the team, and the league in Seattle. For anyone not old enough to have been around when the Sonics, Mariners, and Seahawks were being developed, it's a unique experience to watch a franchise being constructed from the ground up in this town. Now that the Seahawks season is over, it's time to start looking ahead to what the Hawks can do to take the next step. Dick asked Twitter how they'd feel if they knew Tre and Shaq were the starting corners next year. The confidence wasn't overwhelming. Dustin Ackley is likely coming back to the Mariners. ...Really? From this, to Ichiro being on the roster in Japan, when was the last time the team did something that didn't make you snicker?

The MLB Trade Deadline has come and gone and the one move the Yankees made was to acquire Dustin Ackley. Scott and I were joined by Rich Kaufman to discuss all the rumors around the Yankees this week, what they did, what they didn’t do, and if we agree with them staying quiet at the deadline. We also discussed their strategy of keeping their prospects instead of trading it for short-term gain.
