PECOTA knows exactly what to do with the 2025 Seattle Mariners.3. The Houston Astros are worse and more interesting4. The Los Angeles Angels are exactly as good and exactly as uninteresting. 5. Once again, it's time for our MLB Preview Pods! We'll look at each division and talk about the good, bad, and downright confusing moves each team made this offseason. Next up, the AL Central:Remember when the White Sox weren't a laughingstock? Can Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton, and Royce Lewis stay healthy enough for the Twins to win the division? Why is Pecota so low on the TigersThe Royals are gonna be fun againAnd more!
In Episode 443, Patrick, Jeffrey, and Craig preview the American League East1. Yeah, the Orioles are projected for first place now. They probably should still be better than this2. The Toronto Blue Jays should see a bounce back, per PECOTA, less so per us.3. Okay this Yankees preview is gonna take a while now.4. The Rays might have a new owner soon, won't have a new stadium soon, will have the same Rays bullshit. 5. The Red Sox might be more than just frisky.Five and Dive is listener-supported, you can join our Patreon at patreon.com/fiveanddive. The Diamondbacks and Padres are very close by PECOTA, but Arizona feels much lower variance. 3. We have no idea what the 2025 San Diego Padres will be. 4. The Giants arent exactly rebuilding, but definitely aren't good.5. On this week's episode, we begin by looking at the PECOTA projections for the 2025 season, and whether or not we think each team are being fairly evaluated by the system. From there, we draft teams for our season long wins competition, and discuss Aaron Boone's extension with the Yankees, the Yankees new facial hair policy, billionaire Justin Ishbia pivoting from interest in the Twins to the White Sox, and MLB planning to end their long-standing relationship with ESPN as a game provider of the league.
The guys take a first look at MLB in 2025. We compare payrolls (Dodgers $304MM vs. Marlins $44MM) and win projections from PECOTA (Dodgers 104 vs. Rockies 55.) We then take a quick look at the forecasted starting lineups for our favorite teams-Brewers (Dad) and Reds (Bri) who are both projected to spend $100MM (tied for 22nd in MLB).
On this week's show, Jaymes and Ryan were joined by special guest Jonathan Judge to discuss all things PECOTA, including the Brewers .500 projection, some interesting individual projections and your listener questions.Support the podcast on Patreon and receive the Monthly Minor League Extra and Weekly Packers Preview.
Bri likes Chiefs to nip the Eagles 24-21 in Sunday's Super Bowl. PECOTA predicts the Brewers will win 80 games and the Reds will win 74 in 2025-both seem low to us. Bucks trade 12 year veteran Khris Middleton to the Wizards for Kyle Kuzma and stuff-Middleton is an all-time Bucks great (1st in franchise in 3's, 3rd in scoring, 3rd in assists), the end of an era.

After a long wait, it's time for the 2025 Chicago Cubs to hit the field! Pitcher and catchers are reporting today to the Cubs complex in Arizona. It's been a busy offseason for the Cubs front office. Cubs enter camp with way more bullpen arms than can be kept on the roster. Will talk about that and the starting rotation. Will the Cubs add anyone still (Bregman and Cease come to mind)? Only one is probably remotely close to happening. Pecota projections are already pretty favorable for the Cubs.

Hosts JR Radcliffe and Curt Hogg welcome in Jonathan Judge of Baseball Prospectus to get insight on the PECOTA rankings, which think the Brewers are a .500 team and well behind the Cubs in the National League Central. Why are the projections so bearish on the Brewers' offense, including Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio? Why is Garrett Mitchell so confounding to the projections system? Is there any signing the Brewers could make to improve their outlook? Are they doomed?

Being rational necessarily involves engagement with probability. Given two possible courses of action, it can be rational to prefer the one that could possibly result in a worse outcome, if there's also a substantial probability for an even better outcome. But one's attitude toward risk -- averse, tolerant, or even seeking -- also matters. Do we work to avoid the worse possible outcome, even if there is potential for enormous reward? Kris Willis is joined this week by Grant McAuley for episode 69 of the Podcast to be Named Later. The guys discuss the preseason PECOTA and FanGraphs projections that have the Atlanta Braves as overwhelming favorites to win the World Series. They wonder if the projections are sleeping on the Philadelphia Phillies and also take a look at the rest of the NL East. Pitchers and catchers will be reporting to North Port next week and Grant will be in Florida for all of the early action. The Braves don't have a lot of roster question marks, but we will be keeping an eye on the competition for the fifth starter spot and the final bench spots. Finally, Jesse Chavez has a new home after agreeing to a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox.
