Danielle is joined by New York baseball writer Bryan Hoch on his new book on Aaron Judge and being around the Yankees organization for years.
We Hit It Out Of The Park With New York Yankees MLB.com Beat Reporter, Bryan Hoch and Hoodoo Brown Barbeque's, Alan Stinson Bryan Hoch is the New York Yankees MLB.com beat reporter. Covering the team on a daily basis has provided Bryan a chance to witness many great moments and seasons. One of the greatest individual and season long accomplishments of recent memory was last year when New York Yankees slugger, Aaron Judge chased the American League's home run record which was held for 61 years by another Yankees great, Roger Maris who in 1961 had broken Babe Ruth's record of 60. On October 4, 2022 Judge entered the record books as he hit home run number 62. Hoch was there to witness this momentous moment and the other home runs leading up to it. He documents it all in his new book, 62: Aaron Judge, The New York Yankees, And The Pursuit Of Greatness. The book details all of the home runs, but offers a much deeper look at baseball's history and many other players who are a part of it. Bryan's impressions of the late New York Mets broadcaster, Bob Murphy and Back to the Future's, Doc Emmett Brown are a bonus not to be missed. Alan Stinson is learning what it takes to be a top-notch pitmaster. His training occurs at the extremely popular restaurant, Hoodoo Brown Barbeque where his brother, Tyler has earned the title of Sausage King. We met some of the people from Hoodoo Brown at the Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit at Pig Beach and were eager to have them on the show. Alan was presented as a perfect show guest since he played college baseball at Connecticut's, Albertus Magnus College. We talked with Alan about baseball and barbecue, but one interesting fact we covered was that Alan is a vegetarian and has never tried any of the meats he is learning to cook. Since taste is not a way he can tell if his barbecue is good, he must rely on other senses and Alan shares that. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. Steve interviews Bryan Hoch(00:12:00) from the YES Network. Bryan joins us to talk about his new book on Aaron Judge's home run chase called, 62. Bryan explains when he knew what he was witnessing every night last season could be a book and what Judge had to say when he told him about it. Bryan also helps put Judge's season into historical perspective, talks about legends like Ruth, Maris, and Gehrig and gives a prediction about the 2023 Yankees. Also, Tim Brown(00:49:40) the author of a new book called, The Tao of the Backup Catcher, debuts to promote the book. First, Tim talks about the decisions at the New York Times and the Los Angelas Times to close or at least cripple their sports coverage. Tim also talks about his time in Cincinnati and explains why he is excited about the Reds hot start. Finally, Tim and Steve talk about the book. Why backup catchers? Why Erik Kratz? Why are catchers managers? Tim breaks it all down in his impressive Sports-Casters debut. Steve starts the show explaining his recent absence, complaining about people complaining about booking their podcast, and first thing first on the 60-29 Atlanta Braves. The show ends with a passionate and memorable one last thing about how the 2020 Euros changed the course of Steve's life. Peter Schwartz is joined by Bryan Hoch to break down the latest with the Yankees and his new book, '62', about Aaron Judge's historic season in 2022.
62: Aaron Judge, the New York Yankees, and the Pursuit of Greatness by Bryan Hoch https://amzn.to/43mrT8Z “The definitive story” (Tyler Kepner, The New York Times baseball columnist) of Yankees slugger Aaron Judge's incredible, unparalleled run to break Roger Maris's home run record and the franchise both men called home. Aaron Judge, the hulking superman who carried an easy aw-shucks demeanor from small-town California to stardom in the Big Apple, had long established his place as one of baseball's most intimidating power hitters. Baseballs frequently rocketed off his bat like cannon fire, dispatching heat-seeking missiles toward the “Judge's Chambers” seating area in right field, sending delirious fans scattering for souvenirs. But even in a high-tech universe where computers measure each swing to the nth degree, Roger Maris's American League mark of sixty-one home runs seemed largely out of reach. It had been more than a decade since baseball wiped clean the stains of its performance-enhanced era, in which cartoonish sluggers Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds made a mockery of the record book. Given a more level playing field against pitchers sporting hellacious arsenals unlike anything Babe Ruth or Maris could have imagined, only an exceptional talent could even consider making a run at sixty-one homers. Judge, who placed the bet of his life by turning down a $213.5 million extension on the eve of the regular season, promised to rise to the challenge. “In the most thorough telling yet of an all-time-great Yankees performance” (Jeff Passan, New York Times bestselling author), veteran Yankees beat reporter Bryan Hoch unravels the remarkable journey of Judge's run to shatter Maris's beloved sixty-one-year-old record. In-depth, inspiring, and with an expert's insight, 62 also investigates the more significant questions raised in a season unlike any other, including how—and where—Judge will deliver his encore. About the Author Bryan Hoch has covered New York baseball for the past two decades, serving as MLB.com's Yankees beat reporter since 2007 while making regular appearances on MLB Network. A two-time New York City Marathon finisher, his wife Connie once danced on stage with Bruce Springsteen. They have two wonderful daughters, Penny and Maddie.
