The Cincinnati Reds and Nick Krall may have found another diamond in the rough, but this player will be here for awhile if he pans out. The early Spring Training performances show some good Reds things and one not-so good. Like who will be the Reds second left-handed relief pitcher in the bullpen? It has been encouraging to see guys like Matt McLain, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Noelvi Marte step up in the playing time they've been given. While the Reds may not add them to the Opening Day roster, their performances are still encouraging. The new rules implemented by MLB have the ability to grow the game, they just may take some getting used to. the Pitch Clock has significantly shortened the length of games, which is a good thing, but what are the pitfalls? Also, Joey Votto made one outlandish prediction. That didn't influence the projections on him from Zips, though, as it isn't too keen on Votto being a big power hitter in 2023. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Ironically, despite all the negativity surrounding the Giants this offseason, they come in with a rosy record projection, according to ZiPS. The popular projection system projects the SF Giants to win 88 games and make the postseason as the final team in the NL. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the Giants are projected to finish only a few wins beneath the Dodgers and the Padres, who each have 91-win projections. Those teams appear to have higher ceilings than the San Francisco Giants, but they also have far less depth to cover bad and unexpected scenarios. Logan Webb was a surprising omission from the Team USA World Baseball Classic roster, which was announced last evening. Webb had agreed to participate in the tournament earlier this offseason, so it was surprising to see his name left off of the official roster for Team USA. Webb is an extension candidate this offseason (even though he's under team control through 2025), so perhaps the Giants wanted him to put off him plans to play in the WBC while they're negotiating a long-term deal. Why didn't the SF Giants upgrade their infield defense this winter? The outfield was much more of a problem than the infield defensively in 2022. And even in the infield, where the Giants ranked 21st with -7 Outs Above Average, they got a combined -12 from Brandon Belt (-4), Tommy La Stella (-4), and Donovan Walton (-4). Their projected starters, Brandon Crawford (+7), Thairo Estrada (+3), LaMonte Wade Jr. (+2), and David Villar (-1) combined for +11 Outs Above Average in 2022. So the short answer is that their infield defense might not really be a huge problem and that's why they didn't make huge efforts to improve it. Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox
No wrong answers but one specific projection for the 2023 Chicago White Sox is unfortunate. The latest ZiPS projections through Fan Graphs has the White Sox finishing 3rd in the AL Central with a record of (74-88). All of the metrics, algorithms and player projections are explained on the Fan Graphs website but 74 wins? Really? This is the season of projections and there will continue to be an array of baseball prognosticators that offer their expert opinions while action in Arizona happens. The Sox have had a brutal off-season but are they really seven games worse than last year? The shift being banned should help Yoan Moncada, Gavin Sheets and Yasmani Grandal. The biggest off-season acquisition, Andrew Benintendi, could very well benefit the most from the new possibilities. Also, how close did Sox fans get from losing Jason Benetti? He went into detail regarding his recent contract negotiations with the White Sox. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
For the second straight offseason, the San Francisco Giants lost an ace-caliber pitcher in free agency. Despite losing Kevin Gausman after the 2021 campaign, the Giants' rotation was a strength again in 2022. And despite losing Carlos Rodón this year, the SF Giants' rotation once again looks like it's up to the task in 2023. This time, the Giants took a different approach. They stockpiled an extremely group of capable starters, and their upside play is waiting in the wings in Triple-A. The Giants' 2023 ZiPS projections for pitchers are explored. Logan Webb comes in with another excellent projection, followed by strong projections for their remaining deep group of starters. Alex Cobb looks like a legit No. 2 starter if his defense can do a better job behind him, and Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, Ross Stripling, and Sean Manaea all have relatively high floors and somewhat high ceilings. In the bullpen, Taylor Rogers has a strong projection, as do rookies such as R.J. Dabovich and Cole Waites. The real wild card is Kyle Harrison, who has been ranked as high as the 12th overall prospect on Top 100 lists that have come out in recent days and weeks. Harrison figures to start the season in Triple-A, and could be a major factor at the big league level in 2023. The Giants' staff looks deep enough to perhaps carry them to the postseason, and if they get there, it's hard not to dream on the potential of Webb and Harrison in a postseason series, along with Alex Cobb and any of the other intriguing starters the Giants have stockpiled for 2023. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
After a long wait, the San Francisco Giants' 2023 ZiPS projections are finally here! And the computer actually likes the Giants more than you'd probably expect. The SF Giants' position player projections are discussed today, and while it's clear that the Giants are missing star talent at the top (not for lack of trying), they feature an unusually high volume of solid players. That depth is not meaningless, particularly paired with the Giants' strong pitching staff, as ZiPS creator Dan Szymborski views the Giants as an 85-90-win team. Mike Yastrzemski is projected to be the Giants' best position player, which is ironic given the (surprisingly) negative reaction that erupted on Twitter when the Giants and Yaz agreed to a one-year deal for 2023 back in November. Again, Yaz is not at all projected to be a star, but he leads the large pack projected to produce between roughly 1.5 and 2.5 WAR. Batting averages are discussed in detail; specifically, how it's simply bad practice to act as though a .240 AVG is dreadful in the modern game. On the contrary, that is now roughly league average, and expectations need to be adjusted. The San Francisco Giants also have some very interesting prospect projections. Most of those appear on the pitching side, but on the position player side, Vaun Brown comes in with very interesting age-based comps. His top three comps are Starling Marte, Ken Griffey Sr., and Ramon Laureano. Brown had a monster season between Low-A and High-A, but he was old for those leagues. However, that doesn't stop ZiPS from projecting Brown as a league-average major league hitter already, which supports the notion that he's certainly someone to watch as he likely begins 2023 in Double-A. Penn State football had a major shakeup at receiver on Sunday night when the team parted ways with coach Taylor Stubblefield. Hours later, the team landed one of its top portal targets, Kent State wide receiver Dante Cephas. To make sense of all that information, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior Editor Nate Bauer discuss the events and how it affects the team. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you never miss any breaking news. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK First, they start with the news that Penn State landed Cephas. The team had been hotly after receivers in the transfer portal but had yet to find success despite those efforts. That changed on Sunday night when Cephas committed to the Nittany Lions despite some enrollment challenges that will cause him to enroll this spring. https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/penn-state-adds-top-transfer-portal-target-in-wr-dante-cephas/ Bauer and T-Frank discuss Cephas's impact on the roster and how important it was for Penn State to get on the board at that position. So is Cephas' commitment linked to Stubblefield's firing? Bauer and T-Frank discuss the larger picture at the receiver position and how the short-term situation has less to do with his departure than the problems on the roster and recruiting trail. Bauer and T-Frank discuss what those issues were. Finally, they round back to Cephas, and T-Frank gives some more observations on the former Zips final season in Akron to give fans an idea about what he brings to the roster. Remember, as Dan says, incorrect projections are either caused by flaws in the physical reality of the universe or by skillful sabotage. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Thirteen years is a long time. The San Francisco Giants locked up superstar Carlos Correa to a 13-year, $350 million deal late Tuesday--what should Giants fans expect throughout the course of the contract? For starters, Correa is just 28 years old. He should reasonably be expected to have 3-4 more prime years. According to the ZiPS projection system, Correa will produce 5+ WAR in each of the next three seasons; 4+ WAR in each of the next five seasons; and 3+ WAR in each of the next seven seasons. Thairo Estrada led all SF Giants position players with 2.7 fWAR in 2022, which is what Correa is projected to produce in year eight of this deal. Even in year 10, Correa is projected to produce like an average everyday player. What about Carlos Correa's platoon splits? What about his power translating to Oracle Park? While Correa is certainly better against lefties than he is against righties, he is absolutely not a platoon player (which should be obvious; you're not giving $350 million to a platoon player). He has a career 140 wRC+ vs. LHP and a 125 wRC+ vs. RHP. Both are excellent. Combine that with elite defense at a premium position, and it's what makes Correa the Giants' latest superstar. Correa hits the ball all over the field. He will certainly lose some home runs to right field at Oracle Park, but he should gain some to center field, where he hits the ball a lot. According to Statcast, Correa would've lost only four home runs over the last three seasons combined if all of his balls in play occurred at Oracle Park. Not a huge deal. "Mad Dog" Chris Russo of MLB Network, however, hates the signing. With all due respect, he has no idea what he's talking about. In one breath Russo praises Correa as a superstar. In the next, he says this will go down as the worst contract in Giants franchise history. How does that make any sense? Russo seems to be relying too much on old ways of evaluating offense: with batting average, home runs, and RBI. He's also seemingly unaware that the league average batting average has plummeted, and Correa's career AVG of .279 is way, way above the MLB average. Also, as teams certainly know by now, metrics like wRC+ and even OPS+ are better at evaluating hitters. Carlos Correa himself knows this and is fluent in the analytics of today's game. Just another reason he will be such a great resource for the San Francisco Giants for many, many years to come. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Despite the legitimate fan angst, there really is a lot to be grateful for as a fan of the San Francisco Giants. The 2022 season with a big letdown, but in a lot of ways the SF Giants' .500 record likely motivated them to have a big offseason this winter. The Giants are linked to all of the top free agents, including Aaron Judge, who is reportedly the Giants' top target. Reports indicate the San Francisco Giants are looking to add two outfielders, a middle infielder, and a starting pitcher this winter, and they're likely to add depth pieces as well, including addressing the bullpen. Not every team can claim to have such interest in adding talent, and it's very much something to be grateful for as a Giants fan. The Giants are also starting from a pretty good baseline win projection, according to the ZiPS projection system featured on FanGraphs. The projection system has the SF Giants at 83 wins—before accounting for any offseason additions. That projection doesn't include Carlos Rodón, since he is a free agent. It's a pretty good place to start considering the first item on the list, that the San Francisco Giants are likely to be very active this winter. Add, say, Aaron Judge, a center fielder, a shortstop, and an ace pitcher, and it's not hard to see the Giants with a projection of 90-95 wins. The state of the SF Giants' farm system is also something to be grateful for. While they've fallen or stalled out in a lot of subjective rankings in the last couple of years, there's something unique about this moment in time as a Giants fan regarding their farm system. Finally, after years of waiting, their top prospects are getting closer to the major leagues. Marco Luciano stalled out a bit in 2022, but Kyle Harrison dominated in Double-A and is a strong candidate to make a legitimate impact in 2023. Casey Schmitt has flown under the radar as perhaps the Giants' best position player prospect, and he ended the season with a handful of games in Triple-A, so he's also on the doorstep to the majors. All in all, it's a pretty good time to be a Giants fan. Now they just need to execute their offseason plans. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
