In advance of the Winter Meetings, starting pitcher signings are the big news but NCiB boyfriends are also on the move, including a full boyfriend trade between the Brewers and Mariners. Miguel Cabrera announces his upcoming retirement, reminding us that in addition to spectacular batting stats, he'll leave a legacy of giving back to his communities. The Winter Meetings bring us a new draft lottery, the Rule 5 Draft, and the Take the Field program focusing on women working in baseball. Ideally, they will also shake loose the Free Agent shortstop market and a home for Aaron Judge. The players' union, the MLBPA, renewed Tony Clark's contract through 2027 so that he will remain Executive Director through the next contract negotiations. Players voted in a new executive committee, heavy on the pitchers and Ian Happ. Ronald Acuña keeps the Hammers streak going by winning the LVPB home run derby and more familiar faces join the winter baseball scene in both Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. Baseball for All's Justine Seigal returns to Mexico to lead clinics for girls and coach some winter ball. Also in the DR, Nelson Cruz and friends lead the annual “Batting Clean Up” beach clean up event. Team USA finally announces the rest of their WBC pitching squad. The Astros defeated the Phillies to win the 2022 World Series. Al & Mark reconvene for the first time this off-season and a few weeks after the inaugural Nats Chat Podcast Party at Walter's. They begin with the new development in D.C. sports and that is the fact that the Nationals aren't the only team for sale in the DMV. Will the Commanders sale affect matters on South Capitol Street? (17:05) Washington made minor moves over the weekend as Sean Doolittle is coming back, but not Nelson Cruz. We look at what to maybe expect from the team this Winter amid the rebuild and ownership uncertainty. (28:20) Dusty Baker finally can call himself a World Series winning Manager at 73 years old as he received near universal praise from all corners of the sport. (32:45) Yes, Bryce Harper was dominant in October. Al & Mark though point out the difference in how Houston stocked their farm system after 2019 compared to the Nats situation. (44:05) The new Playoff format saw polar opposite results between the AL and NL. Houston and the Yankees made for a predictable ALCS, but the Phillies and Padres did just the opposite of that on their way to the NLCS. Were you a fan of this new extended version of the Postseason? It was a somber day when the Twins traded fan favorite Nelson Cruz to the Tampa Bay Rays just days before the 2021 deadline. Cruz was the catalyst for the most powerful lineup in baseball history. Thankfully, it looks like the Twins got plenty in return. Joe Ryan threw 147 innings in a very solid rookie season in 2022, establishing himself as a building block for the future. The Nats lost to Miami 3-1 as Sandy Alcantara bolstered his Cy Young case by throwing a 103 pitch Complete Game. Al & Mark tip their caps to the Marlins right hander, who is 3-0 this year vs. Washington in four starts. (03:30) Lane Thomas got the day off despite his surge as of late, because his career numbers against Alcantara have not been good (0 for 11 w/ 6 Ks). Do you agree with the manager filling out his lineup cards in this manner? His teammates had yet another game filled with base running gaffe in his absence. (09:20) CJ Abrams committed an error, but was the only National to double off of Alcantara on Sunday. Luke Voit meanwhile had three hits as he seemingly has settled in nicely into the DH role. By the way, what's the latest with Nelson Cruz's eye inflammation? (16:30) Anibal Sanchez pitched well, but was no match of course for Alcantara. Sanchez's ERA is at 4.40 and has five decent starts in last six outings. Al has some very interesting and unexpected words about Sanchez in mid September. (22:10) The Nats open a three game series on Monday night Atlanta and the Braves are just a game back of the Mets. The divisional race is of extra importance, because the winner will likely have a bye into the NLDS. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats bounced back to beat the Cardinals 11-6, giving them a series split. Mark (Live from St. Louis) and Al praise Alex Call who exploded with four hits while hitting ninth, one night after not being make to make a leaping grab to seal the victory. Call originally was not in the lineup, but Victor Robles was a late scratch due to a stiff neck. The offense totaled 18 hits overall on Thursday. (07:17) CJ Abrams had two hits and is hitting .360 so far in September. Nelson Cruz was moved down in the order to the sixth spot and responded with three hits of his own. Keibert Ruiz's day was not as fun as he had to head to the hospital due to swollen testicles. Feel better Keibert! (15:35) Josiah Gray did not have a good outing as he gave up two HRs to Yadier Molina. Gray has allowed a homer in 12 consecutive starts and is now leading the NL in walks issued too. Should they consider shutting him down for the season? (26:01) The bullpen had extended duty and mostly came through. Mason Thompson escaped a jam he inherited from Gray, Andres Machado threw two scoreless frames, and Kyle Finnegan shook of Wednesday's loss by throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 8th. What went into the decision to bring him back after throwing 30+ pitches the night before? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats lost 4-1 in St. Louis ending their bid for a 4th straight win. Mark (Live from Bush Stadium) & Al discuss the return of Nelson Cruz and the chain effect that it has on the lineup. Cruz being placed at DH means Luke Voit has to play the field and Joey Meneses has to move to the outfield. How should Cruz be handled the rest of the way? (16:10) Meneses knocked a pair of doubles on Tuesday night and joined a short list of MLB players in the process. He has 42 hits in 30 career games, and only twelve other hitters in history have as many hits in their first month. (23:05) MacKenzie Gore threw a simulated game with next up on the agenda being a bullpen session on Friday. The plan after that is for him to make a minor league rehab assignment. Could he take Paolo Espino's spot in the rotation? (28:30) Davey Martinez mentioned pregame that Mason Thompson could be used as an "Opener". The organization has barely utilized this method, but could this be changing? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
