In 2016, Brad Miller, CEO of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PTSA), had an idea. What if subsidized rides with Transportation Networking Companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft could help people in his community get where they needed to go. What if you could get a subsidized Uber ride at the end of your overnight shift when regular transit isn't running and be able to get home safely? This revolution in public transit and was seen as a model for transit innovation and quickly spread across the country. The next logical question was then: could we do the same for paratransit and offer better service to those riders and even at a lower cost? The answer was yes. And now across the U.S., paratransit riders can book a ride at the last minute—just like non-disabled people can—to get where they need to go. But all that could come crashing to a halt if proposed changes to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) rules about using TNCs in public transit come into effect. This episode features Brad and other experts talking about how TNCs have helped the disabled community and what the impact on people's lives will be if transit agencies have to stop using Uber and Lyft for paratransit and other on-demand rides.Featured Guests:• Brad Miller: CEO of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) in Florida. Brad shares his pioneering work in integrating TNCs into paratransit services, highlighting the significant benefits and cost savings achieved. He also discusses the looming threat posed by new Federal regulations that could disrupt these services.• Dr. Judy Shanley: National Director of Transportation, Mobility, and Youth at the National Office of Easterseals. Judy brings her extensive experience in advocating for individuals with disabilities and emphasizes the importance of innovative paratransit solutions. She voices concerns about how the proposed regulations could limit transportation options for people with disabilities.• Alex Elegudin: CEO of Wheeling Forward and former Accessibility Chief at the New York City MTA. Alex provides a legal and advocacy perspective, detailing his efforts to improve accessibility in transportation. He discusses his recent Newsweek article that highlights the challenges and potential setbacks of the proposed regulatory changes.• Jen Shepherd: Head of Uber's Global Transit Business. Jen explains Uber's role in supporting transit agencies and the potential consequences of the new regulations on Uber's ability to provide paratransit services. She underscores the safety measures Uber has in place and the broader implications for mobility if these services are curtailed.Link to the proposed rule changes on the U.S. Federal Register: https://www.regulations.gov/docket/FTA-2024-0020Coming up next week, we have the fourth of five episodes Paul recorded while visiting Australia. ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION: Brad Miller is a 2003 United States Military Academy graduate at West Point and a former lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. Brad served as a battalion commander within the 101st Airborne Division in the summer of 2021 when the U.S. Department of Defense implemented the COVID-19 injection mandate. He was relieved of command in late 2021 for his refusal to comply with that mandate. In my conversation with Brad Miller, we reflected on his 19 years of service in the U.S. Army and his courageous decision to resign over the COVID vaccine mandate. Brad shared how his moral obligation to uphold the Constitution drove this difficult choice, even as most of his peers complied. We delved into historical and current examples of governmental deception. Brad and I explored how societal manipulation, from propaganda to consent farming, undermines genuine choice and perpetuates control. We also discuss Trump's victory and what this means for us all. We start out our conversation hearing Brad's thoughts on Western NC in the aftermath of the hurricane. We talk about the confusion finding truth, and how that plays into narratives we are fed or psyops being conducted around us. We discuss J.M. Brad Miller graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2003 and then served 19 years on active duty in the United States Army. During his military career, he served throughout the U.S. as well as in diverse locations such as Afghanistan, Honduras, and South Korea. This means the renewed focus of the To Be Encouraged Podcast and will be on fulfilling his massive vision of encouraging two million people reach their highest potential. In our premiere episode of this new phase, Dr. Brad Miller hosts an enlightening conversation with Bishop Julius C. Trimble This episode delves deep into societal challenges while offering uplifting perspectives and actionable insights.Three Key Takeaways:1. Voting as an Exercise of Faith and Community Building Bishop Julius C. Trimble emphasizes the importance of voting not just as a civic duty but as an expression of faith. He passionately discusses how voting enables individuals to voice their opinions on societal directions and choose leaders who are champions for all people, uphold integrity, and reflect values like environmental stewardship. By participating in the political process, one can support policies that ensure justice and equality, ultimately leaving a better world for future generations. Bishop Trimble underscores that faith communities bear an ethical responsibility to influence state policies positively, advocating for justice and combating injustice.2. Combating Fear-Driven Narratives with Faith and Truth Throughout the episode, Bishop Trimble and David Livingston address the pervasive issue of fear-driven narratives in society, including those affecting immigrant communities and various minority groups. Bishop Trimble stresses that fear should not drive community engagement and highlights that diversity and differences are foundational to the US. Bart's Books, the world's largest outdoor bookstore, has been a beloved Ojai institution for decades. However, it wasn't until Emma Bailey, who started selling books there as a teenager, took the helm of their event programming that Bart's began hosting regular author conversations. Since launching the series in June 2022, Emma has organized over 30 live events, gathering writers and local experts for engaging discussions in Bart's cozy courtyard. Bailey's talent for connecting authors with the community has helped Bart's thrive as a cultural hub. Through her growing network of publishers and authors, Bailey continues to expand Bart's offerings. With her keen eye for new talent and her passion for fostering literary dialogue, she plans to bring a diverse array of voices to Ojai, including upcoming talks with acclaimed writers like Maisie Dobb's author Jacqueline Winspear. Here are three key takeaways from this impactful episode:### **1. The Power of Witness and Advocacy: The Life of Rev. James Lawson**Rev. James Lawson was a formidable figure in the civil rights and human rights movement. Though Bishop Trimble did not know him personally, Lawson's influence resonated deeply within his own ministry. A United Methodist pastor and a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Lawson was instrumental in teaching the principles of nonviolent resistance. His lifelong commitment to advocacy, social justice, and human rights serves as an inspiration for young pastors and anyone involved in social activism. Lawson demonstrated that the church's role extends beyond worship to radical prophetic witness and effective advocacy.### **2. Theological Foundations of Hope: The Impact of Jürgen Moltmann**Jürgen Moltmann's theological contributions, particularly his "Theology of Hope," have left an indelible mark on both academia and personal faith journeys. His writings remind us that what we believe about God should inform how we live, what we are willing to stand for, and even sacrifice for. Jürgen Moltmann emphasized the church's role as a beacon of hope in a world often filled with despair, a message that is critically relevant for young theologians and pastors today.### **3. Overcoming Adversity to Achieve Greatness: The Legacy of Willie Mays**Willie Mays, the legendary baseball player, symbolizes resilience and excellence in the face of adversity.
