Nnaka was unable to move and, when carried from the field to an ambulance, was unable even to give any kind of hand signal to others that he was OK. Nnaka  underwent a nine-hour neck surgery and spent 10 days in intensive care before returning to Tulsa. Partially paralyzed, he knew his life was forever changed. Your mind wants to label me as a person with the disability, but I'm a guy out here trying to change the world by changing one person at a time." - Emeka Nnaka *** On today’s episode, I’m joined by my co-host, Avarie Wilson. She serves as the Association’s Assistant Director of Development. Avarie and I are going to interview our guest and, actually, Avarie’s very good friend, Emeka Nnaka. As so many Oklahomans know, Emeka has been in a wheelchair since he was 21. He was playing for a semi-pro football team when he tackled an opponent during a game in Arkansas. The opponent got to his feet. Emeka, sadly, was unable to move. Partially paralyzed, his life has never been the same. Despite his challenges in life, Emeka has become an inspiration through his determination, grit, compassion and his exemplary volunteer work. Most notably, he’s been an amazing advocate and volunteer for Mental Health Association Oklahoma, the Tulsa Area United Way, the Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges, among others. In late 2018, Emeka was invited to be on Ellen DeGeneres’ show after 50 people wrote letters to let her know how “incredible” Emeka is. While on the show, Ellen read aloud a letter that described Emeka as a Tulsa treasure. Avarie and I could not agree more. And we’re so thrilled that Ellen and Cheerios gifted him with a check for $100,000 to celebrate his work in the community.

There is Purpose in your Pain feat Emeka Nnaka - Ep 33 - Feb 11, 2020 We have a super special guest for you this week! The Amazing Emeka Nnaka is on the show with us today.  If you don't know who Emeka is you have probably never seen The Ellen Show!  Emeka is a beloved Tulsan now, originally hailing from Georgia. He moved here to attend ORU. Not long after that, he had an opportunity to play semi-pro football and after a short 3 weeks into that opportunity, he tackled someone was his injury left him paralyzed in need of a wheelchair. His story doesn't end there. After a lot of soulsearching and hard work put in, he obtained his master's degree in counseling. One day he was asked to come help serve some teenagers in a local church's youth center. Kids being kids, asking anything, they asked him about his story. The more he shared his story the more he found there was purpose in his pain.  Now he uses his story, life experience, passion and the education he received to motivate, inspire and serve others!  After things were going okay for a while, he got into a wreck, lost his van, his place or residence was lost due to a fire, and his caregiver got injured all at once basically. But instead of that getting him down, he remembered the original injury didn't take him out so this couldn't either.  The nest thing he knew, he found himself on the Ellen show because over 50 people from the Tulsa community had written in. He shares soo much more of his story in this episode so we will leave it at that but it isn't just a story, it's real help.  This episode will serve you for the rest of your life. It's one of those things you listen too over and over no matter what season you're in because the value of the wisdom, the depth of his speech will resonate with you for sure.  There is a little sports talk at the beginning of the show but the rest of it is "The Juice" as he said.  Thank you for tuning into our show. He is a Christian and Motivational Speaker & has quite the story. Being originally from Georgia, with his parents from Nigeria, moved to Tulsa to attend ORU. Soon after he became a pro athlete playing football. Emeka Nnaka's life changed in an instant when making a tackle as a defensive end for the Oklahoma Thunder semi-professional football team. The 21-year-old Oral Roberts University student was playing for the team in a game at Fayetteville, Ark., when he sustained a spinal cord injury. “I just laid there, not able to move,” Emeka recalled. “I felt a tingling sensation throughout my body, kind of like when you hit your funny bone. I tried so hard to give the ‘thumbs up' sign on the way out of the stadium, but I just couldn't do it. When he woke up, he couldn't move anything from the chest down. But after several months of intensive physical therapy back in Tulsa, he slowly regained use of his arms, began to move his neck and learned to feed himself. We get into that story, how it happened, what life was like right after and life now. He drops some great encouragement along the way and we bump into others missions, evangelism, and organized religion, what do you do when you feel lost and don't know what to expect for your life going forward.
