The Mental Health Download podcast is a much-needed platform that sheds light on the broken and flawed mental health care system. This podcast fearlessly tackles important topics such as the inadequate state-funded care, negligence of counselors, overprescribing of medications by doctors, and high costs of alternative medicine that is not covered by insurance. It brings these issues to the forefront and highlights the struggles faced by individuals who cannot afford top-dollar mental health care. The host does an exceptional job in creating engaging content that not only educates but also sparks conversations about these critical issues.

One of the best aspects of The Mental Health Download podcast is its informative and interesting content. The variety of guests featured on the show ensures that different perspectives are shared, making it relatable to a wide audience. The discussions delve deep into social needs and address topics that are often overlooked or stigmatized in society. This podcast serves as an eye-opener for listeners, providing valuable insights into mental health challenges and offering potential solutions.

However, one potential drawback of this podcast may be its focus on a specific region, Oklahoma. While it is commendable that they aim to raise awareness about the services provided by Mental Health Association Oklahoma and highlight positive initiatives happening in that state, it may limit the reach and relevance for listeners outside of Oklahoma. Expanding their coverage to include a broader range of geographical locations could make the content more accessible to a wider audience.

In conclusion, The Mental Health Download podcast is a commendable platform tackling tough issues surrounding mental health with passion and dedication. By addressing stigma, advocating for change, and offering innovative strategies to improve the lives of individuals experiencing mental illness, homelessness, and addiction, it serves as an important resource in promoting positive mental health discussions. Despite its localized focus on Oklahoma at times, this podcast offers valuable insights that can benefit listeners from all walks of life who are interested in understanding and addressing mental health challenges more effectively.

Stephanie Roberts on the impact of her sexual trauma and addiction (re-release)

This is a re-release of a conversation I had with Stephanie Roberts back in 2023. Since that time, she's gained two more years of recovery and has been promoted to Program Manager of our Oklahoma City Street Outreach and Rapid Response team.  Stephanie is a native Oklahoman who, in childhood, experienced a sexual trauma that went unaddressed, resulting in a crescendo-like progression of events that ultimately culminated in the loss of her children, her home, her dignity.   Humanity stepped in, knowing that everyone has value and possibility, and took a chance on her. And now she is the one reminding others in the shoes she once wore, that they, too, have value and possibility.  This was such a good conversation, worthy of a re-release in our 2025 Season 1 batch of MHAOK staff success stories. It's important to note that this conversation touches on sexual trauma and loss. While it's critical dialogue to have, we understand that it could be difficult for some listeners. If you or someone you love is struggling with mental health concerns, please call one of our free mental health assistance center lines at 405.943.3700 or 918.585.1213 Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5pm, or contact us via www.mhaok.org. Today, we're talking with Jay Johnson, Tulsa Housing Case Manager for Mental Health Association Oklahoma.  Jay's relation with us began a couple of years ago when he, himself, was living on the streets and battling addiction. He is a shining example of why Housing First is so important and effective.   Since his time as a participant, Jay has been steadily working his way up in the agency. Once he stabilized, he was hired as part-time on-call staff, and since been promoted twice and earned three different certifications through Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Use Services, which he puts to great use serving Tulsans in need.  It was a treat to have this conversation with Jay, as he shared his experience with homelessness, what guided him through recovery and the goals he's set for himself. His drive is strong and his positivity is contagious.  After this recording, Jay emailed a follow-up thought: He wants anyone who may be struggling right now to know that if they connect with us and utilizes the services offered at MHAOK, they will be supported as they work to achieve their goals. He signed off with “you can achieve as much as you believe!” If you ARE needing assistance or if you see someone who does, please reach out to us at 405.943.3700 or 918.585.1213, or you can contact us through our website at www.mhaok.org.

Today, we're talking with Shay Seals, Service Coordinator for MHAOK's Long Term Supportive Housing program in Oklahoma City.  Shay recently celebrated her one-year anniversary with the Association after two bouts of homelessness and the realization that she wanted a more meaningful career.   She and her young daughter spent too many months living out of her car (before a willful surrender), shelters and motels when she had the money. Shay's story highlights the importance of financial management education and how so many people are only a paycheck or two away from homelessness  Her story also shows how honest self-reflection, hard work, and most importantly, a solid support system, is integral to rebuilding your life.  Her demeanor is grounding, her outlook inspiring. We really appreciate how Shay uses her experiences for the benefit of others – both in her openness here and in the work she does every day. "What we have, because brains wire in response to what happens between us - between me and another person, between me and my community, between me and my place of work - the locus of the dysfunction is not necessarily only in our brain. It may not even be mainly in our brain it's between us. And when we can heal what's sick between us, then the brain actually has a chance to use the biological things we're giving it. And the psychological tools that we're giving it to actually change. The implications of a bio-psycho-social disease is, if you are only treating the biological and psychological, then the unmet social, relational needs are like a weight or like an anchor and the boat can't move. We can't move to better waters because we're being weighed down. The system is constantly encountering more and more challenges to it." On today's episode, we interview Dr. Rachel Wurzman. "And I think - going back to the community and finding out what their needs are - you just mentioned cultural humility and I'd like to define cultural humility as the practice of not knowing because we're professionals and we know a lot of things and rarely do we focus on what we don't know. But we have to engage in this quest for learning more about the communities that we serve because we get caught up in our own biases." On today's episode, we're excited to be in conversation with Dr. Rosemarie Allen. Dr. Allen will be a keynote at this year's virtual Zarrow Mental Health Symposium. Dr. Rosemarie Allen has been a leader in early childhood education for nearly 40 years and her life's work has focused on ensuring children have access to high quality early childhood programs that are developmentally and culturally appropriate. As a national expert on implicit bias and culturally responsive practices, Rosemarie has been a respected voice on equitable youth and family-focused community support and response throughout the pandemic. The theme for this year's Symposium is Cultivating Community Connections and is coming up September 29 - October 1.
